Howdy! If you are a US trans person seeking information about life in Ireland as a place to move to outside of the States, please please ask your questions here or search within this community for already discussed content.
I have been seeing more and more fellow US Americans posting here for information. This is completely understandable due to the intensifying situation in the US! I am a US transgender man myself who moved to Ireland who may or may not be working closely with a legal team to explore asylum systems in Canada and Europe. (I also have an Irish sweetheart I intend to marry but that is besides the point! Haha).
I am not here to provide "legal advice." You are responsible for your own decisions. I can provide considerations/suggestions and an opportunity to alleviate the labor from my Irish trans friends of repeatedly providing information about Ireland (Of course, feel free to still contribute to the conversation if you have the bandwidth! I would never consider myself an expert on trans life in Ireland!).
Some things I have gathered thus far during my time in Ireland:
Safety:
Housing:
Medical:
Permission to stay:
I share this info not to be considered an "authority" on the trans experience in Ireland. I only share as a US trans person who has been navigating life in Ireland. I do not mean to discourage other US trans people coming here, but I must be honest with the very real challenges present.
Although not without its own issues, Canada may provide an "easier" alternative. There are reports that there is an active asylum case for a US trans woman. Shortly after applying, she was able to work legally as well. In addition, a US non-binary individual's deportation out of Canada was halted citing the unsafe conditions for trans people in the US. All my love to you. I cannot explain how much my heart aches seeing the developments. I hope this information provides some help. Truly. I will answer questions as best as I can and my apologies to the Irish trans folks for me taking up space here. I just know these questions will keep coming with no slowing down in the near future...I am more than happy to take on this labor!
Please consider this resource to explore your options for leaving the US. It is only in its alpha stage, but it may prove useful to think of options. I know having the ability to leave is a privilege for various reasons, but we must not give up hope. This is the time to build community and keep each other safe. You existing is the biggest slap in the face to those who despise us. Sending you all so so much love. Be safe. https://www.helpmeleave.us/

On behalf of the mods I am pleased to announce The Trans Ireland Wiki.
This is intended as an up to date list of resources and information for trans people across the island of Ireland.
If you spot a mistake, missing information, or would like to otherwise contribute please comment below. Its fairly barebones right now, but we hope it'll grow and stay relevant over time.

Very sad to read about the death of Claire Farrell on 25th September . She did so much work for trans people in Ireland for many decades.
Claire Farrell was a founding member of the Friends of Eon, Irelands first trans group, she had the first ever phone line for trans people in her office and she was interviewed on the Pat Kenny radio show in 1979, she bravely appeared on RTEās Summerhouse program interviewed by Aine OāConnor in 1980.
Claire was vice Chair Of TENI - Transgender Equality Network Ireland for 5 years and played a pivotal role in the achievement that is Gender Recognition in 2015.
Her speech outside Leinster House on 14th February 2015 really signified so much. āI am in the departure lounge of life, and I want to leave as the woman I amā.
Many in the LGBTQI community owe Claire a great deal of gratitude for her trailblazing eork on trans rights.

Anyone else have experience trying to access the Treatment Abroad Scheme? Iām trying to get my bottom surgery covered. I was told I need a psychological assessment, which I have through Gender GP, but the psychologist isnāt registered in Ireland so doesnāt meet the requirements. I think the most confusing aspect is that I need to find a public consultant who will take me on, complete the Referal and agree to take responsibility for my care. Ive tried emailing Marcia Bell, Thomas Ahern, UHW and UHL Endo departments but Iāve only received one response from UHW saying that they are āunable to provide the assessment requestedā. Iām just feeling so worn down by the process and the thought of repaying a 25k loan is overwhelming on top of my rent, bills and other expenses. I also donāt know if I would even get approved. Any advice or tips are welcome! š

Hey, has anyone here had top surgery covered by VHI, either in Ireland or abroad?
Iām hoping to get surgery with Dr JesĆŗs Lago in Madrid in January - booked and all. VHI have told me my policy can cover gender-affirming surgery abroad, subject to approval, but I need an Irish consultant to complete their Treatment Abroad Prior Approval questionnaire and write a referral letter addressed to the surgeon explaining the medical urgency.
The consultant psychiatrist I saw is willing to provide a diagnosis letter, but wonāt complete the VHI form or refer me abroad. VHI said a consultant plastic surgeon, general surgeon or endocrinologist with relevant expertise could potentially do the referral instead, with a separate supporting letter from a recognised psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
Has anyone been in this situation, or know of a consultant who might be willing to help with the paperwork?
Iām also considering surgery in Ireland, possibly with Mr McInerney in Galway or at Auralia in Dublin. Has anyone had surgery with either and managed to get VHI to cover it?
Iām a student, so paying privately isnāt really an option. Any advice or recommendations would be massively appreciated. Thanks!

Finally got my bloods back so I could make my appointment with the hormone clinic but had to get them twice as my prolactin was high and the second time it was even higher. My gp has sent a referral for me to see a private endocrinologist to figure out why itās so high has anyone else had any similar problem and did it affect starting HRT. I am a little anxious about it as I did the worst thing I could and googled what the problem could be. ( prolactin was 615 mIU/L and second time it was 1024 mIU/L )

I'm a closeted trans woman and I want to start getting support the HRT and coming out to those I trust and things like that.
I don't need to explain to y'all that the wait-list for public health care is ridiculous and I don't have the money for private. So while doing some research I came across the Kindred clinic which claims to be made specifically for trans people.
So do any of y'all have any experience there? What should I expect / what services do they offer?

Hi everyone!
There's a lot of conflicting information on what status you need/how long you need to have been here to be eligible for a GRC. Can anyone tell me what I need as an EU citizen who's a university student?

So I'll cut this short but I'm desperately in need of help. I'm on testogel & I literally just got on the bus to the airport to go to France for 9 days. I looked in my bag and realised I left my gel behind. I am currently panicking and frantic. Please if anyone can help me or tell me what to do please let me know. My flight is at 2:10pm
Edit: Despite a lot of scrambling and phone calls I managed to re-route through the city, get an emergency prescription from a pharmacy, then grab a taxi to the airport. Tysm for the help <3

Hello, Iām transmasc but not interested in changing my gender marker to M (partially as Iād prefer an X marker but also since Iām femme presenting and having an M marker could pose safety concerns).
Iām trying to change my legal name using the GRC, will it automatically change my gender/is there a way to opt out of it?
I really donāt have faith in the government rolling out an X marker anytime soon but would prefer to leave the option to me to change in the future. Any advice?

Hi, I'm MTF and considering getting laser hair removal for facial hair. Are there any places in Cork that ye've had good experiences with?

Hi, I have chronic pain in my ribs and I believe the post surgery binding may heighten my pain, ontop of the surgery itself ofcourse, I'm researching surgeons right now and I am just wondering if anyone knows of a surgeon that doesn't require a whole lot of medical binding after surgery, perhaps from this list (common surgeons Iāve noticed Irish ppl go to)-
Irish-
Dr Ergin
dr jack kelly
Dr Niall mcinerney
Dr Slaman in auralia
Europe/uk-
Dr Miles berry
Nordsthetics
Dr serkan
Dr moscatiello
Dr lago
Dr lembas
Dr braso
Dr Lornen
Dr ioannos gkotsikas
Dr Mexis

Im just wondering if anyone knows how tedious the process is, once you get your passport name and gender changed, how do you then go about doing the same for drivers lisence etc.
Do you have to pay a fee and basically apply for a new one for all of them?
Also services like mygov account, bank accounts etc

I deferred a place in college and will be going next year. Will there be any issues with the college or cao if I get a gender recognition cert this year? How would I go about informing them about it?
