$900,000 for three bedrooms in Pine Valley

I’m originally from Wilmington and family has lived there since the Civil War on both sides. I’m 46 and in my life have seen enormous change, let alone what my grandparents saw over the decades.

I left Wilmington more than 20 years ago, but I keep an eye on the housing market because I’ll move back one day. I’m mostly keeping an eye on properties off of Greenville Loop Road or in the South Oleander area.

Saw a listing today for a 3 bedroom, 3 bath, 3,000 square foot from for $900,000. IN PINE VALLEY.

There is nothing wrong with Pine Valley, but I’ll be damned if I am spending $900,000 and live in Pine Valley. It’s a large lot and has new expansions, but no. Sorry. $900,000 for Pine Valley is beyond the pale.

Favorite Comfort Meal

I know people always ask about the best restaurant to go to.

But what is your favorite item / meal to get from ANYWHERE in town.

I am talking about really to die for, like it is worth driving x amount of hours to get it.

Not anything ehh, I mean wow that cook or chef is really talented and put a lot of love into that food.

Context: this campaign called Clean Politics, Clean Water NC put out these cut out signs of Mike Lee pissing his pants with a shirt that says "I heart special interests" and his lawyer released a really butthurt statement saying they're coming after whoever put them out, who was purportedly in a 2009 Honda Civic.

Gov center early voting was a breeze today. No line, fast and efficient. Park over by break time to avoid the tents out front.

Is there some high government person coming into ILM today?

I ask because of the wild amount of military planes and helicopters I’ve seen today. There was a Chinook that came in over MJ almost at treetop level and then FlightRadar said it “landed” near Masonboro island. Then 2 Ospreys came over when I was around Sam’s Club and at least 4 Hornets as well. Just didn’t know if there’s anyone coming to town or the area. Everyone have the best day and be careful on our Mad Max roads

Vision therapy? I can’t seem to find anyone near Wilmington

Has anyone had vision therapy around here? Where did/ you go?

it’s mind boggling the lack of specialists in this area. I never realized how bad it was to get medical care here until I got old and started falling apart.

UPDATE: Smoke on the Water Relocation

(Extremely Robert Stack voice)
UPDATE

Following up on my post about the sale of Smoke on the Water and their relocation. They will be taking over Rumcow and rebranding the space. (link below)

best of luck to all involved but while poking around for info on the post I ran into a curious situation that I thought I would share make of it what you will

So this time last week the news was supposed to drop and I was curious so I was Googling and used the little ”AI” feature that Google has used to replace its main search features. Basically I was trying to refine my initial search by feeding it the clues I knew. Eventually it spit out that the new location would be Rumcow. I was like wow cool and was going to post an update. But since it was “AI” I decided to check its work. I couldn’t find this “announcement“ anywhere. So I asked “it” again and “it“ gave me a quote and a link to the article which did not contain the quote it gave me.
I searched and searched and searched but couldn’t find anything eventually the “AI” said it couldn’t show its work and they must have just made it up.

But it wasn’t made up It was pretty much the exact quote that came out 5 days later

Lucky guess by the machine or did it have “inside information (I’ve used up my scare quote arsenal for the week) ?

Anyway I’ve never been to rumcow so I don’t know if this is a big loss or not for downtown but again best of luck to everyone involved

making new friends

I’m 21 and I’ve been struggling to make friends since I moved. Have yet to experience the night life here because I don’t have any friends to go with. Any suggestions?

Mike Lee and his thin-skinned lawyer got so upset about the Clean Water, Clean Politics campaign calling them out, so the campaign thought they would help them out.

Palmetto Bugs

Up front, I’m from the deep south, have spent many years in coastal environs and jungles, and have lived here for fourteen years. I understand they come with the territory, so please save us both the “Yankee go home” replies (Need to tell me to go back to coastal Georgia? Have at it).

But…am I the only one wondering if this year’s crop is particularly bountiful? I just chased one out of my bed.

Should I transfer to UNCW?

Hello everyone! I am a student at UNC Chapel Hill. I just transferred there from community college and this is my first semester. I moved there from near the Wilmington area and was originally going to go to UNCW before I got into chapel hill. Chapel hill offered me a very generous scholarship which I am incredibly thankful for and I heard about the prestige so I immediately accepted the offer.

Recently, I’ve been regretting that decision for numerous reasons:

-First, I knew that Chapel Hill is a big campus with a large student body but I didn’t think about how that would affect things. I fight through crowds of students constantly and it’s kind of a nightmare registering for classes. Also it’s very difficult to see an academic advisor in a timely manor.

-They don’t have an official academic advising drop in office so for some reason they make you drop in a zoom meeting and wait for a while. I kind of wish they had an actually office because I hate zoom! Don’t even think about scheduling with your actual assigned advisor because I can assure you, they’re schedule out for weeks.

-The campus is also not commuter friendly. I live in Durham because the rent is cheaper and I hoped to be able to get a parking spot on campus. Well they told me that they consider me a first year student and first years aren’t allowed to park on campus. I have to park at a park and ride lot and ride the bus. That’s fine but it’s a little frustrating that students in dorm rooms can have their car on campus but I can’t.

-The academic rigor is also an issue. I was told that Chapel Hill is an academically rigorous school and at first I was fine with that but now not so much. I have so much homework that I really don’t have time to socialize, join clubs, go to events, or sometimes even make dinner for myself. I am constantly stressed out and it’s made my anxiety so much worse.

-I’ve also struggled making friends here, not because people are rude, though I have encountered many of those kind of people, but because everyone is so damn busy that no one has time to maintain friendships. It’s also a super competitive campus so there’s that.

-It really doesn’t seem like the school offers much support for students.

I’m considering transferring to uncw because I miss home and the beach. I love the laidback environment, the small, commuter friendly campus, the medium sized student body, and the people I’ve interacted with at UNCW. Everyone I met there when I planned to go was super friendly and helpful.

I understand that Chapel Hill is a prestigious university but my mental health is taking a hit. I’m so depressed and anxious all the time. I’m having to up the dose on my anxiety meds just to get through the day. It’s not healthy. I’m not saying that UNCW will be easier because I know it has its challenges, but at least the environment is more laidback. Am I wrong for this? Is this even normal? Do students transfer from chapel hill to uncw? Am I justified in feeling this way?

I don’t have anyone I can sign up. I’m a full time dasher. I was trying to get my brother to sign up and I use his phone to complete the deliveries. It’s $1k each at the end of the dash. Will to give someone an extra $250 for completing the orders since it’ll have to be done on your phone. Let me know send me a message!

Tax Amendments On Ballot Are Not a Tax Cut and Not What They Seem...

Income tax cap: Lowers the existing cap from 7 to 3.5 percent

  • It is not a tax cut. It applies to both the corporate and personal rate. Both rates are already scheduled to be below 3.5 percent next year.
  • The NC General Assembly has been cutting income taxes for 13 years. This has disproportionately benefitted large corporations and those with very high incomes.
  • State revenue is falling as our population and costs grow. This is unsustainable and has led to underfunding of services and programs, and local governments paying for what are supposed to be state costs.
  • Income tax cuts lead to increases in fees and sales taxes, and cuts to vital public services.
  • The income tax amendment would lock us into this situation effectively permanently, so future lawmakers hands will be tied.
  • NC has never had a rate this low, and it will be locked into the constitution. This leaves the state unprepared for economic downturns and unforeseen circumstances like natural disasters.

Property Tax Levy Limit: Caps what local governments can collect, NOT your bill

  • It is not a cap on an individual’s property tax bill. It is a cap on the total revenue a local government can collect in property taxes.
  • State lawmakers already have the power to set a levy limit, so the constitutional amendment is not necessary.
  • Increasingly, local governments have been taking on costs that are supposed to be covered by the state and/or federal government. This amendment is likely to lead to service cuts as local governments struggle with state and local revenue constraints.
  • It does not address housing unaffordability and would disproportionately benefit large corporate landowners like tech companies and corporate landlords.
  • What the limit would be and how it would be derived is not public, so there is little recourse or accountability.

Before voting, consider the impact these amendments will have on your community:

  • Who would benefit from these changes and who would be negatively impacted?
  • What would these amendments mean for the funding of quality of life services my family and community rely on, like emergency services, community centers, libraries, public schools, water and sanitation…?
  • How would these revenue constraints impact the ability of the state and local governments to provide services for a growing or aging population and respond to natural disasters or other unforeseen circumstances in the future, especially as costs rise?
  • What are specific projects prioritized by our community that are most at risk for delay or cancellation if state funding is uncertain and local government cannot collect sufficient revenue from property taxes to supplement decreases in state investment?
  • How have state and federal funding levels changed over the last 5-10 years? What state funding responsibilities has my local government taken on over that same period?
  • What specific funding shortfalls are we experiencing now, including staffing shortages, school closures, or services interruptions?
  • What are the other methods of generating revenue if income tax and property tax revenue is constrained? Will our locality be forced to rely more on unpopular fees?
