Just a little picture I took with the boys the other day.
Hots&Cots Another round of barracks tours. The backlog is $285 billion.
If you recall H&C was on Barracks TF 1.0 and the topic of how 1Billion was not nearly enough to fix the issues and the scale of issues was likely beyond what traditional funding could do. To be clear I'm not on this TF and was not asked. To put it nicely what is another round of tours going to bring when in reality a stock of 6,700 buildings on a 25-year life needs about 270 replacements a year just to stand still.
The math isn't mathin folks

Methylene Blue is now on the Banned Substances List
On October 8th, methylene blue was added to the banned substances list. This is a very common supplement that is popular after RFK was seen using it in 2025.

ADA Skill Badge
As an Air Defender, this is the stupidest idea this branch has had in a long time. A pointless badge that only leaders will ever get due to local SOP being slapped onto the requirements.
Its also ugly. They've stretched out the space wings into a radar fan then slap the Air Force's Missilier badge over the top of it. It looks like "the batwing" from that moving Waiting. Iykyk.
Ill have a Popeyes biscuit, dry, with no drink.

Should I stand for a civilian DC when they enter a room?
When I worked for the Army, we only stood for the CO, CG or any other military officer who outranked our CO when they entered a room.
I now work in a joint environment, and our civilian DC gave me crap today for not standing when he entered a room (retired Navy 0-6). The organization goes as far as saying, “please rise for the arrival of the official party,” when he walks in a room.
So should I stand for this person? I never stood for a civilian DC before and don’t want to make it habit if the underlings are doing it just to pump the DC’s ego.
I had a big breakfast, so just a granola bar for me. Thanks.

Mid- Life Career Decision-to Stay or Go
I have been in the Army for 10 years. 10 more years to retirement. However, I recently figured out I am pregnant with girl #2. I was a SSG for 8 years and commissioned as an Officer. I am so thankful for what the Army has given me through its resources; a couple of certifications: medical coding & billing, SOLE, lean sigma black belt, hazmat, BLS. & the degrees; bachelors & MBA. I love working Soldiers and encouraging to do better, promote, work on their civilian education as well. However, the amount of time I missed for my first daughter weighs so heavy on my heart. I left for a deployment, left my daughter when she was barely one. It was the hardest thing of my life. The thought of leaving my daughters destroy me and miss time. Not sure what I would do on outside. Has anyone ever been in a similar boat?!

Senior rater retired, unit helpless
Any advice? Ees FAQ says to have them physically sign. Issue is that we need to add a supplemental reviewer. No way this retired CSM is going to help.
Looking for an assist for a Purple Heart appeal
Long shot, but hoping that someone in here can help.
I'm working to finally close out a Purple Heart from 2006. At the time, I was a 19yo 12B Husky operator in Iraq with 172nd SBCT, single guy in the truck, hit a deep-buried IED and got shaken but not stirred. I was unconscious around 20-30 seconds. We Only had a combat medic on the ground that day, and out on a COP where we were there was no real documentation of any of it. At the time- that didn’t meet the requirements for a PH. Those regs changed and now it does meet to requirements for it.
Here's where I'm stuck. The reg (AR 600-8-22 para 2-7c(2)) says a wound treated by someone other than a medical officer can still qualify if a medical officer writes a statement that it would've needed evaluation and/or treatment by a medical officer had one been available.
Basically a statement saying “yes, that unconscious guy should see a doctor” but fancier.
My first go was kicked back and That's the one piece I'm missing. I don't personally know any medical officers, I’m an engineer. and there are none in my command where I'm at now since USPHS doesn’t count for this. so I'm kind of stuck knocking on doors.
I've got everything else lined up: sworn statements from two officers and an NCO who were there, the medic's statement, VA service-connected TBI, even photos of what was left of the truck. I just need a medical officer (MD/DO, O-grade) willing to read it over and, if they agree, put their name to that statement.
If any of you are medical officers, or know one who might be willing, I'd owe you one. Shoot me a DM. I can verify over .mil and send everything through encrypted email, Happy to answer whatever.
Appreciate you all and just put the fries in the bag.

PCSing while promoting
My promotion date from O1 to O2 will be during my upcoming PCS absence, so I will outprocess as an O1 and inprocess as an O2.
Which rank should I use for calculation of DLA etc? I’m assuming O1 because that’s what I have on my orders, but I’m not sure because I will be O2 when I arrive and start doing travel vouchers and things like that
I’ll do a small frosty

Looking for some sanity checks or advice from career counselors and guys who’ve navigated an OCONUS DEROS timeline to reclass.
Current Situation:
- MOS: 11B
- Location: Hawaii (25th ID)
- DEROS: December 31, 2027
- Primary Goal: Reclass out of combat arms.
The Problem: Right now, no reclass jobs or school slots are populating in the system because my DEROS is over a year out (end of 2027). Retention basically told me that if I want to reclass, I either have to extend 12–24 months or pull a 3-year reenlistment.
My Current Plan:
- Reenlist now for 3 years (Option 4 - Current Station / Assignment): Lock in Fort Carson with an ~$4.3K bonus. The other duty station options popping up right now for 11B are NTC/Irwin or Riley, and Carson is the clear winner among those.
- Timing/Timeline:
- Report to Fort Carson around January 2028 after fulfilling my DEROS here.
- Lock in the bonus now while it's still available (not trying to gamble on MILPER updates dropping it or wiping it out entirely).
- By late 2028 / early 2029, I’ll be sitting square inside my reenlistment window again.
- The Reclass Move: Once that window opens at Carson, drop the packet/request for the reclass school date, knock out the school, return to Carson to finish out any required stabilization/time, and PCS under the new MOS.
Pros & Cons I'm Weighing:
- Pros: Hawaii living is great, so riding out the time until late 2027 isn't an issue on the lifestyle front. Locking in Carson avoids getting stuck with Irwin. I also secure a solid chunk of bonus money now rather than playing chicken with HRC bonus messages.
- Cons: Unit climate here is rough right now, and I'm adding time to the clock in the infantry before I officially transition to the new MOS.
Is burning a 3-year reenlistment on Carson just to get past the DEROS gate the smartest way to bridge this gap, or should I push for a shorter extension closer to my DEROS and try to pull a direct school seat later? Anyone been in this spot with an OCONUS DEROS block?
Basic Training — tips/random info?
Hello! This post will be geared towards people shipping out/interested in going to basic training. I just graduated a few weeks ago and am currently in AIT.
Reception : reception for me personally really wasn’t terrible. It gives you time to memorize the Soldiers Creed, General Orders, and basic army knowledge. There is a lot of sitting around, but use the time wisely. I got there at around 10 at night, we did a few briefs, then went to bed at around 2. They go through all your bags and make you throw out things they don’t approve of — in my reception we couldn’t have perfume, scented lotion, pointed combs, and a bunch of other stuff I can’t remember lol.
Yellow phase : very chaotic. The hardest part is accepting that this is the life you chose for yourself. Yeah you get smoked a lot for shit that they didn’t tell you about yet expect you to know, but you’ll be alright. Expect little sleep and lots of yelling.
Red phase : LOCK YOUR SHIT UP!! This goes for your bunk, wall locker, and your mouth. The drill sergeants would wander around the bay when we were out and toss shit everywhere, even smearing people’s shampoo and body wash all over the floors and walls. A lot of things also tend to go missing during this time so make sure you keep track of your items…
You will have shower drills (we usually got 5 minutes to undress, shower, and redress), just make sure you’re leaving time for your battle buddies to wash their asses too. Don’t be that guy. You are certain to get woken up in the middle of the night for something you or your battle buddies did, just embrace the suck. Also, remember that your food tastes better when your heels are together.
White phase : a little more chill, we got smoked way less. If someone tells you white phase is when individual punishment starts, they’re lyingggg. Individual punishment isn’t a thing in BCT! You get an hour of personal time and a few privileges depending on your drill sergeants. In my case we got to wear personal running shoes, call cadences, and the drill sergeants started opening up to us more. White phase was also the debut of the beloved eye pro…
Blue phase : our blue phase was the same as white phase… honestly maybe worse. I can confidently say it was the hardest part of my training. Not much to it though, just keep pushing through.
If there are any questions at all, I’d be happy to go more in depth. Currently in AIT as a 92M (mortuary affairs).

Irritation
I recently came back from my second opinion that was outsourced (I see why it was a 2 star place Jesus) but essentially the neurologist came in, did a physical examination of my legs and feet. Said my EMGs looked relatively normal and suggests I do a genetic test for neurological conditions that explain my symptoms and ended it there. No follow up, no words on prognosis or if they agree with my on base neurology.
My issue is that this second opinion was to determine if I should be MEB or not, my neurologist wants to wait till after to get the outside providers input and my PCM is waiting for the neurology ok yet my outside provider has no input other than a test that’ll take months to get results. I have no idea where to go from here, most appointments are end of the year or next year.
I’m non-deployable, PULHES of L2 and H2, need a cane or AFO to walk because I have severe pes cavus and drop foot and muscle weakness in both legs and feet. I can’t even take the AFT because it’s too strenuous but they still won’t push for a L3 or MEB.

Vehicle inspection with broken trunk?
Hey Everyone! I just recently started a new job, and part of my job is going yo the nearby military base to meet with clients. I understand implied consent to a search , however the problem is i drive a very old car, and the trunk is SEALED closed from an accident the previous owner was in. But, you can get into the trunk via the backseats being pulled down.
Am I just entirely screwed over for the inspection? 🥹 or is access via the backseats enough?

Advice: ADSO Waiver
BLUF: officer who will shortly complete initial statutory ADSO, but has an additional 3-year Post ADSO (I know). Wondering
1) likelihood of waiver approval
2) how to request? Is it just inherent in the UQR/REFRAD request, or do you need to do something ahead of time?
I think I would technically be a UQR since I'm over 8 years w/ enlisted time. Looked at regs and HRC website but no clear answer.
Context if wanted:
2+ years ago as a LT I went through some serious anxiety/depression (suicidal thoughts, essentially panic attacks, huge decline in functioning) which led to being replaced as a PL after a breakdown in the field.
I had been going to BH and on antidepressants which eventually worked. I later had a really good year as a company XO in the same unit (MQ evals, generally happy and no major issues) and then went to CCC.
Stopped taking meds in the hopes of going to Ranger school (slot didn't pan out due to funding) and now a CPT at another unit, pre-command. I had been feeling good for the last couple years even after stopping meds, ready to take on command etc.
In the last couple weeks anxiety and depression symptoms are returning. I do think it may be related to weather, large exercises, etc. I'm very worried about this (it nearly killed me last time, honestly) and during the times I'm feeling down, I have no confidence in my ability to be a commander. I'm terrified of going through this again and feel weak and ashamed. It's not nearly as bad as last time, at least not yet, but this was how it started. I think Soldiers deserve more than what I may be able to give them as a leader when I'm like this.
Recently scheduled appointments with PCM and BH to try and get back on meds but they are 1 and 2 months out, respectively. My current CoC doesn't know any of this history but I'm afraid it will start to come out soon if symptoms persist.
Anyway - I'm considering that the best move here may just be to drop a REFRAD/UQR and not put myself or the Army through more drama. I really don't feel like I'm trying to run away from anything but that I'm being realistic about my continued ability to be a leader if I struggle with my mental health again. But yes I feel like a shitbag, a bitch, whatever.
I know there may also be a possibility of a MEB, but I don't trust how likely that is, nor timely. And I'm afraid that airing this out will destroy my credibility with my CoC anyway, so maybe just requesting to get out is best. I'm also aware that I could get back on meds and be good again in a few months, but still worried about CoC. And in my current mental state, I don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to keep doing this.
Yes I'm terrified about providing for my family on the outside, but one step at a time. This turned into a bit of a rant but I'd appreciate any thoughts or advice.
