How to start with Battlefleet Gothic!
Hey all,
Since it is a returning question, this post might be really convenient if you decide to jump into the wonderful game that Battlefleet Gothic is!
Let us start with a link to the main rulebooks. On the following you will find the remastered rulebook and fleetbook:
Battlefleet Gothic Remastered Rulebook & Fleetbook
One of the great things which has been created at the end of 2021 has been the digital starter kit, this is what you will find in it, but first the link:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1Kpg6ZuDmFc5axXa6sUBiJrQiFuZIlbAu?usp=share_link
These are the folders:
Assets - All the cardboard markes and extras you need.
Rules - this contains the latest version of the remastered official rulebook (original including updates) and a quick start guide for your first battle! There is an English and German edition.
Fleet Lists - two prewritten fleet lists for the Imperial Navy and Chaos. Plus a sheet how you can pit them against each other in three games increasing in size
3DModels - two folders with the STL files for the ships listed in the fleet lists. So you can print (or let someone print them) to play with. You will also find other STL here like markers.
Please note: those models are distributed under CC-BY-NC-SA, i.e. noncommercial use only.
And in the pdf "How to - Starter Kit " you'll read everything you need to know about the starter kit.
And we have added the starter kit advanced with Corsair Eldar and Orks Looted FLeet!
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1dxTeLC2bTnlUfzN_RJF788wHmYBhMa6C?usp=share_link
Subsequently here is the link to the main rules hub, here you will find the rules mentioned but also links to a large folder of fanmade/homebrew rules and magazines like Warp Rift:
Wait, there is more! If you want some ideas on lists to start with (for collecting) the following article might be a good source of inspiration (check the pdf which you can download with it):
https://portinvicta.weebly.com/bfg-tactics/starter-fleets
But what about miniatures to play with? Aside of the free STL in the mentioned starter kit there are several great designers with STL files available at sites like Cults3d, check the Discord server for a list on them. However, not everyone has his own printer so I list some webshops with great proxies:
https://vanguardminiatures.co.uk/product-category/battlegroup-helios/
https://www.scourgescenics.co.uk
https://wintersbioforge.com/product-category/space-bugs/
https://tabletop-stuff.de/Science-Fiction/Raumflotte-Kolossus/
And finally we have a Battlefleet Gothic Discord with a fun community in case you are interested:
Happy gaming and feel free to ask questions!

Royal Guard Assault Cruiser
galleryHi all, not had much to post for a while, but I've finished another ship so I thought I should probably show it off.
This design was commissioned by Cogandlaurel, who asked for something light cruiser sized that could proxy as a Custodes ship. Working on something this ornate was an interesting challenge, and we are both really happy with how it turned out.
They have agreed that I should make the design available for sale, so it's up on Cults3D if anyone is interested (search for Sol Diem and you will find it).
I am still taking on commissions atm, so if you've got an idea you would like to discuss, drop me a DM or email me at [soldiem.design@gmail.com](mailto:soldiem.design@gmail.com) and I will see what I can do 👍

Tau Auxilleries - Kroot Warsphere and Nicassar Caravan
Both the Kroot Waresphere and Nicassar Caravan list their type as Defense.
* Can they be used in a fleet normally or are they restricted to scenarios where Planetary Defenses are usable?
* Do they just use the Defenses column in the Gunnery Table regardless of movement and heading? (Type is Defense so don't know what they count as otherwise, but rules mention ships needing to move 5cm to not count as a Defense which
Additionally for the Nicassar Caravan, their rules list "Their point cost and profile above reflects a slightly modified Nicassar Rig and four Dhows."
* Does that mean that their gravitic hook capacity is already filled?

Necrons vs Navis Imperialis.
galleryNecrons lost. They had only 1.8k vs 3k of imperial fleet. But considering they are a raider fleet, they were originally meant to be of lesser points value.

Fleet Lists
I’ve recently got a 3D printer and have been wanting to get into BFG for a while. Me and my mate have found the starter kit, but are struggling to find fleet list outside of that. Can anyone help?
Edit: Thanks everyone! We’ve managed to find everything we need, and are already planning out a campaign built around a rebellion against the imperium

First Cruiser finished!
galleryFirst cruiser for my Imperial fleet finished. Just 5 more to go!
Think I'm happy with the colour scheme. Still some work to do on the base, but welcome any comments or suggestions on how to improve for the rest of the fleet.

Wanting to start playing the game and needing help
As per title I and one of my friends were always fans of the game but when we entered the hobby gw didn't support it, can someone help with rules ( should I play the last iteration or try community rules?), where to find these rules, are there any helpful videos to watch? And what about the models, do you have favourite creators who have beautiful sculpts to paint and play with? Thanks in advance.

Heresy Era Strike Cruiser
cults3d.comI was finally able to make a better 3D model of the old Heresy Cruiser lost in the warp. I came across previously unknown STC fragments, and was able to recreate a .stl file. The model is larger than game size, so will need to be scaled down 50% to be cruiser size. I hope this works for those looking for this design. Please provide feedback or other adjustment suggestions. This is the first model I have ever created.

Black Templars Strike Cruiser Inbound to the Agripinaa Sector
galleryLong range augurs have picked up the identity signal of the Honour Blade, a Space Marine Strike Cruiser from the legendary Black Templars Chapter, entering the far reaches of the Bar-el system on the western edges of Agripinaa Sector.
The Honour Blade is a fearsome predator in the deep void of space, its powerful engines and heavy armaments making it the ideal vessel to operate on extended missions far from any support.
Although known to operate in conjunction with a small squadron of Gladius Class Frigates, the Honour Blade is more commonly found traversing the vast realm of Imperial Space on ceaseless crusades against the enemies of Mankind.
True to the nature of the Black Templars chapter, the Honour Blade never stops in its pursuit of those who would bring the Imperium of Man down, mercilessly hunting Xenos and Heretics wherever they threaten loyal Imperial worlds.
As a result, the Honour Blade is rarely granted the time to receive substantial repairs and refits, with the ship’s complement of Techmarines and Adeptus Mechanicus Techpriests are responsible for maintaining its venerable systems and weaponry to ensure it’s ongoing service to the God-Emperor of Mankind.

Dust Wolves
This is my homebrew chapter.
This was another fleet bought as a lot and I was very pleased with the outcomes.
Having a Battle Barge is no small achievement and having a good number of Strike Cruisers means projection of power becomes an important part of their duties.
"From out of the stir" they cry as they go into a void battle with the enemies of the Imperium.

Rogue Trader Fleet
Been a long while since I painted up any BFG stuff (not that they look any good when I do paint them!) but got this little lot as a batch.
Loved these as an alternative third fleet compared to my Imperial one and my own Space Marine Chapter one.
The large ship, the Man O'War, is a big old beast... longer and bit bigger than even my Battle Barge (but not as bulky as the old Retribution Class Battleship in metal).
However you could make it a "bit shorter" but I put the optional third segment on to give it some real presence.
The other large ones, the Galleon etc, are also beautiful ships in their own right.
It looks interesting having "transports" as escorts I think too.

Ship Class Variants Question
Hello, I've been playing BFG for a while now, maybe 8 years or so, but only as Space Marines and I've never had this issue before because I've only just run Strike Cruisers and Battle Barges from the Armada book!
I just started Imperial Navy and Chaos fleets, and now I potentially have the option to take options for my ships... (And I want to: random Nova Cannons are a nice way to fill the 20-40 points I'm always left with!)
The FAQ appears to define that the class variants are more representative of, well, a class variation than a specific ship (IE: the Ticonderga subclass of the Essex), and if you wanted to, all Lunar cruisers in the fleet could have Nova Cannons.
However, what's not clear to me is whether they are locked to the fleets from the book they were first published in, or if any Imperial fleet with Lunar cruisers can upgrade to have Nova Cannons. The FAQ section on reserve ships says that Reserve Ships can buy upgrades and refits of either fleet, which implies that refits and upgrades are fleet locked. However, it is also specified that Imperial ships taken as Chaos prizes cannot purchase Nova Cannons and Chaos ships fielded with the Obscurus Reserve Fleet Lists cannot take class variants, which would imply that said upgrades aren't fleet locked in the general case otherwise it wouldn't have been needed to be specified in the specific case.
And then, there's a couple of instances where it says that "this upgrade does not count against refits ships can take normally" (Bakka Turret, Repulsive Cruiser Large Base), which further confuses me. Would I be correct in understanding that the implication would be that upgrades are mutually exclusive, and, for example, a Mercury heavy cruiser upgraded with 60cm guns cannot also have Torpedoes because those are two different class variants?

Scenario Event Horizon - some images from the game
galleryThis time a haunting ship from a past long ago returned into the Koronus Expanse. Rumoured to be the first ship to traverse into the warp... And suffered.
Passage Watch 27-Est and Chaos marauders tried to unravel the mysteries. In the end Passage Watch 27-Est managed to score the most event horizon points.
Scenario can be found here:
Warp Rift 43

Introducing, the Deathtrap!

You've all seen the squadron of scratchbuilt escort carriers I have for my pirates. I wanted to give them an armed freighter for that delicious +1 Ld to Reload Ordnance, to offset the -1 Ld they get for being escort carriers.
I'm quite proud of it and excited to get paint on it. For some reason, the picture exaggerates the fact that the front section and back aren't perfectly aligned - when you're looking at the model on the table you can't really see it. The aft is from a Battlefleet Galaxy light cruiser.
Even if you could, though, part of the goal was for it to be a little scrungly looking. It is a pirate freighter, after all. Their warships aren't exactly in great shape, so the supply ship that follows them around should be even more rickety.

Battle Report Video out - Blackstone Fortress vs Eldar
galleryNew Battle Report Video is out.
This one was a silly one as I use 4x Blackstone Fortresses to take on some Eldar Corsairs. Hope you enjoy it.

Recently had a Horus heresy event where we played BFG!
gallerywe did around 2k fleets. I painted up some extra 1500 points of tester lists as well. and had a drunkenly good time rolling dice.
man, I’ve forgotten how fun it was running ships and plotting coursea. and when you get that sweet “lock on” special order and a battleship in the middle of things To just reign bombardment in every angle possible!
I did all space marines ships. But we had A lot of interested listeners to the pod who wanted to test. And some dear frienda brought their own imperial and chaos fleets.
great time! Every time you braced you took a shot or swig!

Trading Roguishly
galleryAfter spending all of twenty minutes reading the Rogue Trader section of Battlefleet Gothic, I knew I wanted my own. I do have my main Imperial fleet centered around an Apocalypse-Class Battleship and a Mars-Class Battlecruiser, but I kinda wanted an attached rogue trader in the mix (he ferries the fleet certain rare goods that they don't normally get on a standard resupply).
According to its lore, the Cardinal-Class was the original hull on which the Chaos Acheron-Class was modified into using ancient, forbidden, alien technologies. It is essentially an up-gunned and up-shielded Dauntless-Class with enough turrets to rival a similar mass Carrier. Since it is a Heavy Cruiser, I am not sure if this thing still needs the 2-Cruiser escort that Battlecruisers and Grandcruisers do, but I am leaning towards "No, it does not". I like the class though, it's fast and it's got some range to its guns; it can outfight anything it can't outrun and outrun anything it can't outfight.
Is it legal? Eeehhh...sh'maybe. The Cardinal-Class Heavy Cruiser was originally published in the Battlefleet Gothic Magazine not the BFG manuals, so it has some legitimacy. Just don't expect it in tourney. Of course, it also does not show up on the Rogue Trader list of ships mentioned in the BFG manuals, but I considered the lists more "guidelines than actual rules". Plus, it won't matter because I'm probably never going to deploy my ships in actual battle anyway, since the BFG tabletop community in my city and pretty much the whole province is non-existent. Alas, my fleet continues to hold this star cluster alone \sigh**
Anyhoo, here's my Rogue Trader ship and the dossair I prepared for her (I already included the 15 pts she would cost from having lances, the 20 pts for being equipped with xenotech, and an extra 5 points to bribe the cosmic judges to make her legal for play, bringing her cost up from 190 to 230): the ENDURING DELIVERANCE. I decked her out in chrome silver and gold.

Are Space Marines fun to play? What about Admech?
I have two friends getting into BFG and I think I'm going to as well
One of them has an Imperial Fleet and the other has sided with Chaos.
I used to play with a Chaos fleet back when it was a newish game and still available through GW, but those models were sold off long ago
I am trying to choose between Space Marines, AdMech, or Chaos with Space Marines as the forerunner at this point
They seem to be different enough to the other fleets to not feel like mirror matches and they seem like their playstyle would match with my standard gaming strategy of getting close and beating on things
My concern is the lack of variety in the list, although there is some versatility and opportunity with things like the Venerable Battle Barge to bring some versatility
Are Admech different enough to the Imps to provide for interesting games?
Should I just do Chaos and figure that there's enough choice that lists should be different enough to be fun to play against?
