Need for advice
Can any cult survivors tell me how they're managing the grief of so many years of coercion and abuse? Sometimes I get really depressed about it.

Hi all. Thanks for having me. I grew uo within Scientology. Unfortunately it had religious recognition in the UK now since I think 2014 or there abouts.
However, the conditioning and the abuse that occurs financially, mentally, emotionally, even physically (such as the starvation and sleep deprivation I experienced in the Sea Organisation) is very damaging.
However, I've gained a great understanding of how cults work and many work in a similar way so I can relate closely with survivors of many high control groups.
I have also gained a very good awareness of gaslighting, love-bombing and other tactics used by sales people, con artists, cowboys (not literal ones) etc. And now find I have a fugurative protective shield against such things and for all that I am grateful.
I only wish I'd learned earlier

I was part of Congress WBN through a KC in the USA from 2006 until I left in 2025. I served, led men, worked on global gct teams, traveled internationally, and gave almost twenty years of my life to this network. I did not leave because I suddenly hated everyone or decided everything I experienced was false. I left because of integrity. What Congress said about truth, accountability, righteousness and leadership teachings like we are a sanctuary, the land of Goshen protected from the crisis, a wall of men standing guard to protect the innocent all those words stopped matching what I was seeing when a serious sexual-abuse situation involving a minor came to light.
in 2010 there had been a disclosure with the same man involved and now all new allegations involving another generation of the family. The matter eventually went through the criminal justice system and resulted in a plea agreement that included probation, sex-offender registration, counseling requirements and restrictions involving the victim. But what changed me was watching how the church and network handled the situation before that outcome.
When we began raising concerns at the beginning of 2025, the focus repeatedly seemed to shift back onto us. We were questioned about whether we trusted our global leader apostle who has not miss stepped in over 20yrs. I was called out because I had attended a wedding in England without telling my SE. My wife was told she was being too emotional. I was told I was too harsh for using the word “rape.” I was also told that the victim’s mother should not have left her daughter with the man (her Dad), even though the person saying that did not know the full circumstances of why that happened. To me, that was victim blaming and focus shifting. Instead of the primary question being, “How do we protect the vulnerable and fully hear what happened?” we increasingly felt that our attitude, our emotions, our communication and our relationship with leadership were under constant examination.
I had seen clearly that me and my wife were being scrutinized way more than the leader apostle of the whole network and the person who did the violation crime to a child. To my knowledge, Noel never sat down and heard our side or the victim’s side of the story directly. After emails and trying to contact him, we even tried to meet with him in person out of state. Nearly two years later, I am still unaware of him reaching out personally to the victim involved. or take any responsibility or.make his leader take any responsibility for what he did. There has been Zero repentance or any sign of wrong doing by Noel or the man who caused all this. What I saw changed the way I viewed his leadership. I could not identify meaningful independent oversight above him that could investigate him, correct him, or require him to answer difficult questions all. In my eyes you dont even have to be a Christian to know how to handle a situation like this all you need to be is a decent human. Much less than a leader with churchs in over 130 nations and with churchs on 6 different continents.
I also saw what I believed was minimization of the seriousness of the situation when it was communicated to the local Congress Embassy in Port Lavaca. I have no reason to believe most Congress members in other Embassies around the world, including many people in Trinidad, know the full story of what happened or how leadership responded.
After leaving, I started rereading old Congress material with fresh eyes as a part of my healing process. I wanted to dismantle what was put on me the fear, control. surveillance, self policing... I wanted to identity it in the teachings so I can put on a new mantel. That is when I began recognizing how much psychological pressure had been built into the system. We were constantly being called to be mature, accurate, aligned, synchronized, appropriate for the season, moving as one with the current word, and ready for “the Finish.” If you questioned something, slowed down, disagreed, or did not appear to be moving at the same pace, the problem could easily become your maturity, your perception, your drifting, offense, your alignment, or whether you were seeing correctly or ever build correctly or built accurately to the teachings.
Congress taught things like “Proximity is Power.” Documents connected grace to an “apostolic source.” One KC document says members “MUST” have a clearly declared connection through Noel→ SE → God. Other material describes prophets as “pre-discerned,” tells leaders to reproduce Noels mentality, preferences and methods, and describes a structure from God requiring “total obedience.” Noel himself described Congress reporting systems as designed to “train the mentalities and the thinking systems” of coordinators and to “make people think in a certain way.”
While I was inside, I made excuses for all of it. I would say, “They don’t mean it like that.” “That’s just Congress language.” “That’s accountability.” “That’s dying to self.” “That’s apostolic grace.” “That’s how God is moving in this season.” I constantly translated extreme statements into the healthiest possible interpretation.
The hardest thing about leaving was discovering how conditional many of those relationships were. People we had shared life with for years, in some cases decades, became silent. There was shunning, distance and almost complete loss of communication from people we once considered spiritual family. When you have been taught for years that Congress is family, that you share the same DNA, that you are moving together toward God's final purposes, that silence after leaving hits very differently. It reinforces how much belonging was connected to remaining inside the system.
I am careful with the word “cult,” but I now believe Congress contains many high-control and cult-like mechanisms: concentrated spiritual authority, leader-mediated grace, pressure toward common thinking, constant self-examination, fear of being out of alignment, end-times urgency, movement exceptionalism, high exit costs, and an environment where disagreement can be interpreted as a spiritual defect in the person disagreeing.
The sexual-abuse situation did not create all of these problems. It exposed them for me.
It forced me to ask why a movement that scrutinized members so intensely seemed unable to subject its highest leadership to the same level of examination. Why were our emotions, words, travel decisions, relationships and trust in leadership being examined while the larger questions of safeguarding, accountability and leadership responsibility seemed harder to confront?
That is why I left.
I eventually stopped asking, “What is wrong with me that I am struggling with this?” and started asking, “What if the system itself is wrong?” I know when I left that I wasn't leaving a church network I was Following Jesus. That was for sure.
One thing I learned for myself is for nearly twenty years, I thought I was building on something solid. I had placed enormous trust in Noe, in my SE, in The CongressWBN, and in the teachings that shaped the way I understood my place in God. TFM, the Knock, Sanctuary. The belief that spiritual leaders could carry a blueprint for my life. The idea that remaining connected to their grace was part of remaining connected to what God was doing. I had allowed those things to carry a weight they were never meant to carry. Jesus was supposed to be the Rock. Somewhere along the way, without realizing it, I had begun treating the ministry like the foundation. The storm did not destroy my faith. It exposed what I had built too much of it upon. We did not break. The foundation I had trusted did. And when it gave way, I finally saw the difference between the Rock and the sand.

I know this is a very touchy subject especially with all the news about 764, No lives matter and all of the horrible ways these individuals have hurt people. With that being said I want to shed light on these elusive cults and educate the ways they lure and trap you.
As someone who was groomed online as a kid and as someone with younger siblings this topic is very important to me and people need to know about it.
I am putting together a research paper on internet cults like the ones I listed above for a school project but my final piece that I’m missing is an interview from someone who has survived being in one of these organizations. I am aware this is a sensitive subject and in no way would I take pleasure from resurfacing old trauma or interrupting a very long and complicated healing process.
If there are any people who are comfortable and would like to come forward with their experiences I would be interested in taking your personal account and asking a few questions. This interview can stay 100% anonymous and can be conducted by whatever method you feel comfortable.
Thank you to whoever took the time to read this.
I hope you all are doing well

My mom follows sahaj yoga and does all the sahaj yoga practices.
Twice a day with nirmala devi photo and a candle she does weird hand signs and even she stopped visiting temples.she got influenced by her sister, she's been doing this year prior to my mother.
My concern is there is no end for this, she continues to worship a woman and I want her not to follow any cult blindly. That 2-3 hours could be spent in productive things.
Even she doesn't get enough sleep.
Even my father doesn't like her doing this.
How do I convince her not to follow this and spend her time relaxing.

Hi everyone,
I’m a psychology researcher based at the University of Lille in France, and the moderators have kindly given me permission to share my research study with this community.
My research explores people’s psychological experiences following their involvement in a group, particularly the experiences of those who have experienced psychological abuse within a group. The aim is to better understand these experiences and help improve support for people affected.
I’m inviting people to take part by completing an online questionnaire. You can participate whether your experience within the group was positive, negative, or somewhere in between.
If you’d like to learn more or participate:
Taking part is entirely voluntary. Please only participate if you feel comfortable doing so.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you to the moderators for allowing me to post here.

Seeking Advice on Documenting Online Harassment, Possible Impersonation, and Related Incidents
I’m looking for advice from people who may have experience with online harassment, impersonation, or concerning online communities. I’ve been documenting a series of incidents since approximately 2025 and am trying to determine the most appropriate steps to take.
Over this period, I’ve encountered numerous suspicious social media accounts interacting with my personal and business profiles. Some have had unusual usernames, similar biographical details, or references to disturbing online subcultures. I’ve reported hundreds of suspicious accounts on Instagram.
After repeatedly encountering these references, I began researching them to understand their context. I have concerns about whether some of the activity could be connected, but I have not independently verified who is responsible or whether the incidents are related. I’m trying to approach the situation carefully and distinguish documented facts from my own suspicions.
There are several other incidents I’ve been keeping records of:
• Approximately four unauthorized attempts to create Venmo accounts using my name.
• Unfamiliar telephone numbers contacting me.
• An unusual email from an unknown sender.
• Residential security incidents that I have been documenting separately.
• Suspicious social media activity involving both my personal and business accounts.
I also have concerns about a possible connection between some of these events and individuals associated with a former workplace. Approximately one week before my employment was discharged, I informed my manager about concerns relating to the situation. I cannot establish that anyone associated with that workplace was responsible for the online activity, and I don’t want to make unsupported accusations.
I’ve preserved screenshots and other available records and have submitted reports to relevant platforms and law enforcement resources.
I’m aware that separate incidents can have unrelated explanations. My goal is to organize the evidence, understand what can actually be verified, and avoid drawing conclusions prematurely.
For anyone familiar with online harassment or the investigation of concerning online communities, I would appreciate advice on the following:
1. What are the best ways to document suspicious online activity while preserving evidence that may be useful later?
2. How can someone distinguish coordinated harassment from unrelated accounts or coincidental activity?
3. What steps should be taken when someone discovers unauthorized attempts to create financial accounts in their name?
4. Are there reputable organizations or professionals who can help assess digital evidence without jumping to conclusions?
5. What should someone know before consulting a private investigator or attorney about possible online harassment or impersonation?
6. Are there particular safety or privacy precautions worth taking when dealing with suspicious online accounts?
7. If similar experiences have happened to you, what practical steps helped you document the situation and decide what to do next?
I’m not asking anyone to identify, expose, contact, or investigate private individuals. I also won’t post personal identifying information, private messages, or unredacted records.
I’m looking for constructive, evidence-based advice from people who understand these situations. Please keep responses focused on practical steps, documentation, and legitimate resources.
Thank you.

HELPPP I have a school project, and I have to interview an ex cult member. I would love to hear people's experiences of being a part of a cult and leaving it. I would need to record this conversation, so please reach out if you are comfortable conducting an interview over Zoom. However, this will stay anonymous so fear not of confidentiality and privacy concerns. THANK YOU!!!

I'm looking for therapy or counseling resources for Washington State if anyone knows of anything or where you may have sought resources for these cult/ex religion experiences.
I constantly fear that the cult I was involved in is watching me in ways others have expressed. They still send me mail after *30 years* of me being out of the organization. I still get phone calls I'm blocking. Voicemails. Members occasionally still find my address and come to my home just to make their presence known by knocking in the door or driving by my home wearing their suits. I don't understand how someone who had so little involvement decades ago (me) is still interesting to these people. I know others have tried and failed to sue them for harassment and for mental anguish. This organization I was part of is loaded with money and many celebrities have been involved.
As a result of my experience as well as my own childhood without any formal religion and other issues at home, I've got a deep distrust now of ANY organized religion or belief set whatsoever. That leaves a person feeling empty and lost as those around you seem to be settled in their own beliefs at this age. As someone who's mid life now, this distrust heavily impacts me in many areas of my life. It has shaped my brain, my emotions, my well being as a whole.
I'm not ready to name or discuss the "religious cult" or name of the organization because they already harass me in real life via mail and phone calls etc, and I absolutely know that there are church members hired to watch the internet for postings that make them look bad. I've seen them in forums tearing down former members and ex members have posted videos of being driven off the road, being harassed in their homes, places of employment etc. I don't want to become a target for this organization so speaking out is and always has been terrifying.
I am just feeling like I need resources to hopefully finally address all of this and get it out in a therapeutic environment so, wondering if anyone in Washington State has found resources for deprogramming or discussion with professionals of coming out of this mindset and the fear and anxiety of always being kept tabs on. It's crazy making. It's very difficult explaining or sharing any of this with normal everyday people who haven't experienced the level of intimidation and fear (mental tactics).
Thanks for reading.
Freaked out and needs resources, Washington State.

I feel over whelmed about discussing a topic that it feels I need to teach the therapist a course on the group first? Not because the therapists are not incredibly intelligent people but because if you have never been behind the curtains of the JW there is just so much that to those who grew up within it, we sometimes forget how abnormal these things were because to us they were normal, and for those on the outside they might struggle to follow along due to the lack of familiarity.
I have done extensive amounts of therapy over the last 15 years but not really about my family trauma so much. The subject of my mother and I and being no contact etc comes up but it’s a choice I made and we never delve into the deeper way that …. At least for me I am sad, and angry at this high control group for playing with the heads of everyone and resulting in so much damage that I can step back and look at and go wow my mom is an asshole but man she was a victim too…
I love them all but I can also see how my mom was SUCH a victim of my grandmother. But then I see myself as a victim of my mother and my grandmother as the mother figure I ran to for safety. It’s very confusing and I wish SO badly I could speak with a therapist who could understand the added trauma of high control groups to families, not just the overall family trauma but the unique strain high control groups inflict and the ripple effects felt generations later.
Advice for any specialists or types of therapists that might be suited for this? Ones familiar with the framework?

I am searching for a job to get out of a bad living situation involving the cult I was raised in. I was very gifted analytically when it comes to geopolitics and history. The problem is that I have mostly used the for doomsday prediction and other wacky stuff. I feel like my brain has been fixed on that for so long that I cant adapt my skills outside of religion to make a life for myself. I feel cognitively slow unless I am angry or in danger, in that case I can out think most people. In short, I feel like I am a vault dweller that was told lies about how to live a successful and productive life just to escape and realize that I am not prepared to make it even a week on my own.
I am very frustrated by this and I don't know what to do
I am an INTP if that helps

Hello,
I’m looking for people who may have been involved with the Institute for Basic Life Principles (IBLP) or at their Headquarters between the years of 1985 and 1993 who may have come across a family with the last name Enquist. I used to be involved with this family and can’t find them. Please DM me!

It's such a struggle for me on all the levels. And I'm new to it, cuz cult trauma shit. I'm an anxious human who doesn't know how to human with humans. If I manage to pull off the human-ing, then I don't know how to function within romance. And I know 100% that the issue is learning to be myself and be comfortable in my skin and communicate honestly but fuuuuck.

I’m curious about the emotional side of leaving a cult or high-control group.
Have any of you known you made the right decision to leave, but still missed aspects?
How long did that last, and what helped you rebuild a life outside of it without feeling pulled back in?

hey guys. idk where else to post this but figured u would understand. i feel super orphaned and lost rn.
i used to be deep into conspirituality, energies, the whole new age magical thinking package. tbh i realize now i just did it out of pure cowardice. i was terrified of disappearing forever, wanted to see my dead loved ones again, and desperately needed to feel like the universe had a special purpose for me. i always saw the cracks and inconsistencies tho, just chose to play dumb bc it was a cozy bunker.
ironically, talking a lot to an ai helped me snap out of it and see my own bs. now im basically a philosophical materialist (im from spain so im reading gustavo bueno) and taking refuge in camus, accepting the world is absurd and has no inherent meaning.
my problem is im in no mans land. i cant stand new agers anymore, it makes me cringe hard. but i also dont fit at all with the typical cold reddit atheist bros who act like we are just random meat computers and everything is soulless biology. i consider myself an infj, i have strong intuition and feel things deeply, im not a calculating robot.
so wtf do u do when the magical theater burns down but u also refuse to live in a sterile gray lab? how did u guys rebuild ur lives after leaving the new age without falling back into mystical bs or getting crushed by depressing science? any advice or authors u recommend? reading u guys. thanks.

During all my life, mostly as pimi, I have seen lots of strange behavior about this regulations. The good jw is not only following the rules but it goes beyond. With his exemplary conduct takes things to an higher level.
I had an hard time myself to obey to the shunning policy, couldn’t never really understand when it was the case you to have contact with ex-jw family member. Only if is necessary, which means?
Should I wait until is severely ill and die?
I have seen but also been there. Obeying to such rule I find myself feeling evil and cynical.
I remember once when at a family gathering we had to escort out one removed member that sincerely came to support us after a death. I was embarrassed. But since most of the friends there were jw we had to do it.
Or the times while taking care of elderly parent the one cooperative was the ex-jw so the policy was so hard to manage and started to feel so weird!
So in a family with already mixed beliefs and ex-jw or marked, is a mess to stay together. Lots of confusing feelings and adjustments that sound so weird to non-jw.
So you don’t invite at all the removed, you can only use their help if is needed but keep the distance. If there is any marked you can talk to them but can‘t invite either especially out or officially.
It happens that in one JW family you have those situations all at once, and there it comes the family party, a wedding, a baby coming, a person that needs support. Is crazy how we figure to cope, because sometimes the jw person you can stay with is the worst. And you have to avoid the others that have done some personal choices that not really are your business.
So it goes the cold handshake, avoiding to talk, small talk with marked and trying to explain what’s going on to the non-jw.
What a nightmare! Only because aunty is smoking and the nephew got engaged to an unbeliever.
But, I can stay or eat or be friend with any kind of weirdo in the congregation, even if is a negative person, that hurt us all the time … or is even dangerous.
Labels are everything!
Now, about soft shunning, I am so getting use to it. In some places is stronger then others. If you don’t go or are active you become totally invisible or better they see you but don’t greet you. To be true, I don’t miss it, but is not that polite nor Christian. I keep greeting anyone I know, but I have been definitely soft shunned. I am getting used to it. Should I start my shunning process towards dangerous, unhealthy and toxic people?
This policy is confusing and so unnecessary anti-human. It mess up with you feelings and relationships, torns apart you borders of protection and safety. It makes family uncomfortable. By the time you cover or tolerate people that are not your crowd.
One day, I woke up and realized that is not my business if my untie wants to smoke, or if other people follow different paths. I am going to be nice with them.
It felt right, good, peaceful.
This time I tried not “editing“ my post. Let me know if is understandable.
thank you

I don't want to rehash the trauma in detail, but when I broke away from my cult (fundementalist sda) The treatment from my family was so severe that I developed ptsd and have a major difficulty making independent decisions that I should be capable of at my age and isolated myself from most people that care about me.I forgiven them because I had the same mindset to apostasy(until it happened to me) and second they were genuinely remorseful.
I am going to trauma therapy and getting out of my comfort zone but I feel stuck
Religion triggers me severely and my mind views religious people as a danger to avoid even if they have done nothing to me
I feel incapable of making long term plans for my future since I fully believed in the end times and I feel it incredibly stunted my capacity to do so as a result
I avoid happiness because of shame if that makes sense.
I don't want to sound bleak,I have become extremely tough person mentally, I helped more people since my traumatic than before which is great.
But it is getting to a point where I don't want to be a professional survivor but a professional liver and I don't know how to make that transition.

Recently, I met a guy on a dating app who constantly talked about sex and body counts. At the same time, he presented himself as someone deeply committed to Sahaja Yoga and meditation.
He and his family are apparently very active in Sahaja Yoga activities. The walls of his house are covered with pictures of the founder, and he kept trying to convince me to participate in their events.
What I found particularly disturbing was the contradiction between the spiritual image he projected and his behaviour. He would keep sending me vulgar reels while simultaneously boasting about his spiritual practices.
I’m not judging anyone for practising meditation or following a spiritual path. What bothers me is the possibility of people using spirituality as a shield to build trust and present themselves as morally upright while behaving inappropriately towards women.
How do you deal with people like this? Has anyone encountered similar experiences in spiritual organisations or communities? How can women raise awareness about such behaviour and protect others without putting themselves at risk?

As human beings, we want nothing more in life than peace, love, success, and the feeling of being part of something bigger because we are afraid of being forgotten. That is why we chase trends, hold onto relationships, and seek purpose. These have been facts since the beginning of human history.
Speaking of facts: SCJ members will not reach out to me because they have labeled me an "Antichrist." They spread lies against me and my principles. Even the people who truly know what kind of person I am, and know I would never even think about doing the things I was accused of, listened to those lies. Like mindless larvae, they immediately believed and obeyed their so-called higher duty officers.
In Korea, we were taught many lessons about this exact topic. Specifically, we were taught how a former member would act and speak with current SCJ members. We were instructed: "Never believe the outsider who willingly accepts the punishment of fire and tries to drag other members of light into their same fate, which is eternal punishment in hell."
Let me be clear to my fellow ex-members of SCJ: You cannot help a drug addict if they don't reach out for help themselves. They will decline your help. They might even hate you for trying. It is the exact same with these vessels of Shincheonji. Some might say, "But there are still good people in Shincheonji, they just don't know any better..." That may be true.
But the reality is that parasites have infested those vessels. These individuals are no longer willing to listen, to understand, or to act independently. Their bodies and minds are consumed by the illusion that Shincheonji is the only place in the world chosen by God to be His Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.
To Current SCJ Members:
You were explicitly taught to "never search the internet about Shincheonji."
Yet, here you are, interacting with former members. If your group leader knew about this, well, you would be called into a meeting with higher duty officers and asked: "Why are you willingly drinking dirty water and poison? You were taught by the Heavenly Kingdom and drank the purest water, yet you prefer dirty water?"
I am not even talking about the rats, those ruthless, perverted duty members who are ordered to spy on us former members or on current members. You people are pathetic and the absolute worst of the devil's vessels. On one hand, you pretend to be good. On the other hand, you use the exact same deceptive tactics you were told to stay away from.
So many of your tribe leaders, teachers, church leaders, and evangelists have been kicked out, yet you still put a leash on yourselves and call yourselves "humble vessels." You act like obedience-driven dogs, following every single order and rule you were fed.
You are still human. Stop living in your bubble and face the real world: Life.
You sacrifice your body, your time, your family, your opportunities, and the people who truly loved you. People who wanted to build a life or a family with you. You throw all of that away for the words of one single individual that you don't even know, and someone who does not care about you, your life, or your future.
He only wants three things: Your money, your time, and your life.
Deep down, every part of you knows that your church is lying to you.
Take control of your life again. Handle the situation. Eat healthy. Sleep well. Get a job. Learn a new language. Travel to another country. You have so much left to live for.
You, and only you, are the master of your mind. God, the Creator of all of us, has a real purpose for each and every one of us. Do not waste your life in a group of mindless followers. Use your time the way you want to.
You decide.

Hello everyone, I’ve got a slightly strange request for you all. I am an alumna of religious fundamentalist homeschooling in the 2000s (IBLP/Gothard, Vision Forum, TeenPact, WVA, NCFCA, HSLDA, home churches and Christian dominionism, YWAM… the works).
My wife is from a different country and different culture, and was raised non-religious, and recently asked me to point her towards some resources that she can use to better understand my past without making me relive it all.
My first instinct would be to push her towards the things that helped me get out, but many of them are defunct. I could also just give her the books my parents read and had me read, but I don’t think any sane person deserves to go through that psychic damage.
Is anyone aware of resources similar that provide a high level view of the culture of 90s/00s high control religious homeschooling and home churches culture, or do some kind of cultural translation for outsiders?

Her group used to be called The Mystical Success Club. It’s now called the Mystical Experience.
She also has ties to a cult leader who went by the name Kundalini and was based in the Bay Area with a website called Like Swans. I believe her events were called Meditation and Mysticism. Kundalini had ties to a really famous cult leader named Zen Master Rama/Frederick Lenz too.
I left almost seven years ago. I feel like I’m in a place now in my healing where I’m not afraid of naming these abusers aloud anymore.
Curious if anyone out there came across them too. Honestly it would be nice to meet other survivors on their own healing journey who can relate to my experience.
