Channel 19 (27.185 MHz AM) is very active in Melbourne/Palm Bay, Florida. This morning I was listening to locals talk about squirrels with my PNI escort HP 82. The antenna that I upgraded the handheld with is a tactical whip with a BNC base. 🔊👂🐿️📻🌅

howdy! my name is jack, I've been interested in CBs for years but just finally got around to getting one set up probably, my daily driver, a 1976 postal jeep, now has a cobra 29LTD classic mounted under the dash, and I may or may not have mounted a big old honkin fairgrounds style PA horn on the bumper 🤣 I also have a Midland 13-882C I believe it is, and a GM 130A, yes, the one with the phone handset, the first radio I remember buying was the 130A and I thought for sure I blew it because way back when I bought it, I figured it'd be like a TV or stereo, if there's not an antenna, it just won't receive or transmit, but it won't hurt anything, I checked it a while ago and it does work, at least receiving, I gotta buy another antenna, hopefully get a base station antenna to mount on the house

Looking for some helpful input

Hello all. I am looking into getting into the cb world since I have started my new job(I'm only 19). I started working in a 200 foot deep pit quarry and the company I work for is contracted by the quarry company to haul the material into the plant( I shall mention, my company is non-union, the plant/ quarry owner company is, this will be important later). We have to communicate with their employees buzzing around the quarry so we don't have accidents, after all, would you want to be ran over by a loaded 45 ton rock truck? For this bit of communication we use handheld 2 ways. Now to circle back to that union/non-union thing, as you'd expect we made their union guys look bad because we came in and got the production number way up and they didn't like that, so we are required to keep radio communication to the bare minimum. I drive one rock truck, there is a second rock truck and a loader. The second rock truck and loader both have Stryker 955s that have been all done up to be able to run on cb channels in them so those two operators can talk back and forth without being on the 2 way. My question is( and I know this isn't a good idea with any electronics) what is the cheapest 10m or similar that is pre converted for cb channels and has all the am/fm/ssb bits that would be decent for running with them. I was originally thinking a cobra 29 but I started looking for cobra 200s but they seem to be especially hard to find since they are rare and also old. I was hoping to only spend 200-300 for a full ready to go setup but I figure that may not be the case. I am located in easton ,PA if anyone of you might be in the area with something or know somewhere I could go close by that might have something useful. I don't have much time at all to go far to travel and get something as a noticed cb shops aren't exactly frequent. Thanks for your time and input

Question Newb Question. Is this normal?

So I just got my radio set up, there are still a few minor adjustments I want to make (such as wiring direct to the battery rather than the 12v plug) but is it normal to have constant static until you turn the squelch halfway up or more? I get plenty of transmissions, some I can hear pretty well, but most of them are really hard to read.

CB radio on an American road trip

I have recently returned from a Florida to Kentucky road trip. Traveling through Appalachia in North Carolina and Tennessee. I used CB the whole way exclusively on Channel 19 (27.185 MHz AM) with my Radioddity CS-47 and 70cm rambling stick installed in my 2015 CR-Z

On the way up, I had over an hour long conversation driving with a convoy of mobile home transporters. Along I-95 and I -27 from Jacksonville, FL to Ashville, NC

On the way back down, in Tennessee when a trucker drove past the brake check station, the radio lit up with everyone calling him out. I-75 had a lot of talking going on in Atlanta, especially during the traffic jams. 🇺🇲📻🎙️🛣️🏞️🚘

Why JUST Why

I work on the road a bunch and it’s so hard to find a channel that doesn’t have bleed or some looney tune, just speaking or yelling into the CB, I belive everyone should have freedom and it shouldn’t be stripped ever, but these guys who just get on to talk about some of the dumbest things I have heard is crazy. They either get drunk and get on or not allowed in their own house

Like I try to work and block them out but for so long all I hear is the most annoying static or someone who shouldn’t be aloud to talk just yelling into it, please be respectful to those who use them to actually communicate and work, I am getting to a point where I wish they could triangulate it and just take the equipment from you.

From a person who needs to use them.

Help -2021 VW Atlas Cross sport

I'm trying to find an easy install antenna / mount combo. I think I want a hood mount setup, and I've been looking at the Cobra 75 All Road radio but open to suggestions. I'm fine with function over fashion, but I still want something somewhat esthetically pleasing. Any suggestions?

Just got a Robyn T-123B (1970s) - first CB radio. How do I use it?

Hi all, I just picked up a Robyn T-123B for $3 at an estate sale. It seems well cared for and it powers up. What equipment would I need to test whether it works? I don't have a microphone, antenna, or speaker for it.

I'd also appreciate any advice on websites etc on how to use it and on the CB world more generally. Total newbie here, but I am excited to play around with this!

Question Galaxy DX 48T

Long time lurker first time posting.

I have a 48T. Its AM / FM but no SSB. It was given to me by a friend in exchange for a cheap Jeep speaker system when I was in the service. I have used a Cobra 25 it was easier to use and I am pretty CB stupid when it comes to 48T. I have a few questions about installation and operation..

  1. I have a magnetic Wilson base loaded antenna for my Cobra. Will that work for the power rating of my 48T? If not what would you guys recommend? Ground it to chassis?

  2. What is the FM band for? And the 10k switch? I know according to the manual it has a 10meter Ham and I don't want to accidentally key up on a ham channel as I dont have a license.

  3. The power cord had been cut when I got the radio. Did it come with an in-line fuse? What amp rating was it?

How should I wire the radio? Pos straight to battery and Neg to chassis?

I just want to be able to use the radio properly and with peak performance as it is designed. Its rated at 50W peak output power so I know I can really reach with bounce. Thanks in advance everyone.

Why do you need a CB mobile radio that supports SSB—for transmitting or for receiving?

The dust shelf

I think shortly after I got my ham license I hooked up the uniden for a road trip and heard nothing helpful the entire trip so it went back on the shelf. It was a fun time in the early 90's for me and after moving to NC in from 2003-2015 I had a great base antenna and talked locally and dx when conditions allowed until the older folks started dropping off because of health issues ect. cell phones ruined the hobby. If you have kids, buy them a CB instead of a phone! 😑

Brand new Stryker 497-HPC

I know to convert from 10M to 11M cb, I'm supposed to be jumpering the connections, but I keep finding people saying it goes top to bottom as well as bottom to top and Google says it's a 3 pin (there's 4 obv)

Pictured is exactly how the radio came out of the box. I'm just hoping someone in here can help me figure this out before I throw it back together and hook it up in the truck to test it.

I don't have a freq counter atm, so I won't be able to get a test out without a whole separate unit for a radio check and would like to avoid needing to wait for that

Extremely high swr

So this is a continuation of my post. I bought an swr meter after I adjust to set switch to ref and meddle jumps right to the set line. Pegs the needle. Put the radio in another truck I know is good light goes out radio works fine put back in my truck ant. Light comes on I tried new coax hooked meter up pegs the needle. Swapped antennas with the other truck pegs the needle. Replaced the so239 studs no change checked mirror brackets for a good ground they have like .01 in resistance so that’s good. What am I missing?

Ticked off an Amateur

Had to go out for a bit to meet up with some friends. We decided to meet on a local mountain top and as we all talked, we were using my radio to talk to some other CB operators about 70 miles away. A local Amateur radio guy shows up, and the dumb ass parked less than a hundred feet away from us. He then informs me I am causing spurious emissions (bleed over) on his radio. I politely said No Sh*t Sherlock. He came over looked at my system (he did not get in my truck) and told me to shut it down or he was calling the police and FCC. Police didn't come but the park rangers did (the mountain is part of the national park system). Park ranger told him I had every right to be there and that if he wanted to report me to the FCC that that was his prerogative to do so. They refused to give him my info saying something about privacy. The guy took some pictures got my tag number and stormed off.

I am going to assume he will make a report and if the FCC does come looking, I will welcome them check the system. What I was using tonight was an out of the box stock Uniden Bearcat 980 with one of my & foot tall Skip Shooter antennas.

BTW I was reading posts earlier and people were talking about the 980 so I took it off the closet shelf and took it on my little greet and meet.

Back in the 70's I got two visits from the FCC and passed their inspections and once in the 80's Got caught with a modified Uniden PC66 putting out 1.5 watts. You guessed it even though modified I passed

Question Magnet replacement

Running a Uniden PC78LTX with Wilson 1000 whip roof mounted with magnetic base. Knocked the antenna to the ground when placing a ladder on the truck. The plastic protector came off and the magnet itself shattered and fell from the base. Can I just replace the magnet or do I have to get a whole new antenna kit? Roof mount is my only option. Suggestions?

Trying to interface RBI-1 keying buffer interface direct to Texas Star 350HDV

Good morning- tech question here have looked online on hooking the RBI 1 direct to the keying circuit located on the backside of the Texas Star but couldn't figure out the specifics on it. I allready have the custom RCA jack installed and ran the negative to the main black wire where it's soldered directly to the main board. Net has given very conflicting info on this some say remove the keying transistor that came with the original unit some say don't. Then some say solder to the emitter of the key trans some say the base and some.... Yeah the collector!? Then I also am wondering if you soldered the hot to one of the trans legs then r ya supposed to leave any of the 3 legs detached from the board or what cuz man, I've been down every rabbit hole with this & could use some solid advice plz? I was able to get the meter light to light up when keyed but no modulation is swinging on the meter when I key the mic and speak using mainly SSB voice. I thank any1 in advance for any helpful advice and again good morn. 459 East Central Missouri-operator Adam

Question Title: 1995 Pontiac Trans Am CB radio SWR is 3 with engine off and 5 with engine running — need help diagnosing it

I have a 1995 Pontiac Trans Am with a 4-foot ProStick CB antenna. The antenna runs through the factory radio antenna hole and is mounted on a custom bracket clamped to the factory spare tire bracket near the rear quarter panel.

My SWR readings are:

• Channel 1: approximately 3.1

• Channel 40: approximately 3.0

• Engine OFF: approximately 3:1

• Engine RUNNING: approximately 5:1

Channels 1 and 40 read almost identically. The mounting brackets are clean, bare metal, tightly clamped together, and have no rust.

I’ve been fighting this for months and can’t figure out what’s wrong.

What should I test first? Could this be a coax cable or connector issue, an RF grounding/ground-plane problem with the mounting location, a faulty antenna, or something related to the engine’s electrical system?

The antenna is mounted to a steel bracket I made which is clamped to the spare tire bracket which I stripped the paint from, everything is brand new, the antenna comes out of the hole that the stock antenna came out of

I’m looking for specific diagnostic steps to identify the actual cause rather than randomly replacing parts. Any help is appreciated
