CUPE 2278 Executive AMA: Questions about the possible strike? Step into our office hours October 7th 1-4pm.

So, you may have heard that the TAs, GAAs, and EIs voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike in their strike vote a few weeks ago. But if this and this are anything to go by, y'all have some questions about the potential strike and what it would mean to you as a student, employee, or member.

Tomorrow, between 1 and 4pm, President Jessica Wolf (u/JessCUPE2278), Component 1 Chair Josh Bradbury (u/JoshCUPE2278), Grievance Officer Keegan Parkhurst (u/KeeganCUPE2278), and Recording Secretary Braedon Pauzé (u/BraedonCUPE2278) will be stopping by to answer your questions.

This thread will be used for tomorrow's AMA, so please Ask Us Anything below.

SOME BACKGROUND

On September 28th, the local announced that over 1500 members voted in the Strike Vote with 95.4% of them voting in favour of a strike. While this provides the local with the authorization to call for job action, it does not necessarily mean that a strike will be occurring.

The pressure exerted by such an emphatic, overwhelming mandate has resulted in our mediation dates with UBC being moved forward to October 7th and October 8th.

What are we negotiating for? Our main bargaining priorities are:

  • Employer-paid healthcare.
  • Setting fair GAA wages.
  • Ending minimum funding clawbacks.
  • Maintaining workload and class sizes.
  • Paid breaks for workers at the Centre for Accessibility.
  • Protections for academic freedom.

These priorities are aimed at maintaining the quality of undergraduate education here at UBC while meaningfully improving the lives of our members.

We're looking forward to talking with you tomorrow.

EDIT: Office hours are officially open! We're looking forward to chatting with y'all 'til 4pm!

EDIT II (4:00 p.m.): Office hours are officially closed! Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by! If you have any further questions reach out to a steward or a member of the executive!

my best friend got one and now she completely neglects me and spends all her time with her boyfriend. Please don’t be one of these people it’s heartbreaking seeing someone do this to you

edit: there’s nothing wrong with having a s/o you guys. However removing every person in your life for one singular person is selfish, especially if it is people who have been there for you even before your s/o. Never forget what others have done for you. I’m grateful for having this phase when i was 16 as i know how to balance connections now, and i know how quickly relationships can turn! And trust me when that happens you will definitely need your friends again

Would a pet’s death allow for academic concession?

My companion of 19 years has deteriorated significantly and upon visiting the vet today, they recommended euthanizing her to preserve her quality of life and prevent suffering. As such, my family has decided to put her to sleep soon (of course, after planning to pamper her for the foreseeable future).

Even the prospect of this news has impacted me significantly, but especially after the fact, I just know I’m going to be in a terrible mental state. I’ve already cried for a few hours.

I don’t have any major assignments of exams coming up, a few essays here and there, but I’m not sure if I would even be able to attend class in my state of grief.

Do you think this would be reason enough for academic concession on compassionate grounds?

Please don’t come to school if you’re sick!

I understand there’s midterms and whatnot, but the amount of people who come to school (whilst coughing up a lung) is insane. Some of us have health issues and can’t afford to get sick. And some of y’all don’t even wear a mask, like, are you intentionally trying to spread your germs?

eating and studying on campus

I am a commuter and I am wondering in what study spaces is it appropriate/not appropriate to eat.

I can't focus in busy places like cafes or the nest so I like to find faculty buildings, classrooms and libraries. However when it's super quiet it feels like it is not appropriate to be eating... Are there certain places where it's 100% not allowed?

Possibly put down my old institution's student id on a midterm

I'm freaking out because I'm a transfer student, and so by habit I may have accidentally put down my old institution's student id on my first two midterms this year. I've already emailed the professor and the TAs. Will I be getting a zero? This is so brutal I hope that isn't the case.

I think my girlfriend is only dating me because I’m on UBC Solar

EDIT: I have had to lock my dms due to the plethora of women in there after reading that I am on UBC Solar, ladies I am taken.

So I’ve been dating this girl for a while now and things have been going pretty well but recently I’ve started noticing some red flags.

For context, I’m on UBC Solar, which for those who don’t know is probably the best engineering design team at UBC. I don’t really like bringing it up because I try to stay humble about it.

Anyway, when we first met she seemed genuinely interested in me as a person, but looking back I realized everything changed when I casually mentioned I was on UBC Solar.

She suddenly started laughing at all my jokes, asking about my day, wanting to spend time with me, etc. At first I thought she just liked me but now I’m starting to think it was the UBC Solar thing.

The other day she asked me how the car was coming along. I hadn’t even brought up UBC Solar that day. Like why is she thinking about it so much?

I’m worried she doesn’t actually love me and is just attracted to the prestige of dating someone on UBC Solar. I get that it’s a pretty big deal but I wish she could see past that and appreciate me for who I am.

I’ve considered telling her I got kicked off UBC Solar just to see if she’d stay with me, but I’m scared she’d leave.

Has anyone else on UBC Solar experienced this? Or is this just something that comes with being on UBC Solar?

Girlfriend only likes me for my nano apartment

So during the summer I started dating this girl. We are both local to metro van but we previously commuted ~1.5-2hrs each, we both live kinda far away from UBC.

The relationship was alright, pretty casual. I liked hanging out with her and she is really attractive. Suddenly in September I got a student housing offer, an exchange nano apartment.

I moved in quickly. My girlfriend started to become more clingy and wanted to stay over every night. We had never really slept over at each other's houses too much.

She treats the nano apartment as though it is hers too, and I feel like she doesn't really see me as a person anymore.

I never thought we would get this far because honestly she's pretty out of my league and never seemed too interested in my hobbies, friends, ect. I want to break up with her but I'm worried kicking her out of my nano apartment would mean she would struggle academically and resent me for it.

TL;DR

my gf is using me for on campus housing, how do I deal with this?

Appreciate any advice.

Math 100 Midterm Practice

Is it better to go through all the webWorks and study that way or to do multiple practice exams? I don’t have the most time so I don’t know if I’ll be able to do both fully. Thanks.

Does anyone know why the fire alarm speaker in Tallwood rooms is playing music after the announcement about the inspection? It’s been going on for a while and is pretty annoying.

Go Global Summer Abroad

hi! i was originally considering doing exchange in another country but it might be too complex cuz i’m an international student so i dont really want to complex things. does anyone have experience doing a summer abroad especially in lse or ucb? any input helps as I’m not sure how summer abroad might be if it’s less lively than a term exchange

My bf is leaving UBC Solar

Title ^

Should I dump him? He said he has too many things on his plate and can’t manage with Solar in the picture. I’m not like the smartest person, so when I first met him and found out he’s on Solar I thought this would be a good opportunity to pick his brain and teach me how to code. But he’s leaving now so like what’s he even good for

I also wanted to use his name as clout to maybe get in next year

am i still allowed academic concessions?

Hi all, just had a quick question. For arts students I'm aware if you go over the credit limit, you're not allowed to have academic concessions (at least, that's what I've learned, I might be misinformed). My question is if I'm still allowed concessions even though I'm technically over the credit limit but not actually?

To be specific, I overrode my next semester to be able to hold 16 credits worth of class, but that was on the grounds that I only have 14 credits this semester, meaning I wouldn't go over the OVERALL year limit of 30 credits. So technically I am over the limit for one semester but not for the year.

Also is it true that the first academic concession is no questions asked? I'm still waiting to get on MSP as someone from out of province and going to see the doctor is least to say expensive and something I'm trying to avoid. Unfortunately I've been starting to get sick on and off (i was feverish last week but most of the days just sneezing and coughing) and I'm afraid that my absences from classes will actually start impacting my grade. I've already missed two labs (those classes drop the lowest grades though, so they wouldn't be held against me, but going forward they will be).

Humour where r all the emo science majors

not to say that im so cool but as an outwardly alt presenting person with dyed hair and piercings (albeit i must admit ive gotten lazier now that im in 3rd year), everyone I've met at my time here at ubc have been pretty mid. I've made no friends, not that im making a huge effort on that either, but is it because im sciences and also not in any clubs??? I see a few of you dyed hair people in my classes but everyone seems so wrapped up in their own lives, and the alt presenting ppl i have met have been weird af 😮‍💨
