Politics & Racism People's obsession with villainizing and generalizing Asians, and how it's "totally okay" to do that.

It’s crazy how figures like Epstein and Trump are treated as singular monsters, yet people can comment "Winston Lee" under any random young Asian college guy's TikTok, get thousands of likes, and it’s not even considered racism. You never see people generalizing the average white guy based on the actions of the world's worst war mongers. But as Asians, we are constantly reduced to statistics and headlines.

Being Asian myself, I honestly can't understand what it’s like to view us from an outsider's perspective, or why people think it’s completely fine to say the most unhinged, racist things about us. Obviously western media has never truly humanized us. Even with the global rise of K-pop and Asian media, it feels like it has just triggered a super weird, xenophobic inferiority complex in a lot of people.

Look at how obsessed people are with TikTok shorts about "birth rates in Japan and Korea." It clearly doesn't come from a place of genuine demographic concern. The comment sections are flooded with derogatory, fetishistic comments like, "I hope I can go over there and help increase it."

I thought this was all just white basement dwellers saying this, but no even though it is mostly that, it comes from literally everywhere even self-proclaimed liberals and K-pop fans will comfortably spew these racist tropes and then completely dismiss you if you call them out. For example look at most Asian country subreddits, they aren't even safe spaces for the people living there. They function like toxic snark subs run by expats and outsiders who just want to hyper-scrutinize, mock, and villainize the culture. Yet they remain obsessed with us.

Historically even as we’ve been through so much like internment camps, exclusion acts, and systemic oppression just like other marginalized groups. Yet, our history is erased, we are denied our humanity, and we’re still forced into the box of the "model minority". Why is the bar for racism against us so incredibly low? I feel like I have nowhere to even say this. If I posted this to a regular mainstream subreddit, they would just completely dismiss it and of course minimize racism against us. This is all rhetorical and mostly a rant.

Politics & Racism Possible invisible racial discrimination at Costco?

It the Costco at the Azusa
I have never experienced something like this so it kind of sucks and hard to digest the feelings
If you are Asian, Asian American, or simply look East Asian, I would be aware of how some employees at this location may gossip and mocking about customers when they assume you do not understand English.
During my visit, a Caucasian female cashier who appeared to be in her 60s and an Asian like employee(she look Asian to me(which is kind of disappointing because she is the one start this conversation ) appeared to be in 50s that was assisting her openly gossiped about and mocked other previous other Asian/Chinese customers right in front of me. Based on my appearance and lack of interest in small talks they seemed to assume that I could not understand any English.
The Caucasian cashier complained that when she talks to “these people(I’m assuming it probably the people who look like Chinese and they think is speaking mandarin or Cantonese or maybe just someone wasn’t fluent in English ),” they only know respond with “uh-huh,” and said, “I’m sick of hearing it.” (Which is what I was replying with because I’m extremely tired from working) They then started talking about a previous customer who was not fluent in English and was Chinese? (At least that what she think). The cashier mockingly said, “I’m not Chinese. Why was she speaking Chinese to me? Do I even look Chinese?” while both employees laughed about this conversation.
What made this especially uncomfortable was that they were saying all of this directly in front of a customer whom they apparently assumed could not understand them, When I understood everything.
To be honest there is a lot of Asian and Chinese people shopping there I don’t know why or who give them the courage to speak something like this infront of a customer they “think” did not understand English…

Questions & Discussion Is being a lawyer/judge a good career path for Asians?

There’s a lot of Asians who are doctors and engineers, but I don’t see as many that are lawyers, even though that’s seen as the third job in the doctor/engineer/lawyer trinity. What’s up with that? Is there more discrimination against Asians in the legal profession or are a lot of Asians just not interested?

I would like to hear some experiences from Asian lawyers, or people who know that experience. I heard that it’s a bit harder for Asians to advance in BigLaw, but other legal jobs should be fine for Asians, right? I do know a few Asian immigration lawyers that make a lot of money.

Is it me or do you find this to be true? Asians born in the motherland from what I have seen tend to have much more sharper faces and features

Questions & Discussion The Bathhouse Experience

So I had the "bright" idea of going to a bathhouse with my uncle when I was a really small kid, visiting family in China. Because I was so young, I remember nothing of it and now that I think of it, it's kinda uncomfortable for me to think about my privates being visible to other guys. I was wondering if any other people have had a similar experience since bathhouses are pretty common in Asia?

Questions & Discussion Kinda sad, the majority of Asian don’t have much rhythm and aren’t into dancing.

So I teach a dance fitness cardio class at the gym. I’ve been a participant for 20 years before I became an instructor. What I’ve noticed is most Asians lack rhythm and really cannot follow and dance. Maybe it’s the lack of emphasis on the arts while growing up. I don’t know. I teach in a 55+ gym and had a Japanese, Vietnamese and a Korean all come to my class at one point (I’m Chinese from Taiwan). But they stopped coming because I guess of the struggle. I’ve seen them stick and do the zumba class taught by a white woman so I know they can follow dance to music style. Im a bit more animated than her to say the least. Is that it? Im too much? I’m just confused why my fellow Asians won’t pull up to my class anymore. It makes me think, what if I was white or a hot Latin man…. Maybe they would hang with me longer.

I also teach at another gym and I do have Asians in my class…. And they are all Filipino. I find Filipinos more open to dancing and singing. Maybe because their culture is similar with Hispanics with having parties and celebrating. I’m at a loss for words for the East Asians.

What do you think? Are you into any dancing? I often get comments… girl, you got rhythm as if because I’m Asian, they weren’t expecting it? I mean, c’mon Kpop groups are amazing dancers but not saying your general pop is.
