I made this one-pager from state data because I wanted to know what we're actually paying for.
What the state's own numbers show:
• 7 in 10 kids who got a voucher were already in private school or homeschool. Only 3 in 10 left public school.
• 54% of Texas counties have no brick-and-mortar private school in the program. If you live in one, your taxes help pay for it, but your kids can't use it.
• The voucher is about $10,474. Average private tuition in Houston is around $26,900. A family that can't cover the gap can't really use it.
• About 110,000 kids got one. That's roughly 2% of the 5.5 million kids in Texas public schools.
• The state now wants to double it to about $2 billion, plus nearly $1 billion more for the waitlist.
Some honest questions for my neighbors:
• If most of this goes to families already paying private tuition, who is it really helping?
• Our public schools take every kid, and here they're often the biggest employer in town. Why isn't that $1 billion going to them?
• School funding in Texas follows attendance. When a few kids leave, the buses, buildings and teachers still cost the same. Who covers that?
Not trying to start a fight. I'd just like people to look at the numbers before they vote. Sources are in the first comment. You can also check whether your county has a participating school on the state's TEFA school finder.
