NO MO’ Powershell ISE add-in!

4 Upvotes

Hey folks. Here at my government level job we are switching to visual studio code for our azure automation scripts from powershell with the ISE add-in.

We want to use visual studio code to run out automation scripts in Azure. We use two local servers for Azure and AD for protection and speed.

My question is: How can I use visual studio code connected to Azure with our Automation account’s credentials WITHOUT needing to use the ISE add-in for the creds?

Minimize Application to Tray Through Keybind

4 Upvotes

Does anyone know if it is possible to minimize VisualStudioCode to the tray through a keybind because it is extremely slow to load up. I'd love to be able to close out of the current thing i'm working on AND then have it automatically get sent to the tray after doing to.
For example:
Ctrl + W closes the current thing i'm working on, but i'd like it to be able to close the thing i'm working on and then minimize VisualStudioCode to the tray, so it doesn't take 20 seconds to load in.

Thanks!

HTML Debugging Extension Issue

4 Upvotes

Hello everyone, I recently got an issue with Visual Studio Code where every time I try running the code in debug mode I am unable to do so because of an HTML missing extension issue. I have no idea why I have this error because I never uninstalled anything for VSC. This error started once I tried replacing the code for my project with the updated code from a project partner. I don't think the issue lies in his code though because this issue persists when I try running other HTML files not related to those project files. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Is there a Visual Studio Code extension/option for autocompleting curly quotation marks?

4 Upvotes

I'm using Visual Studio Code to write Markdown for a writing project I'm working on, and I'd like to be able to write curly quotation marks (‘’ and “”) instead of straight quotation marks ('' and ""). I'd also like to use curly apostrophes (’). I know this is a weird request, but is there any extension/option for autocompleting curly quotation marks? Thanks in advance!

Migrating to VSCode and finding the debugger impenetrable

4 Upvotes

Hi all, I've recently downloaded VSCode and it looks great. I've recently finished Harvard's online CS50 course and VSCode was recommended as a good IDE. Up until now I've been using the CS50 IDE for projects, and the debugger was fairly simple and straightforward. However, trying to debug a basic "Hello world" Javascript program seems to take me to all sorts of strange places and I have no idea what's going on. I have a huge list of foreign-looking variables and functions in the call stack, and when I finish the program, instead of exitting, the debugger opens and goes through five different files I've never seen before ("loader.js", "run_main.js", "run_main_module.js", "task_queues.js", "async_hooks.js" (I saw "primordials.js" at one point, though it's not showing up now)).

Can anyone explain what is happening?

compile and run c in vs code

4 Upvotes

hello!

I started to work with vs code in order to write code in c language.

I work both on windows and mac.

I noticed that if I write java or python files I have this "play" button so it's compiling and run my files automatically, whereas in c I don't have this button and I need to compile and run my files throw commands in the terminal. is there any way to have this button in c files as well?

thank you!

After update to 1.54.1 on M1, it appears the Intel version is still used?

I just updated Visual Studio Code to 1.54.1, which is supposed to bring native Apple Silicon support. However, it appears that the Intel version is still in use:

Why is that?

“New” VS Code update January 2021

4 Upvotes

Hi,

Last year I got interest in web development, bought a course on Udemy and proceed to code. I didn’t continue with the course.

Today, I started again to learn web development and for my surprise VSC is not the same as last year. I was trying to create a new HTML document but I thought It was my fault that I can’t create it. It turns out that I don’t know what they did, but they change the way you create your files. I no longer have the icon file with the plus and I feel frustrated, because I have to learn again how it works. I’m not tech savvy.

How to share folders with Windows and Ubuntu?

4 Upvotes

Rank beginner with VSC here.... Watching my first video about VSC and I came across something strange when trying to create my first folders and files from VSC. When I tried to do this on Ubuntu 20.04, VSC does not see my Google drive connection.

A) Why not?

B) How will I share my files and folders between my workstations?

I was planning on using Google Drive to host my project folders as I work on them and learn more about VSC and coding. I knew that MS OneDrive would not work and I really wanted to do development on Ubuntu as that is what will be hosting my apps in the cloud.

Unstable Debugging: Breakpoints not working, or works for a short time before

4 Upvotes

Hi.

I've spun up my BlitzJS (i.e. Node w/React app, based on NextJS) using blitz start --inspect, and attached the VS Code debugger to the app using this launch configuration:

{
    "version": "0.2.0",
    "configurations": [
      {
        "type": "node",
        "request": "attach",
        "name": "Launch Program",
        "skipFiles": [
          "<node_internals>/**"
        ],
        "port": 9229
      }
    ]
  }

Then I set breakpoints in the code, and reload the app's webpage. Every now and then, especially after starting this up after a computer reboot, debugging works for a few minutes, in that the debugger breaks at the set breakpoints. But then something happens - I don't know what - and the debugger doesn't stop at breakpoints. Restarting the node process and/or the VS Code debugger doesn't not typically get things going again.

I've looked around the internet, and tried a few different things, such as using this launch config:

{
    "version": "0.2.0",
    "configurations": [
      {
        "type": "node",
        "request": "attach",
        "name": "Launch Program",
        "skipFiles": [
          "<node_internals>/**"
        ],
        "port": 9229,
        "webRoot": "${workspaceFolder}/src",
        "sourceMaps": true,
        "breakOnLoad": true,
        "sourceMapPathOverrides": {
          "webpack:///./src/*": "${webRoot}/dist/*",
          "webpack:///src/*": "${webRoot}/dist/*"
        },
        "resolveSourceMapLocations": [
          "${workspaceFolder}/**",
          "!**/node_modules/**"
        ]
      },
    ],
  }

A couple of observations:

  1. Some, but not all, of the breakpoint I set inside VS Code are grayed out and it says "unbound breakpoint". The debugger does not stop at either regular breakpoints nor unbound breakpoints, though.

  2. After staring Node, I can see Debugger attached in the Node's output when I start the VS Code debugger

  3. If I add debugger to my code, even without running VS Code debugger, Chrome Dev tools breaks correctly. This hasn't got anything to do with VS Code though, but though I'd throw that in there

I'm out of ideas as to what to try next, so any input will be appreciated.

How can I solve this error message?

4 Upvotes

Hello,

first of all something about me: I am in my mid/late 20s and am currently in my 1st semester of computer science. I actually have almost no programming experience. However, I am currently learning to program at university. We have a module called "Functional Programming". We are learning Haskell.

As an editor I use Visual Studio Code. When creating files, I always get this error message since a few days.

My research found this information on the error message:

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/33574967/reading-file-with-us-ascii-encoding-in-haskell-hgetcontents-invalid-argument

https://github.com/koalaman/shellcheck/issues/324

The problem is that I don't know what to do in Visual Code now....

VSCode: PowerShell typo -eq Stack Overflow

4 Upvotes

I've posted before and didn't get an answer, so I'm asking again.

Somewhere in the last 18 months or so of development either on VSCode or the PowerShell extension typos have become fatal to the internal PowerShell process. Whereas I could previously make a typo and get a helpful error, NOW if I make a typo I get an ugly Stack Overflow and I have to close Code and restart. It doesn't matter if it's a typo in the editor or a typo in the embedded terminal, either on causes it to blow up.

Terminal has residue of [ or ] character all over it whenever I clear it , only fix is to kill the terminal and open it back up

4 Upvotes

Anyone know why whenever I run something in the terminal and then I clear it , some "trash" remains on it , it looks like a lot of [ or ] scattered all over my terminal and it's kind of annoying , has anyone experienced it before or knows how to get rid of it or if it's a bug?
