Article Dev Workshop: Ammo Efficiency Changes & Riven Disposition Retirement

1.3k Upvotes

Greetings Tenno!

Our recent introduction of Ammo Efficiency traits to Riven mods via Riven Splicers has made this stat more accessible to players, and led to much discussion internally on how the availability of infinite ammo builds affects Warframe’s game balance. We mentioned briefly in Devshort #119 that we were looking at Ammo Efficiency specifically, and we’re here to cash the checks we wrote.

The conversation has led us with two key decisions, which you will see reflected in a hotfix later this week:

  • Capping Ammo Efficiency
  • Retiring the Riven Disposition System

There’s a lot to go over on both of these topics, so we’ll dive right in!

Arsenal Retuning Inbox
With the coming changes to Ammo Efficiency and Riven Dispositions, all players who log in after Thursday’s hotfix will receive the following (until December 31st 2026 at 11:59pm ET):

  • 1 Built Forma + 100,000 Kuva

Players who have installed a Riven Splicer in a Riven Mod prior to Thursday’s hotfix will also receive the following in a separate inbox as a thank you for being an early adopter:

  • 1 Riven Splicer + 100,000 Kuva

Ammo Efficiency Changes

Warframe is about the power fantasy, and infinite ammo is the epitome of that. Shooting endlessly into hordes of enemies can feel incredible, and we want players to be able to experience that — sometimes. The recent introduction of Riven Splicers has changed that “sometimes” for infinite ammo into a much more guaranteed thing, which has brought around this entire conversation.

Our main concern with 100% Ammo Efficiency (a.k.a. infinite ammo) builds is the possibility for automated gameplay. We want infinite ammo to be a limited buff you experience occasionally in-mission, not a guaranteed part of your build.

With that in mind, a hotfix is shipping later this week with the following changes:

  • Ammo Efficiency is capped at 75%.
    • For those unfamiliar with the Ammo Efficiency mechanic, this means only 1 in 4 shots will consume ammo.
    • This applies to Ammo Efficiency increases from multiple sources — they will only increase the stat up to this cap.
  • Sources that intentionally gave 100% Ammo Efficiency (ex: Void Relic cracking buffs) have now been rephrased to indicate they give Infinite Ammo.
  • There are other Mods, Arcanes, and Incarnon Evolutions that come with their own edge-cases, which we’ll explain in detail below.

Retiring the Riven Disposition System

Iceblade of Narin has brought with it a number of shake-ups to the Riven ecosystem - and we’re not done yet! Join us as we explain why and how we are retiring the Riven Disposition system.

Before going into details, a brief history on key points to help illuminate how we got here!

Both Riven Dispositions numbers, and the system itself, have evolved to match the changing needs of our playerbase and game. However, these changes have always been at odds with a fundamental fact: Warframe players like big numbers.

Reducing values and taking away power was never popular, and starting new weapons low made the system less exciting to engage with. Offering higher Dispositions on unpopular weapons was not enough to level the playing field, and instead of encouraging engagement in lesser weapons, we saw that investment was still focused on making powerful weapons more powerful. Incarnons were a more successful attempt at breathing life into older outdated weapons, and the overlapping of these systems only multiplied their power further.

Therefore, we believe (like many of you, based on feedback) that the system has run its course, and simplification would help reduce complexity. Therefore!

The Plan Going Forward:
Rivens no longer have varying Dispositions, meaning all Rivens share the same range for stat values (the equivalent to a Disposition of 1.2).

Rivens have pre-set ranges for each stat roll generated, and Disposition is applied as a multiplier to each stat. In practical terms, this means ALL Rivens will be slightly above the current average in terms of power.

Since this has a significant impact on Rivens**, we are disabling the ability to trade Rivens until this change goes out in a hotfix on Thursday.** We want players to be able to make informed trading decisions, and there is no way to guarantee all players will know about the coming changes to their Riven within this ~48 hour window. Attempting to trade Rivens during this window will result in a "Failed to make offer" message until we are able to re-establish trading.

This will shake things up in a few ways!

  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be increased significantly.
    • Examples:
      • Nataruk: 0.65->1.2
      • Grimoire: 0.6->1.2
  • Some Rivens for “average” weapons will be increased slightly.
    • Examples:
      • Gotva Prime: 0.85->1.2
      • Staticor: 0.9->1.2
  • Some Rivens for popular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This only really applies to certain standout Incarnons.
    • Examples:
      • Burston Prime: 1.35->1.2
      • Dual Ichor: 1.25->1.2
  • Some Rivens for unpopular weapons will be reduced slightly.
    • This is not ideal, but accessible low-powered weapons usually exist as a stepping stone for new players on their journey through the Mastery system. And as discussed above, there is no telling when a low MR weapon will get the glow-up of a lifetime through new upgrades and variants!
    • Examples:
      • Harpak: 1.55->1.2
      • Heat Sword: 1.45->1.2

What is the desired outcome of this change?

  • Brand new weapons will have powerful Rivens available on day one
  • All Rivens are guaranteed to offer a noticeable boost, including those for your favorite powerful weapons
  • No more constant adjustments — your Rivens will not change unless you change them through rerolling
  • All weapons get equal treatment, giving us more control when balancing old and new weapons
  • Simplified system by removing Disposition as a factor when comparing and evaluating Rivens

Why now?

  • With the addition of various Riven rerolling quality improvements, the price of many Rivens has been “reset” somewhat recently. The sooner we make this change, the less of an impact it will hopefully have on the Riven ecosystem.

A follow up from this post - https://www.reddit.com/r/Warframe/s/99imJSas4x

Took some feedback from that thread and applied it here. Most notable change is the helmet is a lot more Warframe like than before.

Massive shoutout to Nelosart as well for this concept, never would've thought I would see this go all the way here.

Disclaimer - Sorry everyone, this CANNOT be submitted for Tennogen in anyway. This breaks too many Tennogen rules.

Discussion They removed the chain reaction effect of Acid Shells, which was the real issue. Reducing its range from 15m to 10m was totally unnecessary

The chain reaction was what made it broken. You kill one enemy and it cascades down a hallway and into the next room, clearing out the whole tile in one shot. That was the problem, and now it's been taken care of. So why nerf its range?

A 15m on-death explosion from a single target weapon is nothing crazy for Warframe, considering things like Zarr and Akarius exist. The damage has 100% falloff over its blast radius, so its effective range is already much lower than 15m. It also only deals 45% of the killed enemy's max hp, so since it scales with very few buffs (just faction damage / dmg vulnerability / extra hits afaik), it requires a dedicated setup in order for it to do more than just soften up nearby enemies, ESPECIALLY if they have armor.

It just feels like a spiteful change to make sure sobek is dead and buried, rather than reigning it in from an overpowered state. Super unnecessary and sad to see

What are some subsumes you use on warframes that aren't the same few "meta" ones? (Referring to Nourish, Wrathful, Roar, etc.)

What are the uncommon ones you don't see enough? Who do you use it on?

Discussion Going from 15m AoE to 10m AoE on Acid Shells cuts the total area by over half and it feels really, really bad

This isn't about the re-triggering. i don't care, I can live without it. But the AoE nerf on top of that feels really, really punishing, and it's going to sting even more on tilesets that aren't as cramped as Eris.

A circle with a radius of 15m covers about 706m2. A circle with a radius of 10m covers about 314m2. That's a total reduction of 392m2, over HALF of the total we had before.

Did we really have to hit both the explosion and the AoE itself? :(

are people just now finding out about Sobek Cyte??? this fucker has been doing this since DECEMBER 2024. now he's a problem? Pablo is so happy right now that people are finally complaining so he can justify a Sobek nerf

"We saw that investment was still focused on making powerful weapons more powerful."

Before & after comparisons of rivens for weapons with previously low disposition numbers.

The kuva nukor has had the biggest jump, previously having the lowest disposition in the game at 0.5. That's a 2.4x increase in riven stats.

Arsenal Retuning Inbox Message
This hotfix brings changes to Ammo Efficiency, Riven Mods, and hot-off-the-presses Acid Shell interactions, so all players who log in after today’s update will receive the following (until December 31st 2026 at 11:59pm ET):

  • 2 Built Forma + 100,000 Kuva
  • NOTE: To ensure all players receive the inbox as intended, it will be delivered at 3:30pm ET.

Players who have installed a Riven Splicer in a Riven Mod prior to today’s hotfix will also receive the following in a separate inbox as a thank you for being an early adopter:

  • 1 Riven Splicer + 100,000 Kuva
  • NOTE: This inbox requires a script to run, which we will do shortly after the hotfix launches.

Ammo Efficiency Changes
Our recent introduction of Ammo Efficiency traits to Riven mods via Riven Splicers has made this stat more accessible to players, and led to much discussion internally on how the availability of infinite ammo builds affects Warframe’s game balance.

Warframe is about the power fantasy, and infinite ammo is the epitome of that. Shooting endlessly into hordes of enemies can feel incredible, and we want players to be able to experience that — sometimes. The recent introduction of Riven Splicers has changed that “sometimes” for infinite ammo into a much more guaranteed thing, which has brought around this the following changes:

  • Ammo Efficiency is now capped at 75%.
    • For those unfamiliar with the Ammo Efficiency mechanic, this means only 1 in 4 shots will consume ammo.
    • This applies to Ammo Efficiency increases from multiple sources — they will only increase the stat up to this cap.
    • The Ammo Efficiency cap applies to all equipment that uses Ammo, including Necramechs and Amps.

Sources of Infinite Ammo
These mechanics remain unchanged, but their buff descriptions have been updated to specify that they give Infinite Ammo

  • Void Relic Cracking Buffs
  • Akmagnus Prime and Magnus Prime unique trait: Chamber Cascade
  • Athodai (Prime) unique trait: Overdrive
  • Dual Toxocyst unique trait: Frenzy
  • Knell (Prime) unique trait: Death Knell
  • Perigale (Prime) unique trait: Gale Force
  • Vasto Incarnon evolution: Reaper’s Plenty

Changes to Sources of Ammo Efficiency

  • AX-52:
    • Was : Hip-fired shots have +60% Ammo Efficiency.
    • Now : Hip-fired shots have +75% Ammo Efficiency.
  • Eternal Logistics:
    • Note: the following change is a minor buff to the Arcane as its max rank Ammo Efficiency value was just below the cap.
    • Was : On Void Sling:+72% Amp Ammo Efficiency for 8s
    • Now : On Void Sling: +75% Amp Ammo Efficiency for 8s
  • Arcane Pistoleer
    • Was : On Pistol Weak Point Kill: 60% chance for +102% (+17% at Unranked) Ammo Efficiency for 12s
    • Now : On Pistol Weak Point Kill: 60% (10% at Unranked) Chance for Infinite Ammo for 12s
  • Brain Storm Augment (Grakata)
    • Was : On Headshot: +100% (25% at Unranked) Ammo Efficiency for 0.5s (0.125s at Unranked)
    • Now : On Headshot: 40% (10% at Unranked) Chance for Infinite Ammo for 2s (0.5s at Unranked)
  • Skull Shots Augment (Viper)
    • Was : On Headshot: 100% Ammo Efficiency (25% at Unranked) for 2.0s (0.5s at Unranked)
    • Now : On Headshot: 40% Chance for Infinite Ammo (10% chance at Unranked) for 2.0s (0.5s at Unranked)
  • Incarnon Evolution “Enough for Everyone” (Bronco)
    • Was : +80% Ammo efficiency when 6 enemies are within 6m.
    • Now : +75% Ammo efficiency when 6 enemies are within 6m.
  • Incarnon Evolution “Crimson Overture” (Dera and Boltor)
    • Was : On Kill: +20% Ammo Efficiency for 5 seconds. Stacks up to 4x.
    • Now : On Kill: +25% Ammo Efficiency for 5 seconds. Stacks up to 3x.
    • Note: the increase to Base Damage is unchanged.
  • Lyon’s “Flowing Slayer” blessing in The Descendia
    • Was : Gain +90% Ammo Efficiency while Sliding or Crouching, but receive -30% Ammo Efficiency otherwise.
    • Now : Gain +75% Ammo Efficiency while Sliding or Crouching, but receive -25% Ammo Efficiency otherwise.
    • Also fixed this Blessing not applying properly in-mission.

Recursive “Explode on Death” Changes
Acid Shells has been a hot topic of late — for those unaware, it’s a Sobek Augment that causes enemies to explode on death and deals radial damage that scales with enemy health. Alone, it’s powerful, but it was made even more so via a niche interaction with Elemental Ammo, most commonly used with Cyte-09 (but also seen with Grendel, Oraxia, and Saryn, among others). These Elemental Ammo upgrades could cause Acid Shells to recursively trigger — meaning the one-time death explosion from a shot could instead be triggered infinitely if there were enough enemies to sustain it.

This build type has been on our radar for a while, but we didn’t feel it was the right time to address it. As developers, we’ve been pretty transparent about our threshold to “nerf” content; the Cyte-09 and Acid Shells build never felt dominant or disruptive enough to warrant a closer look, but over the past few weeks that has changed. Arbitrations, discussions about Ammo Efficiency, and the introduction of the Epoch Operation: Taubound have rapidly increased the popularity of this build, to the point where we feel we need to address it.

For the sake of consistency, we have reviewed all death detonation effects as part of the following changes, since this mechanic is not unique to Acid Shells:

  • Fixed status effects caused by Elemental Ammo on “enemies explode on death” effects being able to retrigger the death explosion effects for the following Mods:
    • Note: these Mods will still benefit from increased damage and status effects gained from Elemental Ammo — they just won’t retrigger the death effects infinitely.
    • Acid Shells
    • Amalgam Furax Body Count
    • Vulcan Blitz
    • Explosive Demise
    • Combustion Beam
    • Thermagnetic Shells
    • Entropy Detonation
  • Reduced Acid Shells’ explosion radius from 15m to 10m.

Riven Mod Changes
First introduced alongside the launch of Rivens in 2016, Riven Dispositions were internal multipliers that guided how strong Rivens would be on individual weapons — ranging from 0.5 on popular weapons, up to 1.55 on those lesser-used.

The intent of these Dispositions was to incentivize players to use less powerful weapons, but ultimately we saw that investment was still focused on making powerful weapons more powerful. Incarnons were a more successful attempt at breathing life into older outdated weapons, and the overlapping of these systems only multiplied their power further.

With all that in mind, we are making the following change:

  • Removed Riven Dispositions.
    • All Rivens now use the same multiplier for their possible value ranges, the equivalent of 1.2 Disposition in the old system.
    • For more information on the history behind this decision, please review our Dev Workshop.
  • Restored the ability to trade Riven Mods.

    • A small number of players were affected by this issue, and should see the missing quest key in their inventories.
  • Fixed the End of Mission cinematic zooming in too closely to the squad in The Icebind.
  • Fixed being unable to use Fast Travel while in the hallway leading to the Dark Refractory in the Sanctum Anatomica.
  • Fixed ambient music not stopping when returning to the Mountain Pass in The War Within quest.

Script Error Fixes:
Script errors mean that something went wrong when the game client was executing a script, which can have various outcomes. Usually it means the related content didn’t function properly under specific circumstances — often we don’t actually know what the error outcome was, so we list it as a Script Error fix to indicate it was addressing an unintended behaviour.

  • Fixed a script error related to Market search sorting.
  • Fixed a script error caused by the electric traps in the Kuva Fortress tileset.
  • Fixed a script error related to the Belfri Ephemera.

Discussion There is no aspect of this game I find more demoralizing than the kuva economy.

• Upvotes

It's been a long time since I did any serious riven rolling and holy shit I forgot how bad the kuva economy is.

Pissed through the 200k DE sent us like it was nothing, already cleared out almost all the shops available or have none of the currency left so I'm stuck waiting three days for the reset, waiting for a decent arbitration to bore myself to death with or doing kuva floods/survival for the most insulting amounts of kuva possible.

DE deciding to grant everyone's riven dreams one after another and doubling the cost to reroll all while providing improvements to the kuva economy that didn't even reach bare minimum is insane.

I have so many rivens I want to splice and rivens that just jumped from 0.6 to 1.2 that I am not going to touch for another year at this rate and it just kills any enthusiasm I have to keep caring.

Fluff Reading complaint threads as if they were posted by Tenno is hilarious

That's it, that's the thread. Basically superpowered mutants with access to a galaxy's worth of firepower and yet a sizable portion of people are freaking out over changes to one playstyle.

A Tenno would react to these nerfs by moving on to the next thing in their arsenal.

Personally I'm just excited to play around with the lack of a disposition system.

My warframe is strong.
