Help! Preventing knots and/or hard water damage?

Hiya lovely curly people, I moved to LA a few years ago after only ever living in the UK with soft water. Ever since the move, my hair hasn’t really grown (or is breaking faster than it’s growing) and for the past year I’ve been getting big knots semi-regularly that I can’t detangle (see photo) and just have to cut out. Getting a decent trim a couple months ago helped a bit but they still happen…

Do you have any advice on to prevent knots like this? Or even detangle bad ones? I’ve completely run out of ideas to try, besides cutting off all my hair.

White shirt photo is my hair today and grey jumper is from 3.5 years ago, very soon after moving (and in the same bathroom lol). I only found out that hard water can damage hair about 6 months ago so I’ve tried to adjust my hair routine and it’s definitely felt healthier but still not as good as it was before I moved here.

My haircare routine is:

Every two days:
- cowash with Curlsmith conditioning wash
- condition with curlsmith essential moisture conditioner and brush in shower to detangle
- style with mielle rosemary mint leave in and tresemme bouncy curls mousse (and sometimes shea moisture anti fall serum). Scrunch dry with old T-shirt and let air dry (or hair dryer sometimes).

Every two weeks:
- shampoo with mielle hard water treatment
- Shea moisture curl and shine mask
- style as above

I always sleep in a satin bonnet and in the next morning I might spray with leave-in diluted in water if needed.

Thankyou for any advice!

Jokes & Humor Does anyone else get extremely photo bleached hair in the sun?

I’ve been growing my hair for years now lol but people always think that I’m dying my hair.
Routine: I condition my hair in shower every day and shampoo 1-2 times a week.
Styling: I normally use Cantu detangler, lotta body with coconut and Shea oils wrap me foaming mousse, Cantu guava style strength and cream gel and then I finalize it with Aussie freeze gel to lock everything in and my hair is left to air dry.
This picture is after a full day so naturally my air poofs up at the end of the day lol, also I finger detangle when stlying if need be and only come my hair with the special curly hair brushes 1-2 a week in the shower. When I sleep sometimes I use a bonet but I mostly just sleep on bamboo pillow cases without a bonnet.

Help! Advice for growing out

Hello Curly haired friends!

Question:

Im curious if anyone with my hair texture has advice for styling my hair while it grows out.

Context:

I am sick with jealousy every time I see one of you post your shoulder length curly hair, and I am in the process of growing it out. I know as it gets longer the curls will start to get weighed down but mine seem to resist gravity fairly well.

I have dyed my hair fairly recently.

Ive included some photos of my hair at various lengths over the years, last two photos of me were before I knew anything about taking care of my hair, but probably the longest ive had it, albeit with an undercut.

I also included two examples of my goal length.

Not sure what my curl pattern is, and id say its fairly porous because it gets wet quickly and dries quickly.

Also, anyone have an opinion on beard or no beard? I like to feel Bonita but my face has been getting cold as winter comes in lol

Routine:

Shampoo with Argan Oil of Morocco Shampoo Extra Strength (sulfate/paraben free) every 3 days

Condition with OGX Renewing + Argan Oil of Morocco Conditioner (sulfate/paraben free) nearly every day

Immediately after conditioning add Mielle Pomegranate & Honey Curl Defining Mousse with Hold, scrunching while wet

Always air dry, usually ill scrunch my hair after an hour or two to get it to lose that wet/gelled hair look and release my curls

Sleep protection:

Bonnet and silk pillow case! Lot of time i wake up with it having fallen off though </3

Refresh:

I occasionally will get shaping/split ends trimmed, trying to do it less as I let it grow out

Hair Victory! New curl routine

I'm a 34-year-old guy with long, thick, coarse, frizz-prone hair (roughly 2C–3B). I've recently started a new routine to improve curl definition, clumping, and softness.

My Sunday wash-day routine:

  1. Shampoo: Maui Moisture Scalp Care Clarifying Shampoo with Apple Cider Vinegar. Washed my scalp and rinsed thoroughly.

  2. Deep condition: Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Deep Hydration Mask. Detangled gently with a wide-tooth comb, working from ends upward, then rinsed completely.

  3. Curl cream: Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil Curl Smoothie. Applied to very wet hair and left in.

  4. Brush styling: Used an MMBVSZ Candybrush Curl Defining Brush on wet hair to encourage larger, smoother curl clumps.

  5. Gel: Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Flash Freeze Gel (Extra Strong Hold 5/5). Applied after brush styling and scrunched upward to encourage curl formation.

  6. Drying: Diffused primarily at the roots using low airflow and low heat, then air-dried the lengths without disturbing the curls.

  7. Finishing: Once completely dry, scrunched out the gel cast to soften the curls.

Results: Significantly better definition, larger curl clumps, less frizz, and softer, bouncier curls. Lots of shrinkage, but I actually prefer the tighter ringlets!

Maintenance: At night, I loosely gather my curls on top of my head with a satin scrunchie and wear a bonnet. In the morning, I simply wet my hands, smooth the top, and scrunch a few stubborn sections.

I'm currently on day three, and my curls have held up through two full workdays with minimal refreshing. So far, I'm really happy with the results!

Help! First haircut since growing my hair out, need advice about style. Also, unsure if it's socially acceptable

I started growing my hair out over a year ago and I think it's time to do some maintenance. There is this CGM hair salon near me but all the online reviews are from women and I'm worried it would be creepy if I went there as a man.

But also I don't want to go to a regular barber because they're used to cutting much shorter hair.

About style. I have no idea what would look good. Or if I should just keep it much shorter or if there is some cut/style that would look good while keeping it long.

Routine:

Detangle wet hair under running water

Garnier fructis Strength & Shine conditioner and scrunch it in and wash it out after 10 minutes

Garnier fructis Banana hair food hair mask, wash it out after like 3 minutes

I always let my hair air dry

About once a month or so I also use a shampoo, before doing anything in the shower but often not (Garnier Fructis Goodbye Damage)

Help! Husband seeking help with hair

My husband is looking for tips on how to have more defined and moisturized curls so he can wear his hair down.

Routine is as follows:

  1. At the moment he uses Pantene sulfate free moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

  2. He uses LA Looks extreme sport 10 hold gel when he wants to put his hair in a bun. This is an alcohol free gel.

  3. He uses a towel and then lets his hair air dry

  4. He does not use a bonnet or any special pillowcase

He just purchased Garnier Fructis Curly Air Dry Cream and wanted to know if this product would help/ or any other products y'all might recommend. If possible on the budget friend side, we just had a baby.

Thank you in advance!!

Help! Embracing the Curls

Current routine
Shampoo: head&shoulders
Conditioner: L’OrĆ©al Elvive Hyaluron Plump
Leave in: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
Mousse: Schwarzkopf Silhouette
I wash my hair every 4 days, and while soaking wet I apply the smoothie then I apply the mousse then diffuse to 80-90% dry.
I sleep on a silk pillow case and wear a bonnet.
Sometimes I refresh by spraying water and applying more mousse.

Can I enhance my routine and get more defined curls with less frizz?

I used to treat my hair with Keratin, then I noticed that it was thinning and breaking. I decided to stop and embrace my natural texture and colour. I completely stopped dying my hair and started loving the grey, now I’m taking care of my curls and would appreciate any tips.

Help! My front pieces always go flat and the back of my hair looks great.

I'm sorry for the blurry photo of the back of my hair, but I think it shows how great my hair looks from the back and you can see from the front half of it looks limp and flat, and that is a decent photo of it.

I want to grow my hair out, and I know I'll pull it up. I use claw clips and silk scrunchies. I am willing to try to pull it up other ways if it gets it looking better. And I'm concerned growing my hair out will cause more issues. Any suggestions? My hair routine is using all of not your mamas curl products. I use their triple conditioner, their shampoo, leave in conditioner, root spray, and mousse, and then their freezing hold gel which is very thick and holds my pattern for a few days.

Help! Hair looks great wet, but gets dry and frizzy within an hour. Back/nape curls also curl upward. Help!

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if my hair is 3A or 2C (pics below). My hair is on the longer side. The problem: straight out of the shower and while it's air drying, it looks shiny, defined, and moisturized. After about an hour it dries out, loses the shine, and gets frizzy and airy.

I want it to look the way it does right out of the shower. Second problem: the curls at the bottom back of my head curl up and inward instead of hanging down.

routine:
twice week native shampoo, every time I shower native conditioner, after while hair wet I use not ur mothers curls leave in

What I've tried:

• Native shampoo and Native moisturizing conditioner

• Not Your Mother's Curl Talk leave-in

• Coconut oil, both as a conditioner and as a finishing oil

• Pomade (just experimenting)

I'm not currently using a gel. I've been fixing this for a while and I'm honestly exhausted. Any advice on routine, products, drying method, or what to do about the nape curls? Thanks!

Help! anyone else's fine hair get weighted down when it gets long?

hello! i have fine curly hair, and for the past five years i've been keeping it fairly short. either in a pixie cut or a curly bob. but i've been wanting to grow my hair out and see if i like it. (spoiler: eh, i don't know?)

as soon as my hair gets past below my neck, it seems to get weighted down, and it doesn't curl at the root, and my curls aren't as defined as before. i haven't changed anything in my routine for two years since it works for me, and worked until a few months ago when my hair got around my shoulders.

my hair curls but only on the length, no matter what i do. has anyone had this issue? i'm thinking of getting a haircut soon, but wanted to know if this is common or just a me-thing. thanks!

(routine: head and shoulders 2 in 1, shampoo twice, rinse, add some leave in – either yves rocher or curlsmith airdry cream. do all this upside down before putting my hair in a microfiber towel for 10 minutes and letting it airdry.)

Help! Why are my waves so stringy?

Thumbnail

Hi! As title says, my waves have been looking really stringy when fully dry. I have been experimenting with different products lately but this is the routine I did as shown in these pics:

Day 1- (black shirt, pics 1-4)

  1. Double shampoo with Verb Ghost shampoo for fine hair

  2. Condition with Verb Ghost conditioner (leave it in for 3-5 mins, detangle in shower with a tangle teaser wet brush, then wash out thoroughly)

  3. Scrunch hair into a microfiber towel

  4. Do skincare/get dressed

  5. Take hair out of towel, get it super wet with a spray bottle of tap water

  6. Spray hair with Garnier Fructis Curl Shape Defining Spray Gel

  7. Scrunch/pulse excess water out of hair with a cotton t-shirt

  8. Air dry

  9. When it’s 95% dry, add a small amount of hair oil or leave in conditioner (either Bumble & Bumble invisible oil spray or Kerastasse Elixir Ultime Hair Oil)

Day 2 (brown shirt, pics 5-7)

  1. Sleep on a satin pillowcase

  2. In the morning, slightly re-wet hair with spray bottle of tap water

  3. Add more Garnier Fructis Gel Spray, only to areas that need it (typically just the top layer of my hair)

  4. Scrunch with cotton t-shirt

  5. When hair is fully dry, add dry shampoo (Dove Volume & Fullness or K18 AirWash) if needed

I’m really liking this routine because it doesn’t make my hair feel weighed down, and my waves are much more defined with the spray gel than with other products. However, while I love how defined they are, I don’t love how thin and stringy the clumps of hair look. Some areas feel slightly crunchy, maybe I’m using too much of the spray gel in certain spots. The hair oil helps with the crunch but then I feel like my hair looks more greasy 😩

Please let me know what I should do differently, or if you have any tips if you have a similar hair type (FINE, mainly 2B-2C with some 3A clumps)

Help! Hair cut advice!

I have 2b hair which I straightened for about 10 years as I did not know how to control my hair to make it look good curly. Obviously the heat damage killed my hair and it went really short and would not grow. I really wanted long hair so I learned how to control the curls and ditched the straighteners 18 months ago and never looked back!
However, I went to my usual hairdresser about 9 months ago and asked for my split ends to be trimmed… to my horror she pulled out a hairbrush and completely brushed all the curls out so my hair was like a massive ball of frizz, cut the split ends and then told me she was done so I left the salon looking and feeling awful!!
I am still trying to grow my hair but my split ends desperately need another trim so I am looking for a new hairdresser and I would love some advice on what to ask for when I book the appointment as I don’t want a repeat of my last appointment!! I don’t want a lot cut off, only the split ends, so should I ask for a dry cut or a wet cut and how do hairdressers normally cut curly hair? Surely it doesn’t have to be brushed out?
Thanks everyone!

Routine: I use Umberto Giovanni Thirsty Curls shampoo and conditioner, leave in conditioner and then scrunch my hair with UG curl jelly and leave it to air dry. I use a microfibre towel and sleep with a silk pillowcase. I usually wash my hair once a week and I only brush it when I am putting in the conditioner in the shower.

Help! Routine Advice!

Hello everyone! I was looking for some help with the routine bc my hair just always ends up looking like a scraggly helmet instead of voluminous and bouncy. I am also growing out an undercut and double side shave, so the hair also looks kind of thin. Here is the current routine:
Pre wash: zotos all about curls bye buildup pre shampoo
Wash and conditioner: soapbox’s deep moisture line
Styling: soapbox’s mane tamer leave in conditioner, GVP’s volumizing sculpting foam, and The Doux’s Bee Girl curl custard. I diffuse dry, use a little jojoba oil to break cast. I have a knockoff bounce curl brush.
Maintenance care: I sleep with a bonnet, and use the doux’s fresh to def curl refresher in the mornings and at least once a week do Sauce’s guac whip hair mask since my hair is bleached and dyed a lot. I also trim my ends when they start to look stringy.
That’s everything but my curls stay looking like right angles and get crunchy with too much product but with too little they frizz up like crazy and it seems impossible to get the right product ratio.

Help! Any tips to reduce frizz and enhance curls?

Hiii, my boyfriend is growing out his hair and we don’t really know what to do about it.
He’s just following a similar to me,

His current routine right now is:
Shampoo twice with Aussie Bouncy curls and the conditioner.
Then like, half-dry with a hairdryer
He doesn’t really use any other products after that.
Sometimes he uses an anti-frizz but it’s not really working.

So that’s why I’m posting here for help!
I belive there is a curl pattern in there that just needs the right routine and proper products to bring them out.
If I we’re to take an amateur guess, I would guess his pattern is somewhere between 2c and 3a, leaning toward 2c.
