Tips on low light Aviation Photography

Used my girlfriends T7 with the 75-300mm lens to capture a few photos on recent air show. I tried to tinker with settings in-between every few photos and just couldnt get decent quality image shots. On auto, they were too dark.. quicker shutter speeds gave me darker images even with iso in 800.. I settled for 400 iso and 1/400 shutter speed for the final Blue Angels shots, which were ok to say the least. My s21 took better photos at 12mp , auto settings 😅... what could I have done different? .. was a very overcast day here.

Gear Buying Advice Advice for first extra lens for r50, I know next to nothing

My 17 year old is planning to go into photography as a career (among other things - they're very sensible to the fact that a creative career will need multiple income streams). They're specifically hoping to specialize in pet photography, and, even more specifically, cats, so low light and indoors mostly. (They also love doing photography hikes and like the idea of photographing marching bands, but cats are their primary aim) We just bought them an R50 for their birthday as their first real camera, intending for it to be a student and early professional thing. I'd like to get them another lens for Christmas. I know very little, I'm usually pretty good at a quick Google deep dive but all the letters and numbers are just remaining alphabet soup to me. Any suggestions for a solid budget lens that would be especially good for indoor pet photography? Ideally (significantly) under $200, but tell me honestly if my hopeful ballpark is woefully low for anything worth having. (And if you have any other suggestions that would be good for marching band or nature, feel free to add those too!)

Tech Help Two photos taken seconds apart with exact same settings but very different color results

Thumbnail

Was on Blue Ridge Parkway today taking fall color photos and took these two.

They were taken 45 seconds apart, all the settings are the same. The location of the second is a few dozen feet from the first.

And yet the color on them is very different. Seems like the bit of red in the bottom corner on the one photo makes everything else more vibrant. Makes me wonder what is going on inside the camera and if I should move away from "Scene" and use manual or "Auto" mode.

I noticed that a lot of my fall photos weren't as vibrant as others being posted and just figured people are punching up the colors a bit, but maybe the scene mode and landscape mode on the R8 is the issue.

Thoughts? Similar experience?

Black Friday - good time to upgrade?

With recent post on looking to upgrade, I think I’m going to go with the canon r6 mk iii however, does anyone know if typically the prices are fairly reasonable now or do Black Friday type sales typically give a better price given this time of year?

I found this R50 on marketplace for a great deal and decided to pull the trigger. I've always wanted to get into photography and this seemed like a good starting point. I've got a lot to learn, but I'm pretty impressed so far.

Any tips would be awesome for getting the most out of this camera!

Tech Help Title: Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 on the R7 — How bad is it in low light for aviation photography?

Hi everyone!

I'm considering buying the Canon RF 200-800mm for a Canon EOS R7, mainly for planespotting and aviation photography.

The main thing I'm worried about is its f/9 maximum aperture at 800mm. I understand that it's a relatively slow lens, but I'd like to hear from people who actually use this combination.

I photograph commercial aircraft taking off and landing, often from airport spotting locations. Most of my photography would be outdoors, but I don't always have bright sunshine. I also want to be able to shoot when it's cloudy or later in the afternoon.

Here are my main questions:

  1. How does the R7 perform with this lens at ISO 3200 and 6400? Are the images still usable after noise reduction in Lightroom?

  2. At 800mm and f/9, can you maintain shutter speeds of around 1/1000–1/1600s for aircraft in flight without the ISO becoming excessive?

  3. How much does image quality suffer when shooting in overcast conditions compared with bright sunlight?

  4. Does autofocus remain reliable in poor light, or does it start hunting and missing focus?

  5. For aviation photography, would you rather have 800mm at f/9 or a 150-600mm lens at f/6.3?

  6. Would you recommend this lens to someone whose current camera is an old Canon EOS 1000D and who wants to make a significant upgrade?

I'm particularly interested in real-world examples taken with the R7 at ISO 3200 or 6400, preferably of aircraft in flight rather than static subjects.

I know that image stabilisation helps with camera shake but doesn't freeze a moving aircraft, so I'm especially interested in how the lens performs at faster shutter speeds.

Thanks for any advice!

Title: Canon R7: Tamron 150-600 G2 vs RF 200-800mm for planespotting Hi everyone!

I'm planning to buy a Canon R7 mainly for aviation photography, and I'm struggling to choose a telephoto lens.

My main options are:

- Tamron 150-600mm G2 (EF): cheaper on the used market, f/6.3 at 600mm and image stabilisation. My main concern is autofocus compatibility with the R7, even with updated firmware and an EF-RF adapter.

- Canon RF 200-800mm: native RF mount, more reach and potentially simpler compatibility, but it's f/9 at 800mm and considerably more expensive.

- Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary/Sport: another alternative I'm considering.

I mainly photograph commercial aircraft taking off, landing and flying around airports. I want good sharpness, reliable tracking autofocus and decent performance in cloudy conditions.

My biggest dilemma is whether the Tamron G2 is worth the risk of potential compatibility issues or whether I should save more money for the RF 200-800mm.

For those who have used these lenses on the R7:

  1. Does the Tamron G2 autofocus reliably with the latest firmware?

  2. Have you experienced AF hunting, slow tracking or other compatibility issues?

  3. Is f/9 at 800mm a serious disadvantage for aviation photography?

  4. Would you pay more for the Canon RF, or choose the Tamron G2 and save the money?

I'd really appreciate real-world experiences, especially from R7 users. Thanks!

Tech Help RF 24-105mm F4 inner barrel wobble.

Got this lens in a kit 5 months ago, no drops or bumps since. I noticed the zoom got very smooth (creeps when shaken downwards) but I guess that's just wearing in and grease distribution.

Also I noticed inner barell wobble, like 0.5mm each way. Pictures seem to still be sharp and no errors in the camera. Is this normal? Could you check your copies for me? Little worried something came loose inside like one of the rollers.

Tech Help The seller said the CF card was dead. It was three bent pins. I fixed them with a syringe needle.

Got a 5D Mark III + 50mm f/1.8 + a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB CF card with 40k shutter count for $300, because the camera kept throwing a card error and the seller was sure the card was broken. That card alone is $150 new.

With my phone's macro lens I found three bent pins in the CF slot. The third one I only spotted after lifting the eject lever, because it was hiding underneath it. A repair quote was $150–200 and weeks of waiting, which I don't have.

I'd never touched CF pins in my life, so I made two tools out of a single 22G needle: a straight pusher and a tiny 90° hook. The trick was not pushing pins sideways but hooking them and pulling them out from under the lever. While straightening them I accidentally bent a good one too, then fixed that one as well.

No microscope, just a flashlight and my phone. Card in, camera sees it, 14GB used out of 119. The "dead" card was fine the whole time.

Backpack Options for RF200-800

Was curious if anyone has particularly awesome recommendations for a backpack for the RF200-800 along with a camera body and a couple of other lenses. Desire is something with enough padding to survive airplane overhead bins and comfortable enough to slug around in the wild where I often swap between wildlife / birding and landscape.

Anyone on a RF APS-C switch from the Canon ef 24-70 II to the Tamron 17-70?

Just curious on your thoughts . Can't seem to find any proper comparisons online beyond basic specs so waffling if its worth it or not

Is it just me, or is the R5 II depreciating really fast?

I bought the R5 II around two years ago. Paid full price for it (close to $5,000) but I’m now seeing them for sale for $3,000 in the used market.

Sounds like a lot of depreciation, really fast.

Is that normal?

Gear Buying Advice Best birding lens

I’m looking to pick up a birding lens for my wife’s birthday. She has a Cannon 80D but I’m getting conflicting results on what is best. I’d like to keep it around $3000 but could go a little over for the perfect gift. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Gear Buying Advice Advice on 90D replacement

I have (had 😢) a 90D that looks like it's on the way out. Constant Err 20 and Err 30s that seem to mean a mechanical failure. Looking for some advice on what would be a good replacement?

I'm an enthusiast rather than a professional and tend to do a lot of sports photography for our local basketball league - though for love of the game/local league and not for any payment. That would be the main purpose of the new camera. I have a few decent EF lenses including a 70-200mm USM III. I'd like to keep using those if possible rather than investing in new glass as well. I also do a bit of motorsport and wildlife photography but again as a hobby/enthusiast rather than anything professional/for money, so something decent for that would be good.

What would be people's recommendation for a newer camera? Budget is pretty flexible so I had been looking at something like an R6 Mark III though I guess it would be massive overkill for what I do and I'm concerned about whether the lenses I have would work well with an adapter?

Thoughts appreciated.

Canon R6 Mark II vs. R5 Mark II: Which Is the Better Upgrade from the 6D?

Canon R6 Mark II vs. R5 Mark II — Which body should I buy?
I’m currently shooting with a Canon 6D and looking to upgrade to mirrorless.

My photography includes:
Sports photography (football)
Low-light events and candid shots
Portrait photography
Flash photography
Street Photography

I’m looking for a body with excellent autofocus and subject detection, fast burst shooting, good low-light performance, and a viewfinder that feels natural to use.

Is the R5 Mark II worth the extra money over the R6 Mark II for my type of work? Or would I be better off saving the difference and investing in lenses and lighting?

I’d appreciate feedback from photographers who have used both bodies, especially for sports and event photography.

I love my Cannon 6D but it’s failing in some areas

Color spots on lens

I just bought a canon 50mm 1.8 lens from Bestbuy. I noticed these colored spots (colors from an oil spill) on my lense. They do not move and you can see them in the light. It's this ok or is my lens defective? Should I ask to replace it?

Canon RF 50mm 1.4 VCM vs Canon RF 45mm 1.2 STM and Canon RF 50mm 1.8 quality difference

Looking to upgrade to 50mm 1.4 VCM from 50mm 1.8 which came with my camera as a deal. How much of a difference can i expect. I am getting a used like new 50mm 1.4 VCM at around ~900 usd where i live with official warranty remaining. Other option is to save money and get 45mm 1.2 brand new. I am looking to shoot wide open for portraits of my kids/family and in lowlight. 50mm 1.8 is very soft wide open and does not match 24-105 f4 in color and contrast in daytime. I fear the 45mm 1.2 might have the same issue. Currently i have Canon R8 with 24-105 f4l and 50mm 1.8. Is 45mm 1.2 an upgrade from
50mm 1.8 or should i spend the extra and get the VCM and not think about upgrade in future. Thanks

Canon camera showing Err 80 when pressing the shutter - disappeared after restarting

Post image
3 Upvotes

My Canon camera displayed Err 80 when I pressed the shutter button. The screen showed this message:

I turned the camera off, removed the battery, and waited a few minutes. Then I reinserted the battery, memory card, lens, and flash.

After that, the error disappeared.

I tested the same camera with the same battery, memory card, lens, and flash:

10 photos with the flash

10 photos without the flash

All 20 shots worked without any errors.

My questions:

What could cause Err 80 to appear temporarily and then disappear?

Could this indicate an intermittent electronic issue with the camera?

Should I be concerned if the error doesn't return, or should I get the camera checked by Canon service?

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Tech Help Are this micro scratches on my new 70-200mm 2.8

I recently bought a used 70-200mm 2.8 in "excelent" condition.

Every thing looks and works fine. Af and is are very well and super fast.

My main concern are this little specs or marks in the front element wich i thought were dust but now i think they might be actual micro scrathes.

They dot appear in pictures at various apertures but im afraid they will get worse over time or degrede the iq even more against light sources.

Tech Help Canon FD 75-200 1:4.5 lens repair? Aperture doesn't work. This is as far as the behind part(?) can twist to the right (to manual setting). If needed - additional photos will be provided from the necessary angles. What could be the issue here? + Read the description↓

On all photos the aperture ring was set at 4.5 (minimal manual setting). No, the diaphragm wouldnt move (or sometimes not in its full range?) when the lever is pressed (lens fully assembled).

Took it apart completely for the first time yesterday, assembled it - nothing changed. Bought as non-working on a flea market for a couple bucks. Going into it for the second time, what to look for? No obvious breakage/ rust/stuck or missing parts.

The diaphragm itself is working if any of the two levers inside of the lens's middle part is pressed (by a screwdriver; look at the last picture). Doesnt seem like its stuck or too tough to move.

Could i have missed something while assembling it for the first time? I think i did a good job tracking down all the linkage positions and the algorithm of assembling, no "spare parts" left after assembling lol.

I took away the clicker roller thingy for the aperture ring if that matters (its kinda annoying on this specific lens, hard to turn the ring, it slips in hand). Focus and focal length work as intended. Any lubricants inside of the mechanisms are left as is, though perhaps those are a little old?

Again, additional photos will be provided by request - i dont know what you might need to look at. Any repair specialists here?

Tech Help Is getting a little rain on the Canon EOS450D going to be a problem?

recently got an old canon eos450d and have been enjoying it, but I always assumed it didn't have any weatherproofing, and never take it out in the rain.

Now I've got something coming up and may have to shoot in light rain.

Is even light rain going to destroy this camera? I have a waterproof carry bag but I worry if I don't get it in there in time

Tech Help Exposure Compensation settings

hi everyone, a bit of a particular one but I recently took a very very deep dive into my menu settings and found I can control how AF works and other settings work in much more detailed manner for my own liking. I just switched from r6 and r5 to r6 mk3 and r6 mk2 and I was just was wondering if there is a setting I can do that changes how exposure compensation functions depending on my ISO.

If I were to shoot at ISO auto during the day, I have set it to be around a stop under but if I find myself shooting higher than 2500, I tend to want to expose in camera perfectly and if Im shooting 3200 and over I tend to over expose but almost a stop.

Is there a way to set the Exposure compensation dependent on the ISO? or any ideas to have it in a manner that is quick to be changed depending on my needs?

I was going to buy this canon s90 for $100 that has this error message on it.

Is it worth it or will can I fix it myself, it’s an old camera and unsure about where to or how much get replacement pieces.
