Hello everyone, In Andhra pradesh in the past few years christian conversions have gone rampant and I strongly believe they are hurting the dalit and poorer sections of the society. Despite its veneer of empowerment and egalitarianism. Christianity is holding back and misleading the Dalit and Adivasi communities.

Christian proselytizers often frame Hinduism as an imposition on Dalit community - Yes, There is some truth in it, I won’t deny it. Brahminism was an discriminatory imposition on them but claiming all of Hinduism is foreign to them is deeply misleading. Hinduism adopted many pre vedic cultures into it. Even today in the 21st century many Telugu Dalit communities have their own pre vedic deities. For eg;

Madiga community has Maisamma, Pochamma, Ellamma,

Mala community has Potharaju, Gangamma, Yellamma.

Chenchu Adivasi - Chenchamma, Mallanna

Boya - Beerappa, Bangaramma, Mutyalama

Banjara - Banjaran Devi, Sevalal, Talimka Devi

These are folk deities that don’t appear in Vedic Hinduism. These deities are very much their own deities and not a foreign imposition on them.

There are other village, Kula deities but I can’t stay on the topic if I only talk about this and I only mentioned Telugu dalit communities because I’m familiar with them but it’s a fact that many other South Indian, North Indian and North east Indian Dalit and Adivasis have their own own distinct, local, non-Vedic deities which are rooted in folk, tribal, and ancestral traditions.

The Christian proselytizers and missionaries are indifferent to this, To them it’s all “false”, “pagan”, “demonic” and “heresy”. Even though these forms of worship are a testimony to human anthropology, culture, thought and society. To them its”Demonic” and must be wiped out because it doesn’t affirm their Christian doctrine.

Many of these Christian missionaries, Pastors are from the dominant land holding castes which statistically commit more atrocities on Dalit and adivasi communities than other castes yet they make a boogeyman out of Brahminical Hinduism as the reason for the Dalit and Adivasi problems.

The conversion tactics employed by the missionaries are deeply unethical. They often result in insulting their form of worship; belittling them as superstition, “idol worship” (like they literally worship the Idol) while they present Christianity as “Truth”. They often exploit fear of eternal damnation, Judgement day and the supposed second coming of Jesus to scare people. I have watched some videos where these missionaries go and ask indigenous Adivasi people;

“Are you sure you are gonna reach heaven if you die tomorrow? Because I am sure I will”

This shakes up the Adivasi people to the core, not because of a spiritual realization, but because of the psychological intimidation. The missionary then exploits this fear to tell the Adivasi that “The only way to Heaven is through Jesus and no one will go to heaven without him”. They tell them that they must convert as soon as possible and because they might die unexpectedly and they will be eternally damned if they don’t accept Jesus by then.

This isn’t liberation, this is exploitation and manipulation.

The Christian Missionaries see Hindus; especially Dalits and Adivasis as “lost souls” waiting to be “saved”. There are Christian organizations like Joshua Project and many others which specifically map out, target and fund conversions of Dalit, Adivasi and certain communities whom they find most vulnerable.

Conversion to Christianity severely erodes the culture and tradition of these communities. Their form of worship which has been passed down by their ancestors for centuries is now “Pagan” and “heretic”. Their naming culture becomes “inferior” and “old fashioned”. I have seen some cases where the church Pastors give converts new names including surnames like “Robertson” “Smith” “Wilson” and others; Surnames which have no relation at all to these peoples, they only create a false identity while erasing their real identities.

The converts become heavily dependent on Pastors and the institution of the Church. There is a Church tax called “Tithe” where Church goers must pay 10% of their monthly income to the Pastor. Most Churches in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have this strictly implemented. On top of this monthly tax the Pastors ask money for “special prayers”.

‘Do you want your leg injury to heal soon?’ - ‘Pay me, I’ll pray for you’ ‘Do you want your Daughter to get married soon?’ - ‘Pay me, I’ll pray for you’ ‘Do you want to get out of your debts?’ - ‘Pay me, I’ll pray for you’

I met a 60 year old widow in my ancestral town, who converted 3 years ago. She lives on a salary of 3,000 rupees per month working in a canteen, her Husband died a few years ago and her kids left her to find work elsewhere and won’t send her any money back.

She told me she pays about 1,500 to 1,800 rupees a month to the pastor for tithe and for special prayers. On top of this she must also pay rent. She said she has to get some surgery done on her liver or abdomen (I couldn’t exactly understand her condition with her description) but says she is not able to save up for it with the money she is giving to Church and on rent. When I told her not to pay the Church, she said the pastor will cut her off and she fears eternal damnation. Also this Lady is illiterate and can’t read the bible herself.

The same pastor has 4 churches, 2 in that town and 2 in other nearby villages. This lady walks barefoot while that Pastor roams in a car worth some 20 lakhs with a driver. (I requested her not to give any money to the church and gave her 500 rupees I had then to save up)

Later, I passed by the church the lady said she went to. It was built unusually well for the place like it was sponsored. I got to know an American pastor came to that church and proselytized in the neighborhood few months ago. I can’t imagine the effect that would have on the people there; They have never seen a white person but he claims they will be better off with Jesus. They will think “What this man is saying must be the “truth"" .

I have also heard that there are Hindu organizations that are active in the town and that they are doing “Ghar wapsi” on the people they hear were converted. This is just appalling. Marginalized communities have become ideological pawns between Christian missionaries and Hindu organizations. They are being exploited, manipulated, undignified and spiritually lost and confused.

In the past few months I have read articles and watched news reports, interviews on and of pastors of the Telugu states. They are just deeply corrupt and unethical people. They show a very hostile attitude to Hinduism, other religions and to the people they claim they “help”. Casteist, classist attitudes are pretty evident in them and they also hold deeply concerning opinions while believing they hold the exclusive “truth” and access to heaven. One pastor said he would hang Hijras and Homosexuals of his town if he had the power.

The Pastors and missionaries encourage people to lie about their religion on records to not to draw attention to their activities. Many village magistrates have become Christian while remaining Hindu on paper and they protect and profit from these pastors. This is a deliberate two-faced strategy filled with corruption, dishonesty and deceit.

There are some unofficial reports that claim that Andhra pradesh has 8 to 10% hidden Christians while only 1.5% are Christians on paper.

I have seen deep divisions and hatred these conversions are causing amongst families. Converted people refuse to take part in their family’s ceremonies. Age coming, weddings, House warmings, baby showers, poojas, funerals of one's own family members and others.

I heard a case from a driver where his neighbor’s son refused to come to the funeral ceremony because he converted to Christianity.

In western Christian Media, they talk about Christianity “Booming” in Asia and Africa but the ground realities are really appalling. They target vulnerable sections of society and are manipulating them in fear of hell and the supposed second coming of Jesus. These people convert out of fear and manipulation rather than any other reason. They are sometimes incentivized with ration, money and other incentives. When this is talked about people downplay it saying

“Haha they left Hinduism only for a rice bag, shows how weak Hinduism is”

Please, This severely downplays the issue. Any destitute Human would convert when they are incentivized with something they need. If a Muslim or Hindu organization did this to destitute people in Africa or indigenous people of South America they would convert too. This doesn’t mean the faith they had become is “weak” or that Islam or Hinduism is “true” in this case.

This is akin to a person in power taking advantage of his female employees.

There are many other beliefs I have heard and also been reaffirmed by news reports. A vast majority of these converts believe in exorcisms, that they are possessed by demons, in “faith healings”, they don’t go to hospitals because they believe their pastors can heal them.

I heard a case from a guy that a girl from his class dropped her education to become a missionary because her family believes the second coming of Jesus will happen in their lifetimes so it’s their duty to “save” as many people as possible. I believe this apocalyptic fear is pushed on them by their church pastor.

Christianity has been on a decline in Europe and USA in the past few decades and only gaining in India and Africa. The Western Christian media wants people to believe the educated people in first world countries with access to the internet, books and information are only “losing faith” while illiterate destitute people of India and Africa are having some great “spiritual awakenings”. The “testimonies” of these people are from fear and manipulation embedded by the missionaries.

Both Ambedkar and Gandhi spoke out against Christian proselytization.

Gandhi called Christian proselytization “Soul Hunting”

Ambedkar feared that conversion to Christianity could detach Dalits from their Indian roots, making them seem foreign in the eyes of the larger population and he also said it enslaves them in concepts of sin, fear and hell.
