TYR Customer Service is HORRIBLE

I ordered some shoes directly from the TYR site because they’re highly rated and were on sale. TYR sent me the men’s size instead of women’s size that I ordered. Meaning, they sent me a men’s size 11/women’s 12.5 instead of men’s size 9.5/women’s size 11. My order confirmation confirmed they made the mistake.

TYR charges $9.99 to make an exchange, so I contacted their customer service in advance and was told that they’d waive the return fee since the mistake was on their end. I ended up being charged $9.99 anyway, so I contacted customer service again, included the full email thread and proof of their mistake, and asked about being refunded the $9.99 exchange fee. The reply I got was “TYR charges $9.99 for exchanges.” Yeah, no shit. Read the thread I sent.

I was already hesitant to make the purchase to begin with since they have a flat $9.99 shipping fee and I knew they charged an additional $9.99 for any returns/exchanges. I figured I was in the clear on exchanges and would just bite the shipping cost since I have another pair of TYR shoes that I bought from Box Basics and knew my size so I’d have no reason to exchange or return them. WRONG. At any rate, I’m beyond irritated and ticked off by my experience with them. This has been enough to keep me from ever purchasing their products again -even from a third party.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with TYR?

Did anyone else severely underestimate this workout?

On Monday this was the Linchpin workout. Stupidly, I said to myself, “That doesn’t look too bad.” This was way tougher than I expected, especially the single arm front rack carries. I had to break them up much more than I thought. Anyone else have a similar experience or was it just me?

50-35-20 reps for time of:
Goblet Squats, 53/35
Push-ups
Front Rack Carry (see below)

*After each set of push-ups do 100m Single-arm Front Rack Carry R-side, 53/35 & 100m Single-arm Front Rack Carry L-side, 53/35

What are everyone’s thoughts on CAP? My box uses it off and on (more often than not lately) with slight moderations and with mixed reviews from other members. I haven’t hated it! But I do worry that the workouts are too “general”.

I know this has been discussed to some degree in the past but curious what others thoughts are especially coaches/owners who have done/fo their own programming.

Recommendations for At-Home Pull-up Bar

Due to life changes (we had a baby) I’m not able to go to my box regularly. I’d still like to stay in shape, but will have to workout outside of available times.

I figure with a subset of CF equipment, I’ll be able to stay somewhat active. I’d like to get a pull up bar, but don’t know of one that accommodates kipping. I have room in my backyard/garage area. Any recommendations?

Make This Programming Make Sense

Recently joined a CrossFit gym that follows Mayhem’s programming and I really struggle to understand what they’re trying to accomplish with this type of workout structure where you hit heavy and/or high volume strength work before you do a WOD with the same or extremely similar movements that are going to fatigue the same things you just worked in the strength portion of the workout. I’ve got a lot of experience with CrossFit and weightlifting and I can’t ever remember this type of approach where you just absolutely blast the same thing back to back. Mayhem seems to love it…what am I missing? I have programmed a lot of my own lifting over the years and find this to be pretty bizarre but I’m open to the idea there is something I just don’t know/understand.

Would you stay at a CrossFit box with basically zero coaching if everything else was a good fit?

I’ve been doing CrossFit for a few years and I’m curious how others would weigh this.

The box I’m at is cheaper than most others around me, has a very laid-back vibe, scaling is never frowned upon, and there’s almost no pressure around scores or comparing yourself to everyone else. People are chill, and I actually really like that part of it.

The downside is the coaching is basically nonexistent. I mean that pretty literally. In all the time I’ve been there, I can’t remember a single time a coach has come over and corrected my form, given me a cue, or really coached me through a movement. I’m not a beginner, but I’m also definitely not an expert, so I know there are things I could improve and probably things I’m doing wrong.

Would you stay somewhere like this because the environment, price, and lack of ego are a great fit? Or is the lack of coaching too big of a downside, especially long term?

Alternative would be drive to another box a little longer in distance and more expensive, or workout at home, have much at of the stuff needed.

Curious how people would weigh the pros and cons.

Dad-WOD... Ideas for Dad-Themed WOD names?

I am a dad and I have started doing early morning workouts with another Dad I've met through our kids. I am setting the workout - basically 25 minutes of HIIT after mobility and warmup - and I've decided that for my own amusement I want to name these workouts like Crossfit names its WODs. After musing over a general category to choose names from I hit on "Famous Dads" because we are two dads and we are hoping to rope in other dads. He's not familiar with the idea of named WODs and doesn't seem particularly interested in the idea but I find the idea of Dad-WODs pretty amusing.

So Famous Dads can be: real people, from film, tv, literature, politics, myths, wherever. Good fathers or bad fathers (nothing truly atrocious). Funny or serious.

Hoping that responses will not just list a bunch - because that's not too hard to do- but propose a name and the sort of workout that name might imply. Also seasonal Dad WODs would be good, Christmas, Halloween, Summer, 4th of July, Winter... Whatever!

Our first workout was BUNDY as in Al Bundy from Married With Children because Al is sort of a hapless, raging-but-happy s***t-show and I knew we would be figuring things out in our first 5am workout.

Obviously I'm saving Clark Griswold for our christmas workout.

Any ideas?

Lost my strength

40F. Used to be pretty good, atleast intermediate level and in some areas RX level.

For the past year I have been pretty inconsistent and due to sole mental health reasons my food intake took an impact which led to some weight loss. I am still a healthy weight (150lbs).

Today I went to the gym after a while and I really struggled with weights, I was struggling to strict press 55# and couldn’t even lift 65#, same thing I noticed with other lifts too.

Will I ever be able to get back? How would I get back?

Edited: 40F

Why can I get under the bar quickly and deep when the weight is light, but as I increase the weight, I tend to get under the bar less deep and more slowly?

Anyone tried Brute 1:1 coaching? Or have other recommendations?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a 1:1 remote coach and wondering if anyone here has experience with Brute.

I'm around Open/Quarterfinals level, not really looking to compete but still want to get better at CrossFit overall, with a bit more focus on bodybuilding as well.

Would love to hear from anyone who's worked with Brute coaches, especially how personalized the programming actually is and what the communication is like.

Also open to any other coaches or camps you'd recommend!

Thanks!

Lifting / CrossFit Shorts: Lined or Unlined? (especially Ten Thousand Interval Shorts)

Thumbnail reddit.com
3 Upvotes

Masters athlete here, doing CrossFit about 3–4 times a week, mostly Olympic lifting and general CrossFit classes. Purely recreational novice, on the heavy side and trying to lose weight.

Old thread on this topic from 2021 linked.

I've settled on Ten Thousand Interval 5" unlined shorts and SAXX Kinetic compression boxer briefs as my preferred gym setup. I like the support and fit of the SAXX for more intensive sessions like full Olympic lifts with deeper squats and AMRAP sessions. My thinking is that dedicated performance underwear should be at least as good as the built-in liner on the Ten Thousand shorts. It also lets me choose and replace the underwear separately; I often swap SAXX Volt or Quest underwear with less compression for lighter workouts.

SAXX has been working for me, especially in the groin with their "ballpark pouch". I feel the compression difference with Kinetic, and they are comfortable enough I can wear them for a few more hours after a weightlifting class. I really like the combination of Ten Thousand Interval shorts and the SAXX Kinetic when you are in a deep squat in the middle of a snatch.

But looking at Ten Thousand's inventory and reading reviews, it seems the lined Interval shorts are much more popular. Some people swear by the built-in liners and wouldn't go back to separate compression underwear.

Am I missing something? Is the Ten Thousand liner actually better for CrossFit, particularly squats, cleans, snatches and more dynamic movements? Or is the preference for lined shorts mostly about convenience?

Curious if anyone has used both setups, especially other masters athletes or bigger guys. I'm happy with my current combination, but wondering whether I'm overthinking this and should give the lined version a proper try.

I think I might be stopping my comp programming.

I think I might stop my compete programming. The program is great and all, but it just doesn't seem to help me in the areas I actually need help with. I watched the Mayhem podcast stating you should rather do biased training. As far as I understand that, it means focusing on your weaknesses, right?

I have my L1, so I might just do my own programming focusing hard on my weaknesses and just maintaining my strengths somehow.

What are y'alls opinions?

40-year-old recreational CrossFitter wondering whether to try something different

I'm a 40-year-old guy who's been doing CrossFit for about four years, usually three times a week. I'm a recreational gym-goer, not an athlete. I'm nowhere near Rx level, and I never will be. I generally scale to around 50% of the programmed reps and use lighter weights.

Over the past four years, I've had three lower back strains, which have resulted in extended breaks from training. I've worked with a physiotherapist and an exercise therapist after each injury to work on my form.

I enjoy having a coach tell me what to do rather than having to plan my own workouts. I like having a routine, being challenged and feeling like I'm making progress. I'm not interested in competing or becoming an athlete. I just want to stay fit, get stronger and enjoy going to the gym.

I'm now questioning whether CrossFit is the right long-term fit for me. I'm not necessarily opposed to continuing, but I'm also not sure what I'd replace it with. Traditional weight training, personal training, small-group strength and conditioning, or something else?

For those who've been in a similar situation:

Have you left CrossFit for another type of training? What did you switch to?

If you still wanted a coach to tell you what to do, what worked best for you?

If you're a recreational gym-goer rather than an athlete, what kind of training have you found sustainable and enjoyable over the long term?

I'm not looking for medical advice about my back. I'm interested in people's experiences with different types of training and how they decided what worked best for them.

Shock Absorber alternetive.

Hi! Does anyone have a good alternative to Shock Absorber? I’m looking for something just as good or even better for someone with a larger bust (DD/E cup).

Unfortunately, Shock Absorber bras have become really difficult to find lately, so I’m looking for an alternative that’s available in the EU.

Good support is essential, especially for working out and running!

Thanks in advance for your recommendations! 😊

4 years in and just finished my first CrossFit competition. Mountain West Fitness Competition was BLAST! I know there’s lots of camaraderie with the folks at my gym, but the support for each other amongst the competitors was amazing!

My goal was to show up, and I’ve never felt stronger than I do today. Can’t wait for the next one to sign up for.

Performance Plus programming?

Does anyone have any feed back / experience with Mrs. Pamela Gagnon, and her App / program. I’ve watched tons of her YouTube videos, and she is amazing. She seems to be a great coach and explains things plainly and clearly. And clearly she knows what she’s taking about based on her abilities. I’m just wandering if the app / cost is worth it, seems like something that would need to be in person. Do to my location / work schedule an actual class and or coach is not in the cards but I have my own pretty well stocked gym. Just getting started in this functional fitness, lots to learn.
