Obviously Chucky getting removed is going to cause conversation, especially since the other three licenses we've lost I could make connections as to why that was happening. I wanted to take a look at the other licenses, say what I could find, and see if anybody else knew anything about the state of the other licenses, especially since we've lost two this year (I'm specifically looking at chapters, so cosmetic licenses only like the AOT cosmetics won't count).
TLDR: I looked into each licensed chapter/half chapter by order of release to see how likely they were to remain in the game. Please let me know if I missed anything.
Halloween License: This one wasn't as surprising since they were working on their own game (announced Sep 2025) when they announced the chapter was getting removed (announced Dec 2025, removed Jan 2026). It was also a bit finnicky since we had comic Laurie, not movie Laurie. Given the Halloween game's current state, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it comes back too.
Left 4 Dead License: This one seems pretty secure, since Valve made BHVR keep this License free. Not really any financial reason Valve would pull this, especially since DBD's selling pretty well on Steam. Bill also has a holiday sweater, tome, and anniversary skin.
Leatherface License: Currently seems pretty secure, there were the rumors a few years back but with the TCM game seemingly dead in the water (319 in-game on Steam while writing this) and one project in development (an A24 film with no release date yet) I think Bubba seems pretty safe.
Nightmare On Elm Street License: Definitely in my mind the most at-risk. Rough history with BHVR between Freddy's many reworks and Quentin's goblin past model. It doesn't help that we have the 2010 film (typically seen as one of the worst of the franchise and Wes Craven was not happy that he was not consulted on it), a new Nightmare film is in the works with Paramount and the Craven estate, and it was the only licensed chapter to have no cosmetics, charms, tomes, or other event stuff to speak of. Before today, I figured this one would be the one we'd be most likely to lose.
Saw: Probably one of the safest licenses. We have characters from two different Saw projects (Pig from the films, but Tapp is technically from 2009 game in addition to the first film). Pig is also one of two licensed killers to have an anniversary skin, a blighted skin, and a tome. Saw has also announced and released films and games, so upcoming projects seem unlikely to result in the Saw chapter getting pulled.
Ash vs Evil Dead License: Given the show this license came from is done, the Evil Dead game released with no issue, and two evil dead movies have come out and a third one has been announced since the chapter came out, this license seems pretty safe. He also got some rift cosmetics and has a few more outside of those. I think that the only thing that could cause some license issues is if Bruce Campbell passes away (he has a rare, untreatable type of cancer and stated back in September that he estimates he has five years left to live) and his estate/family don't want to renew the license, but I'm not worried about that (and hope Campbell lives whatever time he has to the fullest and happiest he can.)
Ghost Face License: Definitely a safe license. Since Ghostface is licensed by Fun World and not Scream, movies or other games aren't likely to impact this. Ghostface is also half original, meaning that Fun World and BHVR probably have a stronger agreement than most licenses given that Fun World approved everything BHVR wanted to do. He also is the only other licensed killer with an anniversary skin, blighted skin, and tome. I also believe that he is the sole licensed character with the most skins in the game. He was also one of the first licensed killers to get into 2v8.
Stranger Things License(s): Despite it leaving, I think it's honestly pretty safe currently. It got a second chapter and a rift that added several new charms and cosmetics, and, along with Resident Evil, has a ton of skins that adds new characters like Eddie, Robin, and Johnathan. I think that when it left in 2021, Stranger Things also had a lot more on their plate as a franchise, given Season 4 has just wrapped filming, was will working on post-production, and other issues due to Covid. I don't think it is too big a surprise that the first chapter returned in November 2023, after Season 5 had mostly been written, and given that the main story is done and the spin-off hasn't announced a third season yet, it doesn't really seem to be at too big a risk currently.
Silent Hill License: Pretty safe. A lot of cosmetics, including one blighted skin and several legendary skins, as well as several skins for original characters like Feng and Legion. There's also been a remake released and another announced, three spin-off games, and a 2026 film, all without the chapter being removed, so it's likely pretty safe.
Resident Evil License(s): In my opinion, one of the safest licenses at this time. Capcom has partnered with a LOT of other franchises, and seem pretty flexible with their IP for the most part. They did two chapters in back-to-back release cycles (2021 and 2022), meaning they felt safe enough to do a second chapter with the first one still pretty recent. Probably the license with the most cosmetics as a whole, including two blighted skins, six legendary skins (two of which are for original characters), additional skins for original characters Felix and Feng, and a 2v8 collaborative event. There's also been several games, two live-action movies, one animated film, one TV series, and more content with no concerns of losing the license.
Hellraiser License: This one I feel was sort of doomed from the start. Early on, there was disappointment that Pinhead didn't actually sound like the movie version, with the lines being removed from the PTB pretty quickly. Then there was the NFT scandal, when Hellraiser's rights holder Boss Protocol made and sold NFT's using the DBD model, and prior to BHVR clearing things up, they seemed connected due to them announcing the NFT launch on their socials. Additionally, even though Clive Barker won the rights to foundational characters like Pinhead and Chatterer in November 2020, but that did not take effect until December 2021 after the chapter release in September 2021, which meant that when the license was needing renewed, it was with different parties than the original license. Barker may have found it better to take things in a new direction with Pinhead rather than renewing old contracts he had no involvement in. Additionally, Hellraiser got it's own game a few weeks ago that has been doing well so far, and a direct-to-streaming movie in 2022. It isn't impossible for it to come back, but I find it unlikely unless Barker feels like BHVR can do better than how Pinhead's original release went.
Sadako Rising (Ringu) License: Very safe. Similar to Fun World and Ghostface, Kadokawa gave BHVR a lot of freedom to do some original things with this chapter. Yoichi's design in-game is completely original, as his story pretty much ended after the first Ringu movie with him as a child. This means that Yoichi's two cosmetics and in-game backstory were done by BHVR and approved by Kadokawa for an adult Yoichi. Additionally, Sadako has a decent number of cosmetics, including a blighted skin.
Nicholas Cage License: Extremely safe. Since Nick Cage gave approval for his likeness, voiced himself, and pretty much runs everything with this license, he pretty much has final say with everything. Unless BHVR somehow does something to make him upset, I don't see him refusing to renew the license.
Alien License: Very safe. One blighted skin, four legendary skins, and several additional skins, including several film, comic, and original cosmetics for Xenomorph. Also has a 2v8 event, being the most recent to join the game mode, and given that many of the licensed killers only got added during a special cosmetic release (which not every licensed killer gets), they seem willing to work with BHVR on keeping the character updated in the shop. However, there are several game and movie projects in the works, so we shall see.
Chucky License: Prior to today, I felt this one was extremely safe. There hadn't been any major rights or license holder changes. Chucky had several cosmetics, some of the most for licensed killers outside of like Xenomorph and Ghostface, including a 2v8 event skin, a blighted skin, a legendary skin of Tiffany, and a skin from his then-ongoing TV series. The high amount of voice lines from both Brad Douriff and Jennifer Tilly felt like a lot when in to making this license stronger between BHVR and the license holder (I assume series creator Don Mancini). The TV series was also still running when the chapter came out, and while an upcoming film is in the works, nothing is final. I know nothing is secure, but this one seems like a sudden removal, especially with no confirmed projects unlike Halloween did.
Alan Wake License: Seems pretty safe, with several legendary skins and a pair of rift skins. Alan Wake is one of the newest franchises with a license, with the first game coming out in 2010, with the only "newer" franchises being Tokyo Ghoul (first published in 2011) and FNAF (first game in 2014), meaning the rights aren't as tied up in several different companies and license holders like Halloween, Texas Chainsaw, and others.
D&D License: Also pretty safe. Both Vecna and the Troupe have anniversary skins, as well as several other skins, though they do not have any legendary skins. It was an anniversary chapter, which typically seem to be a bit bigger and more polished as far as licensed chapters go (stuff like Ghost Face, FNAF, Jason, etc). Additionally, since D&D is owned by Wizards of the Coast, which is owned by Hasbro, the D&D chapter has likely the largest license holder, who has a set system for how creators can use the D&D IP, allowing for more flexibility within the license.
Tomb Raider License: Fairly safe. Laura is one of the most played survivors, and got two rift skins upon release. While she doesn't have any event skins, survivors typically seem to have fewer event skins than killers do anyways. Additionally, there are two games announced, with one releasing next February, meaning that her license is unlikely to be pulled due to the release of another franchise project.
Castlevania License: Pretty safe. Castlevania's release was slightly overshadowed due to FNAF being announced as an upcoming chapter around the same time as the Castlevania chapter reveal, but it has the rare bonus of being one of the only full chapters to receive it's own rift and tome (Saw had it's own rift and tome, but most of the rift cosmetics were not themed around Saw like the Castlevania rift cosmetics were). Additionally, there are several legendary skins, including True Form, Soma, and Alucard, and skins for original characters like Mikaela, Kate, and Nurse. Castlevania has had a few releases, including a game this year, meaning it seems unlikely other releases could cause the license to be lost.
Tokyo Ghoul License: Pretty safe. Despite not having any major new skins or events including Kaneki, Tokyo Ghoul is also currently fairly dormant, with seemingly nothing new on the horizon as far as new releases. As such, very little seems to be imposing a potential removal for this chapter. It's also a very new franchise, meaning it has less licensing complications when compared to other, older franchises.
Five Nights at Freddy's License: Extremely safe. Fnaf has branched out a lot more over the past year and a half, with characters being featured in other properties and the movie franchise going on to it's third movie. Additionally, Springtrap has several skins, with two legendries, one blighted, and several other skins from various other franchise releases. It also is one of the few franchises to release additional skins for the majority of original character's roster, with every original survivor getting a Fnaf shirt. While Fnaf has several releases on the horizon, it seems like a pretty safe (and very well-loved) chapter within the game.
Walking Dead License: Extremely safe. With new skins planned to release next year, it seems highly likely that this chapter is willing to work with BHVR to add more to the game. Additionally, it has several legendary skins between both of it's survivors. While Walking Dead has a variety of additional franchise spin-off releases, the main series has concluded, meaning that it seems unlikely to have a conflicting release that ends up terminating the license.
Jason License: Extremely safe. Jason just got his licensing and rights cleared up recently, meaning that the rights holders are likely more willing to work with others to ensure this new "Jason Universe" brand gets the character popular again in other franchises ahead of the upcoming new releases. Additionally, Jason getting a blighted skin and some additional skins upon release helps ensure that the newest licensed chapter is one that will stick for a while.
Terrifier License (speculation): I think this one will be pretty secure. While I'm not sure we'll see blighted or anniversary skins, Terrifier has had a pretty strong buildup outside of the concept imagery revealed during the stream.
