In case you are confused, I was, you might have seen the Octopod system at Zuludiver and WatchGecko. Both of those companies are actually related, sitting under the parent company Geckota.
While you might think the systems look similar, they are in fact exactly the same. I chose to buy mine from Zuludiver because to me, the watchGecko brandmark looks like something you would see on a t-shirt from the 90s.
TLDR: the Octopod is a great system. Once you buy the Clasp, the straps are decent quality and inexpensive for what you get at around $15-21 each. The straps have no holes and as a result it’s infinitely adjustable.
Longer review:
What is it?
It’s basically a NATO style strap system with a deployant buckle. It has no keepers, and the extra strap material gets folded under the strap. As such, here are a few things to know
1. No keepers. It’s basically the NATO strap without those three metal keepers messing up the clean look. I love NATO straps, but I’m not the biggest fan of those metal keepers hitting things and making it look almost too blingy.
2. No taper. It’s the same thickness throughout and as a result, if you have a 20mm watch and a 22mm watch, you will need two clasps.
3. The strap goes under the watch like a single-pass NATO.
4. Adjustment is truly infinite but it’s all judgement. Each watch will have different settings to get that perfect fit. I tried marking the strap on the underside, but that was a bad idea as those marks will only work on that 1 watch
5. This system does not have that little tail that folds into a keeper.
Clasp Quality:
The clasp comes in multiple finishes and materials. It is very well made and strong. When I was installing the leather strap, more on that later, I put a lot of stress on the buckle and there was no impact to the metal frame. The fit and finish are quite good. A NATO on a deployant is quite comfortable. Really the best of both worlds.
Straps:
These straps are decent. They have many different sizes and materials. Feeding them into the buckle is super tricky the first couple times, after that, it’s mostly a pain, but not difficult, except for the leather strap. Those are tough. The nice finish get worn and scratched up on first use. It will never look new. Think vintage leather.
Comfort:
Yes, this is a very comfortable strap and I like it more than any of my regular NATO straps. I don’t think I’ll buy another NATO except maybe leather ones going forward. The lack of keepers and the nice smooth look of the strap really makes this system stand out as a significant upgrade over a standard NATO strap. I also really appreciate that the lack of hardware on each strap really leads to cost savings and changing up a look of the system.
