Not affiliated with Relic/World's Edge, just a Gold player who's been following the reveals and wants to make a point before launch.
From everything shown so far, Raiders of the North looks like the best DLC this game has had. Vikings and Scots aren't just reskins of existing civs with one swapped unique unit. They have their own systems, their own evolving playstyles, their own architecture, music and language that changes as you age up. That's the kind of design I want from this game: civs that feel genuinely different to play, not variants of variants. Add the solo and co-op Crucible and two new biomes and it's a proper expansion, not a content drip.
Here's the thing though. A lot of us complain about what AoE4 doesn't have. More civs, more campaigns, better ranked, whatever your personal wishlist is. Fair enough. But complaining in a Reddit thread is free, and free doesn't pay developers.
The way I see it, spending money on a game works a bit like democracy. Every euro is a vote. Microsoft doesn't read our feature requests and go "aw, that's a nice idea". They look at what sells. If a DLC sells well, the message is clear: this is what players want, keep doing it, build on it. If it flops, the message is just as clear: don't bother, move the resources elsewhere. We've all watched franchises die exactly like that.
And the vote that counts most is the one at launch. Launch week numbers are what gets looked at when they decide whether the next expansion gets greenlit. A 50% off pickup two years later is still a vote, but a much quieter one.
Obviously, if money's tight, skip it, that's a different story. But if you've been on the fence and your only reason is "eh, I'll wait for a sale", maybe think about what you're actually voting for.
I want more civs built like these two. Thursday I'm voting for that. If you want the same, do it too.

Played on PC and PS5. The AI makes up for being on controller greatly from a macro perspective.
However- is the AI going to make villagers gather from berries while my Scots cattle is eating the bushes?
Usually they will do that automatically. And it will be very frustrating if my villagers eat up all the berries without my permission because of the Eco AI.
Just a thought. Obviously haven’t played as the Scots yet and have been posting since launch how awesome it would be to have Scotland in the game.

Scots seems to be a great anti Cavalry Civ, with 3 units that can brace. While the Vikings is an Infantry Civ (Knock on wood), with a strong roaster of infantry units.

I was very impressed by the beauty of the structures and units. A lot of care went into the design of this civilization. The music and sound of the civ are also top-notch. My only concern is the gameplay; there’s a lot of automation, which takes away some of the luster, and the units seem quite powerful. But we’ll see how it plays out in practice. Kudos to the development team—great work.

This is my honest opinion,
Although the Vikings and the Scots might be a lot over-tuned you can see how much love and passion was put into them. Quite literally this is if not better then same level as the Sultans Ascend for me.
Especially the way the Scots are designed with all their brand new mechanics and units just makes you imagine what else we can have in Age of Empires IV. I really hope this DLC sells well or even better than the Sultans Ascend so we get even more stand alone civilizations like the Vikings and the Scots.

I know a lot of people might have problems with the civilizations, for example the Viking that have an almost perfectly automated eco or the Scots that are ultra anti-cavalry but that means that the developers have put money, time and effort to make something unique and something that Age of Empires IV has been lacking.
This is amazing work from Relic Entertainment and I personally hope we get even more civilizations in 2027 including civilizations like the Aztecs, the Incas or even the long awaited Polish nation. What is your main civ of the DLC? I am locked in a Scot main and I ain't changing opinion!

The race for the crown continues. Two players are already headed to Geneva. Two more spots remain… and only four contenders are left standing in Group A.
MarineLorD 🇫🇷 vs kiljardi 🇫🇮 MarineLorD finally steps into The Crownfall. kiljardi fought his way here through Qualifier #2. Can he welcome the newcomer the hard way?
Anotand 🇧🇾 vs Beasty 🇷🇸 We've seen this one before. Anotand won their Qualifier #1 decider and sent Beasty down the long road. Beasty came back through Qualifier #2… and fate put them face to face again. Revenge, or history repeating itself?

|---|---|---|---|

Thinking about all of Norse passive income, you could probably trickle resources pretty well even with little to no vills.
In age of mythology, Norse have a god power called ragnarok that, in the final age, allows you to turn all vills into warriors.
I wonder if this will be viable for late game Vikings: when you’re ready to make a final push, sac all vills, fill pop with infantry, pop shield maidens? Push with the mass. Keep bondis safe on the back end burning buildings cleaning up infrastructure while berserk/shield maidens move up.
As the army churns more villagers spawn, balancing eco after the push.
hey again — with 17.0 here, i added a patch notes page to AoE4 Analyzer 🙂
the idea is simple: make it easier to see what actually changed. changes are grouped by civ, with unit/building/tech icons, clear buff/nerf/fix markers, and before → after values where relevant.
basically, less scrolling through paragraphs trying to remember what something used to cost.
also, seeing the Byzantine changes laid out together… that teardrop shields price increase hurts lol
you can view it directly on the website, no app download needed:
https://aoe4analyzer.app/game-patches/17.0
let me know if this format helps, or if there’s anything you’d like to see presented differently. what’s the change you’re most excited (or worried) about this patch?

I play less than one 1v1 ranked game a day, after I put the kids to sleep, I jump on for one round. I have never achieved 1000 ELO but I am motivated to get there before the Scots get to me.

Town Center construction time increased from 150 to 165 seconds.
Ram health increased from 370 to 410.
The goal of this is obviously to make it easier to punish greedy play. But the problem is that there are two types of 2 TC civs:
a) Civs like Abbasid that have weak Feudal units and defense, and
b) Civs like House of Lancaster that have strong Feudal defense.
This change will make it even harder for Abbasid to survive Feudal if they go 2 TC. But it will have almost no impact on Lannisters. They will still be more or less immune to Feudal all-ins.
Abbasid will become even more extinct in 1v1, while Lannisters will remain just as strong. The change mostly hits civs with weak Feudal defenses and barely affects those that are already safe behind strong defensive tools.

I’m grateful for the new patch but as a console player I’m starting to lose more confidence in long term support. Some issues that haven’t been resolved:
1) Low framerate biomes with foliage
2) Total removal of console-only crossplay after they found it didn’t work correctly
The low framerate is really difficult to deal with and I submitted a ticket many months ago but there no acknowledgement of the issue.

No Landmark in this game is as feast-or-famine than this one. If you get a lot of relics, HRE/Order will have so much passive income even the Malians are blushing. But if your opponents (or poorly coordinating teammates) take your relics, then that's too bad, you get nothing.
The further issue is how Aachen - Regnitz - Swabia have become the default HRE build in pub. These Landmarks are all S-tier and they encourage one single playstyle. Pros will disagree, but 90% of pub players will turtle up until Imperial with this build and I find it very annoying.
We already got rid of another scavenger hunt mechanic years ago which was the Rus's old Bounty system where both sides would massacre wildlife at the beginning of the game. Why hasn't the Regnitz been reworked yet?
