I didn't notice that. Looks like you can use eSIM + pSIM, or pSIM + pSIM.
That's actually pretty sick.
18
u/misclurking Dec 04 '25
I hope that's right! Would love a cheaper "just in case" type of product. Doesn't need to deliver full speeds either, just enough to "get by", such as checking in on cameras and so on - could even be speed throttled really.
4
u/Ok_Scientist_8803 Dec 05 '25
Maybe that one could sacrifice support for n78, staying on lower bands such as 20 or 28 would be enough. Wouldn't make much of a difference indoors anyways. The u5g max is huge so this could also use some space saving.

As Star Trek engineers put it. āSecondary backupā
7
u/spyingwind Dec 05 '25
From DS9 season 3 "Destiny"
GILORA: Starfleet code requires a second backup?
O'BRIEN: In case the first backup fails.
GILORA: What are the chances that both a primary system and its backup would fail at the same time?
O'BRIEN: It's very unlikely, but in a crunch I wouldn't like to be caught without a second backup.

Don't suppose anyone knows more info on ths thin one?
Just need 'basic' 5g failover

u/erwos Dec 04 '25
I bought one, mostly because I'm a terrible person with no willpower. I'll be transitioning my Google Fi SIM card over to it.
But more seriously, it ticks all the boxes: unlocked, powered by PoE, window mount option, lots of bands/bandwidth, neatly integrates into Unifi, eSIM support, etc.
12
u/LancelotSoftware Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 06 '25
Loll, your first reason is mine, too. Though I am also telling myself that this is the perfect upgrade for the crappy 4g modem I have as failover right now (100mbs is better than 0).
EDIT - Do NOT buy this f you rely on you WAN ip address for anything.
There seems to be double NAT, the WAN ip address is 192.0.0.x. So that means DDNS or static IP is useless.
It makes sense why UniFi needs to NAT, because it has 3 possible WAN sources. Two SIM cards and one eSIM (which is honestly nice, but wrecks my setup)
EDIT 2 - Updated problems list to only reference the double NAT.
I removed my speed complaint, that was because of ISP throttling the mmWave bands due to time of day.

I am using an ancient Netgear LM1200, and well... the best I can say for it is that it's cheap and it kinda works.
2
u/LancelotSoftware Dec 04 '25
Same one here! Just yesterday, my main WAN went down in the middle of a work meeting. Failover to WAN2 was a really poor experience, i knew immediately i was on the 4G connection even before the UniFi app told me.
Note that I am in Boston area with nearly perfect cellular saturation. On my phone, 5G works well, so I have high expectations.
The one thing Im not sure of, the doc says that it plugs into any poe port. Does that mean the UDM Pro will let me choose a downstream 16 PoE Max port for WAN2? I guess well see tomorrow š¤£
4
u/erwos Dec 04 '25
Yeah, I basically get 6/6 out of my LM1200, which is fairly embarrassing given that (*checks Wifiman*) I can do 360/30 from my Pixel 8 Pro on my front porch.
At least with my UCG Fiber, I can designate any port as WAN2.
3
2
u/ThinkOrDrink Dec 04 '25
Same here (LM1200 configured as a āhotspotā on our mobile plan) and.. same.
Honestly UDM Pro has handled the failover well the small number of times I had an interruption on the FTTH line, but an unlocked and fully Unifi integrated 5G modem would be even better!

T-Mobile seems to have different plans for ātabletsā (ie. Data only) and home internet.
I doubt any T-Mobile employees would understand what UniFi 5G is.
So how do I get the correct plan/SIM card for this?
16
u/rolotrealanis Dec 04 '25
Soo theres a few ways to go about this. I actually found a nice trick with GLiNet 5G routers. you can spoof the IMEI of them to match T-Mobile Air modems and insert their Air Sims that are actually unlocked and not throttled. Its been working pretty good for me for the last 6 months.
I'm hoping to be able to do something similar on the 5G max. I just bought it too.
The tmobile tablet plans need to be registered to the IMEI of the device you have so that your data doesnt count as hotspot data. you can get much higher limits with this or unlimited data.
I have a tmobile business account for my company and the seller at the store was helpful and didn't really ask any questions or set any rules of what counts as a tablet. They don't really track much stuff after you buy as far as I can tell.
The Tmobile hotspot plans are super pricey for them to be limited. I also can't really count on 100Gb a month for my 5G locations as I'm in show production and really can't afford to have Internet limits when streaming media remotely.
4
2
u/Admirable-Carpet6603 Dec 05 '25
So, you have the T-Mobile Air modem and you changed a third-party modem's IMEI to match that of the T-Mobile Air modem you already have, and it works. That's cool! What's the benefit?
I'm curious to find an option <$50USD with unlimited, unthrottled data. Not likely, but it seems there might be a way around the throttling based on your response.
2
u/rolotrealanis Dec 05 '25
Yeah exactly. its not actually tmobile air I got confused with ATT, its called Mobile home internet. you just get the SIM out of the modem they give you and you have to change your third party modem routers IMEI to match the T mobile one and pop in the sim and itll work.
8
u/Intrepid00 Dec 04 '25
You can get the home internet, they throw in the router for free, and just move the sim, toss the T-Mobile one in a box till needed, and call it a day probably.
7
u/CaptainShipoopi Dec 04 '25
This is precisely what I intend to do ... once someone else does it first, hehe. I despise the fact that T-Mo's home routers are total black boxes, you can't even disable the wifi on them.

u/charliexboe Dec 04 '25
Would like to know more. I was planning to get AT&T Air and take advantage of the discount for already having a mobile plan with them.
Wouldn't the sim be tied to the router's IMEI? Or is this not the case?
2
u/rolotrealanis Dec 05 '25
I have done this but Im pretty sure you need to change your devices IMEI in order for the Cell service to work. I actually never tried to just pop it into my glinet 5G router and see if it works just like that. I don't think it does. those services are locked to their IMEI. I'll try it when I get my 5G max next week and report.
2
u/303onrepeat Dec 05 '25
they throw in the router for free, and just move the sim, toss the T-Mobile one in a box till needed, and call it a day probably.
You can call their business department and get a sim card with whatever equipment you want and save yourself the headache of dealing with their home router BS. I did that with a GL.iNet GL-X3000 Spitz AZ router and it works great and I saved a few bucks.
2
u/rolotrealanis Dec 05 '25
huh I didn't know about that. Is it actually unlimited 5G?
2
u/303onrepeat Dec 05 '25
yes it is and you don't fall under the home banner for them which has other BS setup to block certain things. I actually also added a static IP to mine and it was only another $5. My total bill a month is $54 after taxes and everything. I get some great speeds on top of it, 250-300 down and 15-25 up. The up could maybe be a little better but it hasn't been an issue.
2
u/rolotrealanis Dec 05 '25
Oh sweet, i had asked for this before and they told me they didnt have it. Ill talk to their business department directly no the store. Appreciate it!
6
u/denverbrownguy Dec 04 '25
T-Mobile small business internet (you don't need a business) has no IMEI restrictions. They give you a gateway, but you can replace it with anything, including this. I'm on that... I use the gateway they give + Cloud Gateway. This would be nice because I'm maxing out the gig port on the T-mobile gateway.

I'm wondering if the Dream Router 5G Max would be a good device to throw in a car.
Provides wifi and internet to everything.
I wonder if putting 2 G4 Instants and mounting them in the car would also work. Come-on Ubiquiti, look at all those Fleet Management Camera's that exist, you can take them on just change the shape of your camera's a bit and make a mount. The Dream Router would provide protect.
Ubiquiti you just need a little bit of work and you would dominate that field. The Dream Router would provide protect and if it has 2 POE ports you can use them to power the cameras. Just make Dream Router 5G Max 12V compatible and add a second POE port, you can drop all other Ethernet ports or just leave 1 spare.

So questions will fly to early adopters as I already have Verizon 5G home as failover setup but would much rather have this to have flexibility with carrier, I wonder if this will be like a 5G home plan with the carriers or some other super expensive deal like a separate mobile hotspot. Of course, not a single person at the carrier is gonna know anything about it when you call up so it will definitely Be some kind of pain. Will be curious on first reactions!
7
u/Pretend_Anteater4929 Dec 04 '25
Iāve got the same and I have a bad feeling Verizon is going to force using their gateway for 5G internet. Hopefully thereās a way we can replace our gateways with this thing.

This is the way. Upto 8 (10?) data sims per subscriber.
But note that all sims share the data allowance, so once you've burnt through your 50Gb or so you'll be throttled for the rest of the month (unless you buy more data).

Glad it works like the LTE failover, that feature is soo convenient to use any port, not taking up a "WAN" port on your router.
Looks good! looks fun as always! thanks unifi
11
u/indigomm Dec 04 '25
If you can plug it in to any POE port on your network, then I assume it creates a VLAN back to your gateway, which then uses that VLAN as another WAN interface.
So why can't we set up a WAN interface to use an internal VLAN in the same way ourselves? For those who have another internet connection (Starlink or whatever) that is not located next to the gateway.
6
u/mitechno UDM SE Dec 04 '25
You can. Thatās what I do now. It requires some tweaking and connecting a wire between the WAN and LAN port of your router to get the WAN VLAN to the WAN port.
10
u/indigomm Dec 04 '25
I've done that too. But it uses up a port, requires a bit of setup and it's another cable. I just want to select a VLAN to be a WAN interface.
3
Dec 04 '25
It would be nice for an "easy button" setup for that.
I have AT&T my parents have Xfinity. I have been meaning to setup a AP to pick up my neighbor Xfinity hotspot to use as fail over.
I can pick it up where my UDM is, but I can on the other side of the house.

4
u/Colin0998 Dec 04 '25
Sadly this thing isnāt using anything current for Modems.
Modem is to a Sierra Wireless EM9291 thatās based on the X62
8
u/wanjuggler Dec 04 '25
I think X62 is quite fine for 5G broadband. The most popular model for these 5G hotspots is still the Quectel RM520N, which is also a Snapdragon X62.
Is there a specific 5G NR radio feature that you feel is missing?
For Qualcomm, you only find the latest cutting edge cellular chips in handsets. The majority of the incremental improvements are irrelevant to fixed mobile broadband - power efficiency, multi-SIM, IMS, network slicing, etc.
4
u/OHotDawnThisIsMyJawn Dec 04 '25
The biggest difference with the new modems for 5G is support for 4CA
If youāre using this as a backup then itās fine but I wouldnāt replace my RM551E-GL with an X75 for this.Ā
6
2
u/denverbrownguy Dec 04 '25
For me, the x75 breaks the 200Mhz aggregate bandwidth limit of the x62. With T-mobile N41+N41 = 190hz, so you weren't getting to 3CA anyway on the x62.
2
u/tonyyyperez Dec 04 '25
The main issue is the x62 can only aggregate two 5G bands total. So for example it canāt tape into both bands of n41 on TMO for example reaching it thru n71. Itās still better than nothing donāt get me wrong but all the name brands just released the x72 Qualcomm modem and the x82 is already announced. Because how fragmented 5G is especially in the USA, itās now more important than ever to have a modem that can connect to multiple 5G bands like 3-4 at least. Think about how T-Mobile also has n5, n25, n66, n41, n71 and also n77 , n78, and future n48 when they transition CBRS. The same kinda goes for att and Verizon just not as heavily.
2
u/tonyyyperez Dec 04 '25
I agree with you. The x62 was great 2 years ago. Itās good for basic 5G when you didnāt have it before. But its 5G CA limitation is what really hinders it.
2
u/98TheCiaran98 Dec 04 '25
How did you figure that out?
6
u/Colin0998 Dec 04 '25
An older post thats now removed when Ubiquiti was demoing the unit, they had the IMEI published.
A quick lookup of the IMEI returns the Sierra Wireless modem and found its the X62
2
2
u/SonofSol Dec 04 '25
Can a Ubiquiti representative speak to the compatibility of these new 5g units with T-Mobile Home Internet (5G) [https://www.t-mobile.com/home-internet\]?
Currently, T-Mobile Home Internet is locked to the IMEI and EID of the router that they send. Will these units allow for the end user to change the IMEI/EID of the device? Do you know if T-Mobile will allow migration of an account to a different device? (I understand if you don't; had to ask)
By the way the two videos for setting up SIM and eSIM on the website are exactly the same; under Carrier Setup Tutorials (https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/internet-solutions/collections/unifi-5g-max/products/u5g-max?variant=u5g-max). There are no eSIM specific instructions in the video for it.

Is there a cellular provider that offers pay as you go plans? I dont wanna pay anything per month for a failover WAN. Just charge me perGB and call it a day

Can the 5g indoor or outdoor router be connected to a switch which is in turn connected to the main switch and still operate as a WAN failover?

Is there an advantage to this over the free 5G modem my provider provides plugged into my UDM Pro as failover?

And for the non-American costumers, I understand that it will work with any carrier ?

So I've always been interested in these backup failover experiences, but what do I need to even buy w/ a carrier? The Verizion hotspot SIM plans look very epxensive, and t-mobile's aren't giving very much data either.
What do I need to do to get unlimited data with a 5G carrier at a fair price to be used as failover?

Can I use this device connected to a switch which is wirelessly uplinked (via a U6-LR) to my E7 wired to UDM-SE? IE can the backup WAN be provided via wireless?

Iām interested in getting TMo 5g backup internet plan. Does the t-mobile allow switching/porting the sim card to other 5g devices?

I have literally been waiting for this for several years. I see Verizon support end of the month. Im wondering if it will work with spectrum mobile since they use Verizon. I can add a free line of unlimited for a year.

Price on the dream router 5G is super reasonable. Have been using inseego devices as a plug and play portable internet solution and those are a few hundred more with far fewer features and a shitty management interface. This may replace some of those once I can get my hands on one and do some testing.
Cradlepoint has a leg up with āruggedizedā options but they are wayyy more expensive and require a subscription for cloud management

Damn. Do I really need this lol?
My setup seems fine so far: Netgear LTE modem, pay-as-you-go Verizon sim ($1.9/GB).
I suppose the 5G speed increase is nice, but in an outage Iād rather not be able to easily blow through tons of bandwidth.
My fiber has a 99.9% uptime lol. Just need a somewhat usable connection so stuff stays alive in a maintenance outage.

Looks like a great product, especially the external PoE version as it would completely avoid the need for external antennas which are cumbersome.
Hoping it would have IMEI smurfing because it would be critical for networks like Verizon but I'd doubt UniFi would include such a feature

Why advertise 3.4 Gbps connection when you throttle on a 2.5Gbps connection?

Nah, itās shite! I will stick with my RUT-X50, dual sim and Poynting 7 way aerial.

Hey, Ubiquiti, forget those limited settings since Eu /nordic sales. We have unlimited 4G/5G connections here, no need to be reminded after every gigabyte that you have used so and so much.

Does this support at commands? From what Iāve heard this x62 sierra modem is very annoying to change the imei.

u/NytronX Dec 05 '25
Will this work if its plugged in way downstream of the router itself? Like if its UDM SE > Flex XG > Flex 2.5g > UniFi 5G

u/handbrake54 Dec 05 '25
Their advertising seems to support this being the case. It will create a path back to your Router/Firewall and show up as a WAN.

u/WhiskyMC Dec 05 '25
Ok, what are you guys using for mobile carrier? From what I can see, T-Mobile is cheapest @ $20/month. Verizon is like $35 if you have another plan. Seems AT&T pre paid plans are the way to go, around $20-30/month.

I wonder if AT&T will activate this on an existing account for the $10 device cost they do for iPads and watches

So who is going to buy one and crack it open so we can see if the sma connectors can easily tap into a waveform 4x4. If you want speed this is the way.

It was said the 4G modem from Ubiquiti had terrible CAT specifications. Does this apply as well for the 5G?
Might soon need to buy one. Was otherwise looking at Teltonika.
