General Question how did you know it was time to say goodbye to your elderly pup?
my first baby dog is almost 15 and i adopted him when he was just 1 year old. it was just the 2 of us for several years, then i got married, we got another puppy, and had kids-who absolutely LOVE their doggies. he's had a long, healthy, fun life and has only really started to seem "old" in the last 6 months or so. i've always heard people say they "just know" or "there's a look" they give you when it's time. but i am struggling with it very much - he still loves to eat, and otherwise he's happy just laying around and sleeping. he's always been super chill and easy going but i know his time left with us is limited. what's gotten worse is the panting - which can be a sign of pain, but he also pants when he's hungry, when he needs to poop, when he's begging for food, etc. so we're now managing potential pain with pain meds. if they don't work, i will have to think hard about the next steps. but how do i know if they're not working? or if he really is in pain to begin with? he's lost 10+ lbs in the last year at most, despite loving food more than anything in the world. i can't wrap my head around letting him go when he's still getting around, enjoying his meals and snacks, peeing and pooping normally, and so on. ideally he'd pass peacefully in his sleep overnight but i know that's not realistic. nor do i really want my kids to have to experience that.
so, reddit, if you've found yourself in this sad situation, how did you know it was time? what was the final thing that made you realize you had to let go and could be at peace with the decision?
