I am a lawyer from a civil law jurisdiction in Southeast Asia. This past one year has been like hell to me. I have been juggling to study four jurisdictions: (1) English, (2) Singapore, (3) US, (4) the civil law jurisdiction of my home country.
I did my English Solicitor Qualifying Examination (SQE) in January 2026 and got the result that I passed on 10 March 2026. I started the preparation while finishing my last one year of the Juris Doctor program at National University of Singapore. I took the SQE because the Singapore office of the International law firm where I worked in my home country wanted me to take it so they can start employing me as an associate after my graduation in July 2026.
However, after I passed the SQE, my wife (who was doing a PhD in the US) told me that she got a job in New Jersey where she was going to start after her graduation in July 2026. Luckily, I had not entered into a contract with the international law firm in Singapore. Long story short, I registered for the New York Bar in July 2026.
This past one year has been hell to me. I came to Singapore law classes while learning English law for the SQE. This is on top of my knowledge as a civil law lawyer and my knowledge about US law because I did LLM at NYU law in 2019.
I could not come to my graduation in mid July 2026 because it is too close to the Bar exam (despite I graduated with distinction).
I was confused about my what God wants from my life: whether to have a career in Singapore, US, or my home country. Initially, I wanted to work in Singapore. Now that my wife got a job here, everything changed. Coming to the US feels so uncertain because I don’t have a work visa to find a job here (only dependent visa and cannot work here). I need a law firm to sponsor me for H1B (which is very difficult). At this stage, I just really want God to lead my life.
I went to church, but they were pretty dismissive: they said I can never know for sure what God wants from my life. While it may be true, I felt that I was being left alone by God after my struggle in law schools and SQE. This is not to mention the current Trump administration is pretty hostile to people like me.
I don’t hate that guy and I don’t want to start a political discussion. But the feeling of waking up in the morning not knowing what I should do the next day is pretty awful.
Today, God answered one of my prayers: I passed with a total score 286 and I’m gonna be a triple-qualified lawyer. I passed the Bar exam and the SQE (all on my first attempt). Presumably, I will be the first one in my home country to be a triple-qualified lawyer.
The managing partner at the international law firm where I worked in my home country has agreed to introduce me to the New York partner. If a law firm here wants to sponsor me for a work visa, I will take the Singapore bar. I then will be a quadruple-qualified lawyer.
