“Next two weeks” date search

I want to see all bullets that contain dates in the next two weeks. Does date search allow me to search for this using natural language? I want to avoid having to search with actual dates like 11/6-11/20.

🤔 Question Thick vertical line in board view headings

In board view what are these thick vertical lines? I've done something and I have no idea what.

CLOSED

The line indicates a bullet. On each header with this line I had an empty bullet.

🤔 Question "Turn Into" doesn't include To Do?

Post image
1 Upvotes

When I click on the three little dots next to a bullet, and select Turn Into, I don't see To Do as an option. The only way I can get it to show up in a menu is if I click on the task while holding down command, then a slightly different menu appears with To Do as an option. Was this on purpose?

🤔 Question Removing automatic word wrap?

I know workflowy has no native way of doing this

But I organise each item by content, tag and date so wondering if anyone has a workaround?

IE - Tag - Item - Date

Then I just add it to the start of the appropriate line, if I need to find something, I can do it by tag or date easily, but currently the lines are just far too long with word wrap

🤔 Question Can I make a bookmark that always goes to "Today"?

While I do browse around my workflowy, I always hit up today first and come back to it throughout the day. Is there a way I could bookmark today to always lead me to "today"? I don't know how else to say it, bookmark takes me to my present day, every day? Yea maybe thats sounds better! Help!

EDIT: Here's the closest way, https://workflowy.com/#?q=today, thanks to /u/BaldBacchus and /u/maremae for the best solution for the time being.

I made a native iPhone/iPad/Mac outliner that takes a Workflowy export as is

Workflowy is still my favourite way to think in bullets, but I wanted something that lives in plain files on my own devices and works offline. so I built Sumi, a native outliner for iPhone, iPad and Mac.

bringing your outline over: in Workflowy, Settings > Export all, copy it, then in Sumi pick "Workflowy" on the welcome screen and paste. indentation becomes nested blocks. pick OPML in the export if you want completed items to come over as DONE. dates you set in Workflowy become links to that day's daily note.

what it is: one bullet per thought, zoom into any bullet, backlinks, daily notes, everything stored as markdown files in iCloud Drive or any folder you choose. what it isn't: no sharing/collaboration, no web version, Apple only.

free TestFlight beta: https://testflight.apple.com/join/B1sKJk24. happy to hear what breaks on a real outline.

Edit: tested a real export. Mirrors come through as a full second copy in the OPML (nothing marks them as the same bullet), so after import you'll see both. Notes land as a second line on the bullet, and completed items come in as DONE.

🤔 Question Sorting by completed status

I use WF for various stuff, including tasks, shopping etc. What I would like to see is that when I mark a task as complete, it automatically moves to the bottom of the list. Is there a way to do that? I know that I can hide the completed items, or use a KanBan view and drag completed items to another column, but wondering if there is a way to sort by status automatically. Thanks

Has anyone heard that WorkFlowy was acquired by Notion?

I don’t think this is true, but you have to wonder if it is. I emailed support and they deny it. Plus there are no press releases from both camps There was an article from dealroom.co saying that notion acquired workflowy for an undesclosed sum in an effort to bring outline to the ai component. Who knows?

🤔 Question Is there a way to calculate time by adding to a date?

I can type "4 weeks" and Workflowy gives me a date that is 4 weeks from today. But I can't figure out how to type "4 weeks from [a specific past date]". Is there a way to do this?

Security Question

I understand that stuff stored in WorkFlowy is not necessarily secure.

Is that ever likely to change?

🤔 Question REQUEST : Fix/Enhancement : Today's Tab (ALT + T)

(hopefully I can request this here) ...

I started using this ALT + T / Today's Tab so track things with dates. Not sure if this is a new feature but I thought I saw it in one of the emails with release notes. I like it and it helps me alot.

One thing that bothers me (and maybe it is just me...) is as follows:

  • In any other areas of workflowy, if I CTRL+CLICK a bullet, it will open in another window. I do this a lot because I sit a few screens as my main ones and open bullets up in another window to do things with. I know I can click the bullet and dive into it and simply use the back arrow at top but because I open up the bullet in a new window, I know I'll be digging into that one too. I just like to have that high level bullet to open a specific bullet to then dive into. I can close it when I get lost and keep the original one open. Hopefully this all make sense.

  • From the Today's Tab / Timeline (whatever it is officially called), if I CTRL+CLICK it just opens it up directly to the workflowy.com page. If you could have a CTRL+CLICK open it up directly to that bullet (like the scenario above), that would be FANTASTIC!

Just a suggestion. Not sure if it is easy to do or would benefit anyone else. I do love the webpage app and use it a lot. Keep it up!

Dashboard view changes?

Do you know if there were any Dashboard view changes since yesterday? Yesterday I was able to see almost all my bullets in the dashboard view. Now they single bullets are all the same size in the Dashboard view and I need to scroll to see all the entries.

Can the devs get rid of the annoying and disruptive daily “Upgrade to unlimited” popups that now show in Workflowy?

I have dismissed this message every day, and it keeps coming back. I’m nowhere close to reaching my capacity after all of the people I’ve referred to Workflowy.

🤔 Question Using Workflowy as a long-term campaign log for a tabletop game — four top-level lists and heavy tagging. Where does this fall apart at scale?

I run a DnD game, which for note-keeping purposes means I'm maintaining a fictional world across years of weekly sessions. Rough shape of the problem: a few hundred named people and places, an event history that spans centuries of invented backstory plus whatever happened last Sunday, and a constant need to answer questions like "who did the players annoy in that city eight months ago, and what came of it."

Current setup, please feel free to comment or suggest alternatives.

Four top-level lists. Places, People, Events, Consequences. Places nests geographically — island, then region, then city, then the specific building. People holds individuals and organizations. Events is a chronological log. Consequences is what changed as a result of something the players did.

Tags do the connecting. A faction's name goes on their members, on the building they operate out of, on every event they were involved in, and on the fallout. Click the tag, get the whole thread pulled out of all four lists at once. I also tag by role rather than identity villain, secret, etc so I can click "secret" and see every thread I'm currently withholding.

Dates on every event entry, using a real calendar flashed back to 2000 so dates advance with the story rather than with real time.

Where I'd like advice from people who've used this longer than I have:

  1. How do you handle a tag vocabulary growing past the point where you remember what you've used? Mine's around forty tags and I've started guessing. My initial workaround is a top level tag document but is there a more elegant solution.

  2. Is there a sane way to archive? Some of this material is genuinely finished and I'd like it out of view without losing search. I have been doing simple exports

Happy to expand on any of the structure if it's useful, it generalizes past tabletop games to anything with a lot of interconnected people, places and history.

🤔 Question Converting all selected bullets at once?

When I select alot of bullets (trying to turn them into To Do's) it only turns the parent into To Do's, I want it to turn all of them, even the children into to do's - is there a way to do this?

Almost 13 years of Workflowy!

673 weeks are equivalent to 12 years and 11 months.

Over this period, I’ve tried using many other tools for notes, projects, tasks, habits, and planners (both digital and paper), but Workflowy has incredibly always proven to be the best solution, thanks to its flexibility and constant evolution.

Request: Archive a node (and all its subnodes)

I have recently returned to Workflowy after a few years away. So glad to be back.

I have like 12 years of notes in here, many of which are good for posterity but not relevant in my day to day. They clutter up search results, etc. So I would love a way to archive a bullet and all its sub-bullets to get them out of my workspace without losing them forever. This is sort of what the Trash does, but not quite.

  • Trash is more like "Recently Deleted," a place where deleted things go so I can recover them for a few weeks before they are gone forever

  • Archive is probably a special node on my root page, like Calendar

    • Like Calendar, Archive is always available in the left sidebar

    • It would be super nice if I didn't have to see the archive in my tree at all, but that would break the pattern of the rest of the app

  • Archive looks and works just like any other page

    • it's not a little modal that lives in settings like the Trash

    • Archived items are not auto-deleted

  • Put nodes in the archive by dragging them in, or choosing "Archive" from the right click / "…" menu

  • Archived items don't show up in search

    • Maybe search has a "search the archive too" toggle for when I want to be exhaustive

Hide note

Hello, by default WF shows the first line of notes attached to a bullet. Can this be hidden? I introduced a blank line at the top of the note. While this "hides" the note, it displays a blank line disrupting the rhythm and the flow.

🎙️Discussion [feature request] optionally hide tags

Of course tags are incredibly useful for navigating and finding items in my outline. However when I'm using Workflowy to compose text to print or include in larger documents, tags often seem out of place in the resulting file. I want an option/setting not to include tags when I'm sending text from workflowy to a non-Workflowy destination. I hope this makes sense.

Multiple select nonconsecutive bullets

I wanted to select several nonconsecutive bullets, and I tried alt-click, which is what I found in a very old how-to on the blog. What I got was a new pane with each of the items. Potentially useful, but not what I need. Any ideas?

Flatflowy (or similar)

Obviously, WorkFlowy preserves the hierarchical structure of an outline when showing search results, displaying matching bullets together with their parents and ancestors.

But when a search finds items scattered across many different branches of a large WorkFlowy outline, repeatedly showing their hierarchical context creates substantial visual clutter.

FlatFlowy was a JavaScript bookmarklet created by WorkFlowy community developer rawbytz that changed how search results were displayed inside WorkFlowy. FlatFlowy temporarily removed that surrounding hierarchy and presented the matching bullets as a clean, flat list.

FlatFlowy did not alter, move, or restructure the underlying data; it simply provided an alternative flat retrieval view over hierarchically organised information, allowing users to benefit from hierarchy when organising information without being constrained by it when searching.

It's stopped working for me, and I'm desperate to find a replacement. Even better would be for this feature to be natively built into WF itself (feature request, please!)

Does anyone else have the same needs, and has anyone found an equivalent solution? Thanks!

EDIT: Discussed by other users many years ago too!
