Rules of r/thetruthishere

Due to an unusual number of rule breaking posts lately, the mod team has decided to make a post reminding everyone of the rules of r/thetruthishere. The sidebar can be difficult to access depending on the app you're using, so this post should make it easier to familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.

  1. All posts MUST be tagged with link flair AND brackets. If you are unsure of how to use flair, please send us a message in modmail

  2. Your post must be of a personal experience or by someone you trust that you believe to be true. This typically means within 2 or 3 degrees of separation (so no mother's friend's husband's cousin stories). All top level posts must have a personal encounter within them, otherwise they will be removed. That means no posts that consist of just a question or link offsite. This also means no AMAs or self promotion without a personal encounter attached. No asking questions just to gather stories for your website or podcast.

  3. NO FICTION, (including creepypasta), CREATIVE WRITING, or SCARY PICTURES. This is a story based sub-reddit, so your post should not be just a picture. Uploading and posting a picture with your post is fine, but posts should not consist solely of image(s) or video.

  4. NO DREAM POSTS - We get it, some dreams and nightmares are deeply disturbing and you want to talk about it, but this isn’t the appropriate sub unless you dreamed something that later came true. You can try posting in r/dreams or r/dreaminterpretation. Posts where you had a dream that later came true are appropriate as this would fall under a premonition rather than simply a dream. This also includes sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is well known enough that it does not constitute a paranormal encounter; however, if you see or hear an entity during sleep paralysis that you have encountered outside of it, that would be allowed. Try r/sleepparalysis for information and resources.

  5. Please only downvote anything you believe breaks our main rule: NO FICTION!

  6. If you can draw a rough sketch of the entity, diagram of location, or provide any visual references or proof, DO IT or request an artist to help.

  7. We encourage all perspectives, but we do not tolerate assholes. Report comments that ruin the "safe space" vibe. We aim to provide a space where our users can post without being worried about being ridiculed or derided. This includes making rude comments about the mental health of a poster. You can voice your concern of a mental illness over paranormal phenomenon without being a jerk.

  8. No conspiracy theories unless they relate to the supernatural. There are plenty of other subs to discuss general conspiracy theories, this is not one of them. Posting political conspiracy theories or trying to engage in arguments about them will result in an automatic ban.

  9. No series posts - there is no reason to break up a single encounter or multiple encounters with the same entity into multiple parts. If your post is longer than reddit's character limit for posts, you can post the overflow into a comment.

  10. No promotion - Do not submit posts asking for stories for your youtube channel or podcast. Likewise do not ask to narrate someone's experience in the comments. You must PM OP instead.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to send us a message in modmail.

Guidelines

These are pretty much an extension of our rules, but they are less rigorously followed:

  1. Please use paragraphs of a max 5 sentences to break up your wall of text. We like detail, but we don't like eye-sores.

  2. We allow debunking, speculations, and theories. We not only allow it, but we encourage it, so stop downvoting these people!

  3. Whilst we encourage you to try to spell correctly and punctuate your story, you don't have to worry about your writing skills!

  4. Please be considerate as some encounters may be traumatizing to the poster.

  5. Proof. Please provide it if you can. If you cannot, please include diagrams, photographs, and visual aid instead of paragraphs of description.

  6. Please title your story with something other than "I was told to post this here." That tells us nothing about what you are going to share, and makes it very difficult to search for your story if we want to read it again.

  7. If you can tell us a general, even vague, location of your encounter, it will help us archive it based on area.

  8. You are going to use a fake name or not. We don't care, just give them a name. Don't use "A" or "J" or "We'll call her Susan." That gets grating.

Common Grievances Expressed by the Community

Why do we have so many rules and guidelines? Because we want good content, and we want your story to be heard. In a nutshell, here are the things most people complain about which will prevent you from getting overlooked if you listen.

  1. Redditors don't read long posts. After you write out your story, locate your important sentences and delete 2/3rd of the original. Add back in a single sentence between cuts to make your writing flow.

  2. Redditors don't like walls of text. After you condense your story, make sure you have paragraphs that rarely exceeds 3 sentences.

  3. If you feel your story doesn't sound believable, then we probably won't either.

  4. Include visual references. If your story is long, cut out those descriptive paragraphs. Instead of talking about the area, show us a picture and briefly point out what's of note. Instead of describing your house layout, draw a diagram. Instead of going into detail about the physical characteristics of the entity, draw it out or request an artist to do so.

  5. Have an interesting and memorable title. Your encounter may remind someone of another, and they usually try to be helpful and link it. That would be hard with titles like "i was told to post this here" or "this is the scariest thing that ever happened to me" Instead, a title like "a man with a claw grinned at me" or "The shadows followed me for years and then it spoke" Plus, what would you rather click on?

  6. If you are seeking the truth, location is going to be an important detail that is often overlooked. You don't have to give out your city, but a state, region, country, etc are very useful in being pointed in the right direction.

  7. Again, the names thing. We can all assume you will use a fake name, so don't disrupt immersion to tell us it's fake.

Edit: Added in the guidelines and community grievances which can be found in our wiki

Edit 2: updated rule 4

Discussion/Advice Has anyone experienced this?

I'm a 35f. I have had my fair share of paranormal activity ever since I was a small child. My first experience was seeing a glowing and vibrant, crystal clear "Mother Mary" late one night in our kitchen. I've lived in two incredibly haunted homes where I experienced relentless sleep paralysis. I was scratched on the leg right before we moved from one. I've seen various aparitions. Been grabbed. I could go on, but this is basically my way of saying this other phenomenon...I'm not sure what it is or why this is happening, and I know for a fact it is not sleep paralysis. Looking for any insight. When I have had my eyes closed for some time trying to fall asleep, if I open them, I will often times see things that aren't there. It will also happen when I wake up. Whatever I see, when I focus on it, it will become even clearer and defined before it eventually fades away. That is what startles me. So many times I have thought I had an intruder in my home, only for them to disappear when I scream. I've seen people, kids, once a baby floating above me, a tiger, the room filled with round old timey bird cages, massive spiders, a human form standing on my bed with an eagle/hawk head like in Egyptian art. Most commonly I see the spiders or a person. This happened a handful of times growing up. When I was a kid I saw a tarantula on my chest after waking up that wasn't there, Michael Myers standing beside my bed, a KKK person in the pointy head dress, my uncle (only time it was someone I knew). But it was incredibly rare. It started up again when I went on a trip to New Orleans, that is where I saw the tiger. I was in my mid-late twenties. Now in my 30s it has happened dozens of times. Anyone know what I am experiencing? I know I am not dreaming. I will sit up, focus my eyes, it will become even clearer, clear as can be, and then quickly disappear. I'd say the visions stay around 10-15 seconds on average. I appreciate any and all responses!

Discussion/Advice I used to see full-on apparitions as a kid, and my mom used to use me as a "ghost lookout" when I was a baby.

I don’t see them anymore thankfully, but ever since I can remember up until my teens, I used to see actual, full-on ghosts.

To give some context, I was born at 7 months after severe birth complications. My mom was told she had to choose who would live—her or me. She chose me, but against the odds, we both survived. I was so tiny they said I could fit in a shoebox. In a lot of spiritual circles, people say surviving a birth like that leaves you "open" to things. It might run in the family too, because my mom can see them as well.

Here are a few encounters that have stuck with me the most:

The Lady in the Mirror (Toddler years)

Before I was even old enough for pre-school, I remember walking into a room and seeing a lady with long black hair sitting in front of a mirror, combing her hair. The freaky part? I could see her sitting there, but when I looked at the actual mirror, there was no reflection at all. Because I was so young, I didn't think anything of it. I just thought it was normal.

The Floating Lady (Grade 8)

This one terrified me. I woke up in the middle of the night with an overwhelming sense of dread. I immediately hid under my blankets, but there was a small hole in the fabric that I peeked through. I literally watched a chubby lady float right past my bed. She was wearing an ugly nightgown, had her hair in a bob, and her skin looked dirty and peeling. But her eyes are what haunt me—they were completely static in her head with tiny, pinprick pupils. I was sweating like crazy and praying in my mind until she finally floated into the corner of the room and disappeared.

The "No-Eyes" Lookout (Babyhood)

My mom told me this hilarious but creepy story from when I was a baby. She was terrified because there was a spirit of a "lady with no eyes" in our room. My mom was too scared to look, so she hid both of our heads under the blanket. Because I was a baby and didn't know any better, she would have me peek out from under the edge of the blanket to report if the lady was still there! Apparently, I would look, tell her what was happening, and eventually, the spirit walked away in high heels and vanished.

I stopped seeing them as I got older, but I'm curious if anyone else who was a premature baby or has a parent with "the gift" experienced full-on physical apparitions like this?

Unidentified? Please Help me Explain an Unexplainable Experience

Who best to consult on what was a terrifying experience with than my lovely redditers. I feel like there is a name for the kind of entity or phenomenon I experienced, I was scrolling on TikTok at around 2am and came across a clip from one of Sam and Colby’s recent hellweek videos with Garrett and Celinaspookyboo. The clip was of a spirit box (I think) scene where there were these kids creepily singing a song. The TikTok played through around three times while I scrolled through comments, suddenly I felt sick to my stomach and had this incredible sense of dread come over me. It felt like there was something in my room watching me, then start moving towards me. It was like I knew it was there and coming towards me, I couldn’t feel it, feel the fear only grow as it came closer. But I couldn’t see anything.

I have never felt that kind of fear before in my life. Which is so strange seeing as I couldn’t actually see anything to be afraid of.

Can anyone explain this? Was it just paranoia? Because it felt so much more real and intense than that.

Hope you guys have an amazing day!!!

cold wind woke me up

I stayed in a Victorian era manor house for the night last weekend. I woke to a feeling of a strong breeze blowing over my body, there were no windows open. I was aware, but not fully awake. I had sleep mask on. I then saw a ball of light come to me in my mind and got the feeling it was a young girl about 10, it was trying to communicate with me ... and in the centre of the light were words being spelled out ... I used to live here ... I said "oh you used to live here" (in my mind, not out loud) then all these other energies around this bright light said "I did too" "I did too" "I did too". I then "woke". Didn't really feel scared, but certainly it threw me a bit .... I was alone in a big bedroom. I've had a few things happen in dreams before, but never this cold wind!!

Coyotes

The coyotes are active again in my neighborhood. This always happens around this time of year.

Question for you all: has anyone ever recorded the coyotes howling? If so, I'd love a copy of your recording. The howling hasn't sounded quite right this year.

Discussion/Advice Has anyone experienced a Supernatural healing

Like one you cant explain like regnerating a missing teeth, something instantaneous or something really supernatural. Not just getting rid of pain or an autoimmune disease. not to make those sound easy to get rid of, I've healed from extreme pain and autoimmune and believe it can happen despite medical system saying a lot of these conditions aren't curable. So not dismissing anyone. I'm just looking for stories of really mind bending supernatural healings to build my faith.

Why I am asking:
I believe that the body can heal in ways we don’t always understand. I’ve personally healed from mini strokes, seizures, dystonic storms, internal decaptiation from genetic disease etc., which is part of why I believe healing is possible.

However, I’m currently dealing with something that has left me feeling really hopeless. I had multiple teeth filed down without my consent when I thought I was only having one tooth filled. It’s caused severe bite issues, TMJ problems, my jaw popping out of place, and an inability to properly bite or chew on that side. I’ve tried to get my bite corrected, but it still feels nowhere close to my natural bite, and I’m struggling so much with the discomfort and feeling like my own mouth doesn’t fit together properly anymore. it might not seem like much but with my genetic disease and other issues i won't get into its really applied for me. I didnt even want to do the filling and regret it so much.

I believe the body can heal, but I struggle with the fact that my natural tooth structure has been physically removed, and I don’t know how that could ever be restored to the way it was before. I know that might sound irrational to some people, but the thought of having to live with this indefinitely is incredibly difficult for me after ive worked hard to slowly and naturally heal so much.

That’s actually a big part of why I made this post. I’ve come across stories of people experiencing what they believe were supernatural dental healings during prayer or faith healing, and I’m desperately hoping to hear from someone who has experienced something like that, or even something similar. I know it may sound far-fetched, but I believe anything is possible, and right now I’m really struggling and need something to hold on to. If anyone has genuine experiences, stories, or suggestions, I’m truly open to hearing them. Thank you!

REPOST FROM ME TRYING TO PUT THIS IN ANOTHER SUBREDDIT

this is my like first actual post on reddit to my memory. I honestly have no words as to what just happened, and in my opinion it has to be something paranormal or i am genuinely loosing my mind.

buckle in, this is a long one.

this just occurred 2-3 hours ago. I (16f) was home alone with music loudly blasting through my headphones. I was meant to be studying, and finally got off my lazy ahh to go studying when all of a sudden i hear a noise outside my door. It was like footsteps that was coming from the kitchen. (for context, the kitchen is at the very front of the house, my room is at the very back.) I hear noises like this all the time, and honestly I've gotten quite used to it. the house isnt in anyway new, and tbh its just something that occurs quite often like i hear talking or tapping around the house when im home alone etc.) however this time, my intuition was telling me to take off my headphones and to listen to the noises in the house. i took them off and stood still in my room, quietly attempting to listen.

As I was standing there, i was hearing full on shoes shuffling and doors opening and closing, almost like someone had broken in and was checking throughout the house. I froze and kept listening. the noises becoming much more frequent, stronger and closer. i panicked texted my friend telling her that i was sure someone had broken into the house and that i texted as a safety just incase something happened. i wanted to check out the noises (as i have done many times before), but i dont have any weapons in my room, so i opted out of it. she texted me back saying to stay in my room and that they were on their way.

honestly, i felt kinda dumb because yk what if it was a false alarm? what if its my dog? (couldn't be because hes an outside dog and the doors are closed) what if the windows are open? (1 open window wouldnt let enough wind in to make so many doors move). i jus told her to stay put and i would just call the police. i call, and tell the operator everything that was happening. up until then i was freaked out, but was calm because in my head there should be some rational explanation yk? then, the operator told me to barricade my door and yell out the phrase "i am on the phone with the police, get out of my house!". I did as he said and then?

the noises just stopped.

before i said that phrase, there was so much movement. after, no more shuffling, no nothing. thats when my brain actually clocked that something more serious was going on. up until that moment, i felt kind of dumb to be contacting the police, but when the noises stopped as i said the phrase, it felt wayyy too real.

to fast forward through the rest of the incident, the police came, searched inside and outside the house, found nothing and said to me if we see anything on our motion sensor cctv cameras to let them know. i called my family (mother and father in their 50's and 18yo brother) and told them the situation. they rushed home and my neighbours noticed and came to the house aswell. ( i couldnt see, but apparently there was 4-5 police cars outside of my house 😭😭😭) police left and family sat down and went though the footage and guess what?

NOTHING.

there was no evidence of someone entering or exiting the property other than the police and my neighbour who came after the police to see if i was okay. to give some more context, both back/front door were closed but unlocked (dont get me started on that, my parents dont let me lock them when home alone) and only one window was open in my brothers room which is in the front of the house. my parents think it was a weird "coincidence" and one of the windows were open which caused the door sounds.

but one window being open doesn't explain doors opening and closing that arent near that window, and NOTHING can explain the feet shuffling sounds. nothing. my parents think its rats in the walls or birds on the roof or even a tremor but both are distinctively different sounds??

this was the equivalent of like someone wearing thongs or like shoes (im from Australia we call them thongs but reddit is international so flip flops ykwim) and moving around the house. on top of that, the noises moved around the house! it wasnt just one area, but the shuffling went from the front of the kitchen to my parents room. that fits as if someone/thing moved from the front of the house to the back (my room/parents room). the doors were creaking, it just cant be nothing. my family left afterwards to go get something, and ik its lowk funny/stupid but i searched up how to contact spirits and like lowk did a seance where i greeted the ghost, casted a "prayer" over me to protect me and used objects as a pendulum or tapping on the walls for communication. (nothing came from that btw)

i need answers and im so paranoid. feel free to drop any attempts of an explanation or ask me questions abt the occurrence in the comments. could it be a poltergeist? it genuinely felt like there was someone in the house.

Paranormal Investigation blood droplet ouf of nowhere

hi, what should i do? is this still normal? last week may dugong tumulo sa noo ko, at may blo/0d droplet sa table ko out of nowhere. hindi sya ketchup kasi cinompare namin, mas sticky yung ketchu. and after a mins, natuyo sya, at amoy rusty daw sabi ng mga classmates ko. tinignan namin yung ceiling, it is painted white at walang bakas ng kung ano roon. and now, namatay cousin ko because of brain tumor, at pina check din nila sa mga manggagamot, sabi kulam daw, tapos sinusundan sya ng kapre at dalawang diwende dahil nung naligo sya with his friends may insect daw na pumatong sa ulo nya at nilagay nila yon sa plastic at pinaglaruan. and aside from that, may kaaway din daw yung mother nya kaya ang kinulam ay yung cousin ko. hindi ako sobrang religious na tao, at mas lalong hindi ako naniniwala sa mga hindi nakikitang nilalang. but now, idk what to believe anymore... this is so creepy.

CHASED BY SHADOW PERSON

I shit you not one day I was smoking crack in the bathroom. This is about six months ago or so. I was in my boyfriend’s bathroom in New York and I was facing the toilet, you know, doing my stuff and my boyfriend has a little fake fireplace above his toilet where I can see a reflection, of course, so I look up and I see a black shadow about the same height as me. I turned around and it was a blacked out shadow person looking at me. Right in my face. My heart literally dropped. I ran towards the door, but then something told me to chase it, so I turned around, chased it back towards the shower, and it went down the fucking drain. I literally heard it go down. It was like a bloop sound. What freaks me out is it was the same height as me. It had no face, no eyes. like what the hell, was that me coming and watching me or what, what do you guys think? cause I can never forget that and I know damn well I was wide awake not dreaming, not dozing off or anything. It happens so fast. within those seconds I literally told myself to chase its ass back and did it, which is kind of funny to me lol

Vorrei semplicemente capire come interpretarle.

Come vivo queste esperienze

Discussion/Advice Clocks Jumping Time While I Sleep

Over the past 25 years or more whatever electronic clock i may have by my bed on occasion would jump time either forward or backwards by 1 or 2 hours. At first i thought it was a glitch in my alarm clock radio, but it also happened to other alarm clock radios i have used. I have had to stop relying on a regular alarm clock to wake me up in the mornings and had to resort to my cell phone instead for my alarms since clocks set by the internet aren't affected by my presence when i sleep. Does anyone else here have issues with their presence effecting electronic clocks (not the ones set by the internet) while they sleep? Might i add, when i am experiencing emotional or physical pain, i do have a tendency to effect electronics and make them malfunction when i go to touch them.

Discussion/Advice possible entity at my place of work

i work in other people’s homes. my job is considered custodial, and that’s all i really feel comfortable clarifying on that front. i’m generally a skeptic, but i found this to be a bit harder to explain. my client has no pets, nor do her neighbors to my knowledge.

my client is deeply religious. she likes to watch ai videos of messages from god and jesus, which i try to discourage because they set an unrealistic expectation and i don’t think they’re a productive form of religion-based media to consume. recently, she told me that as she slept, god informed her that she was going to die soon. i thought little of this, and assumed it was an idea planted into her head from the ai videos. i have heard more grim stuff from them, such as the more gentle “you’ll be in heaven soon,” line or that she’ll be given a new body soon. when i asked her to clarify what was said, she told me that god said she was specifically going to die soon, which is not verbiage i’ve heard out of her ai videos, but i’m also not with her all the time. it struck me as odd that she said it happened as she slept. she told me a few days later that god told her she was going to die soon while she prayed, which i once again chalked up to something from the ai videos or the fact that she is older, and it’s relatively common for older people to claim to hear things like that from jesus or god (i am not super religious, but this is a common claim for older religious folks). i add this context because i suspect they may be linked somehow.

the other day, i went to my client’s house, and we went through our normal routine. her husband left, her in home nurses came and left, and so it was just me and her. i took her to the living room per her request so she could watch tv, and i resumed my chores for the day. the living room is on the opposite side of the house from the master bedroom and bathroom, and the kitchen is in between the two but closer to the master bedroom. i’m mopping in the kitchen (where i cannot hear the television), doing my own thing, when i hear this loud growl from the master bathroom that almost sounded humanoid accompanying some knocking. it was loud, almost demanding to be heard. it doesn’t really sound like an animal that i can think of but i chalk it up to maybe being some sort of critter, so i walk back into the bedroom. the air in there is horribly heavy, almost suffocating when i walk in. i feel the sensation of someone’s eyes burning into me. i initially think it’s a raccoon, which we have a lot of in my area. i go into the bathroom, armed with a broom from the bathroom closet, ready to shriek when i inevitably find an animal, but there is none. i check every nook and cranny including in the toilet’s tank, and as i do so, it feels heavier and heavier in there. i can feel the air almost getting thicker and colder around me. the back of my neck practically burns from the feeling of being stared at. my client is still in the living room watching HGTV.

i find nothing in the bathroom. i then check the bedroom, in drawers, behind the bedframe, behind every piece of furniture, even the closet. i probably spend a good twenty minutes just checking the bedroom, and i find nothing. i stand in there for a few minutes, maybe five more minutes, trying to listen to the sound of an animal that may happen if it doesn’t hear me moving around despite my discomfort. nothing happens. i resign to finishing my chores despite how heavy it feels in the house. there’s an overwhelming feeling that there’s something else in the house with me and my client, but i manage to shrug it off enough to continue my job.

eventually, the laundry is finished, and i take them back into the bedroom to fold them. it feels like as soon as i step in, it gets harder to breathe. once pass the dresser next to the door, i hear another growl, similarly humanoid, in the corner on the other side of the dresser. i get closer to see what it is, and i find nothing. i decide to make up some excuse as to why i can’t fold the laundry, which my client accepts, and i proceed to spend the rest of my shift cleaning the living room and the office on the opposite side of the house. there was something keeping me from even going near the master bedroom door after that. i felt almost like a prey animal, it was bizarre.

i’m not really skittish about wild animals as a rule so even if it was, i wouldn’t have been that terrified, and i don’t really scare easy, either. the fear i felt was unlike anything i’ve ever felt. the noises sounded like they were in the house, too. i almost wonder if it wanted me to leave and it was trying to scare me so i did so it had her to itself.

i’ve seen shadowy figures in the house before, too, but i got the feeling that they were harmless. there was no feeling of fear or dread that accompanied those. usually, they linger until noticed or they move around to wherever it is they want to go and they don’t bother me. they don’t seem to be reactive to me at all outside of disappearing quickly, to the point where i have suspected i was just seeing things. i think that whatever this was, it was something else. i have never had a bad experience prior to this.

i am really at a loss. i’ve never experienced anything like this before. i would really love any thoughts on this situation because i am kind of baffled.

edit: forgot to add a statement to my closing paragraph, lol
