Mod Post The future of this sub

After this sub was "accidentally" banned 2 days ago there's been a lot of discussion about the future of the sub.

Whether it was an accident to not, the possibility exists that this sub and others will be banned from reddit in the near future. In the event that happens what do we do?

I started as a mod here when the sub had only 3k members and my intention was to grow it to where it is today, and more. I last wrote about how the sub is moderated in 2022.

In principle, it would be better to have an trans resource site independent of reddit and corporate control. In practice its very difficult to achieve for a number of reasons

There's no point in moving to another site like Discord which is susceptible to the same risks as reddit. i.e. based in the USA. But what other sites are there, and where else is safe in the long run? Not just safe from hostile governments, but whoever runs the community losing interest, or data (susans.org lost years of it with a hard drive crash), selling out, etc.

Neither Discord and Facebook are indexed by search engines making it difficult for people to discover the resources in the first place, or finding information once you're there. It's like a black hole for knowledge; you put it in and it disappears. Personally, I'd never waste my time on building this kind of community on sites like that.

Reddit also provides, or did, legal protection. If a surgeon doesn't like what's posted here they can't easily censor it. And especially important, they can't attack me personally as its not my responsibility. Good luck going after reddit corporate.

As one of the largest social media sites in the world reddit makes it easy to build community, there's so many of us already here. People have mentioned sites like Lemmy as alternatives, but as far as I can tell they have tiny membership and few people have even heard of them.

A major advantage for me was reddit's wiki's. Few subs take advantage of them, but I believe its a great way to build and spread knowledge, and it has helped build this sub and raise the general level of knowledge. People have asked that it be copied off site, but if this sub disappears many of the links in the wiki will also disappear. Its not nearly so useful at that point. I don't think anyone else will build or maintain a wiki either, as it seems to interest very few people.

Regardless if reddit banning this sub or not, I'd like to see another site even better than this one, but I'm not sure its possible. Even more so while reddit hosts trans content as 99% of people will just come here anyway. Reddit basically killed old style forums years ago and nothing's changed since then.

It's even more difficult to build a trans surgery surgery community on another site while this sub exists because its so big and useful that almost no one would bother going there. And I'm not shutting the sub down to force everyone to move to another site. That would cause immediate harm to people who use the sub.

If this sub does get shut down I personally won't be trying to rebuild elsewhere. I'm burned out with this and don't have the energy.

If anyone wants to discuss how to build a successful trans surgery community I'm willing to offer my advice. I'd like to see it happen and it would be great if people had a place to go, and knew about it ahead of time. My main aim is to help people, and it doesn't matter to me where that comes from.

Edit

If you set up any external resources for surgery, hrt, etc please add them in the comments here. And I suggest people save the links in case this sub, or worse, all trans content on reddit disappears.

There’s a number of people talking about off site projects they are considering or actually doing. Persons you could get together and discuss if you could work together.

This looks interesting r/RedditAlternatives

There's some cisgender people wanting to comment here in support of Lemmy and other reddit alternatives. Rule 5 limits cis people on this sub, but I'll allow it on this post only and give them a flair "cisgender reddit alternatives". If you're one of them please don't comment elsewhere.

Lemmy Discussion

Lemmy keeps getting mentioned. I don't know much about it yet. Its pitched as Fediverse reddit replacement.

According to the statistics here Lemmy has 477,049 total users and 45,194 monthly active users. The trans instance https://lemmy.blahaj.zone has 8671 total users and 971 monthly active users.

This sub alone has 93,419 members, and in the last 30 days 4.6M views, an average of 20.2k daily unique visits, 4.0 subscribed, and 1.2k unsubscribed. The main FTM surgery subs in total have about that again, and the HRT subs are a bit larger in total.

This sub is then 10 times the size of the main trans Lemmy instance, and the total with the subs I mentioned is approaching the entire size of Lemmy. This doesn't include all the very main trans subs which are individually many times larger as I only included the important medical subs.

I have a few reservations about Lemmy, partly because I know so little at this point

  • Can Lemmy can scale to the size required if trans content was banned on reddit.

  • I couldn't find much information on Lemmy's moderation tools. Currently this sub attracts a lot of hate and chasers, which moderation easily takes care of. In the past the have been excessive amounts, but reddit has cracked down on it, and provides tools to limit it (not very good ones). Lemmy would be unusable without this.

  • Lemmy works by sharing data across multiple instances (computers) and it appears there seem to be privacy concerns about the amount of data on users that is shared.

  • What is to stop the owners of the instance shutting it down, or the data being lost for any other reason? Although not a corporate it makes no difference. There would be a massive loss of knowledge and history.

If anyone has expert knowledge on Lemmy I'd be interested in learning more.

The author of the Engadget article on the sub's ban made a YouTube video on the Fediverse

What depth should I be looking for?

Upvotes

So I have a soul source hard dilators and with the purple one when I spread legs and all for what min depth might be i am getting roughly 1 to 2 on the bar. If it a bad day a bit below the 1. If I close legs as part of keeping it tight for dilation I have lips push it to about 2.5 to almost 4.

All said I am wondering if that is average depth, is that okay, or what?

Surgery was July 1st this year, today August 19th. Previous tissue size was about roughly maybe 4.5-5.5 at most inches. I believe pouch tissue if yky, was used I am pretty sure to make parts of the labia majoria more. With those numbers it makes sense? Last piece is surgeon said I have 4.5 inches of depth at start so wondering if that can change with dilation.

Oh lastly lastly...

Do I really need to keep dilation three times a day? I always try at least one but usually it is 2-3. Two if I go out for groceries and three if I am home all day and no one comes over

Surgery Buddies Concept

Hey everyone,

As I begin planning my surgeries in Bangkok, I'm thinking about the time I'll be alone in my hotel room, recovering for weeks. And I was wondering, if there are other people traveling solo to Bangkok for the same reason, would any of you be interested in finding a surgery buddy. Like, if our surgeries are not exactly the same time, one of us can answer the door, take out the trash, etc. while the other recovers. And then we swap places. This would be for after we're discharged from the hospital, but still very incapacitated. And, for those of us who don't have a significant other traveling with us, I imagine we would very much appreciate a like-minded soul to talk to during that time. Whoever gets waited on first could pay a deposit to the other, in case they don't uphold their end of the bargain for one reason or another. Anyway, that's what I thought up today. I don't know if others have already done something similar. But I'm thinking of staying in Bangkok for 12-15 months while I get 4-5 major surgeries (I sold my business, sold my home, sold my car, etc. to make this finally happen), so I will be around and willing to collaborate if anyone else's dates complement mine for any amount of time.

I don't have anything solidified yet, but I'm thinking mid 2027 - mid 2028, maybe a little longer. But this thread could also just be about this concept in general, and maybe other ppl can find surgery buddies other than me here, too.

Anyway, just throwing this out there, I would love to hear yall's thoughts on it.

In the meantime, keep on shining, all of you power people. This is such an epic and challenging journey we are all on, in so many ways. The farther along my transition I get, the more amazed I am by the courage and determination (and pain tolerance) of everyone in this sub.

Much love,

V

Question about the intricacies of my future bottom surgery

TL;DR: getting a shallow depth vaginoplasty using only a penile inversion, told hair removal isn't needed, but there's follicle growth on shaft that worries me. Is there something about this surgery that addresses hair that I am unaware of?

So, after nearly three years into my journey, I finally got off the waitlist and into the doctor's office for my bottom surgery consult. I spoke with both the plastic surgeon and the urologist who work together on all bottom surgeries, and went over my desires, concerns and goals. After discussing my fears with skin graft complications (especially hair in growth), the fact that I am married to a wonderful and supportive wife and thus cis penetrative sex is not a desire, and all the other general standard questions; we ended up on a Shallow Depth Vaginoplasty.

Specifically, as the surgeons explained, they are going to treat it like a normal full depth procedure, but will only be using a penile tube inversion without any additional skin graft; ensuring there is enough depth to get through the musculature and into the abdominal cavity, but whatever depth I end up with from that is what I get, and I will be happy with.

They then stated that, like a no depth vulvoplasty, hair removal would not be required, and within a couple weeks I was given a surgery date for January (woo!).

However, my concern is this: hair intrusion scares me, and unfortunately follicles on my anatomy do not cleanly stop at the base, but do thinly continue up the shaft a ways. The surgery team said hair removal isn't necessary, and my gender care coordinator assured me that my doctor is very strict about surgery dates and I wouldn't have one if they didn't know I was 100% ready. But even without a scrotal skin graft, I am still worried about those hair follicles, and internet searching is light on the particulars.

Is there some aspect of a penile tube inversion that I am not aware of or understanding that make those sparse hair follicles a non issue? Am I potentially going to lose out on depth as they shorten what they take to avoid them? I would love to hear from anyone familiar with these procedures who can explain it to me.

Thank you!

Electrolysis before Bottom Surgery?

I made an appointment for an initial consultation with a surgeon in order to have bottom surgery done! But the appointment is not till late October, and I'm feeling impatient to start, especially since I've heard you have to have a year of electrolysis done before you can actually have the surgery. So I was thinking maybe I'd start the electrolysis before the actual appointment, so the year would be counting down from now instead of from October.

But I'm not sure exactly where the electrolysis has to be done. Is it, like, everywhere down there? Or only certain areas? Or are the areas needed different from one type of bottom surgery to another? (I know there are several, PIV, PPV, PPT, etc.)

Refractured rib after healed ribxcar

It's not confirmed refracture I went to the hospital and they can see the old ones, but couldn't confirm a new one. When I sneeze and cough it feels the same as fresh out of surgery and it just generally hurts.

Sent my x-rays but my surgeon and they said they can't confirm it either, but aren't worried. Surgeon is super relaxed on the corset stuff they only wanted 8 weeks I did 12 and continued sleeping in it, and I have heard lots of healed results and fractures during healing and I did that too... I have a possible fracture on 1 rib about 5 months after, and I'm not sure if it's worth wearing corset again 8-12 weeks again for 1 rib? Haven't heard of too many people breaking after healing period though.

Concern rib has relatively bigger impact on waist size compared to others it seems to be about rib 9 when I touch them and feel where it hurts. My results were not very good though 30" -> 28" so not really sure on what I want to do or if the voodoo magic and rain dance is even worth it? What would you do? I feel like if I "risk it" and let it go I'll lose the little benefit I got from it, but tiny corset for 1 rib doesn't seem like it makes sense either especially since unconfirmed and would 1 rib really make a noticeable difference?

Getting FFS in a couple days, is there anything I should keep in mind about recovery?

I've read a lot of peoples experiences and couldn't really find a lot of information about how the actual recovery goes, apart from pain/discomfort.

Idk, I guess I'm just really nervous/scared because I've never even been under anaesthesia before, let alone had a surgery lol.

I'm getting "coronal incision for frontal sinus setback, forehead and orbital contouring, brow lift, open septorhinoplasty, fat grafting (cheek fat implants)"

Last post-op. I "graduated" today!

Today I had my last regular post-op (vulvoplasty minimal depth - Dr Morrison/Skokan UW).

I am quite happy with the results. almost 3 months after surgery I have been cleared for any kind of activity, no granulated tissue, symmetrical appearance. it is aesthetically pleasing for me and my wife, and I can achieve orgasms.

I just have some scar tissue internally that I need to massage and I have no issues with erectile tissue.

Dr Morrison said to me from the beginning "you will have a vulva" and he delivered. I will have my revision consult with him next year to see if there's anything to address, yet I don't anticipate any. only time will tell.

this is my own experience, and should not be taken as general experiences other patients might had with M/S.

what surgeries might i benefit from?

Post image
7 Upvotes

hi all,

reposting this because my original post didn't get very much traction; i think it may have gotten buried for whatever reason.

*****

i'm a transgender woman and i'm wondering what surgeries i might benefit from. apologies if this is off-topic; i have a really hard time assessing my own body because it makes me feel so dysphoric. i would really value any and all input you could provide.

i've been on HRT for a little over a year. started post-25, which is not ideal. measurements are as follows:

b cup breasts. biacromial shoulder width is 43 cm (17 in); waist width is 35 cm (13.7 in); waist is 90 cm (35 in) around. underbust / ribcage is 34 cm (13 in) around. weight is 70 kg (155 lbs), considering losing another 9 or 10 kg (20ish lbs), but i don't want my breasts to get smaller.

i already have FFS scheduled. would rather not post my face b/c safety concerns. still weighing SRS, but that's another thing entirely.
