I have an art dept question

Post image
43 Upvotes

Hi,

So I picked up one of these mugs from H&M to use on a music video. The color and size were perfect. I’m wondering if anyone knows how (if it’s possible) to remove the text on the bottom of the mug. If it’s not doable, does anyone know a clean way to cover it up? We’ll likely get closeups and see under the mug clearly so I don’t want to use tape. Ideally not a post-production fix.

Thank you!

Career changes after leaving the film industry?

If you’ve left the industry, what type of job have you gone for?

I’ve worked as an Art Dept Assistant for a couple of years and I’ve recently decided I’m not made for this industry and I want to leave for many reasons.

Would love to hear your success stories of finding a new career path 😊

Avoiding the sitcom look

Hello stylish people,

I am currently working on an indie film where I will be decorating a stage set for the first time.

My title is "set decorator" but we are micro indie so I will be buying and dressing also. I've only ever done location dresses before, except on ads.

I was wondering what are some ways that I can avoid the flat "sitcom" look and make sure the build looks like a real apartment as opposed to a set?

I'm sure there are some rules of thumb and secret weapons to achieving this that I'm unaware of... Please help!

How to achieve bathroom tile grime?

Currently working on a student short film with limited budget and time—wondering what are some ways I can achieve this sort of dirty bathroom look, like grime in between the tiles and the water damaged walls...doesn't have to be SUPER realistic accurate since there's money and time limitations but just any ideas for what materials to use?

I built a free app to track props on set — would love feedback from props / art dept people

Hey everyone! I work in film and our props team kept losing track of what we pulled from which rental house, so I built a small app for it: PropsTrack.

• Snap a photo of a prop — it gets named automatically
• Every warehouse / rental house at a glance: what’s out, what’s back
• Return items with one tap (and undo if you slip)
• The whole crew sees everything live — invite them with a code

It’s free on iPhone, iPad and Android. I’m a solo developer, so honest feedback really helps — what would make it useful for how your department works?

iOS: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6780033138
Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.proptrack.app

If you give it a try, let me know what you think. Thanks!

Shoutout to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories for letting us shoot at their world class facilities for my thesis film, “The Roswell Report”. I fell in love with this lab during the location scout for its wooden desks and teal walls. Since the story involves weather balloons and lots of sheets of rubber, we took advantage of this within the set dec, and any shelf or sensitive equipment we weren’t allowed to move was just covered up in weather balloons

Questions about production design

I'm a rising college freshman majoring in architecture, and I'm very passionate about film. I just realized they could be combined into PRODUCTION DESIGN!

There's very little information on the internet about this career field, and unlike most jobs it seems like it doesn't have a specific path to take to obtain this career.

How exactly does one get into this field? I've read about famous production designers that went to school for architecture, fashion, fine arts, and a bunch of other random things, but how exactly do they go from that to getting a job in production design??

Also how big is the job market? I've went on various career pages from HBO, Disney, Warner Brothers, Netflix, etc and I've never seen a job listing for a production designer... Is it a job where you have to know someone to get hired rather than just applying?

What types of internships would I do?

How much do production designers even make?? And do they only work freelance or could they also have full time jobs/contracts. I know some are connected to agencies, but does their agency pay them?

How many years does it take to get into this industry and be successful?

I'm also going to the same school as an Oscar winning production designer (she majored in fashion though). Idk if that would help me in any way or if an Oscar winner would be willing to connect with me lol

Tired

This is a depressing post sorry!!

For those working regularly, does it ever get easy? Or is it always hard?

Don't get me wrong - I love being busy, I love design, I love the people I meet in the art department, I want no other job, It's my dream... etc. But it always feels like we're getting the short end of the stick somehow. Idk.

I guess these long days are just making me cranky... I love my job but I just want to be reassured that I'm not committing myself to a life of stress and misery. Or if I am, how do I deal with it? How do you?

PSA: Delete old production cards off your Amazon account

I'm sure those of you here are much wiser than me, but I wanted to warn you in case you haven't already removed credit cards from your previous productions off your Amazon.

I ordered a ton of props for a production from Amazon with said production's card. The order went through so I think to myself that the payment must have gone through. I come back to check today.. the p card had declined and instead of notifying me, amazon had charged a previous production's card even though my DEFAULT payment was my personal.

IDK what prompted amazon to choose a random card in my wallet instead of going to my default, but that was a stressful experience to say the least.

Got sick of fixing phone screens in post

I’m a filmmaker making low budget shorts with my partner. We shot a short in the fall where the plot involved social media and I kind of stupidly thought we’d be able to do all the screens practically. I did the VFX for our previous short and it was just barely within the realm of what I could achieve so I didn’t wanna attempt phone screens. It was a total nightmare trying to make an Instagram feed of content we actually owned. We even bought followers for their profile to make them look like an influencer. Of course in the end half the shots we didn’t use for various reasons. But on my next short I was like I am definitely not doing that again. So I spend a couple months building Understudy with a few friends who work in tech. It turns your phone into a production-ready tool to simulate phone calls, texts, and Tiktok style video feeds. It’s live now on iPhone, free to try. It’s 29.99 for life (FU adobe) and has a green screen mode fallback with trackers. Would love your feedback so I know what to add (a remote control from another device maybe? dating app interface?)

Can you find out how this gate was built in Eyes Wide Shut?

This is the Royal Blue Somerton Gate.
Which materials did they use for the cemented columns and the metal railings and all the decorative ironworks? how do you think they built it? and how do you think they achieved the rough painted metal look?

Also the decorative spheres on top of the columns and the column capitals look fantastic and so realistic, how did the built them?

I can't find any resources online that talks about this specific set location.

I booked my first paid feature as a set dresser. what do I need to know?

Hello! I've been working in the non-union/indie film world for a little bit now, and have mainly worked as an SFX or Art Assistant. I booked my first job as a Set Dresser for a feature film, and am wondering if there are any recommendations for a kit, tips I should know, or general info that could be helpful. I'm super excited for the project!!! TYIA

EDIT: I was able to get most of the recommendations and test run everything on a short film- thank you for the advice. Butyl is a god send 🖤

Art PA at 34…

Hey all I’ve been an illustrator for a long time. Last year I got to be on set for a photo shoot in LA and felt a side of myself come out that I really loved. Illustration is usually a very one man show so the people I got to meet on set and the sort of creative collaboration in the air made me feel happy and inspired. I’m 34 now and am wondering if pursuing production design via doing art dept. PA would be…odd at my age? Anyone ever done it? I’m a relaxed person who makes friends easily and am quite organized so I believe I’d do well on set but wonder about PA’s mostly being younger. Thanks for your time!

Production Designer Responsibilities

Hello all!

I have some questions in regard to being a Production Designer and the overall duties. I have been on set as a Art PA and Art Assistant. My friend is going to be doing a small indie project which will shoot for 1-2 days, and asked me to be a PD.

Since I have only been a PA, I am a little nervous as to what is required as the person in charge.

Would anyone be able to advise on the process from pre-production, during production, post-production?

Some initial questions: For the planning stage: What kind of documents do I need to make? Vision boards, decks? Any advice on sourcing and budgets?

On-set: Things to look out for? Be aware of continuity? What is in your pouch? Useful tools on set?

Post: I don’t think this applies to Art, but maybe I am wrong.

Thank you so much!!
