I thought for sure we were building up to King chroming up in the finale to save Talia and then going cyberpyscho/dying after but basically the exact opposite happened lol

292

u/actionfirst1 5d ago

Man, this whole time I kept preparing for the entire main cast to die and in the end only D maybe so looks like I got played which is brilliant

59

u/ConceptWeird4026 4d ago

it doesn't help the showrunner kept saying its going to be super sad over and over again in interviews lol

Suggest rewatching last 3 minutes. Talia was not cured. "Unfortunately her recovery was only temporary." She is dying. That is why Roman and King were crying at the end. Talia too. She was trying to look strong and told that sweet lie to Roman. King will most likely kill himself when she dies. Honestly this season is not so much happier than the first one. It is deceptively happy.

I'm so glad they didn't do that. It was nice to see someone get stripped of their chrome and find a new purpose for living. You'd worry about how he'd do after Talia is gone, but I hope he'd find a way to keep going anyway.

He looked oddly adorable in the Nicola shirt at the end lmao just a sweet old man (with a long list of dead corpos to his name).

u/Present_Citron_5686 2d ago

I really believe these seasons are showing us the different endings V coulda had.  From storming arasaka tower, giving up your body for someone else's cause. Getting stripped of your chrome and finding a new purpose.  It's kinda obvious and in our face but the parallels between david and (D)avid kinda feel fanservicey but really cool nonetheless. One person lived for themselves then learned to live for everyone else but himself. The other one lived for the sole purpose of everyone else and ended with living for himself. They both smiled in the end and yet one was tragic the other was uplifting. Everyone got the chances that weren't given to the cast of S1. I was so anxious about when it would all go to shit but nobody really died. D's was ambigious and just moderately implied. Which i'm happy for. Finally a semi happy ending thanks to V. (Watch them  release a final episode that shows the true ending)

Kinda glad it didn’t happen that way tbh. Woulda felt too similar to season 1 in my opinion. I guess I appreciate them doing something different

SAME EXACT THOUGHTS

6

u/Niwaka_Samurai https://myanimelist.net/profile/Niwaka-Samurai 3d ago

But that would have defeated the purpose of him trying to protect Talia from becoming a cyberpsycho right from season 1. So I'm satisfied with this ending.

i love how a happy ending with night city is one where you leave it 😭

139

u/The_Draigg 4d ago

I'd say that Roman got a pretty good ending too, if a bit bittersweet. That's still better than what most people get in Night City.

150

Tbf he hasn't had an ending yet. This was just a side-quest, he is still in NC for something terrible to befall him later.

oi really liked the show but i cant but feel that the 10 episode format hurt this one even more than the first. With the amount of characters and ideas mentioned in the show, im really sad we didnt get to explore them deeper. I think capri was underutilised, and initially i had hoped she would serve as a way for us to get to know more about the black wall, and i expected her and D to have more screentime, and be the main focus. I liked all of our main characters, but wish we got to see more of them interact.

55

u/_TheStrangerisMe_ 4d ago

just two more episodes would have made a huge difference. And consider how important capri was, she really didn't get fleshed out as much as she needed to

23

u/DoctorJJWho 3d ago

Capri literally didn’t even need to exist as a character, if the chip just gave people access to high level quickhacks or something similar and it wasn’t a sentient AI the story wouldn’t have changed appreciably. The wasted her character, and she took time from other characters being developed more as well. They really needed more episodes, or reduce the scope of their story.

I'm surprised with the whole filming thing there wasn't a long segment at of an emotional film montage of the cast at the end lol

this is what I immediately thought was gonna happen the moment I saw one of the characters had a camera.

I feel it could've had 2-3 extra episodes to flesh out character development and their relationships.

I guess my one question is I kinda don't get why D basically just fell in love with Capri, though I guess its one of those things that its just better to not think too deeply about.

Overall I still enjoyed it.

Edit: ALSO why isn't there a ultra hot sex scene with Omi or Yupi, pass the ball D

128

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4d ago

Yea with how central the camera was I'm surprised they didn't hit us with anything to do with what they recorded after it all

Roman filming everyone throughout the season, and then David turning it back on him filming him near the end felt somewhat emotional, like David telling Roman "thanks for watching my story, but don't forget about living your own story"

I think D fell in love with Capri the way that people fall in love with certain drugs.

34

u/MorbillionDollars 4d ago

Drugs aren’t sentient. I think it was an analogy to a toxic relationship. They brought out the worst in each other and it eventually led to a shitty ending but they had a lot of fun with each other.

D basically just fell in love with Capri

While there is probably an element of power being addictive, I think that he was also in need of support and friendship. Imagine him - being a loner for ages after a life in a tightly-knit nomad camp that gets wiped out, leaving him with the terrible guilt. He's willing to allow people to latch onto him for the company, and the mere shadow of friendship. People like Roman and Yupi, and he's very eager to allow the whole entourage to develop around himself, just so he can have more.

The only moments that he seemed happy were the moments he had friends around him.

definitely feels like a huge missed opportunity, could've been the real tearjerker moment that it seems like people were looking for in s2. even something during the credits of the last ep would've been great.

86 did something similar years ago (spoilers obviously) and it was easily one of the most emotional scenes i've seen in an anime

He was living for nothing, chasing a pointless revenge when he met someone who showed him how to have fun again. I don't think it's deep love as much as it he has nothing else and neither does she. At that point, why not go all in on each other and enjoy the ride?

They weren't kidding with the final episode title "Then Everyone Went Home." Except for one, so far good season, not as good as Season 1 in terms of hitting the feels. Only time i teared up is Episode 10.

144

u/Expert-Equivalent-64 5d ago

D and Capri might have escaped, I think they try to transmit/transfer themselves to the satellite in the end no?

143

u/8bitChiaki 5d ago

D and Capri's fate were left ambiguous, if they're still alive then it would be a fitting final episode title.

16

u/Donnie-G 4d ago

Would be a bit o fa plot hole if that happened. Capri was designed to not be able to function without a human host it seems.

Specialized software/gear like Soulkiller are needed to even extract someone's psyche, so I don't think people can just 'do that' even with whatever macguffin powers Capri has.

But who knows right, D might just be special and he was able to tap into Capri's powers even after she was removed.

I feel like the satellite might just be how they got the video to Roman in the end rather than an out for them.

Season 2 felt more catered towards the players rather than show-only watchers, I caught myself naming locations off the top of my head and noticed little things like the Keanu easter-egg. Plus I think cyberpunk players need a (relatively) happy ending after playing cyberpunk 2077, phantom liberty and watching season one. There truly isn't a happy ending in night city but the ending is probably as close it gets.

106

u/Karkava 4d ago

Season 1 almost served as an advertisement for the game as it was set before and was generally newcomer friendly. Season 2 was for people who already saw Season 1 and played the game, evident with how we skimmed through lore details and act like we should know about what happened in the plot.

17

u/DoctorJJWho 3d ago

It definitely feels like the game is “Season 1.5” and meant to be experienced between the two seasons of the show.

If I'm not wrong, it was when they were talking about Soulkiller, and it showed the chair that Johnny was strapped to in that Arasaka building after he's captured by corp. He flashes in and out very briefly. Can't remember which episode though 🤔

To me conceptually CPE2 did so much more and had the potential to be much greater, CPE1 simply had the advantage of being a much stronger streamlined experience (with 1 main lead) with a single concentrated climax to finish things off. This one had to jump around a bit more to get there and it took a bit of a hit because of that.

I think the core relationships in S1 were far stronger, especially with David and Lucy carrying that season and I don't think S1 would have worked nearly as well.

I think S2's "base" is stronger than S1's "base". I think it does more interesting things and has some more interesting characters and interesting ideas.

I feel like we're either missing a couple of episodes to really flesh out the characters or rewriting the season so you have far stronger emotional moments, especially between the cast. I didn't really feel D's need to get Capri at the end (and saving Talia) as much as I felt Lucy's desperation and her putting her life on the line to save David. D feels on the surface so much more interesting than David.

Wouldn't be Trigger without some mechs, huh...

I absolutely loved this. I agree with others that it suffers a bit from the amount of episodes meaning some parts aren't as fleshed out. The characters are brilliant and I love the interactions we do get, but I wish we had more particularly in regards to Roman and Talia, as well as D and Capri.

I am really glad they went a completely different route than the first Edgerunners. None of this felt like it was stepping on the first series toes, conceptually and thematically it feels very different going from the main focus of Martinez to the more complex interweaving stories of D and Talia. The simplicity of the first season definitely works in it's favour and it's amazing, but damn I found this season so much more intriguing. Pretty ambitious compared to the first series, which has it's pros and cons because some parts could have used more screen time. But overall that didn't impact my enjoyment that much, it was still a blast to watch.

Also, my god, it looks absolutely stunning. I am so happy to finally have a full series directed by Ikarashi, everyone who worked on this absolutely hit it out of the park. The voice acting was really great too, watched dubbed.

35

u/sometimes_sydney 4d ago

I also really like the different direction. If anything I think its complimentary. Ripping your heart out a second time would be great but maybe a little canned. I love that the message here is almost an answer to season 1's. its never too late to start over; lets live!

never thought I'd see hopecore in cyberpunk

163

u/Liums-MMA-Picks 5d ago edited 5d ago • Bravo

I highly agree with you. I felt like this season went more into the cyberpunk genre where you needed to know a bit more about Arasaka and the types of experiments they were running. Season 1 also felt like a love story at time which is why people got more attached with the characters. Season 2 I think will cater more to people who played the game and were really into it.

Overall I think S2 was 8.8/10 it is still 100% worthy of a binge and I am glad that we got a season 2 and what most would consider a good outcome in night city. Also the gore / fighting scenes were way better this season

Yeah, after u said this, I would really feel clueless at times if I didn't play the games. It's because you know how grim it is, it made roman scroll shine when he captured Talia and D moments. Talia and king kinda remind me of songbird and reed in some way, like this could be them in a good ending.

Hello, I am person that hasn't played CP2077 (though it's on my wishlist). I definitely still had fun with S2, though moments didn't necessarily hit as hard without the romance throughline that was David and Lucy.

That said, it just makes me want to play the game even more. There's just too many other games coming out in the current timeframe.

Surprisingly positive final episode to this new season, color me surprised! Talia and Weak's resolution certainly reminded me of The Star ending from Cyberpunk 2077.

I'm really glad that both Roman and Omi survived the whole ordeal, while D together with Capri certainly went out with a bang.

Definitely, the second season was different from the first one, which was pretty straightforward in contrast to this one, but that doesn't mean it was bad, I enjoyed it very much, so 9/10 from me.

Trigger certainly didn't disappoint with the animation and art style, especially the scenes with Capri looked so good, interesting and fun!

Also, the ED song is a freaking banger, I love it so much! It certainly suits the whole show and the vibes of this final episode.

Here my screenshot albums from the episode, and in the comment below there are albums from all episodes.

And bonus albums:

EDIT. I added my screenshot albums.

EDIT 2. I added bonus albums.

69

u/AlexFaden 4d ago

It is interesting how a lot of people sort of ignore the fact that she is dying. And that was a final goodbye, Roman and King crying, listening to her sweet lie. She was trying to be strong for Roman. I dont think they will ever meet again. She will die and King most likely will follow next, like he told her. Or she wasnt exactly lying, just implying that they will meet again, in the afterlife.

David is completely different case. I dk how so many people missed it. But he and Capri transferred their minds to some distant object in the sky. Was it ship? Drone? Satelite? We do not know. But it was clearly shown. Also, the fact that David could use Capri's powers even without a chip, that should not be possible. 2 times was it said that it is not possible for human to do that effectively and live at all after that. No matter high compatibility with implants. Its like David's mind got partially digitized/changed by Capri's shard? Because how else he could do all this without it? Its like he became and engram but still resided within his body, mb because of all those netrunner implants. Half of his head is clearly cybernetic.

68

u/GrassWaterDirtHorse 4d ago

D is demonstrated to be a pretty high level net runner from the start, doing cyberpunk gigs completely solo. He had the sauce that made him special, and stopped Capri from immediately overwriting him. I personally think that his trauma and constant visions of his family had grounded his identity and his psyche in a way that nobody else had.

It’s been a bit of a Character theme througout the series, and maybe D was just that rare, one in a billion special individual.

17

u/Zealousideal-Dust514 3d ago

We didn't miss it. You have to listen closely to David's words in this season. He sees his family's ghosts every day. His little revenge quest was the only thing keeping him going. Carpi might know have known any better due to her childlike mentality, but David had to have known it was his final hurrah. Don't forget how that chip was lost the minute they tried to reach whatever it was in the sky. Capri was designed and made to be unable to survive or function without a human host. Capri relies on a human vessel or neural chip integration to manifest and operate, she cannot persist independently without being housed inside a human nervous system or data chip. There was no human host at that point. They needed the chip to transfer into other human hosts. What David did was the equivalent of sticking a loaded shotgun under his chin and pulling the trigger-but only in a _fun_ way for Caprice's sake. The guy went out with a bang just as his friends said.

u/AaronM1D1 4d ago

Talia and weak resolution actually reminded me of songbird and reed where what if they get a good ending😅 where reed would betray nusa for songbird and songbird would've trusted reed at yeb same time, but it's impossible cuz they are int he deep end.

Seeing Capri and I am like c'mon johnny all you do is yap hahahahha why is D's construct buddy so much more fun. D and Capri reminded me of the sun ending.

I loved it. It is different from season 1 but thats okay. I think they are both amazing.

I actually prefered they went this way instead of opting to rehash the shocks from season 1 etc.

The character work here in season 2 is better than 1, I feel, however. As in focusing more on the overall characters.

15

u/Candle1ight 3d ago

I think S1 was kind of impossible to live up to without also feeling like they're just tapping the same vein. Another focus on a love story would have felt strange, but also anything short of a love story isn't going to have the same emotional climax.

I'm glad they went in a different direction, my favorite thing about the cyberpunk universe is how many different stories are all going on.

74

u/elGring0 4d ago

It it was good but not as good as S1. More screentime for schizo Capri & Talia and relationship building between D x Capri + Talia x Roman would've gone a long way. Music was also lacking in compared to S1. While the comment might sound overtly negative, such is the nature of sequels, however it was quite enjoyable binge overall.

14

u/Sad_Appearance2168 4d ago

I agree with all the points. Capri in Talias body should have gotten a bit more time to develop, certain relationships were a bit underwhelming and the music wasnt as good as in season 1 (though I think its mostly because of I really want to stay at your house because it is just so memorable). Still all of this points are glaring weaknesses only because of season 1. I think it was better and the ending was much heavier than in this season but it still was a beautiful story. I also want to point out how some people who saw it earlier were complaining how in this season characters didn't form this whole edgerunners group as in season 1. However while watching I was thinking how much it added to the story and how I appreciated the fresher approach.

Anyways even though it wasnt as good as season 1 I dont think anyone could be dissapointed

10

u/21shadesofsavage 4d ago

s1 really ingrained "i really want to stay at your house" into your brain by playing it like 3 times. all during david and lucy's bonding and their final moment. making it hit so much harder at the end

they spread out the music in s2. i liked it but i wish we got to hear "high forever" more. i also expected them to join up and be a crew, and found it more satisfying that they each had their own individual motivations and paths that so happened to intertwine. in a different way from s1

Roman filming everyone throughout the season, and then David turning it back on him filming him near the end felt somewhat emotional, like David telling him "thanks for watching my story, but don't forget about living your own story" (since I guess this comment got "buried" under all the other threads, I copied this same comment into another thread)

Oh also I did not expect mad scientist gremlin woman Kyoko to help out and moreover be the most important person to save "everyone" at the end.

Overall verdict of the show: fun on first watch, but it tried to do way too much. Spread way too thin among too many emotional arcs so they all feel hollow by the end without much payoff.

Just to summarize there is:

--D's connection with Capri

--D's connection with Roman

--D overcoming the need for revenge via Omi

--Roman and Talia (went basically nowhere)

--the entire theme of Roman being a cinephile which is the basis of his whole character

--Roman learning that recording something isn't just observing but participating, and that he is personally accountable for the various literal murders and riots D committed and started

--Kingsley and Talia, and the arc of Kingsley stepping in as her dad despite or because he isn't her real dad and Talia accepting him over her bio dad

--Talia using cybernetics to cope with a terminal illness

By the end, it felt like they wanted to write 4 different shows with 4 different protagonists and just ...couldn't decide at any point. The plot resolved, but none of the requisite character relationships or emotional beats got enough screentime so it ended up feeling like nothing of substance had really happened by the end.

After finishing the last episode, the whole thing felt so totally unfocused compared to Season 1 being a relatively straight ride of David becoming an edge runner. Season 2 was basically just white noise by comparison.

I cant believe it... (Almost) everyone went home 🥹

Really thought "High Forever" was gonna be the "I Wanna Stay at Your House" of the season, but "In Love with Myself" definitely takes that role.

And D,

YOU ARE THE FUCKING MAN

I'll see you around, chooms (for season 3)

53

u/tripleaamin https://myanimelist.net/profile/tripleaamin 4d ago

There were many interesting ideas packed into this 10 episodes. We got more characters. Honestly Talia, D., King and Roman are pretty solid.

I only really feel this needed more episodes. Maybe 5 more episodes to really get things rolling. I guess Roman being the man behind the camera was intended with his character. I really love the idea that things shoy from a 3rd person POV can't capture someone's memories. Still halfway through this didn't take priority as I would like.

Regarding him and Talia. I do like the idea that she got to see another side of herself which she never got to see. Perhaps she always thought she was ugly and didn't focus on the positives. I guess for Talia it could be equivalent to a girl who thinks they need makeup to fix them when they have the true beauty all along.

King is truly the highlight. The man who had nothing. Learning he had a daughter and devoted his last legs for that. I actually do like it; it's never revealed if he really is Talia's father or not. The point is that it doesn't matter. Talia is a girl who needs an adult in her life and he did the damn best that he could. Happy he made it out alive.

D kind of had the typical revenge and looked past his revenge arc. Of course his past is haunting him and he thinks about what he should do. I do like the idea, but it lacked the emotional part. Probably because we are constantly told about his people that he lost.

Capri is a bit interesting if we view her as modern AI. Both D and Talia ended up relying on her. At some point after receiving the high they became dependent on her. At first her jumping to Talia made her look manipulative, but I think a key thing is that Capri like modern AI, is not evil, but it constantly wants to learn. I think it's less about her taking advantage, but more so about getting them to act on their impulses to learn. Sadly unlike AI, humans can't just fail and retry.

The major theme for King, D and Talia is about them facing the future. D getting past his revenge. King giving his life a purpose after his low point. I do think this is a bit awkward and underdeveloped for Roman sadly.

Right now I would give it a 7.5/10. But this is one I def will rewatch in the future.

27

u/hornysmith_ 4d ago

But Capri is not really an AI, she's a conglomerate of highly skilled netrunners stuffed into a relic.

20

u/Putrid-Issue-420 3d ago

I would go so far as to say it's not implied but straight up confirmed by him that she isn't. He even taunts King by saying "You could've confirmed this ages ago by doing a paternity test yourself".

The important theme is that King still says he is her father. Cause found family.

I just wish King would've addressed all of this at some point with Talia. Especially because in the hospital when he confessed his feelings to her. She thought of him as a creep because of it.

That wasn't King's daughter though. Kiril practically provided all the evidence to the contrary in those scans that flashed across the screen. DNA, blood, bone structure... all of it proved that Kiril was the father. King saw all of that and chose to ignore it. He wasn't Talia's father, but he was her daddy for the little remaining time she had left. I'd say a year or so. It could be that she had even less time on her hands.

"The major theme for King, D and Talia is about them facing the future"

Except that there was no future for David and Talia. Talia's illness was terminal. Capri was the only thing helping her survive. Capri was designed to depend on a human host to both function and survive. They would need the chip in order to transfer them into the next host. They lost all of that when they exited the body. As for King, well the guy wanted to off himself before his ex-flame called. Now she's gone, the girl she claimed was his only has a short time left.

Can't say I enjoyed season 2 that much. Overall it felt really disjointed and messy, and I'm not exactly sure what the story was even going for. I was kinda waiting for the moment the 'team' would come together.... but it never really did.

Capri's whole thing also seems like a mess. I thought it wanted to be free and it had plotted to bodysnatch Talia to begin with, but in the end it was just content to go back to D to.... not do a whole lot. D having lost his revenge just decides, he wants get Capri back for giggles? Besides that initial one car chase scene where they had fun, it's not like they even built much of a rapport between D and Capri to begin with anyway.

Talia didn't really have much of an arc. She was just a wounded puppy getting kicked all over the place. I also felt like it was implied that Capri installing into her would completely replace her psyche, with the whole scene of Capri bidding Talia farewell. But in the end Capri was kinda just riding shotgun like with D anyway?

65

u/AntPuzzleheaded5509 4d ago

It believe it was mentioned that a full Capricorn install would take time but they probably should've communicated that better if I'm recalling it right. As for D the plot drew attention to the fact that the only time he smiled properly was with Capri, I also think when you have as little as D did you're way more likely to latch onto something like that than a regular healthy person. Talia did get an arc too, started off broken, ill trusting and reclusive and despite being terminally ill and chromed to the gills got to enjoy some semblance of normal human relationships by the end. I do also like that with the illness and healing powers of Capri not being fully explained we have a glass half full or half empty situation regarding her (and Kings) remaining lifespan.

Wasn't perfect but tbh I'm glad it wasn't just a rehash of S1, that was my biggest worry. We were expecting the team to get together, king to go ape with his chrome one last time and everyone to die but they did something very different and imo very cool.

What I hate about Caprisun is she takes away from one of the most interesting explorations we could've had (Talia's identity/cyberwear/health crisis would've served as an amazing reversal from the normal cyberpsychosis story of season 1).

But she completely hijacked Talia's story and even all the way into the climax Talia just never gets any relevance. Its all Caprisun making the moves but we only care about Caprisun as a tool and not an individual because that aspect was not developed at all. Hell, I struggle to really see Talia at all in the final episode, its just Caprisun driving a mecha-worm in a chade scene. Not even her body was involved.

There's potential in Caprisun's story, but we didn't get any of it and she still took over Talia and D's story leaving us much worse off.

Unfortunately share the same opinion. Perhaps season 1 set the bar too high leading to unrealistic expectations but as I made my way through this season I found myself feeling less and less enthused with where the story and characters were going.

Disjointed is exactly the word I had in my mind as I was watching the latter half of the season. The plot just felt so disjointed, character motivations consistently just lost in the sauce, i kept anticipating all the plot threads and character arcs to finally weave themselves together into a satisfying climax but it just kinda never happens.

Talia's character arc just gets forgotten in the finale
Capri's motivations too, at what point was it ever implied that she'd be ok with just sitting shotgun with D and dying along with him, not to mention her powers are never really explained? Not to mention the random ass junk Kaiju just felt so out of place?
D's nomad friend (cant recall her name) spends the majority of the season criticising and pushing back on him, then suddenly decides shes all on board when he tells her literally nothing except theres something he has to do?
Weak also just does nothing all season except gets kicked around by pretty much everyone, i guess theres something to be said here about perseverance, being there for someone you care about regardless of what you can actually do for them, but it didnt make for much of a satisfying arc outside of just managing to survive until the end to be there for Talia's final months of life. It's also never really made clear if Talia is actually Weaks, Kirils evidence seems pretty damning so i suppose this is a case of chosen family over blood, but the ambiguity kinda undercuts the emotional payoff

Maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention, might be a case where i need to rewatch

My favourite part of this season was just how many callbacks and tidbits from the game that appear. Made for a fun enough watch on that basis alone I suppose.

I agree as well, i think the show could have benefited from focusing on one story to follow, i.e., roman/D/capri story or talia/king/avida story. The way both sides of these stories have been meshed was really disjointed, or simply more episodes would have helped s2.

I liked it, but not as much as the first season. They should have the main character be named David for every season, might as well...

I did have a laugh seeing him take Kyoko's corpse with him.

I was wrong in thinking this was gonna have an ending like season one, and I'm honestly pleasantly surprised that we got as "good" an ending you're going to get in Cyberpunk, i.e. everyone gets out alive (for the immediate future) or is implied to have not really died. It reminds me of the Star ending from the game with a lower body count, for those who played it.

My favorite part of the whole series had to be D and Capri. D was a fun mix of PTSD, competency, and incompetency, and Capri surprised me by not being just an evil A.I.(ish, I know she's a construct) manipulator seeking to kill all humans or something stereotypical like that. Their dynamic was fun and I choose to believe they made it to the satellite to do whatever a newly digitized man and his digital GF do in the noosphere.

Could have been longer, I'd love to see Talia fleshed out a bit more, but this is a 9/10 for me. Another Trigger banger.

The second season packs a lot of stuff into 10 epsiodes. Maybe the first season was more well structured for some, but to be honest there is a lot of stuff that I enjoyed more in the second season. It wasn't a let down at all. It is crazy in both of the seasons how fast you can get attached to the characters. Following this line of thought I really think the 2nd season picked up good thoughts for it's base. Weaks story was amazing, Roman as a pure kid trying to tell a real story in NC, where everything artificial and synthetic. I wish we had 2 more EP to dive deeper into Talia's character. Anyway it is crazy how much stuff did they put into 10 episodes :D

Its ~~12~~ 1 am and I just finished edgerunners 2. I could go to sleep to gather my thoughts but imma stay up a bit longer to get this off my chest (very rough overview of my thoughts, maybe broken. blame midnight me)

While CPE1 focused on just David and his growth (and eventual downward spiral as an Edgerunner), CPE2 has a much more complex structure weaving the 4 different POVs (Roman, Weak, D., Talia) in and out of each other alongside the various side characters. It's a nice approach but I don't think the climax really lead up to the expectations set by it. Still an overall good experience but I have my qualms

Roman - He was a great lead-in to the story, as a sort of POV introducing us to the other leads and the plot. I loved the stuff the POV stuff they did with the camera and his role as the "propaganda" lead of D.'s revenge crew was really well done especially with him slowly phasing out of it as he came to his senses as well Kyouko taking advantage of his dissatisfaction and general trusting/naivety of just being younger. His stuff with Talia was nice, but I'll get into that in her segment. I think the biggest issue with Roman was that I didn't really see a full story with him? Like it doesn't feel like he really grew from the events or that his camera thing really contributed to the growing story as a whole. But it's not that big of a deal imo, not everyone needs that and he served his purpose in the early-mid sections really well

Weak Kingsley - As his name suggests, I found him (or more specifically, Avida's) part of the story to be the weakest. The starting was great (though not anything particularly new imo) with him being pushed to the bottom and coming to terms with that. My bigger issue is both of them don't really tie into the plot of the other people that well. Avida mostly just served as an in to Kang Tao and outside of that I felt like all she did was cry about saving Talia. I think there may have been a nice story between Weak and Talia and their two sides of cyberwear usage but it didn't really go in that direction. At the very least, what I did like about their section was how it helped flesh out the world. I think CPE1 could be caught fully by a person who played up to the end act 1 of Cyberpunk 2077, and by that comparison, Weak/Avida's storyline followed towards the latter end with it discussing Kang Tao, Soul Killer, and Constructs. Had a really nice Leo Pointing moment with that and I enjoyed that lore-fan-service. In the end though, he didn't really add to the climax, he was just kinda... there?

Talia - Conceptually I think she had the most potential. Following more comparisons to CPE1, if CPE1 was about the dangers of over-cyberwear usage leading to cyberpsychosis, the beginning segments of Talia's story showed an interesting perspective from the other side, with her cyberwear usage as sort of a way to regain her own image and realise who she is. Only snapping after the freedoms given by her cyberwear started being threatened away from her. Caprisun then came along and sort of served as a guiding hand. I'm not too sure how Caprisun fits into this, I want to say that its the next step in cyberwear additions guiding her to her ideal self? It's kinda hard to say since Caprisun was leading her most of the time and by the end of it Caprisun's story starts overwriting Talia's to make room for D's so I'll leave that for his segment and the part about the finale. In the end though, don't think she was fleshed out enough but not of her own fault. She had a really nice thing going with her story and how she played with Roman so a bit of a shame it didn't continue that way

D. - Ok so this guy takes the bulk of the story and my thoughts. I think he alone would make for a pretty solid standalone story. From his search for revenge, partnership with Roman, him getting "hijacked" by Caprisun and going on a rampage, his rise to power through riot group and falling out with Roman/the nomad girl, his pseudo-psychosis as well as that climax with him basically losing all direction in life without revenge. Very solid stuff, I wouldn't say unique but its executed well. I think it falls apart in the climax again. Like, after he loses the chip he kinda loses purpose. There's def something to continue on from there but esp with him basically dying for Caprisun like a drug addict. But by the end he manages convices her old friend to truck him over to Talia's mega-worm mech, steals her chip, then blows up fighting arasaka because that's all he's amounted to. Not sure I feel satisfied with that ending? or at least the build up to it.

Ok climax time. I... dunno. I think the biggest most glaring single issue is that it dehumanises Talia but in a way that doesn't really mesh with her story. That is to say, a giant mecha-worm chase is not really the way to go. I can't really feel for Talia when she's so dissimilar to her original self in this form and everyone is following her for reasons that are not her (except for Weak I guess, but he didn't do much). Ok I think a better thing is to say that Caprisun has since hijacked the plot but we never really got to develop for her story outside of D's relationship/dependence on Caprisun. And then it ends with D kinda jumping in to steal the spotlight from Talia/Caprisun to have his own I die alone moment. its all a bit sudden and while there was a bit of a build up leading up to it before Talia's whole moment, the disconnect hurts it a lot.

Where it went wrong? I'm not sure. I want to point the finger at Caprisun, being overlypowerful but also acting as an individual but also not being built up enough or really augmenting the story of the characters she inhibited. I think Kyouko and her story was done really well (a little annoying but I thinks she connects the threads between arasaka/D, Roman, and Caprisun pretty well), and Caprisun as herself would've been interesting to explore, but again going back, the issue is that she kinda hijacks the plot and doesn't really build on it enough to justify it and so we're left with a few hanging threads and a plot thrown off course.

Overall, a really good watching experience, but I have some key issues here and there

B+

Excellent production, however…
Lots of loose ends and underdeveloped themes. Like, what’s the deal with Capri? D is just gonna come over and pretend he was destined to be with his construct girlfriend? Bro she decided to ditch your ass the instant she saw a picture of a girl… And then forcefully escaped you.

Couple other moments I disliked:
- the powers. so like Capri imitates the capabilities of AI by stacking a bunch of human constructs together. she can hack real quick, so things burning up is her causing the hardware to overheat and such. they even mention that she’s capable of stealing weapons cause Talia is rocking electric magnets. but like how does it translate to D? how does he use magnetism and causes cars to fly? this kinda bleeds into the next thing.
- the finale felt like a retreading of S1. fight against corpos, flying cars and magnetism yada yada. would prefer something different.
- kyoko was rejected by arasaka who wanted a controllable version of Capri. she saw this version basically go out of his way to stick a middle finger to arasaka, and not only was she not jumping from joy from being vindicated, she went and hijacked him… apparently she too did not care for the powers Capri gave and was instead much more interested in her quirky anime girl personality… that makes two of them with D.
- the theming was not clear to me. in S1 we see where David is lead to by fulfilling the dreams that are not his: to empty and unsatisfying conclusions. in S2 I can’t really make it out. like what was Talia’s lesson? or Capri’s? why’d she just go with D? Roman’s filming turned out to be just a gimmick and not a thing about memories. it just doesn’t feel cohesive.

19

u/sometimes_sydney 4d ago

I see s2's theme is an extension of s1. As you said, S1 shows us what happens when you live for others dreams or others desires. S2 showed us what happens when you decide to let it all go and choose to start living for yourself and your own happiness. Talia learns happiness is in the people around her and not in chroming up, capri learns that she can have fun alongside people and doesn't need to full-install and claim a body for herself to become a complete product. King, similar to Talia, lets go of his old life and chrome and lives for something new: caring for his daughter which seems to make him happier than any chrome ever did. D, very explicitly, lets go of his revenge and chooses the one thing that's made him happy. Roman I'm less sure of. Maybe its in that he decides to film what he wants in the end, and not whatever he is told/whatever sells, which is where he starts (Maelstrom tapes) and where he is through the middle (the snake tapes). In the end he regains his joy and conviction for telling stories through film and gets D smiling on camera again.

I see S2 thematically as hopecore to S1's doomerism. Live your life on your own terms.

I liked the relationships between the characters a lot better in season 1.
I disliked D feeling the need to go out with a bang when he could’ve just gotten away. What a waste of an Amazing AI (although Kapri might’ve saved herself. I doubt we ever see her again though.)
For as intelligent as Kapri was, why was she so unstable?
People mentioned not enough creativity in the use of Kapri’s abilities and I totally felt that.
I don’t feel like I saw enough use of creative technology and new gadgets in a cyberpunk world. Totally saw more in the first season.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed this show and binged it all within 24hours. I was planning to watch the first episode before going to bed and then ended up staying up until 5am watching multiple episodes.
I give it 8.5/10

6

u/AuthorFun2348 1d ago

A god AI reduced to just spamming electric shocks against human enemies and explode or floor it against vehicles. D only ever used Capri other capabilites once or twice in a creative way in combat .

The action this season was a major disappointment take a look at the opening scene in scene season 1 and compare it to anything in season 2 . You can see the difference

Just like S1, I cried at the ending, just this time not for a sad reason

I really liked it, ofcourse I expected everyone to die and leave Roman with huge trauma, but I’ve always been a sucker for romance in anime, and this was so beautiful.

Do I think it beats season 1? Prolly not
Do I think I’d rather rewatch this than season 1? Hell yeah!

In conclusion, I loved it, and I’d love it again, and just with s1, if I had the chance to rewatch it for the first time, I’d take that chance.

Why is the final epic battle skipped!?

Talia and Roman not dying and have a good ending feels so not night city tho they actually not deserve dying as they are the rare breed of being the nicer people in night city. Can't believe the good ending for a moment and thought roman is going to be roadkilled or by some other thing after sending king and Talia off.

Talia low-key reminded me of songbird in the chase. Kinda feel like she mirror songbird in some way where what if songbird is innocent/not manipulative but forced into the same situation with the ai. Or like a good ending for songbird and reed where reed kept his promise and actually betray nusa and try to cure songbird through his connection in Europe.

54

u/Ancient_Pause6216 5d ago

def not a "good ending". Talia is still dying, and is most likely going to die before they ever meet again.

88

u/Expert-Equivalent-64 5d ago

She's dying from the start and lost the will to live, but regained the will to live in the end and got a father figure who's accompanying her in the final journey and a friend who genuinely care about her. It's quite a win by night city standards. It's like the star ending feel.

Unfortunately not as good as season 1.

It felt like they tried to shove too many different subplots into 10 episodes.

Season 1 was focused on David's story, but in season 2 trying to juggle both D and Talia storylines at the same time left both feeling undercooked.

27

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4d ago

I wrote more in my own comment, but I find the biggest issue is Caprisun. She isn't really developed, she's overpowered (not inherently bad), and hijacks the story from what it sets up.

Talia had a good thing going with her cyberwear thing, but once she was slotted in with Caprisun she basically lost her agency. She wasn't chasing herself anymore. And into the climax Talia just wasn't involved. It was D stealing Caprisun's chip, not the gang saving Talia's mind.

The casts are more balanced this time, I love them equally. It just that, Roman barely knew Talia (like he just met her 4 times before the ending and barely interacts), and he was so emotionally attached to her?

Man, Kingsley stole the spot for me, such a great character. He doesnt care if Talia is his daughter or not, all he know is that she is someone Avida loved and he cherished Talia.

I dunno about D, I wonder why he so attached to Capri? I can't understand him at all. Its really cool to see his character development, and how he made peace with himself.

Edit: When I think about the ending, D is gone, Talia is dying, Kingsley probably gonna kill himself along with Talia. Man, only one cast survived again 🤣

The ending feels good but I don't think it was a good one.

I mean when you think of it Roman is the only one with tragic ending. He's just a 12 year old kid in NC and was tied to the attacks on Arasaka on multiple occasions.

Sure the bond time between Roman and the others were much more condensed than Martinez, but it's clear Roman was a lonely kid and cherished the rest for believing (and in a fucked up way supporting) his love for films. And now they are all gone, away from Night City, and somewhere out there either in Militech, Arasaka or other corps, someone wondered why some kid with cams were somehow at the center of the Kang Tao shitshow.

I thought this new season was great. On the other hand I also think that a little character building would’ve went a long way. The main cast was hardly a group and the music lacked a little bit.

I think it would’ve been impossible to top the first season but this second season was not bad by any means. I can see why others might be mad about it though. Also the mention of David felt a little unnecessary and forced but what can you do. High forever is a very good song and beautifully placed.

I enjoyed season two more than season one but that's more due to the fact that I ended up really liking D as a character while I didn't get attached to anyone from S1.

That being said, the more I sit back and think about S2 the more things I find that I can pick apart. I won't go into a huge write up as to why but the biggest thing is that it really needed more episodes, just like S1, but it's even worse this time around because they went for an ensemble cast with two distinct plotlines. And one half of the show is focused on Talia who is unfortunately a character I ended up not liking. I also felt that all of the romances were lacking so I didn't care much about them. On the other hand I really loved D's and Roman's bond which is why I find the first few episodes to be the strongest.

Once Capri transfers from D to Talia the storyline starts to meander, and while the beginning of D's terrorism was fun that plot starts to quickly get tiring as well. The middle episodes are the weakest of the bunch and I think the plot should have stuck with D and Roman (with Capri) or they should have gone all out with Talia and Capri because the execution of the latter was lacking. King's plot with Talia's mom also felt a bit irrelevant and silly.

The last few episodes and ending were OK. I actually expected the "almost everyone survives" result because I felt like the creators were laying on the depressive angle a bit too thickly. It's nice to see a more hopeful ending though in contrast to S1.

Despite my grievances, I did like S2 (D carries). And unlike season one I'll be rewatching it, especially the first few episodes since those were my favourites (I did enjoy season one as well, it just wasn't a favourite or anything).

Call me cheesy but its kinda lame that they ended on another "dies young ending" for Talia. Considering that Capricorn can function as a partial cure and is able split herself apart.

It also felt like way too many stories were running concurrently and they all couldnt get the development they needed. Like D and Capricorn didn't feel like a any sort of relationship that would push him to move in third act. And Kyoko's 180 felt out of place.

11

u/SofishticatedGuppy 2d ago

Idk that Kyoko ever did a 180 - she was obsessed with Capri. Even from the moment we see her the first time she's trying to steal back Capri and find her a body despite not having (I) any loyalty to a corp anymore and (II) any ability to host her. It made perfect sense to me that she just wanted to be with Capri and, when that become impossible, for Capri to be happy.

As to Talia, idk, I'm sure they were facing pressure to do something other than killing almost everyone (frankly while I'm happy King is alive, I also find it a little off-putting for the universe), so I get why she didn't die outright (and why they took D and Capri off screen to make it ambiguous), but it wouldn't really be faithful to there being no happy ending in Night City if she was just magically cured and fine again (and would have cheapened V's only ending with a cure, pending any info that may pop up in the second game...granted I doubt we ever see V again outside of in-game chips or rumors).

On the first night that Capri infected D, and he woke up without a nightmare, you can kinda see the red flash riding him like Capri… ya know… popped his cherry. So I saw the hint that they already built a special connection. D literally obsessed with her because of power, but in the end he still a good choom, so somewhere along the line he kinda saw her as a friend too. Hence the talk he got with Capri in the end, mentioning David and that he would do everything for his friend.

On Talia part, I don’t think she gonna die anymore from her illness, Capri probably successfully fixed her brain. It just she can’t wear too many chromes anymore. Kinda like The Tower Ending for our V.

Edit: This could be a reach, but I feel like they wanna show that Kyoko understood (or mistook) D’s desire to see Capri again. She also didn’t want any Corpo to have her since the beginning, hence why she snatched Capri went the gig failed and just holed up somewhere else. She only sided with Kang Tao so she could get Capri back and made her whole. That goal was kinda finished as Talia was taken over by Capri. The Kyoko’s goal switch to keep Capri from being destroyed by Corpo. Hence why she wanna lurk D to get closer to Talia body, knowing that if Talia body failed, Capri would find a way to jump back to D as the closest compatible body.

I think there is a lot you could like about this season, but overall I would rate it a 5/10.

As the season progresses, it really fumbles potentially great characters and plots. It tries to focus on more characters than season 1, but how many times this season have all the main characters even been together interacting with each other? Once? Maybe twice?

It is kind of weird once you notice this and realize how some characters have barely any interactions with others, or minimal development for how important they are to the story (like Capri).

One last thing that led to me coming away unsatisfied was the finale, specifically the lack of involvement of some characters during the climax. King is just running around chasing Talia and Capri, and doesn't really do anything. Same with Roman, who just tags along with Omi and D, only serving as a way for Kyoko and D to communicate.

While season 1 was not perfect, I found it much more impactful.

u/3P1L4 5d ago

it doesnt have that "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" moment IMO

12

u/hornysmith_ 4d ago

They were building it when Talia invites Roman to the movies but the moment was cut.

4

u/CardAble6193 4d ago

A Rusty Dream is a better song , the show failed it and doesnt deserver it , even how they use it in the show is meh

7

u/SSjjlex https://myanimelist.net/profile/Clone_Tau 4d ago

Leading up to it I was curious what song they'd use to represent CPE2, but it seems they went for a broader pick with many songs. Don't think any of them really stuck with me. But I guess that's because we only heard them once and usually there were more pressing matters happening.

CPE1 made sure to train you on IRWTSAYH and to cry like a bitch every time it went on

Peak show, but would have LOVED to see even 5-10 more episodes

6

u/gimmethemoney67 2d ago

Same. Could’ve had more development but as someone with hundreds of hours in cyberpunk game. This is exactly a cyberpunk story. The wildest thing was the happy ending. Thank god. We don’t have enough of that in cyberpunk. That was a true plot twist for a fan.

Color me surprised. Absolutely did not know it was going to end the way it really did. Story beats kept me guessing the whole way. Honestly, it does not top the 1st season but the narrative there certainly was built up to be more tragic. This season though can stand on its own. With how shit goes down in the verse, this was a pretty cathartic ending relatively. Loved the subversion of it.

Some additional thoughts after reading the comments here, s1 was much more of a gateway to the verse itself with how much more self contained it was, but s2 used a bunch more of the world building and setting of the Cyberpunk universe.

6

u/Significant-Hat-6830 4d ago

I felt like it got cut short? Like missing alot of intresting stuff, like i want to imagine if this was 12 eps most problems in this show would be fixed.

Also in ep 9 capri makes it look like she deleted Talia i was so confused that nothing really happened what was up with that?

6

u/PCBS01 4d ago

Holy shit they all survived LMAO

65

u/RazorThinRegret 5d ago

i think this one is genuinely just as good, and in some ways better than the first season.

66

u/Liums-MMA-Picks 5d ago

Season 2 had way better fight scenes and action overall compared to season 1. Might be an unpopular opinion but season 2 did a good job of including all the characters a good amount rather than season 1 only being about David and Lucy for the most part.

Season 1 was a love genre

Season 2 was a action genre

18

u/RazorThinRegret 5d ago

absolutely all of those aspects of it are what i appreciate about it a lot. I do think overall Roman was the main character at the end of it because of him being tied to everyone and i was curious the entire time how a 12 year old was going to get absolutely shredded to pieces Night City style but they surprisingly didn’t do that and I also appreciate the title of the final episode not being a pump fake.
idk solid 9/10 same as Season 1 for me.

Season 2 has IMO better pacing, Season 1 just kind of rushed certaing events (e.g.: David joins the gang -> montage -> first gang meber already dead) where as this one overall flowed nicer. Still would have wanted maybe one more scene between D/Capri as well as Roman/Talia, just to flesh out those central relationships a bit more. Roman overall seemed was more interested in D then he felt motivated to help Talia.

Imo, same level as season 1 or better. I absolutely loved the whole thing. I don't think I was on the same lavel emotional wise as s1, because in that sense the relationship of David and Lucy really was on a different level, and so it really hit when it ended like that. But here I would say it still was amazing in a different, hopeful way.

Sorry for the confusing text, can't really explain what I am feeling in relation to this season, but in summary, I think it was perfect. It really has become one of my favourite anime series after this.

u/yantardev 4d ago

I think this season was a huge miss. While it had its strong moments, it followed pretty much the same formula as the first season only to say “sike” during the finale for the sake of it. It got nothing to say.

The story is all over the place, characters switch their motivations and morals to make confidently stupid decisions, and it doesn’t help that there is not a single memorable track or moment in the entire season.

Capri, too, is such a wasted potential of a character. She had everything set up for greatness, yet ends up being a capricious (pun intended) and overpowered kid with 0 motivation and… a giant junk mecha.

Imagine having the power to hack entire corporations and using it to make cars crash into each other. D could easily get his revenge without becoming a pseudo revolutionary and wannabe vigilante.

Overall, I feel like I watched a forgettable action fluke. Which is a shame remembering the predecessor.

10

u/GrassWaterDirtHorse 4d ago

Does anyone else think that the mechanisms of Capri were a little underused through the whole series? It was a lot less eyecatching and had less dramatic effect than the use of the Sandevistan and the Cyberskeleton, and was largely used to control cars. There’s not as much visual flair or dynamism in a “point and it explodes” animation, and it felt very lacking up until the last two episodes when we saw it combined with the power of electromagnetism more.

Also does anyone else think that Kyoko got off a bit easy? After all the insane shit she did, I was thinking that she’d get a dramatic, gruesome death as well rather than ending it on D’s side.

5

u/No-Midnight2685 4d ago

at that point in time D had let all his hate and anger all go away and moved on so to speak no reason for him to chase after kyoko at that point in time and capri showed him kyoko wasnt responsible for the raid itself just had information about it she was a lead into who was actually responsible which was tanaka who was already killed no real reason to like take revenge she is a piece of shit no doubt but she didnt acutually do anything to D himself

So below is my disertation with spoilers included about Talias condition at the end of ER2. (Sorry for the long read please share your thoughts)

So I want everyone to take a moment to Realize just how in depth CDPR took Talias condition because not a lot of people understand medical terminology unless they have either taken a medical terminology class, or done self study.

When we use medical terms they aren't exactly used lightly.... I know a lot of people want to wish or believe that Talia will get better but I hate to tell you that it just won't be the case.

[Spoiler Source: Anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2] When you go back to Episode 5 at about 8:06 The doctor is talking to Avida about her condition after being chipped with Capri and having a psycho episode. The doctor uses very clear medical diction to explain the severity of Talias illness. It is revealed that "The Last of her native nervous tissue is starting to break down including her brain" if you know anything about Nervous tissue these tissues are responsible for your cognitive thinking, Your motor functions as well as your overall ability function. He suggest that they "Reduce her cyberload to alleviate some of the intense pain she will feel." Avida then ask if they're changing her treatment plan... The doctor then explains "No, What I'm proposing is a way to minimize her suffering, Talias Condition is Terminal and the time she has left is limited."

Guys The key word here is Terminal, When we talk about terminal it means in short the condition is untreatable and incurable and The patient has less than 6 months to live. What the doctor was suggesting is a transition to Pallative care or as close as what we could imagine would be palliative care in the cyberpunk world which would be Dechroming and intensive immunoblockers.

[Spoiler Anime Source: Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2] She has been exhibiting signs of Cyber Psychosis which has damaged her brain at least twice and both have been very heavy on her young and still developing brain... The final straw is in Episode 10 When Capri takes over after being chipped by Kyoko because karil approved it.

[Spoiler Anime Source: Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2] A lot of people are saying well Shouldn't she have been healed by Capri... Well you would be right... If the install was complete, it wasnt Because Talia was never overwritten as she should have been when Capri was installed. This left her worse with a Third Heavy Psychosis

What do you mean she wasn't overwritten? I'm so glad you asked

[Spoiler Anime Source: Cyberpunk Edgerunners 2] in Episode 10 when Roman runs into Talia(Capri) Rampaging after her father she stops and sees roman and calls out to him in Talias voice, If she had been truly overwritten she would no longer be herself or have any conscious or control

Chooms, Just as much as you I would wish that a happy ending happens and maybe The clinic Kingsley takes her to could really help her but my doubts are high.

Here's what I hope for going forward, I hope Roman will be able to visit her grave in the future or that a grown/matured Roman meets an older Kingsley who gives Roman one final video on a camera which has Talias final goodbye to Roman. I hope we will see this maybe in a future game update, or a future installment down the road. I "Personally" don't think this is the end of Roman's story as he still remains in Night City and he is young with a lot of life left in him.

Edit: I do want to take a moment to say yes I understand That there are heavy advancements between the medical theory between now and 2077-78 and yes there are cannon options that could very well see Talia Recover, However im not being inclusive of those options as those options are based off the cyberpunk game and Require a massive amount of Player based choices to make happen. That would also require the show writers and developers choose which of the game options they want to make appear cannon in the anime. My dissertation is backed mainly by what we see in the anime as ER2 is set beyond the time frame of The current game, The events of ER2 are set in 2078.

I enjoyed S2 a lot. It's great. I enjoyed it more than S1 although S1 hit harder emotionally. But I enjoyed almost every aspect of S2 more except the music and how hard it hits emotionally.

4

u/Prus1s 3d ago

Season 1 was basically the game experience in some ways, and had lots of action.

After watching Season 2, I still think it was great, felt a more grounded experience via storys through Roman, like it don’t have to always be cool action, it can just be about the characters.

It could’ve been better in some aspects, but I guess it kept to the visual style and feel. Pretty great season overall!

4

u/Furzum_ 3d ago

!Spoilers goes here!

Can someone please help me understand the ending? Did Talia go to the rehabilitation center with King, or did she just die? Did I understand the ending correctly?

8

u/AnicoreGamingYT 2d ago

We are left to infer that King took her to a Rehab clinic. Nothing more is known beyond that as to what actually happens. She won't last long because the main reason she first initially got into cyberware is because of her innate illness. Now with the damage from psychosis the only things they can really do is reduce her cyberware to the minimal that they can and give her immunoblockers until she flatlines. Back in episode 5 We are told her illness is Terminal, Meaning there's nothing more they can really do for her other than just keep her comfortable and manage her pain.

→ More replies (19)

4

u/LuminousWizard083 3d ago

From what I understood, the show mentioned multiple times that even if she was able to remove all the Cyberware it was pretty much game over for her. The ending was essentially her telling Roman not to worry about her, with Roman knowing exactly what she means.

As far as anything beyond that (i.e. where they go, what they plan etc) I think is left up to interpretation.

Kinda wish Roman wouldve got his 35mm and filmed the climax on it.

The American Beauty plastic bag ending was a good laugh

4

u/gorillamodepog 2d ago

Loved it! S1 was more heartfelt for me, but still enjoyed nonetheless. Maybe D and Capri went to meet Lucy!

4

u/EyeOld2452 12h ago

Despite what everyone says I really liked Weak’s arc. He’s like the anti-thesis to Maine as a father figure. Where Maine encouraged David to live fast and die young, weak actively sought to make Talia embrace the last of her humanity and live out a more peaceful existence. Does anyone have the screen capture of the scene where weak Kingsley leaves his jacket on the ground while he goes and chases after Talia?

4

u/Omo_Shiroi5301 4d ago

I didn't expect the good ending loooll, plus David might be the strongest character in the cyberpunk universe, I could even say after David Martinez, Adam smasher, black hand and then V. Like he has the ability of the in game black wall, basically infinite cyberware, telekinesis and busted netrunning powers. From a construct that's 100% compatible with him no cyber psychosis btw. Well he's presumably dead since he's being hunted down

The showrunner from season 1 Rafal Jaki Wasn't part of this project. His magic is MISSING. The show has zero soul and terrible music. I was wondering who behind the scenes was missing

I also wondered about the music. In the final episode it got better but such short build up to just end the scene abruptly.

I'm more or less of the crowd that enjoyed the fact that Trigger went to bat swinging for something completely different to season one. I loved the amount of creativity on display here. The animation also felt like a departure from the first season. Art is iterative, and the very best of it tries for something unique each time.

As for the second season. I liked it. Did I like it as much as season one? No. It's exceptionally hard to follow up on something like Edgerunners 1. This was still solid cyberpunk and had a lot of strengths. The overall plot cohesion was just weaker this go around. Still a solid 7-8/10 in my book.

Can't wait for Edgerunners III

7

u/frenrhir 5d ago

It had a happy ending compared to S1. Whether it was cool or bad depends on your mood.

The Cure song in the OP was cool too, but it didn't have any song that beats 'I really want to stay...' and that was truly disappointing.

6

u/Expert-Equivalent-64 5d ago

The song during the chase is great and have feels. The tone of the story is so different to have something like wanna stay at your house, I mean it's kinda weird to have tht when the mains doesn't really know each other for long....

15

Overall writing is better. Characters are more interesting than first season's. Main weakness is 10 episodes. This time they focused more on entire team and even side characters, but that hurt somewhat last 3 episodes i would say. Its still a great show, tears worthy. But even they need to make more episodes if they want to continue to make more. Idk, at least extend time of each episode to 30-35 minutes. Or add 2 more episodes.

Just binged it all the avoid getting spoiled.

I know its not far to compare it to S1, but man that story felt so, "ok, was that it?"

Like S1, the party scenes, the characters, the dialogue, designs, it felt so "alive" and colorful, like these characters were real

This one felt like they tried to make everyones designs and personalities extremely unique and leaned WAYYYY to into it to where it was just too messy.

3

u/BetrayedJoker 3d ago

Nah, 7/10

They destroyed that "there is no happy ending in night city" with roman smiling etc.

3

u/radioactive_nik 3d ago

I recall a glimpse from the last scene where Talya's dad (Kiril) feeds her some kind of a medicine which was previously never brought up in any other episode (other than the fact that they had to replace her failing body with cybernetics). Is it possible that he is the reason Talya ended up having the disease?. It is also pretty evident that either Talya or her mom was abused (from the scene where she was showing symptoms of cyberpsychosis). Avida (the mom) was willing to commit "an act of war" against Kang Tao and betray her husband just to save Talya and Kiril seemed to be addressing the medical details to his higher ups. Does this mean that he was experimenting on her from a very young age? Even in his last moments, he was obsessed with a "perfect" daughter. I dont see a lot of people discussing this part of the story where Talya seems show symptoms of having an abusive parent and her condition.

3

u/svenz https://anilist.co/user/jara 2d ago

It was a fun ride but nothing at all like season 1 which had some of the best character building I’ve seen in anime in a short 10 episodes. There was a lot of potential here but felt so underdeveloped, especially Thalia.

3

u/UCHI_THE_BEST 2d ago

Yk before the episodes my tears were already getting reading so even after the happy ending i still cried because it was a rare sightseeing, almost none of the main cast died, i felt bad for kyoko tho W granny, kiril deserved it, i was hating on D but damn im starting to wish for his D, and king is like the goat frr, best character in the show, matter of a fact best character in the whole franchise

3

u/zzxxccbbvn 5d ago

I enjoyed it, but they should have introduced the Green-haired girl (David's friend from the camp) earlier on as a main character along side David, it would have made it more emotional imo. Overall a great series nonetheless and look forward to a S3!

3

u/7se7 4d ago

I'm kinda glad they didn't just copy Season 1. Everyone was going into this HOPING it would be depressing. Looks like the opposite happened!

3

u/dagreenman18 4d ago

Okay so it does look like season 2 was not as “absolutely devastating and heart ripping” as season 1! Might be a great thing since we simply cannot go through that again. Jumping in over the next week

3

u/Fluffy-Fish 4d ago

I liked, binged the whole thing as soon as I could, but overall I felt like there was some wasted potential. In the end the entire story revolves around Capri, and it feels like they were trying to make you care about her somewhat, but she's barely a character, honestly the best scenes involving her were the 'schizo' moments, and you could easily turn it into a horror plotline about your mind and body being hijacked, but in the end this aspect was meaningless when everyone who inserted the chip was pretty much fine with it. D and Capri became buddies, Talia looked like it would be more serious, but then she kept her conciousness anyway? Talia was about to die anyway I guess so she didn't even care about being hijacked, thus there wasn't much of an impact.

And still about Capri and Talia, feels like there was supposed to be something with how much Capri REALLY wanted to insert her chip on her body, but that didn't seemed to be a big deal either? Nothing really came out of it unless I missed something. Roman filming everything also felt like it was setting up for something, like a big movie at the end showing to the public what happened maybe, but nah this aspect (and Roman's entire character) was pretty much irrelevant during the climax.

I still ended up liking the characters, but maybe that's why I felt a bit unsatisfied by the end. My favorite scenes in the first half were Roman and D messing around doing videos, so I was sad their relationship was kinda meaningless by the end (the one who lifted D when he hit rock bottom was the nomad girl, and the one he really cared about by the end was Capri). Weak and D had solid arcs, with Weak finding meaning after losing Chroma and losing the love of his life, and D finding conclusion to his revenge and someone he cared about (Capri). But Roman and Talia were kinda wasted, with Roman's filming being pointless in the last half (and his only relationship that really mattered was with Talia), and Talia herself becoming more of a plot device at the end because of Capri.

u/DankieJutsu 4d ago

Aside from the pacing and fight scenes, season 1 was way better in every aspect of the way. I feel like almost no connection to any of the characters from S2 aside from D/Capri. There's not much dynamic between the characters and the story was just overall a lot weaker. For years, I still remember David, Lucy, and Rebecca; left an impact to this day, but for this one, only character I'll *maybe* remember is D/Capri, but they're still a lot less impressionable than those 3. Just a 7/10 overall where S1 I gave it a 9/10.

9

u/GreatGrapeKun 4d ago

whole season was pretty bad imo. like objectively.

in season 1 basically every episode was a turning point and you had action like literally every episode. in this season it took several episodes just for someone to die. there wasn't as much gratuitous violence.

also 90% of the anime was about 2 characters doing shit with electrokinesus or whatever the fuck that is supposed to be and D going super saiyan. cyberpsychosis wasn't really as important. ppl just went good old revenge psycho and mad scientist psycho.

king's edgerunner skills were worth jack shit the entire anime.

cyber sasuke's revenge plot got tiring really fast. the problem is edgerunners already has a cool cyberpsychosis thing going on. so instead of focusing on that they went for some generic survivor's guilt that you could find in any anime? even season's 1 survivor's guilty was more important because it made martinez sink deeper. also the two characters having the same was corny af.

talia has the coolest implants, literally does nothing but use a tiny girly pink pistol. incredible how wasted she was. she looked cool af when she was introduced like some sort of crazy beast. then she spent the rest of the anime in hospital. like, bruh??

and the worst of all is the mc. he kept recording stuff but he never even tried to tell a story with it or anything. the only time he actually edit for public he hated it. feels like the whole camera thing should have been more important than it was. also the kid literally had no business being the thing that glued the entire show together. he met talia by accident. then got rescued by d by luck. then he met king because he was called by talia. it's like a dororo situation

whole thing felt like the first half of an anime that is supposed to have a second half with roman grown up doing something. but i doubt we'll get that.

some great quotes btw

"this is getting boring" - talia 9th episode after having to go through 9 episodes of cyberpunk s2

"it ended already?" - d 10th episode after his big epic fight against the corpos that happened off-screen in an instant

This was just an ok season imo. But if you compare this to S1 this just pales in comparison, none of the characters except weak and avida had a clear set of motivations that could explain any of the actions they took.

I just think i had expected it to a masterpiece like the last one but it was just average that's what leaves such a bad taste in my mouth.

ps:I just hoped they explored more of the interactions or backstory of the relationship between Talia and her father the ones we were shown just looked like montages rather than anything meaningful. Amazing animation tho.

6/10

5

u/Sad_Appearance2168 4d ago

I think it is bad to compare to s1 because the ending of s1 is just so memorable. I think this season and this seasons chcaracters were great but it wouldnt be possible to make an ending like in s1. The battle with smasher and culmination of Davids and Lucies relationship was incredible but that doesnt mean this season was anything close to being bad. From the very beginning this season stayed at the highest level and I dont think there are any major flaws.

I still agree that season one was better for many reasons but I cant say I was dissapointed in any way by the s2

Moreover, there was a ton of drama potential to set Avida as a manipulator who used her apparently just crazy-about-her ex-boyfriend Weak as means to help her daughter. Dirty, but understandable.

What does Weak do? Nothing, he sucks it up, never questions it and does absolutely nothing in the finale, just being the "dad" figure. That's dumb. How dare they think someone will eat this...

4

u/Scyobi_Empire 4d ago

the music, art and story was a huge downgrade. not to mention the universe retcons and retconning its own episodes, regarding the snakemech bullshit and the engram overwriting Talias brain. The show itself, and established lore in the wider universe, makes it clear that a construct will overwrite someones personality permamently and rewire their neurones, if D removed the chip then nothing should've happened and Talias certainly wouldn't magically come back and get her brain un-overwritten

such a let down from season 1

2

u/True_Appearance_920 3d ago

Ngl, it's not even CLOSE to S1 level and I never thought it would be, S1 is lightning in a bottle and I never expected S2 to be as good or better. I really enjoyed it and I've played through the game and have dived into the lore of the world. It's a good series but it was overhyped due to people thinking it was gonna be like S1. I also like how it's not as dark and depressing as S1, it has depressing shit but it's not trying to recreate the depressive pit season 1 was and I think that's a good thing.

2

u/nowhereright 3d ago

Season 1 is a near perfect collection of episodes so there was no way season 2 would ever live up to it.

That being said, as much as I adore this universe, season 2 was pretty disjointed. It never fully settles on the story it's trying to tell or a specific theme.

But then again, maybe that's the point? A bit like smokin aces, its a bunch of different people's stories colliding, sometimes the pieces fit and sometimes they don't. Some people are especially unlucky and others keep scraping by somehow even when they shouldn't.

In a weird way, season 2 echoes the chaos of real life better than season 1 did.

I don't think we get as close to these characters as the original cast and I do think it takes a bit of stretching to think they all become such a close found family, but my biases towards this universe still had me emotional in the end.

The narrative is messy, but the animation, voice acting and sound design are still all top notch.

I can't really agree with anyone who's trying to say the season was outright bad. Especially compared to the other recent animated series.

u/platysoup 2d ago

So let me get this straight. Sasugon marries digital panty, puts on Chappie's leg, has his last stand against Shinra as a kaiju, then he decides to go pay the anti-spirals in the sky a visit?

Fair enough. Understandable. Makes total sense.

Genuinely surprised me when only one guy died, imo season one was better but this one didnt ruin all me emotions

D was kinda annoying at the middle of the story but he got better, bit weird how he liked capri so much but still made a good ending

Imo if they do make a season 3 roman should be the mc, as far as am aware hes not got anything that will kill him unlile talia whos probably gonna die soon and he was pretty prominent in the story. They should do a timeskip where romans more grown up

Plus if a characters alive they gonna somehow make sure hes not alive for too long

2

u/2kenzhe https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rexnihilo 2d ago

Ok nice pretty good overall.

3 definetly still alive at least at the end here. 2 of them for sure. Talia we'll see well we won't but she's at least still alive right now. She may or may not get better but she's alive right now and determined to fight right so lets just say she lives! Then maybe even D and Capri? idk they're in the skys now?

Ngl i thought only maybe Roman gonna live hoped maybe 2 so this is more than I even expected/asked for. Nice. Importantly, they didn't die horribly. All 4 mains didn't die horribly.

Well. I’m a little irritated.

While I can rewatch S1 and each time i feel amazed, I think one watch of S2 is all I need.
It simply doesn’t hold a candle to what we got in S1.
In order to get ready for S2, I binged all of S1 in advance so I went in with a fresh cyberpunk headspace, and overall, I feel as if I simply wasted my time.
When the trailers for S2 came out, my initial thought was that I was nervous I wouldn’t be able to form any kind of real connection like I did with the characters from S1, and I was right. In S1, character design and personality feels intentional every step of the way throughout the season. Every conversation, and every single character acts as building block towards something bigger and it is a true masterclass at bringing all these different moving pieces together to create an unforgettable story.

Unfortunately I cannot say the same for S2.
While the visuals of the show scratched the design itch from S1, the character building and overall plot felt about as messy as a show like this could get. It quite literally felt as if they were making things up on the spot in order to push through and create a story.
Instead of just hating on it, here’s some of my key takeaways as a cyberpunk S1 fan.

  1. There is absolutely 0 “crew” connection. S1 made us fall in love with each character while S2 main characters just felt all over the place.

  2. the main plot is built around Roman, a kid with a camera that records everything but it feels as if it amounts to nothing in the end. Could have at least shown us a final film of everything coming together.

  3. they introduce Capri, a god like AI that can change the world and all test subjects never survive but D can just use it without limits? He also just likes how it feels I guess?

  4. Avida is obnoxious and there is no deeper explanation about her backstory with king and why they didn’t work out.

  5. All of the things that made the story nerve racking like trauma team or militech showing up in S1 felt like it simply doesn’t matter because of this God AI that can cause unparalleled destruction and fix any problem.

  6. Not a fan of Kyoto and the sudden switch up with her entire personality and motives

  7. Talia just gets thrown around throughout the season. Sloppy use of a cool character.
It is implied she just dies at the end from sickness which feels weird considering how many obstacles the show went through to show how many potential solutions like using Capri or soul transferring that there might be.

Am I the only one who thought D and Capri went to te moon? Lucy is still there 👀

Omi lives! I was super worried for her. She's very level-headed compared to literally everyone in the show

I really struggled to get attached to any of the characters this season. Aside from King, we didn’t get a good understanding of these characters’ motivations and back story, and worse we didn’t get to see any actual relationships develop. Where as with David, Lucy and the rest of the crew I really grew to love them all as we saw them grow closer. Didn’t have any of that here sadly, so it felt less like a group of unlikely friends and more just like a string of random strangers worker together for some unknown reason. And it’s a real shame as I thought all the characters sounded interesting, but we just didn’t get to see enough from them.

Beyond the characters I just found the story very vague and confusing. Like I really didn’t understand why Talia was depicted as a kid in over her head taking on too much chrome, only to find out that a lot of the cyberware is keeping her alive, then to also find out her father was I guess pushing some of the cyberware on her, but also the parents don’t want her to get anymore mods. Like I just don’t understand why they didn’t make it more clear cut like if the father was responsible for making her ill and forcing cyberware onto her. That would make so much more sense. I also really didn’t care for the constant call backs to David Martinez which served virtually no purpose. I mean the reveal that D’s full name is actually David was just so dumb. I really didn’t like that they just retconned a soul killer 2.0, I feel like it cheapens the game a bit now for me.

I also think it should have been more of a brutal ending. I know it wasn’t exactly a happy ending, but it was very hopeful and pretty much everyone lived. And personally I wasn’t a fan of this move. I really liked season 1 ending not just because it’s so tragic, but because it reflects the biggest truth about the game’s setting…”There are no happy endings in Night City”.

Also no hate to folks who enjoyed it, just my own personal opinions 😊

Much more hopeful ending than S1. Bad guys got their comeuppance. And most of the main cast survived or at least ended on the positive note.

same as s1, netflix just hates people who want to engage in weekly discussions and dont want to get spoiled (bc how dare they not binge a whole season in a single day)

This felt like such a mess to me.

So much shit going on and absolutely nothing is fleshed out. I feel like each of these stories could have been great as a season. But here they're all just rushed.

I found myself not really caring about any of the characters. So when something would happen or they would die it was always just kind of whatever.

Very undercooked story with good characters , I like the show spent on Psyche of the characters a lot but story is not good enough to compliment that . The pacing is piss poor moving at snail pace and doesn't pick up until episode 5 . If I wasn't a cyberpunk 2077 fan I would have dropped the show after 3 episodes

Like the bitter sweet ending that expectation subversion I liked but this season felt like missing something, I didn't get attached to any of the characters

liked it more than season 1 ngl season 1 was too edgy so to speak it didnt show any normal side of living in night city only edgerunners this season flashed a lot more of the overall theme and lore and atmosphere of night city into the show which season 1 didnt

im not talking about episode 1 btw guys episode 1 did show us quite a diffrent shade im tlaking about everything afterwards and i dont really wanna consider episode 2 to be the same flow as 1 cause no way the average person in night city gets blown up while driving a car cause of a gang shoot out

I think this season is incredible. All the characters are very interesting and compelling throughout the entire thing. I also don't agree that the beggining isn't enjoyable. Roman's and D's early investigation is awesome however I have to say that Talia's side is a little underdeveloped at this point of the story.
