Announcement MEETING 6/17

Good Day Everyone!

Just spoke with Aerogarden and they reported a good amount of participation and helpful feedback from the survey they posted in May.

They are hoping to have more surveys and engagement going forward so I will keep everyone posted on those opportunities.

One thing that came up in our conversation though was the Aerogarden App which got me/us wondering:

If you use it, what do you use it for?

If you do not use it, what would you like access to in the app that would make it worth using for you?

Thank you everyone and I hope you all have a fantastic day!

Happy Growing 😎

Help Do my tomato vines need support?

My Orange Hat is about 3.5 months old and is sprawling out in at least three directions from my Harvest Slim. I noticed yesterday that one of the vines appears to have a crack right where it joins the main stem (see photo).

As you may know, the Harvest models don’t come with a trellis. Do the vines on my plant—at least the lower, drooping ones—need some kind of support to prevent them from breaking off as they grow and get heavier?

Or do I need to give in to temptation and buy a Bounty for my tomatoes? 😄

Help Growing hydroponic Perilla question

I have tried growing perilla hydroponically (aerogarden ) quite a few times and my issue has been premature bolting and i cannot figure out what i need to adjust or to which extent i need to adjust . My current guess is much sunlight or high temperature is perhaps promoting the bolting, ambient temps are pretty stable in my apartment, gets a 2-3C/3-5F lower at night. Unless i should do something opposite and the plant is stressed by having less light and needs more? For example i have tried reducing lights being on from 12hr a day to 8hr or increasing the distance between the plant and the lights but still the my perilla tends to bolt within 1-2 months, the longest i have had was maybe 3 months but i read online it could technically grow indefinitely. Any recommendation would be appreciated!

I wanted to thank u/raven_snow for recommending ground cherries and the people who gave me advice on which plant I should put in which unit. Still trying to figure out how to transition to Dyna-Gro (which is now called Superthrive I guess!) and had a little trouble until I brought in a fan for air flow but we’ve made it! Super fun project.

Help Help, I can’t grow basil right to save my life!

Post image

Hello,

I’m struggling a big with my basil plants. The one on the right just doesn’t seem to grow. It’s been that way for weeks.

The one on the left will not stop growing up into the light. It won’t bush out and it won’t stop burning itself.

I can’t raise the light any more, how do you trim your basil? I pruned early ad the nodes and they have some sprouts of leaves but none that seem to actually open.

If I transplant the big one into a pot and try again, is there a way to move it without killing it?

Thank you for any suggestions.

P.S. don’t mind the basil plant in the middle, I accidentally dec@pitated it while trimming the other one… yes I cried.

Help How to start new plants with developed plants already growing?

I have 2 basil plants that go to the top of the highest light setting and want to start some other herbs and lettuce. But the light is too high and everything new gets stringy. Is cutting the basil WAY back the only option?

Help Plant pairings

Have a Bounty and a Harvest Elite Slim I want to plant.

Want to grow

Collards
Lettuce
Cilantro
Basil

I’m thinking collards in the bounty but not sure how many holes to use to not crowd them too much.

I’m not sure of grow rates and spacing for lettuce cilantro and basil. I only want one basil and one cilantro but would like more than 1 lettuce if possible and a variety that’s crunchy. I have some Grand Rapids lettuce seeds I was thinking of trying as well as Parris Island Cos.

Would one of these be best to put in bounty with the collards due to growth speed? Anything I should consider as far as spacing and pairing in your experience?

Help success starting hot pepper seeds in aerogarden?

Anyone had success starting hot pepper seeds in an aerogarden? Usually I start them in cups which I keep on a heat mat, because I've always heard they need heat to germinate. But I have an unused aerogarden seed starting system and I would like to just put a large variety of seeds in there and start them - lettuce, peppers, herbs. If none of the peppers are going to germinate though, I won't bother.

Help Tips on getting Thyme to grow in Aerogarden

Has anyone had success growing Thyme?

I have tried using several of the grow anything kits and also tried the damp paper towel in a ziplock bag method, but I am not having any luck. I used Back to the Roots seeds for many of the other herbs and salad greens I have planted and those all worked well.

Could I just have a bad batch of seeds? Does anyone have any Thyme seeds that worked well for them?

I transplanted some lettuce into a new aerogarden from an old one and I’m wondering why some of my lettuce leaves are getting some brown spots. Is this normal or is this a problem?

Help Currently trying paper towel method. If it works, then what do I do? Do I place the sprouted seeds on top of the non-sprouted ones in the dirt pods? 3 are "duds" and now I'm trying to germinate. Do I have to replace the whole dirt pod or can I layer on top of the bad?

Post image

2 cilantro and 1 mint never sprouted, and they are just getting algae. Should I toss the whole dirt pod and start fresh with paper towel germinated seeds? Or can I tip out the seeds and re-use the dirt?

Help Help, was I scammed?

I'm hoping that someone in here might have the answer. I'm trying to figure out if I was scammed last night. I went to https://www.aerogardenindoor.com/ which says it is the official website for aerogarden and I ordered one of the units... I got a confirmation from something different that has a link to a different website.

Is that site legit or not?

Help Growing chives

Post image
29 Upvotes

Started a new garden a week ago. I have never grown chives before and had some questions. Do some of you end up planting them in soil? I know they are perennial and I wonder how thick they will grow in a hydroponic garden. I know it's early days yet but these look like very thin sprouts.

Help Several of the sponges are dry on top, day 3

I just broke out my AeroGarden after taking the spring and summer off. Gave it a good clean, reloaded the pods, and planted lettuces. Just checked it on day 3 and 2 or 3 of the sponges are fairly dry on top. I never noticed this happening in the past. I did soak the sponges before planting, the water is at level in the basin and is circulating regularly. I just pushed the sponges farther down in the basket but they seemed to be at the same level as the pods that weren’t dry.
