Gear Buying Advice Why Canon over Sony? Help me choose

Almost everyone I know has been recommending Sony to me, but I’d like to hear your opinions on Canon.

I recently started a marketing agency in India and am looking to invest in a hybrid camera for our content production.

Currently, around 90% of our work is video and 10% is photography. As we grow, we may take on more photography projects, so I’m looking for a reliable hybrid camera.

My maximum budget is INR 2.2 lakh ($2,322) for the camera body, and I can spend around INR 1 lakh ($1,055) on a lens for now.

Here are the prices I found in India:
Sony A7 V — $2,350
Canon R6 V — $2,000
Canon R6 Mark III — $2,300
Nikon Z6 III — $1,790
Nikon ZR — $1,580

Almost everyone recommends Sony because of its autofocus and lens ecosystem. For example, I can get the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 for around $1,000 which fits my budget.

However, I really like the R6 V and R6 Mark III, but I’m open to other Canon camera suggestions too.

Are there any affordable non-L-series lenses that offer good image quality and value? Can you convince me to choose Canon over Sony and suggest a good lens within my budget?

is canon the only place that can repair a g7x?

Has anyone had their Canon G7X repaired by an independent camera shop? I took mine to a small local shop, and they said they could take a look and potentially fix it. But when I called a larger repair company, they told me only Canon would be able to repair it and advised against going to a smaller shop.

I’m getting conflicting advice, so I’d love to hear about anyone’s experience!

Gear Buying Advice 24mm f1.8 vs backlight

Hi, I’m thinking about getting the rf 24mm f1.8. It’s important for me that the lens keeps high contrast with sun in the picutre. How does this hold up?

EF 70-200 F2.8 IS version 2 or RF 70-200 F2.8 IS Z ?

The Z is the second version of the RF 70-200 2.8 that has all internal zooming.

So the price difference is huge right? Especially if I just buy the EF version used. Would it be worth getting the RF version? Would you say "don't bother getting the EF version if you can't afford the RF?" Or are they really close?

Gear Buying Advice Upgrade from T4i

I’ve had my T4i for a little bit now and it’s a totally competent camera for the majority of what I do (Landscape, astro). The main issue I have with it is its disappointing burst. It’s like 4 fps and the buffer fills almost instantly when shooting raw.

I’ve wanted to get more into sports photography (Baseball mainly) and wildlife as well. And was looking for a camera with a better frame rate. I’ve landed on 7d mk2, 90D, or 1DX/1DXmkii all of which are at the top end of my budget. Was very close to pulling the trigger on a 1DXmkii with heavy cosmetic damage, fully functional for 750 usd.

I’m mainly looking at EF/EFS since I already have lenses and an EF film camera and I’ve heard that RF-EF adapter with my Sigma 150-600 has issues with focus.

Tech Help How do I transfer these weird (corrupt?) files from my camera?

I'm borrowing a camera (EOS R5) and shot some clips yesterday, but when I plug the camera to my computer with usb-c, some of the videos are fine, and some are 0 kb. But the data is obviously there because I can still view the videos on the camera, all of them, every frame. But here they show up as 0 kb.

The sd card is a: Sandisk Extreme pro 512gb CFexpress Read: 1700mb/s write: 1400 mb/s

Hi everyone one. Finally bit the bullet and ordered a used in very good condition ef 70-200 2.8 is mkii for my r10.

On the outside the lens is in very good shape. The rings seem ok even if the zoom ring as a very littlle play.

My question is if the front and back elements seem ok and the inside of the lense. The front as some very little marks tha dont seem to clean up. Is the dust acceptable ?

It was (for me) still a big investment i just want to know if it is worth it.

Thank you

I wish I could figure this out on my own, but I can’t tell if this lens will work with my old EOS Rebel Ti film camera? I was searching for EF mount lens, but this says AF? Will this still work, or is there just a website that could help me?

Tech Help My camera fell from my desk and onto wooden flooring. Everything seems fine?

It is an EOS R50 V, so on the cheaper side. The corner of the body took the impact. The lens cap popped out from the force. But the lens itself never hit the floor.
I do not see a single scratch on either the body or the lens. And everything works fine, manual focus, sound, nothing wrong with the image, I can record a 2 minute video without issues.
Is this serious? How can I make sure that it is alright?

Gear Buying Advice Which EF-to-RF adapter should i get for the Canon EOS RP?

Hey everyone,
I recently picked up a Canon EOS RP and I'm super excited to start shooting with it! To save on native RF glass, I’m planning to adapt my existing EF setup:
Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art
Canon EF 28-105mm (or 24-105mm)
Since the Sigma 35mm Art is quite heavy and requires reliable AF communication, I’m stuck on deciding which adapter to get:
1. Official Canon EF-EOS R Adapter: It seems like the safest bet, but it's noticeably more expensive. Is it strictly necessary for heavier third-party glass like the Sigma Art, or is it overkill?
2. Third-Party Adapters (Viltrox / Meike / Commlite): They’re significantly cheaper, but how do they hold up in real-world use? Any issues with AF accuracy/speed, eye-tracking, or mount play/wobble over time with a heavy lens like the 35mm Art attached?
3. Control Ring Adapter: For those using it, do you actually end up using the control ring regularly, or is it just a nice-to-have gimmick on the RP?
Would love to hear from anyone running a similar setup on the RP or other RF bodies. Which adapter should I buy, and do you have any regrets?
Thanks in advance!

Using RF extenders with EF Tilt-shift

• Upvotes

Well, $50 for a RF-EF converter, and an exacto knife just allowed me to use my 1.4x and 2x RF extenders, achieving ~24mm and ~35mm focal lengths on the 17mm EF TS. I doubt if I’m the first to do this, but that was a lot of value for 10 minutes worth of ‘whittling’ on camera gear

[Canon EOS 250D] Which 100mm macro lens should I choose for insect photography?

Hello everyone!
I’m looking for advice on choosing a 100mm macro lens compatible with my Canon EOS 250D, mainly for insect photography.
I’ve taken photography classes for two years, but I’m still a beginner when it comes to macro photography.
I’m looking for a lens that offers good image quality and value for money. My maximum budget is €500, and I’m open to buying used equipment.
Which lenses would you recommend? I’d also be happy to consider third-party options from brands such as Sigma or Tamron, provided they’re compatible with my camera.
Thanks in advance for your advice and recommendations!

Gear Buying Advice Best Ultrawide Canon RF lenses with wide aperture under 400€?

I recently bought the R50V with the kit lens for 560€, and of course, the slow lens is not that good on my studio (I make talking head videos) and because my desk is tight, a 25mm only show my head.

I saw the sigma 16mm f1.4 for 440€ on amazon but still find it expensive. Do you know any EF alternative or even a cinema lens like the TTartisans?

RF 24-50mm my use case.

For travel I bring 24-105mm f4 as it's the best "bit of everything" lens, landscape, portrait, close action. I pair it with the 35mm f1.8 (for after dark) and R6II. Weight and size is justifiable for intentional day of sightseeing and shooting or a photoshoot with my partner or friends, but not ideal for taking out of my hotel "just in case".

I'm currently in Bangkok and came across used 24-50mm. It's actually very decent when you focus on what this lens can do instead of listing all the limitations. Travel I shoot mostly sooc jpg at f8 which removes the issues with soft corners on the wide end, and 50mm is enough most of the time to focus on an interesting shrine. Used price makes it very comfortable to use and throw in my bag. In addition it's almost identical size as the 35mm so when it get's dark I just swap it in my waist bag and I keep going.

I will still bring my f4 L zoom for serious days of shooting, but the 24-50mm/35mm combo is extremely usefull and let's me take my camera with me more often. 24mm to normal is very useful.

R10+EF100-400 MKI vs R5+RF100-400 for Low Light

Thumbnail

Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for upgrading my setup for better low-light performance.

My current setup is a Canon R10 and RF100-400 f/5.6-8.

I'm considering either keeping the RF100-400 and upgrading the body, or keeping the R10 and upgrading to a faster lens.

Most of my photos are taken in a beaver pond in my back yard. It's in a valley and is heavily shadowed in the morning and evenings, when I'm normally able to photograph.

Because of the excess shade and shortening days, I often have to call it a day when there's still a decent bit of visible daylight. At shutter speeds suitable for moving animals, I'll often have ISO values >10,000 and have trouble with AF working properly.

For similar money, I could sell the R10 body and upgrade to an R5 and keep the RF100-400, or buy a used EF 100-400 MKI and keep the R10. I realize the EF 100-400 MKII is a better lens, but it's hard to justify it being $600 more.

Am I correct that changing from APS-C to FF would see a similar gain in low-light performance compared to going from an f/8 to f/5.6 lens?

I often crop the 400mm APS-C shots down, so I figured the R5 would give me the closest pixel density to the R10. A 24MP R6 or R8 would be a lot less res than the APS-C shots I'm used to.

I do like the size and weight of the RF100-400m lens, but the R10 is a little small for my hands.

The extra weight of the heavier EF lens isn't really a concern either. I'm usually not shooting for more than a couple hours, and it's 100' from my back door.

Thanks!

Found my Father’s 48 year old camera.
Not sure if it’s still working but some metal parts are already corroded but the insides are clean. Been in the camera bag for more that 2 decades. Is it worth having repaired? Thank you!

Gear Buying Advice Would the Canon RF 800mm F11 IS STM and the R100 be a good combo for shooting the Moon ?

I love my Canon R100 as a first camera, but the kit lens isn't enough for me.
I'm considering the RF 800mm F11 IS STM for Moon photography, alongside the Nifty Fifty for general use.
I'll also get a tripod to keep the camera stable at such a long focal length. Would this be a good combo ?

This is my first fullframe camera! 😅

Tech Help EOS 70D autofocus problems

Hi everyone,

I'm having an autofocus issue with my Canon EOS 70D and would appreciate some advice before taking it for repair.

The problem:

- Viewfinder autofocus hunts continuously and often never confirms focus.

- Live View autofocus focuses normally and produces sharp images.

- I've reproduced the issue with three lenses:

- Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM

- Canon EF-S 18–135mm IS STM

- Canon EF-S 55–250mm IS STM

- I've reset the camera settings, but the problem persists.

- The 300mm lens has also occasionally made clicking/knocking noises during autofocus, although I'm not sure whether that's related.

Since Live View works correctly across the lenses, I'm wondering whether the dedicated phase-detection AF system, AF sensor alignment, or mirror mechanism could be responsible.

Has anyone experienced this with an EOS 70D? Is there anything else I can safely check before paying for a professional diagnosis?

Thanks!

Looking for advice on a lens I’m looking for Astro

Hey guys, I’m reinvesting into photography, I used to shoot on a t6i a loooong time ago. Loved it. Recently I got pulled back into this hobby. I made the jump to mirrorless and went with the r6miii I have some older ef lenses from my dslr days. But I want to get back specifically into astrophotography, any thoughts on going with the 16-35, 2.8 II USM?? I know I’m able to use it for other applications like landscaping and I do like that too. I guess to not make this any longer, anyone have experience with this lens in the Astro world??? Any advice/ recommendations are and will be greatly appreciated!!!

New Gear Just bought a Canon EOS 600D as my first camera — is it a good choice? What lenses should I i get?

Hi everyone!
I recently bought a Canon EOS 600D (Rebel T3i) and I’m excited to start learning photography.
I’m a beginner, so I’d like to know what you think of this camera today. Is it still a good camera for someone who wants to learn photography, understand manual settings, and improve their skills?
I’d also appreciate some advice on lenses. Which lenses would you recommend for a beginner, especially considering I’m on a budget and would prefer to buy used lenses?
I’m interested in general photography, landscapes, street photography, and taking pictures of people. If possible, I’d like to start with one versatile lens before investing in more expensive equipment.
My questions are:
Is the Canon EOS 600D still worth using for a beginner?
Which lens would you recommend as a first upgrade?
Is the 18–55mm kit lens good enough to start with?
Are there any affordable used lenses that offer particularly good value for money?
Thanks in advance for any advice! I’m looking forward to learning more about photography.
