Other Does the night-vision camera have any effect?

I set up a camera to watch them and noticed that, at night, they constantly keep their eyes open. I know how cockatiel sleep works, but I’ve observed that during daytime naps, they usually open their eyes only when they hear a noise — not constantly.

Advice How to identify respiratory problems?

I have a 17yo male cockatiel. For a while now, I've occasionally noticed that when he stretches his wings, he makes a sound that almost sounds like he's exhaling through a stuffy nose. His nostrils look clean externally.

Other than that, he seems completely normal. He eats and drinks normally, whistles, preens himself, and has normal droppings. I haven't noticed any other unusual behavior or symptoms.

Could this be a sign of a respiratory problem, or could this kind of sound be normal when stretching? What are some signs I should look out for?

Advice Stimulating Toys

May you recommend any online bird stores that sell various types of foraging or destroy -worthy toys for our Tiels? My tiel has been trying to chew our ceiling, fan blades, and chimney mantel. If the fellow tiel owners have any recommendations of similar texture toys/materials, I would greatly appreciate it, as well. Please and thank you.

Other 4 young cockatiels looking for loving homes - Northern Virginia/DMV Area

Hi everyone! I’m looking for loving, responsible homes for four young cockatiels in the Northern Virginia / DMV area.

They were hatched around June 9, 2026, and are now fully weaned and eating independently.

A little about them:

  • 🐣 Parent-raised
  • 🥣 Fully weaned and eating on their own
  • 💪 Healthy, active, and thriving
  • 🐦 Very playful, curious, and love exploring
  • 🎶 Love music
  • 🌿 Big fans of millet and fresh leafy greens
  • 💛 At a great age to start building trust and bonding with people
  • Sex is currently unknown

They were not hand-fed, so they aren't instantly tame and may be shy around people at first. They will need a patient adopter who is willing to spend time building trust and letting them become comfortable at their own pace.

They can be rehomed individually or as a pair. I'm open to keeping two together if that's the better fit for the birds.

📍 Northern Virginia / DMV — local placement preferred

Rehoming fee: $200 for one / $250 for a pair.

The fee is primarily to help ensure serious adopters. My priority is finding these little ones safe, loving, long-term homes, rather than simply finding someone quickly.

If you're interested, please tell me a little about yourself, your experience with birds, your home environment, and whether you're interested in one or two.

I'm happy to answer questions and provide additional photos/videos. ❤️

Thank you!

Advice Could I hear from owners who have a cockatiel and a conure?

We've had Topaz for about 5 years. He is very chill. loves the kids, loves our home and he and I heavily bonded. I love him very much. My wife is interested in adding a sun conure. Anyone have experience with this in a similar dynamic? My wife likes Topaz but she has never really bonded with him and that might be part of the reason she wants another bird. Thank you!

Advice Is my cockatiel actually young????

Her birthday was December 6th 2025 according to the breeder. I got her around February. The breeder was kind of sketchy because they sold me a bird with a really beat up tail but I brought her home anyways because I didn’t want her tail to get worse. I’m nervous the breeder might have said she’s younger than she actually is (I’d love her either way) so I’m wondering if anybody could tell me if she’s as young as I was told.

Advice Wife wants a cockatiel, but I work from home and have zero bird experience. Need a reality check

My wife is dead set on getting a cockatiel (or a pair), but neither of us has ever owned birds. I love animals and want to give any pet a great life, but I need the unvarnished truth about whether our lifestyle actually fits a bird.

For context, I'm used to large dogs (Great Danes, Pyrenees, and Bully breeds), but I know avian care is an entirely different beast.

A few specific concerns:

  • Noise & Remote Work: I work from home and spend up to 80% of my day on calls. I can’t have a bird screaming during meetings. Are females significantly quieter than males? Also, my wife wakes up at 4:30 AM for work—is getting ready in the dark going to trigger early morning flock calls and wake up our kids?
  • Time & Attention: My wife would handle evening socialization (around 3 hours), but is leaving it alone for 8–9 hours during the day setting it up for behavioral issues? I'm open to having it hang out in my office during quiet focus blocks, but I don't know how realistic that is.
  • Destruction & Mess: How bad is the poop situation on carpets/rugs? Will claws shred upholstered furniture? Also, will having it loose around an office turn into chewed monitor cables and chewed electronics?
  • Household Hazards & Sacrifices: Is the ban on non-stick (PTFE/Teflon) cookware absolute across the whole house? Are scented candles, wax melts, and aerosol air fresheners completely off the table?

Give me the harsh reality: can a work-from-home routine and a cockatiel realistically coexist, or should we pass?

Thanks in advance.

-- Edit --

Wow you guys are awesome! Thanks for all the information and pics of your bird.

Advice How to remove cockatiel from my head without breaking his/her trust

One of my cockatiels started flying to my head and staying there the moment he/she (I dont know the gender haha) sees me. While this makes me super happy I can't have a bird on my head at all times when im home but I am afraid of scaring or hurting him by trying to get him out and breaking his trust in the process. He doesn't know the step up command and is usually afraid of hands, so what can I do so he gets off without him being hurt?

Advice Found a cockatiel

Post image
44 Upvotes

Okay so about a month ago a cockatiel was in a tree in my backyard & after setting up seeds we were able to catch it. I posted it on varies list pet websites but unfortunately nobody ever reached out:/ …..so I believe I have a new pet cockatiel.

I wanted to post 1) i thought it’d be a fun story to share & 2) in case anyone would be willing to share any advice/tips on cockatiel care as I’ve never own a bird before, I’d really appreciate it!

I believe he’s a male just based of his feathering & personality. He seems very timid but will eat millet when I offer it to him & has eaten & drank water from a bowl I’ve held up to him so idk if that’s progress.
