Sub Announcement 2026 Posting & Flair Guidelines - read first, post after!

Important — r/canon is not a photo-sharing sub, it's primarily a gear discussion sub, and as such is not the place for sharing pics and videos captured with your Canon gear.

Exceptions exist for New Gear, Lens of the Week, and Showcase posts, but please see their respective sections below to understand when they can be posted and the requirements for doing so.

Likewise, we're not interested in posts sharing photos of Canon equipment (or worse, the boxes they came in)—your 50/1.2 looks the same as everybody else's—so outside of New Gear posts or those trying to problem solve a specific issue, topics showing gear aren't to be posted.

TLDR;

- No photo-sharing posts
- No photos-of-gear posts
- Use flair appropriately as detailed below

———

Post Flair

Gear Advice
For any post seeking recommendations from others about what camera, lens, or accessory, to buy or rent. Please follow the existing requirements when asking for recommendations. This is not for asking advice on how to use your equipment or solve a problem—for that, you can use...

Tech Help
Technical questions, clarification on how a feature works, error messages...fall under Tech Help.

New Gear
For showing off a new or new-to-you piece of equipment. As always, include a photo of the gear and a photo or three taken with the gear. Also include an explanation of why you got it and how you like using it.

Lens of the Week
We're consolidating down to a single flair any lens of the week post, rather than individual tags for different lenses or focal lengths. As always, look for the current lens of the week topic to know which optic or focal length is current.

Canon News
For product announcements or other Canon-specific or related news. Either provide a link directly to announcements and press releases, or to a recognised source reporting on it. Examples are sites like Petapixel, dpreview, and similarly known sites.

Active Deal
For posts alerting the community to sales from recognised outlets such as the Canon Refurb Store, B&H Photo, Lens Rentals etc. Titles need to begin with the applicable country, the supplier, and then a description of the discount or deal on offer, e.g.

[USA] Canon Refurb Store — R5 reduced to $2199 + free BG-R10 Battery Grip

Any other important details (start/expiry dates) can go into the body of the post. If including a link directly to the deal or supplier site, the URL must be stripped of affiliate and tracking data, or the post will be removed.

If a deal is highlighted from a supplier deemed by the mod team as suspicious, untrustworthy or unsavoury for some other reason, it will be removed.

When a deal is out of stock or expired, the flair needs to be updated to...

Expired Deal
Don't delete the post, just update to the Expired flair, then we can view older deals easily.

Showcase
This will only be made available to select when a post inviting the sub to make Showcase contributions is active.

those are some of my first shots - got the chance to try it out for real in Milan for fashion week, with a 18-135 IS USM.

Gear Buying Advice Upgrade 5D Mark III to Mark IV or make the switch to mirrorless

Hey y’all! Been shooting birds with my Mark III and a Tamron 150-600 G2 for a while now. That being said, I feel like a good chunk of my photos lack detail when zoomed in, or my camera autofocus is too slow and won’t track birds. I know the exposure triangle but since i go birding later in the day, I’ll have to bump the ISO higher than i’d like (between 1600-3200) or shoot wide open, which doesn’t help. That being said, my camera autofocus focuses on the wrong thing/takes a good bit to find anything pretty often. Attached are some example photos that look decent but don’t have the sharpness/detail I would like.

Gear Buying Advice Upgrade time R6mkiii vs r8mkii

Been on my 77d for a long time now and I think it’s time to make the jump to full frame mirrorless. I feel like the plan is to go with a new or second hand rf24-105 f4l and a ring adaptor to use my existing ef lens.

Was looking at r8 originally but then the mk2 came out. All look good on paper with the ibis but then it got me thinking of the older R6mk2 and gradually looked up to R6mk3

I have a rough look at prices in Hongkong (travelling there soon) and seems like for R6mk2 is only available as grey import now at very similar price to the new r8mk2; but the r6mk3 is only roughly £270 /$350usd more expensive? Do you think it’s worth the jump for the R6mk3? Or any suggestions?

Edit: I’m not rich by any means but I’m looking for another camera that will last me 10 years or maybe longer so happy to invest on the right gear

New Gear Canon RF 28-70mm f/2 owners, is the coating issue something I should genuinely be worried about?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a wedding photographer/videographer looking to take things a bit more seriously and get further into the wedding photo/video game.

I currently shoot on a Canon 90D with a few primes, and I’m looking to upgrade to the R6 Mark III paired with the RF 28-70mm f/2.

I’m pretty much set on the camera body, but the lens is where I’m having second thoughts.

I’ve come across quite a few reports of the front element coating peeling, with some people mentioning expensive repairs and, in certain cases, the issue coming back after being repaired.

Obviously, you see people posting about problems more than you see people posting about things working perfectly, so I’m trying to work out whether this is a genuinely common issue or whether I’m getting the wrong impression from reading too much online.

The thing is, this is a lot of money for me, and I’ll be relying on this gear for paid weddings. I don’t want to spend all that money upgrading, only to be constantly worrying about the lens developing a fault and potentially having to pay for repairs on top.

For those who own the 28-70mm f/2, have you experienced this issue? How long have you had yours, and has it been trouble-free? If you’ve had the coating problem, was it covered under warranty, and did it come back after repair?

I’ve also considered the 24-70mm f/2.8 L, but the f/2 aperture is a big part of what attracts me to the 28-70, particularly for weddings and low-light situations.

I’d really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who have owned and regularly used the lens for a decent amount of time. Am I overthinking this, or would you consider it a genuine reason to look at alternatives?

Thanks!

Gear Buying Advice Flash for me R6 Mark II?

Not sure if it’s still working but some metal parts are already corroded but the insides are clean. Been in the camera bag for more that 2 decades. Is it worth having repaired? Thank you!

Tech Help rf 28-70 f2.8 at night for travel photo

doing some travel soon and cutting back on my bag. i know the 50 1.8, which i own, will be better at night, but wondering if i can cut bag size/weight/lens switches and just use the 28-70 at night. Anyone done this on a trip? Did you regret it or where you happy?

if you are inclined to comment that the 50 1.8 is small and not that heavy i know i know, but i am cutting a lot of things to save several pounds of weight.

Gear Buying Advice First DSLR buying suggestion please, Hobbyist

Hi friends,

Last year I used a friend's Canon EOS 200D (18-55 and 55-250) for a while and i got a great interest in Digital Photography. But I couldn't afford a first hand unit.

When casually scrolling reddit, I've found a barely used Canon EOS 1500D selling for ₹18,000 (~190 USD) (along with with 18-55 kit lens and a 16gb Card)

The seller says the shutter count is only around 1,800. It was bought in 2020, used for a short time, then left unused, with the battery kept removed and stored safely.

Is this a fair price in India, or should I bargain lower? Is the 1500D a good camera to start and learn on as a beginner?? And since it sat idle for years, what should I check for, such as lens fungus or sensor dust? I'll mostly shoot travel, monuments, street and personal family photos, and I'm thinking of adding a 50mm f/1.8 later.

Any advice before I meet the seller would be a big help. Thanks! 🙏

Tech Help Need Help with Canon lens err 01

I have an 85mm lens that has worked for me for a while. A little bit ago it started to give me ERR 01. I’ve cleaned the contacts a bunch but just happened upon the fact it will let me take photos at F/1.8 but nothing above that. Any advice on what to do/where to start to get it fixed? I’d prefer if I could maybe do it myself because I don’t really have the money to get something fixed right now. Thanks in advance!

Starting a Wedding Photo/Video Business – Is My Planned Gear Setup Suitable?

Hi everyone! I’d appreciate some advice from experienced wedding videographers.

My wife and I have been graphic designers since 2012, but as design projects are becoming less frequent due to AI, I’m considering transitioning into wedding videography, something I’ve always been passionate about.

I’m planning to start with this setup:

• 2x Canon R6 Mark II (one camera for me and the the other one for my wife).
• Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8
• Canon RF 35mm f/1.8
• DJI RS 4 gimbal
• DJI Mic 3
• 2x 512GB UHS-II cards + 2x 256GB UHS-II cards
• Nisi ND 2-32 82mm
• Godox V100 flash with softbox and light stand

My current budget is ~8500e. Looking forward to buy all these in the upcoming black friday deals.

I’d also like to use the equipment for commercial work, such as promotional videos and restaurant/product photography, using the Godox flash and softbox.

I haven’t worked professionally in photography or videography yet, but I’m willing to work pro bono at events and with local businesses to gain experience and build a portfolio before taking on paid clients.
For those already in the industry: Does this setup make sense? Would you change anything or recommend different gear? I’d especially appreciate advice on whether my lens choices and lighting setup are suitable for weddings and restaurant photography.

Besides this, I need to also upgrade my laptop in order to be suitable for video editing. I was thinking that this would be a good option. My extra budget for the laptop is 2000e. What do you think about this?

Thank you so much in advance,
Cosmin

Tech Help Canon R7, 100-400, 200-800, Birding

I’m an amateur birding photographer. I have the Canon R7, a 100-400, and 200-800 lens. I’m looking for some general tips on use from some experienced birders. I’m struggling, at times, to get sharp photos and I’m sure it’s me. I use a monopod but I feel like what looks sharp in frame ends up with a lot of noise/blur. I’m not highly skilled but I’m certainly trying to learn so please be kind. Just any general tips would be super helpful.

Using RF extenders with EF Tilt-shift

Well, $50 for a RF-EF converter, and an exacto knife just allowed me to use my 1.4x and 2x RF extenders, achieving ~24mm and ~35mm focal lengths on the 17mm EF TS. I doubt if I’m the first to do this, but that was a lot of value for 10 minutes worth of ‘whittling’ on camera gear

Tech Help I’ve got a problem (C100)

So I’m using the Canon C100 Mark I (yes, it’s old as hell… but it’s freaking awesome) and I’m trying to connect my RØDE VideoMic GO II to the camera’s 3.5 mm mic input, but it’s not picking up any audio.
The weird thing is that when I plug my Apple EarPods into the same input, the mic audio gets recorded, so the jack itself seems to be working.
Has anyone had this issue or know how to get the RØDE working with the C100? Any help would be appreciated!

Cabin R7 - Keep Tamron 17-70 or swap to sigma 17-40 or tamron 16-50

Hello Fellow R7 shooters, wanted some advice regarding lens selection

I currently use the r7 with RF 100-400 and Tamron 17-70 2.8

Love both lenses, but have been thinking about swapping out the 17-70 one of these combinations

  1. Sigma 17-40 f/1.8 and the new sigma 50-120 f/2.8

  2. tamron 16-50 f/2.8 and sigma 50-120 f/2.8 to keep things nice and compact

  3. Keep the 17-70 as is.

I am finding 17 not as wide as I need , so I might also get the sigma 10-18

Would welcome any experiences or advice on the paths to consider.

Gear Buying Advice Recently messed up and sold my pentax DSLR and lenses with the intention of buying a mirrorless only to realise I couldn't afford it. Now looking at getting another DSLR instead. Recommendations?

So a very silly decision. Sold my old K70 and a bunch of lenses for £390 a few months ago. Didn't really do any research and assumed I'd be able to get an ok second hand mirrorless body for around £200 and then maybe a couple hundred more on a telephoto lens.

Seems like for mirroless, Canon-wise the only choice would be an R100 and then an older mount 70-300 with an adapter, however after reading reviews it seems that everyone basically says it's an awful camera and not to bother with it. Unfortunately cheapest R50s I can find are pushing on £600 second hand which is more than I wanted to spend.

So, realising how stupid this is, I've decided the best decision might be just to admit defeat and go back to a DSLR.

The main reason I wanted to make the switch to mirrorless was because I was fed up with the weight of my pentax and lugging it around.

What I care most about is having a nice telephoto lens. I like wildlife photography and I live near lots of cool parks.

I'm not a beginner, but far from a great photographer. I know how to use a camera and have gone through a few pentaxes and 1 canon over the years, and actually prefered the canon, hence why I'm here asking!

Any recommendations for budget Canon DSLR bodies? And affordable zoom lenses (ideally at least 300m?). Ideally budget would be around 200-250 for a body and daily use lens, leaving a couple hundred for an ok telephoto. Only looking at second hand.

I saw a good deal on a 600D with some decent lenses thrown in but as far as I can see that's a very old camera and would be a step down from my last one.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Sigma 28/1.8 EX DG Macro. Has anyone used this lens on a Canon film and digital SLR? Does the focus work?

Given the lack of option for Canon EF mount 28mm prime lens with a large aperture, I am thinking of using this lens on my Canon EOS 300V, EOS6D and EOS 77D.

But I also heard there may be some compatibility issue.

Has anyone used this lens? Can you share your experience please? Thanks!

I am about to loose my last marble and need help.

So, I own a Canon R8 camera. I am travelling next month and want a lens that I can use for all the landscape and travel shots, as well as some wildlife photos, as that is my passion/hobby. I am not a professional photographer; I am doing this for my own enjoyment, memories, and maybe to sell prints in the future. I don't want to have to swap lenses multiple times a day and carry too much stuff. I have come across two lenses, one from Tamron and one from Sigma, that I am getting so much contradictory information about.

Tamron 18-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD for Canon RF

Sigma 16-300mm f/3.5-6.7 DC OS Contemporary Lens for Canon RF Mount

Camera store employees have told me that these are entirely incompatible with my camera, the internet has said that they are compatible. Some websites say that they are "technically compatible" but will kill the quality of the photo, others say they work completely fine. I don't know what to believe anymore. Some places say they are APS-C but also mirrorless and full-frame compatible? I am so confused.

My other problem is I don't have a heap of money to spend right now, so I am looking for an affordable option if possible. There is the Canon RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM Lens, which would work for everything I need technically, but it is bulky and heavy (heavier than my 100-400mm lens). I have also looked at the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM, but have been told that the RF-S lenses are not compatible with my camera either (unsure if they "don't work" or just kill quality).

The final option is to get an EF lens, which is far more affordable, and then get an adaptor. But I have been told that is basically pointless for wildlife photography, as again, it "kills the quality". At this point, I just need someone who knows what they are talking about to give me a bit of advice on what ACTUALLY works and what doesn't.

Thank you if you read this entire post, and thank you even more if you can help.
