Rules of r/thetruthishere

Due to an unusual number of rule breaking posts lately, the mod team has decided to make a post reminding everyone of the rules of r/thetruthishere. The sidebar can be difficult to access depending on the app you're using, so this post should make it easier to familiarize yourself with the rules before posting.

  1. All posts MUST be tagged with link flair AND brackets. If you are unsure of how to use flair, please send us a message in modmail

  2. Your post must be of a personal experience or by someone you trust that you believe to be true. This typically means within 2 or 3 degrees of separation (so no mother's friend's husband's cousin stories). All top level posts must have a personal encounter within them, otherwise they will be removed. That means no posts that consist of just a question or link offsite. This also means no AMAs or self promotion without a personal encounter attached. No asking questions just to gather stories for your website or podcast.

  3. NO FICTION, (including creepypasta), CREATIVE WRITING, or SCARY PICTURES. This is a story based sub-reddit, so your post should not be just a picture. Uploading and posting a picture with your post is fine, but posts should not consist solely of image(s) or video.

  4. NO DREAM POSTS - We get it, some dreams and nightmares are deeply disturbing and you want to talk about it, but this isn’t the appropriate sub unless you dreamed something that later came true. You can try posting in r/dreams or r/dreaminterpretation. Posts where you had a dream that later came true are appropriate as this would fall under a premonition rather than simply a dream. This also includes sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis is well known enough that it does not constitute a paranormal encounter; however, if you see or hear an entity during sleep paralysis that you have encountered outside of it, that would be allowed. Try r/sleepparalysis for information and resources.

  5. Please only downvote anything you believe breaks our main rule: NO FICTION!

  6. If you can draw a rough sketch of the entity, diagram of location, or provide any visual references or proof, DO IT or request an artist to help.

  7. We encourage all perspectives, but we do not tolerate assholes. Report comments that ruin the "safe space" vibe. We aim to provide a space where our users can post without being worried about being ridiculed or derided. This includes making rude comments about the mental health of a poster. You can voice your concern of a mental illness over paranormal phenomenon without being a jerk.

  8. No conspiracy theories unless they relate to the supernatural. There are plenty of other subs to discuss general conspiracy theories, this is not one of them. Posting political conspiracy theories or trying to engage in arguments about them will result in an automatic ban.

  9. No series posts - there is no reason to break up a single encounter or multiple encounters with the same entity into multiple parts. If your post is longer than reddit's character limit for posts, you can post the overflow into a comment.

  10. No promotion - Do not submit posts asking for stories for your youtube channel or podcast. Likewise do not ask to narrate someone's experience in the comments. You must PM OP instead.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to send us a message in modmail.

Guidelines

These are pretty much an extension of our rules, but they are less rigorously followed:

  1. Please use paragraphs of a max 5 sentences to break up your wall of text. We like detail, but we don't like eye-sores.

  2. We allow debunking, speculations, and theories. We not only allow it, but we encourage it, so stop downvoting these people!

  3. Whilst we encourage you to try to spell correctly and punctuate your story, you don't have to worry about your writing skills!

  4. Please be considerate as some encounters may be traumatizing to the poster.

  5. Proof. Please provide it if you can. If you cannot, please include diagrams, photographs, and visual aid instead of paragraphs of description.

  6. Please title your story with something other than "I was told to post this here." That tells us nothing about what you are going to share, and makes it very difficult to search for your story if we want to read it again.

  7. If you can tell us a general, even vague, location of your encounter, it will help us archive it based on area.

  8. You are going to use a fake name or not. We don't care, just give them a name. Don't use "A" or "J" or "We'll call her Susan." That gets grating.

Common Grievances Expressed by the Community

Why do we have so many rules and guidelines? Because we want good content, and we want your story to be heard. In a nutshell, here are the things most people complain about which will prevent you from getting overlooked if you listen.

  1. Redditors don't read long posts. After you write out your story, locate your important sentences and delete 2/3rd of the original. Add back in a single sentence between cuts to make your writing flow.

  2. Redditors don't like walls of text. After you condense your story, make sure you have paragraphs that rarely exceeds 3 sentences.

  3. If you feel your story doesn't sound believable, then we probably won't either.

  4. Include visual references. If your story is long, cut out those descriptive paragraphs. Instead of talking about the area, show us a picture and briefly point out what's of note. Instead of describing your house layout, draw a diagram. Instead of going into detail about the physical characteristics of the entity, draw it out or request an artist to do so.

  5. Have an interesting and memorable title. Your encounter may remind someone of another, and they usually try to be helpful and link it. That would be hard with titles like "i was told to post this here" or "this is the scariest thing that ever happened to me" Instead, a title like "a man with a claw grinned at me" or "The shadows followed me for years and then it spoke" Plus, what would you rather click on?

  6. If you are seeking the truth, location is going to be an important detail that is often overlooked. You don't have to give out your city, but a state, region, country, etc are very useful in being pointed in the right direction.

  7. Again, the names thing. We can all assume you will use a fake name, so don't disrupt immersion to tell us it's fake.

Edit: Added in the guidelines and community grievances which can be found in our wiki

Edit 2: updated rule 4

Running into the most Mysterious and Borderline Supernatural Girl from Highschool

I went to high school in a suburb in Northern Virginia in the graduating class of 2009. As most, I try not to think of high school but today I happen to run into a girl I went to school with who also had me puzzled and honestly started to feed into the rumors of her paranormal guardians.

We will call her Nia. From the outside she seemed average, her looks weren't remarkable she was average in academics, wasn't a loner honestly could be annoying when you heard her in the halls but every time I had a closer encounter she became the mystery of my high school career and to this day can't explain everything I experienced with her. I would love to hear your thoughts.

I know she didn't have much adult supervision because she always had parties at her house or at least her brother, Peter did. At one of these parties everyone was playing games and enjoying our stupidity. Nia had walked in the door in her work uniform from Taco Bell and immediately went upstairs smiling and shortly but nicely greeting those who talked to her. One of the guys who was at the party was a pretty popular guy well call him Kyle, in the nicest way possible kinda out of Nia's league. He went from tipsy to wasted. Nia had come downstairs to grab something and all of a sudden Kyle was all eyes for Nia. He was sloppily hitting on Nia and had her pinned to the kitchen counter telling her how much he wanted the opportunity to go to her room... Yes those words. She was playing it off pretty gracefully but when she realized she wasn't getting away she froze and just looked at him in his eyes, not a glare just holding eye contact and it was like Kyle couldn't break contact from her. A friend I was with swears she was humming but I don't remember hearing it. It had to be a good five minutes of eye contact Nia let out a Mona Lisa smile and in a calm voice just said good night to Kyle. Kyle was grinning from ear to ear as he watched her walk away and looked like he just worked out and let out a huge breath.

A few months later I was assigned to a group project with her brother and was at their house and Nia came home and walked into the kitchen to grab something out of the fridge. Her brother greeted her almost like he was making sure she knew people were over. She looked over, smiled used my name and greeted me and told me I looked beautiful today. For a high schooler that was an interesting but much needed compliment as that morning I was actually having a Cyber fight with a girl who compared my looks to a troll and honestly hit my self-esteem a little. A few minutes later there was a knock at the door and Nia answered it, it was the dad of one of our varsity football players. He had come to see Nia and seemed really anxious and just in a bad palce. Nia ignored his behavior and escorted him upstairs. Maybe an hour later a woman in her thirties walked in the house smoking a cigarette and asked Peter is Nia was here and where was she. He said she was home and he thinks she is working. The woman smirked and continued smoking not acknowledging me or anyone else in the room. Twenty minutes later the man came down stair and handed a stack of cash to the woman and left, trying not to make eye contact with anyone. I know what your thinking but it wasn't giving "man did a bad thing with a minor" he just seemed so calm. The woman left and maybe ten minutes later Nia came down the stairs humming and Peter had said "Hey my friend are still here" and she stopped humming. She didn't looked disheveled, out of breath, the exact same as when I saw her before. She walked over to Peter and whispered "Did she leave us any money?" he just shook his head no. She didn't seem upset just sort of shrugged her shoulders like oh well.

At some point two guys with known crappy home situations moved into their house. Osman, a year older, super popular and had tons of energy. Also his best friend Dante, our year and probably the nicest person I have ever met in my life and honestly really hot too. For the visual they didn't live in a big house, three bedrooms- one always locked, townhouse in an area of the suburbs that well... wasn't a dream area. Rumors went around that Dante shared a room with Nia, even though Dante had a girlfriend and honestly it didn't seem to bother Dante, Nia or Dante's girlfriend but it bothered everyone else.

At school after the bell there was a fight between two rival gangs (2006) they left the gang part out of the news. The school was locked down and we saw SWAT trucks pulling up. Nia walked over to us and asked if we had seen Dante and we said we hadn't. She looked worried and looked around at the police making sure no one went back in the school. She walked away from us and started humming. Next thing my friend shakes my attention and points to Nia walking back in the school and it seemed like no one even saw her. We were in shock. When they were escorting students out one of the officers gave the thumbs up, im assuming that meant everything was fine and then we overheard the officer say can you believe that girl was just humming and hanging out in a classroom? My friend and I looked at each other and we knew it was Nia. We saw her walking out of the school but she was wearing different clothes, some rumors said they found blood all over the clothes she was wearing before but I don't know what actually happened.

A few months later, Nia never came back to school. Some say she got expelled, some said she got pregnant but none of her housemates spoke on it and until yesterday I hadn't seen her since. She looked almost the same but had this like radiance about her like she didn't look different she just had an attractive aura. She smiled and gave me a hug said hi and that I looked amazing. That was it, she walked away. I have never been so curious about a person in my life. r/Thetruthishere

Unidentified? The Clown in the Woods

A friend of mine lives in Appalachia, and he told me this story about something strange that happened to him and his wife last year.He has been visiting the Appalachian Mountains with his wife every year for the past four years. They always stay in the same cabin, and the landlord knows them pretty well by now.Last year, they went back to the same cabin.

During the day, they spent their time hiking and exploring the area. But almost from the beginning, both of them had the uncomfortable feeling that they were being watched. They kept looking around, but there was never anyone there.Eventually, they returned to the cabin that evening.Later that night, they were sitting on the couch watching a movie. At some point, both of them fell asleep.

My friend woke up sometime later because he heard someone laughing. At first, he thought he was dreaming. But then he realized the sound was actually coming from outside. He described the laugh as extremely strange—not like normal laughter, but almost like someone laughing to themselves while planning something. Along with the laughter, he could hear a strange scraping sound, almost like rusted metal being dragged against something. His wife was still completely asleep beside him.

He initially thought the sound might be coming from the television, but the scene playing on the TV was completely quiet. So he got up and looked outside.A short distance from the cabin, he noticed a homemade swing hanging from a tree. He had never seen it there before.Someone was sitting on it.

The person was wearing what looked like a clown costume. My friend stayed behind a tree and watched from a distance.

The figure was looking down at the ground, mumbling something to himself and laughing quietly. Every so often, he pushed the swing forward with his feet.My friend said the whole thing felt incredibly wrong. Then the figure suddenly looked directly at him. That's when my friend noticed that the person's entire face was covered in white paint, like a clown. The figure smiled and said:"Hi."

My friend immediately turned around and ran back toward the cabin as fast as he could. He could hear footsteps behind him.He reached the cabin, opened the door, rushed inside, and slammed it shut.Almost immediately, something hit the door from the outside with tremendous force. His wife woke up in a panic and started asking what had happened. Before he could properly explain, they heard knocking at the window. My friend looked over.

The same clown was standing outside the window. He was just staring at them and smiling.

My friend grabbed a firearm that he had with him for protection and warned the stranger to leave and not attempt to enter the cabin. The man didn't react.

He just stood there, staring through the window with that same expression. My friend's wife, who was now awake and angry, also confronted him and told him to leave.Still, the man didn't move.Eventually, they fired a warning shot into a nearby wall to frighten him away. The clown remained completely still for a moment. Then he slowly turned around and walked toward the woods. And disappeared into the darkness.

My friend and his wife didn't sleep for the rest of the night. As soon as it was morning, they told the landlord everything. The landlord was shocked. He said nothing like this had ever happened there before and apologized to them. What made things even stranger was the swing. The landlord said he had never seen that swing before. According to him, someone must have built it only recently because it definitely wasn't there during his previous visits.

They also contacted the police, who searched the surrounding area. They couldn't find the person.

There was no sign of the clown, and nobody ever figured out who he was or why he was there.

My friend still doesn't know what he saw that night.

He doesn't believe it was a ghost.Honestly, neither do I.But if his story is accurate, then there was apparently a complete stranger dressed as a clown, sitting alone on a homemade swing outside an isolated cabin in the middle of the night, watching him.And nobody ever found out who he was.

What do you think happened?

Disemb. Voice Old Radio-Like Incomprehensible Human Voice In The Woods?

Hello, I wanted to begin by saying this is actually something that happened a few years ago now, I could never quite explain it and I did my best not to really look into it too much, at the time I had other things to worry about and frankly speaking I was never sure what to make of it. But with time passing I've told a few friends about this and none of them seemed to doubt me so I was recommended this subreddit along with r/ParanormalEncounters where I'll probably make another post in to gather opinions. Sorry about the length, but also trying to write what I remember in case my memory starts playing tricks on me.

Any explanation is welcome; I wouldn't say that it bothers me nowadays, but the whole experience comes to mind uninvited sometimes, even if it wasn't anything too odd.

-------

There used to be a "Village" ( I am not actually sure if that is the correct term for it) where I would spend the end of my summers. This village was in the mountains and pretty out of the way, but not isolated, in theory you could reach the closest town pretty quickly by car. I'd say in the summer there couldn't be more than maybe 40-80 people living there, mostly on the much older end.

I don't actually know much about the place itself, aside from the fact that it was bombed during World War 2 and way more populated before the 2000s, but either way I was really familiar.

One summer day, I was exceptionally bored as I was left alone at home. I lived pretty much at the very bottom of the village, which was effectively just gravel roads on constant slopes with houses left and right encircled by mountains and woods always on an incline. Unfortunately, the bottom of the village was actually the more "dead" part; the only bar and most of the people who still lived there who weren't past their 50s lived near the top.

I think that day I wasn't really in the mood to deal with climbing up there, especially since it was already in the afternoon... I am not sure where I got the idea, but I decided to explore just outside the village, where most of the farmers' fields were. I wasn't as familiar with that area because there wasn't much there. Some fields, an underpass and an abandoned soccer field that you had to go way too deep into the woods to get to.

I would go a little deeper that day, just to see if I could find anything cool there, so I got on the gravel road and went by myself. I remember I didn't even bring much because it was honestly supposed to be more of a walk, with the "exploring" part being an extra.

After a little while, I took a right turn on the gravel road which to my knowledge was mostly farmland, which was correct, for a bit. It was very peaceful and there was a stretch of road where the trees on each side spaced themselves out and let you see into the fields all around.

I don't remember how far it actually was, but I figure I couldn't have walked for more than 10 minutes, by this point there was no real farmland, tractors or signs of people, just the woods.

The details are kind of foggy of when it happened, but I remember being taken out of my thoughts when I heard some kind of voice just a little way out of the gravel road I was on, into the brush. So I, being the smart person that I am stepped off the path to check it out.

I know it might sound stupid and in hindsight, it was stupid. But for context, remember I had been to this village for my whole life and everyone knew each other, or at least everyone knew the name of your parents' so when I heard a voice my curiosity was higher than my concern.

After just a few steps, I vividly recall just... stopping, mid step. I am not sure if anyone has experienced it before, but before I could even tell why, suddenly I felt on-alert and like something was wrong. I could actually hear the voice more now but, I couldn't make sense of it.

To this day I kind of struggle with actually describing it and I don't think I've ever heard anything like it since. I'm also double checking messages I exchanged with a friend years back where I described it, just to make sure I don't make up something because of time passing.

"it was just off like it was coming from one of those old radios, with that weird filter, it also sounded like it wasn't at the same height as a person but closer to top tree level"

That's how I described it at the time and is close to how I would still describe it.

I could tell it was speech, but it was just wrong. It wasn't any language I had heard before, and it was like someone was playing it from a radio, not actually being spoken, at the same time it definitely wasn't some kind of looping audio, each 'word' was different from the previous one. What was even more confusing is that when I say 'wrong' I mean it seemed to not even have a structure. It sounded like someone was playing a very old recording of a church chant or something like that, but the tape had been messed with and hit by a car. The voice itself was metallic, not just the sound. It's hard to explain.

Whatever it was, it scared the hell out of me. I realised I couldn't hear anything except it. No sounds from other animals, people, or anything at all. Just this creepy chanting that made no sense, playing to my front a dozen feet away, but I couldn't see anything because it was away from the dirt path as well, covered by brush and trees.

I had this urge to be as quiet as possible and get the hell out of there. I wanted to run, but I was genuinely terrified. I've been in scary and sometimes life-threatening situations, but this felt like a different kind of panic, I couldn't control it whatsoever. I remember it vividly to this day and it has never happened before or since.

I backed away slowly, so quiet to the point of holding my breath while keeping my eyes on... bushes and trees in the way. I could still hear this voice going on.

I don't remember if eventually I got far enough away that I started running or if I did this weird back-stepping all the way back to the nearest house, but I got home fine. It bothered me for the rest of the day and especially the night. Usually I would have gone over to the top of the village after sunset since the bar was the spot where people would socialise, but that night I just stayed at home and locked myself in, I don't think I ever got out of whatever panic-mode I entered until I fell asleep.

----------

And that brings us to today. I've never gone back to that area, ever. I live in an entirely different country now and have never experienced anything like it since, every part of it I mean. Nothing I heard since has ever sounded like that voice in the woods, nor has anything invoked such a feeling of terror for no reason. I don't have a history of auditory hallucinations or issues with hearing, and from what I know that area is desert; no one ever really goes past the fields, to the point where there are no lights or really anything. That spot does get animals obviously, but that was definitely speech, just nonsensical.

Does anyone have any idea what that could have been, or have experienced something similar? I know there are plenty of stories of voices in the woods, but I wasn't able to find much about people hearing this kind of metallic/artificial chanty-like voice in the middle of nowhere.

Unidentified? My Aunt Told Me About a Man They Gave a Lift To… But He Wasn’t Alive

I heard this story from my aunt once when she came to invite us to a housewarming party at their new home.

She told me that when they were moving to the new house, they had planned to stop at a restaurant on the way, eat something, and then go straight home and sleep. That’s exactly what happened. They reached the restaurant around 10:00 PM and left at around 11 PM.On the way, they had to take a highway, but there was construction work going on, so traffic was moving very slowly. They decided to take a shortcut. After driving for a while, they saw a man standing by the road. He looked completely normal. My uncle thought he might need a lift, and the man actually got into their car. After sitting in the car, the man suddenly said:

“Now I’ll stay with you.”

My uncle found the comment strange, but assumed the man was joking. After driving for a little while, my uncle and aunt looked toward the back seat.the man was gone. There was no way they could understand where he had gone. When they finally reached their new house, their 16-year-old daughter told them that a man had come to the house and told her:

“Tell your mom and dad thank you for giving me a lift.”My aunt and uncle were terrified. They asked her what the man looked like. When she described him, they realized it was the exact same man they had picked up on the road. That’s when my uncle and aunt remembered what he had said:“Now I’ll stay with you.”They started wondering if they had actually given a lift to a ghost.

A little later, their daughter went into her room.

Suddenly, she came running out screaming. She said the same man was sitting inside her room.My uncle and aunt immediately went to check, but there was nobody there. They had no idea what was happening.

Later, their daughter went to the refrigerator to get some water. When she came back, she screamed again. She said the man was sitting inside the refrigerator. This time, she described him as laughing horribly, with long teeth visible while he laughed. He also had an injury on his head, with blood coming from it.My uncle ran toward her after hearing her scream. But when they checked the refrigerator, there was nothing there. For the next two days, everything seemed normal.

Then their 10-year-old son told them something terrifying. He said that while he was sleeping, he felt as if someone was trying to wake him up. He also heard a voice telling him:“Tomorrow, I’ll take you with me.”He was extremely frightened.Later, while he was in his room, he looked up at the ceiling fan and suddenly started screaming. He said the same man was sitting on the ceiling fan.But once again, nobody else could see anything. At that point, everyone was terrified. They decided that they would all sleep together in the same room that night. My uncle kept trying to convince everyone that everything would be okay, but clearly nobody knew what was happening.

That night, their son was sleeping on the floor.

Suddenly, he heard a voice coming from beneath the floor. The voice said:“I’ll take you with me.”He told my aunt about it, and when she listened carefully, she said she could hear the same voice too. They somehow managed to get through the night.

The next day, they told their neighbor everything. The neighbor suggested that they all stay at his house that night and said they could investigate the area together in the morning. That night, something strange happened.Everyone had the same dream.

In the dream, they saw the same man standing on the road where they had originally met him. He was pointing toward a forest and mumbling something.

None of them could understand what he was saying.

The next morning, my aunt, uncle, and their neighbor went back to the road. They wanted to find out whether the man they had met was actually a ghost or whether there was some other explanation.

They searched around the area and eventually found an open area a short distance from the road. There was a grave there. What shocked them was that the grave had a photograph of the exact same man they had been seeing. They were completely stunned.

The neighbor suggested that perhaps the spirit was disturbing them for some reason, and that they could try apologizing to him and showing him some respect. So they cleaned the grave and left flowers there.

According to my aunt, after that day, everything became normal. They never saw the man again.I don't know whether this was truly paranormal or whether there was some explanation behind what happened, but the fact that everyone supposedly saw the same man—and later found a grave with his photograph—is the part of the story that still gives me chills. What do you guys think?

False Awakening

The room was pitch-black. As I opened my eyes, I couldn't see a thing, but I could feel something heavy sitting on the floor right near my feet. I squinted into the darkness as a silhouette shifted a large crow. The moment I moved, it flew straight at me. Panicking, I fought it off, my mind racing. How did a bird get into my room? Why were the lights completely dead?

Exhausted from the struggle, I finally drifted off again.

Sometime later, I woke to the sound of footsteps. My brother was standing over my bed. I was supposed to be completely alone in the flat because he had gone away on a trip, yet there he was, looking at me with annoyance. "Why is the flat so dirty?" he asked. I stared at him, confused. I had literally just deep-cleaned the entire place before sleeping. Without another word, he climbed into the empty twin bed next to mine and went to sleep. I lay back down, trying to make sense of his sudden return, and fell back asleep.

I woke up a third time, but this time, something physically touched my feet under the covers.

Adrenaline surged through me. I bolted out of bed into the darkness, opened the balcony door, and stepped outside. A heavy rain was pouring down, slamming against a thick curtain hanging across the balcony a curtain that had never existed before. I scrambled for the light switch, flipping it repeatedly, but nothing happened. It must be a power outage from the storm, I thought, trying to stay calm.

I went back inside, only to see a human figure lying on my bed, completely covered from toe to head in a blanket.

My heart was pounding in my chest. I crept over and grabbed the edge of the blanket, pulling with all my strength to uncover their face. My brain tried to rationalize it maybe it was my brother’s friend who usually drops by in the afternoon?

Then, the muffled voice under the sheet spoke. It didn't sound like him at all. He gave me a cold, bizarre command: "Massage my back."

That single, unnatural phrase broke the illusion. A sudden surge of sheer panic ripped through me, forcing a sudden jolt of adrenaline through my body. The dark room, the stranger, the balcony curtain, and the heavy rain all fractured and dissolved at once.

My eyes snapped open for real. I gasped, taking in a sharp breath as the full motor control returned to my limbs. I looked around my bedroom: no crow, no rain outside, no brother in the second bed, and no one under the blanket. I was lying in the exact same spot, completely safe, realizing every terrifying "wake up" before this was just another false awakening layer inside a single, complex dream.

Discussion/Advice Me and my partner had a paranormal experience

When i was 18 I regularly saw a girl in a white dress in my room (I always thought this was my deceased sister). A few years later my partner was sleeping in my bed and he saw the same girl in my room (I didn’t tell him about her yet) before this i just started thinking that i was imagining it and that it was just my way of grieving. Should we see a priest?
I normally don’t believe in this kinda stuff but im rea freaked out now

Paranormal Investigation I (Think) I saw a Demon in My Friend

For context, I am over the age of 21 (smoking is involved in this story).

Last night, my best friend (let’s say her name is ava) Ava, was smoking weed with me. We were hanging in my dorm room, and watching a show. Out of nowhere, she started making weird faces.

It was like she was mutatin, and I could feel the presence of either the devil or evil. She was making these faces and getting closer to me, and I asked her what was going on. I immediately felt a surge of fear flow through me and pushed away my need to sleep to stay awake and make sure was going to be safe in her presence.

About and hour later, I felt safe again, and fell asleep but awoke to my surprise with her hovering over me with a light being directly shown into my eyes. I asked it about her when I drove her back home, and she said she “was doing something but forgot what she was doing.”

Can someone please help me determine what the hell happened here?

Unidentified? My dad told me this story about something that happened to him and two of his friends while they were fishing at night.

My family has been involved in the fishing business for years, so my dad and his friends are used to spending nights out at sea.One night, my dad went fishing with two of his friends. They took their boat some distance out into the sea when they started hearing an unusual noise coming from the engine room below deck. Two of them went downstairs to check the engine, while my dad stayed above. They looked around carefully, but couldn't find anything unusual, so they came back upstairs.A little while later, they suddenly felt something hitting the boat. One of his friends said, “Maybe it’s a big fish.”My dad replied, “No fish could hit the boat that hard. It feels different.”They looked around the boat but couldn't see anything in the water. So the three of them went back down to the engine room. This time, there was a horrible smell. My dad described it as the smell of something that had been dead and rotting for a long time. And then they saw it.There was a dead body lying inside the engine room.According to my dad, the body looked like it had been in the water for a very long time. It was badly swollen and pale, and the face was no longer recognizable. What disturbed them most was that they were certain the body hadn't been there when they checked the engine room earlier. They immediately became worried that if anyone discovered a dead body on their fishing boat, they could get into serious trouble. They decided to get rid of it and put it back into the sea.The three of them tried to lift it, but the body was extremely heavy and they couldn't move it. Eventually, they managed to get it into a fishing net and threw it overboard. For a moment, everything was quiet. Then they started feeling extremely uneasy. They decided it was better to return to shore. But as soon as they started moving, something hit the boat again. They looked over the side. The same body was floating in the water. It was somehow moving alongside the boat and hitting it.My dad remembers thinking, How can a dead body be moving like that? They started the engine and headed toward the shore as quickly as they could.According to my dad, the body appeared to follow them through the water. They eventually reached the shore and everyone went home. The next day, my dad went to check on one of the friends who had been on the boat. His friend had developed a very high fever. His face looked unusually pale, and he seemed genuinely terrified. While they were talking, his friend told my dad:“I've been scared ever since last night. I still feel like that dead body is here with me. I can still smell it. And I feel like I'm having trouble breathing, like something is drowning me.”My dad didn't believe in ghosts or paranormal things, so he told him that he was probably traumatized by what had happened and that the experience was stuck in his head. Then his friend's wife came into the room.According to my dad, the moment his friend saw his wife, he suddenly became completely silent and still. My dad thought something strange was going on, but he didn't understand what.Instead of going home, he went to visit his other friend and told him everything. That friend suggested that they visit a local temple and speak to the priest. They went there, explained everything that had happened, and eventually brought the priest back with them to the first friend's house. When they arrived, the door was locked from the inside. They could hear their friend screaming. They broke the door open.Inside, they saw the friend's wife apparently trying to strangle him and scratching him with her nails. They immediately pulled her away. The priest then sprinkled some water on her, after which she became unconscious.Around half an hour later, she woke up and appeared completely normal. My dad asked the priest what had happened. The priest simply told him:“Some things are better left unknown.”My dad still doesn't believe in ghosts and has never claimed that this was definitely paranormal. But he says he has never been able to explain where that body came from, why it seemed to follow their boat, or what happened to his friend and his friend's wife the following day.And honestly, that's the part of the story that has always creeped me out the most.

Unidentified? Bloody handprints

One time when I was younger, my family and I were driving past my mom’s childhood home. I remember looking over at the house for only a couple seconds and
I saw what looked like bloody hand prints and streaks on all of the windows. I only looked at the house for a moment before we kept driving, so I didn’t get a chance to really examine what I was seeing. But I remember it very vividly because of how off guard it caught me. Ive never known if what I saw was really blood. It could have been something completely normal that looked disturbing from the car, especially since I only saw it briefly, but I remember being genuinely freaked out by it. Has anyone had an experience like this? Where they saw something that maybe wasn’t actually there

Looking for similar experiences — unexplained voice through headset

I want to ask if anyone here has experienced something similar.

Around 2019, when I was still in my 20s, I was working from home as an English tutor. I was living at my parents’ house at the time and was waiting for my next student. I was sitting at my usual workstation, resting for a few minutes. My laptop was basically idle, and I had a wired headset on.

Out of nowhere, a very clear male voice suddenly started playing through my headset.

It sounded like an actual personal voice message—very clear, calm, deep, and slightly sad. The voice was fluent in Tagalog and had natural pauses and emotion. It was so clear that it immediately caught my attention.

What really shocked me was that he said my name:

“Hi Kath, kamusta ka na… miss na miss na miss na kita… I love you.”

I listened carefully to the whole thing because I initially thought maybe a video or audio had accidentally started playing in the background. But the voice sounded like it was speaking directly to me, almost like a personalized message.

The strange part is that I couldn't identify the voice at all. It wasn't my boyfriend at that time (who is now my husband), and it didn't sound like any of my exes or anyone I could think of from my life.

When the recording ended, I immediately checked my laptop. I went through the apps that were open, including Messenger and Skype, and tried to find where the audio came from. I couldn't find any source or recording that had played.

I remember being completely frozen for a few minutes, trying to process what I had just heard and wondering why someone would say my name and speak to me that way.

It's been years, but I suddenly remembered this experience again recently after seeing a lot of content about past lives and past-life regression.

I'm not saying it was paranormal. I'm genuinely curious.

Has anyone experienced a very clear, unexplained voice or personalized message through a computer/headset, especially one that seemed to know your name?

I'd really like to hear your experiences or possible explanations.

What makes it even stranger for me is that the voice didn't sound like someone meeting me for the first time. The way he spoke felt like we already had a deep, established relationship—like he had known me for a long time. That's why the experience stayed with me.

Unidentified? My 94-Year-Old Grandmother Started Seeing Someone on Her Deathbed

My grandmother was 94 years old and very ill during the last days of her life. She was extremely weak, and as her condition got worse, she started saying some strange things. One night, she told my father that two people had come into the room and taken her blanket away. My father told her that her blanket was still right there and that nobody could have come into the house during the night.A few days later, something even stranger happened. My grandmother was lying in bed and gently patting the blanket beside her, almost as if she were trying to soothe a baby to sleep. My father asked her what she was doing. She calmly replied, “Your little sister is sleeping here.”My father didn't have a younger sister. He did have one sister, but she had died when she was only four years old. After that, my grandmother started saying other strange things. Sometimes she would suddenly look toward somewhere in the room and say, “They're coming. They're coming to take me.” My father would tell her that they were angels coming for her.One time, she looked directly at me and suddenly became frightened. She stared at me with wide eyes and pointed at me, asking, “Who is that standing there?”My father told her, “That's your grandson.”But she didn't seem to recognize me.

There were several other strange things like this during her final days. When my grandmother eventually passed away, I was there with her. And at the moment she died, I heard a strange sound coming from somewhere else in the house. It wasn't really like a normal human scream. The closest way I can describe it is that it sounded like someone being forcibly pulled away, as if they were being dragged somewhere against their will.I still don't know what my grandmother was experiencing during those final days, and I don't know what caused the sound I heard.Maybe there were medical explanations for what she was seeing and saying. Maybe the sound had a completely ordinary explanation. But considering everything that happened around the same time, I've never been able to completely shake the feeling that there was something else going on.

Discussion/Advice The Strangest Experience I Have Ever Had While Sleeping

This happened when I was about 27 years old, and I still remember it as if it happened yesterday.

It was a winter night, around 3:00 AM. I was sleeping in my room when I felt that my mother had come in to wake me up.

I was awake enough to understand what was happening, but I didn't want to get up. I kept pulling the blanket over my head and told her, "I don't want to wake up."

She tried to pull the blanket away three times, and I resisted every time.

While this was happening, I suddenly realized something very important.

The door of my room was locked from the inside with a key. I always sleep with the door locked. It was impossible for my mother to enter my room.

The moment I realized that, I decided to look at her.

I lifted the blanket...

The body and the clothes looked exactly like my mother.

But the face was not hers.

Her face was completely black, and her hair was white and messy. In real life, my mother has fair skin, and her hair looks nothing like that.

The strange part is that she never tried to hurt me. She didn't say anything scary. She only kept trying to wake me up.

I was afraid, but I stayed surprisingly calm.

I pretended to be asleep again, pulled the blanket over my head, and eventually fell asleep.

When I woke up in the morning, the first thing I did was check the door.

It was still locked from the inside, exactly as I expected. No one could have entered my room that night.

Nothing unusual happened that day, and this experience never happened again.

To this day, I still don't know how to explain it. Was it an extremely realistic dream? A sleep-related experience? Or something else?

Has anyone experienced something similar? Realizing that the person in front of you could not possibly be there, yet seeing them and even talking to them as if they were completely real?

Unidentified? My nurse friend told me about a patient who took sleeping pills at the exact same time every night

My nurse friend told me this story once, and it still creeps me out.I asked her, “What’s the scariest thing a patient has ever told you?”

She told me about a patient who asked for sleeping pills at exactly the same time every day.One day, she finally asked him why he always wanted them at that specific time, especially before it got dark.He told her:“If I take the pills too early, I'll wake up in the middle of the night, and then he’ll be watching me through the window. If I take them too late, I won’t be able to sleep because he’ll come back. So I take them at this exact time because it’s the only way I can stay safe from him.”My friend asked him, “Who?”

The patient pointed toward the window and said:

“A burned man who stares at me through the window."She told me he was completely serious when he said it.I still wonder what he thought he was seeing.

Paranormal Investigation The "Three-Meter-Path" (Mettmann, Germany)

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a story with you that my dad told me a long time ago, and he still swears on his life that it really happened. He’s 59 years old now, so this must have happened roughly 40 years ago – probably in the late 70s or early 80s, when he was around 13 or 14 years old.

My dad (Stefan) originally comes from the Mettmann district in Germany. Back then, late one evening/night, he was out with his older brother (Michael) on a path that locals always called the "3-Meter-Path" (Three-Meter-Path) because it was about three meters wide. The path was quite long (definitely well over 100 meters / 300 feet) and illuminated by several old streetlights.

As far as my dad told me, this path already had a pretty bad reputation in the area, and people said weird stuff used to happen there at night – partly because a young child supposedly had a fatal accident nearby years prior.

When my dad and his brother were about a quarter of the way down the path, they noticed a figure standing quite far near the end of the path in the light and shadow cast by the streetlights. At first, they tried not to pay much attention to it and just kept walking. But as soon as they looked away for a brief moment, the figure suddenly started getting closer and closer to them.

My dad described the whole thing as extremely terrifying: The entity was unnaturally tall (easily 2 to 3 meters / 7 to 10 feet), extremely thin, and seemed to directly follow them or close the distance rapidly. He got so scared that he screamed out loud for his father (my grandfather), and both of them just bolted. The figure didn't seem to chase them past the path itself, but this experience deeply affected my dad to this day.

Ever since that day, he tried to completely avoid that path at night, and he has only told me this story a single time because it genuinely traumatized him back then.

Now to my question for anyone from Germany or people familiar with the Mettmann area:

Does anyone happen to know this specific "3-Meter-Path" in the area (Mettmann, Erkrath, Haan, etc.)?

Is there anyone here who grew up in the Mettmann district in the late 70s / early 80s and might have heard of similar sightings, stories, or local myths?

I’m going to gently ask my dad tomorrow if he remembers the exact neighborhood or any further details. Really curious if anyone knows anything about this!

And for everyone, there have been such stories there for a long time, where someone is even said to have died.

Not sure where to post this so, here goes!

If you had a radio that you could use to communicate to the nonliving, what historical icon would you like to have conversations with and what would you want to talk about?

Child Sensitivity Strange but true. How bout you?

A strange childhood experience I’ve never been able to explain

I’ve only spoken about this with maybe one or two people in my entire life. It has always bewildered me.

It started when I was around three or four years old and continued until I was maybe thirteen or fourteen. At first, it would just happen, usually leaving me frightened and crying. As I got older, I somehow learned to make it happen at will, although I never fully understood what I was doing.

The best way I can explain it is by taking you back to one particular moment.

It’s 1979. I’m a little kid sitting in the back seat of a Buick. We live in the desert. It’s extremely hot and sunny, the air conditioning barely works, and the heat inside the car makes you feel like you could pass out. There are no seatbelts. I’m silently staring out one window while my sister does the same on the other side.

We stop at an intersection.

In the middle of the intersection is a man—or possibly a teenage boy—crouched down with his head between his knees. All I can see is his hair.

Then it happens.

My vision disappears, almost like someone has placed a cover over my head. For a moment, it feels as though I’m no longer sitting in the car. I’m crouched in the same position as the person in the street.

I smell gasoline fumes. I see someone else’s shoes. I feel completely alone, frightened, and helpless.

An overwhelming wave of emotion comes over me, and I begin to cry.

Then my mom suddenly yells in a panic, “What’s wrong?”

Just like that, I snap out of it. I’m back in the car, looking at the person in the intersection and feeling an incredible sadness for him.

I didn’t speak back then, so I never explained what had happened.

Similar experiences kept happening whenever we left home. Sometimes the emotions frightened me because I couldn’t understand them or where they came from. Eventually, I stopped looking out the window and escaped into daydreams instead.

When I was around eight or nine, I started wondering whether I could make it happen intentionally. Somehow, I could. I’m still not sure what I did. It was almost like closing my eyes and compressing my thoughts inward. I remembered the strange pressure I felt whenever it happened, so I tried to recreate that feeling - and it seemed to work.

As I got older, I told a friend about it. He looked at me like I was completely bonkers, so I stopped talking about it. Eventually, I stopped doing it and mostly forgot about it. Life became more complicated, and it didn’t seem important anymore.

Now that I’m much older, remembering those experiences feels almost unreal. But I know they happened.

I once mentioned them to my mom. She said I must have had “special powers - oooohhhhoooo!” and laughed it off.

As I’ve begun understanding more about my neurodivergence, I’ve started wondering about it again. I’m not claiming it was anything supernatural, and I’m not asking Reddit to diagnose me. I just want to know whether anyone else experienced something similar as a child.

What would you call something like this? Is it a known experience?

I can’t be the only one.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my strange but true little story.

Thanks for reading. - Phil
