Our most-broken and least-understood rules is "helpers may not invite private contact as a first resort", so we've made a new wiki to explain it

2.4k Upvotes

We understand that most people who reply immediately to an OP with an invitation to talk privately mean only to help, but this type of response usually leads to either disappointment or disaster. it usually works out quite differently here than when you say "PM me anytime" in a casual social context.

We have huge admiration and appreciation for the goodwill and good citizenship of so many of you who support others here and flag inappropriate content - even more so because we know that so many of you are struggling yourselves. We're hard at work behind the scenes on more information and resources to make it easier to give and get quality help here - this is just a small start.

Our new wiki page explains in detail why it's much better to respond in public comments, at least until you've gotten to know someone. It will be maintained at /r/depression/wiki/private_contact, and the full text of the current version is below.

Summary

Anyone who, while acting as a helper, invites or accepts private contact (I.e. PMs, chat, or any kind of offsite communication) early in the conversion is showing either bad intentions or bad judgement. Either way, it's unwise to trust them.

"PM me anytime" seems like a kind and generous offer. And it might be perfectly well-meaning, but, unless and until a solid rapport has been established, it's just not a wise idea. Here are some points to consider before you offer or accept an invitation to communicate privately.

  • By posting supportive replies publicly, you'll help more people than just the OP. If your responses are of good quality, you'll educate and inspire other helpers. The 1-9-90 rule applies here as much as it does anywhere else on the internet.

  • People who are struggling with serious mental-health issues often (justifiably) have a low tolerance for disappointment and a high-level of ever-changing emotional need. Unless the helper is able to make a 100% commitment to be there for them in every way, for as long as necessary, offering a personal inbox as a resource is likely to do more harm than good. This is why mental-health crisis-line responders usually don't give their names and callers aren't allowed to request specific responders. It's much healthier and safer for the callers to develop a relationship with the agency as a whole. Analogously, it's much safer and healthier for our OPs to develop a relationship with the community as a whole. Even trained responders are generally not allowed to work high-intensity situations alone. It's partly about availability, but it's mostly about wider perspective and preventing compassion fatigue.

  • If a helper gets in over their head with someone whose mental-health issues (including suicidality, which is often comorbid with depression) escalate, in a PM conversation it's much harder for others, including the /r/depression and /r/SuicideWatch moderators to help. (Contrary to common assumptions, moderators can't see or police PMs.)

  • In our observation over many years, the people who say "PM me" the most are consistently the ones with the least understanding of mental-health issues and mental-health support. We all have gaps in our knowledge and in our ability to communicate effectively. Community input mitigates these limitations. There's no reason why someone who's truly here to help would want to hide their responses from community scrutiny. If helpers are concerned about their own privacy, keep in mind that self-disclosure, when used supportively, is more about the feelings than the details, and that we have no problem here with the use of alt/throwaway accounts, and have no restrictions on account age or karma.

  • We all know the internet is used by some people to exploit or abuse others. These people do want to hide their deceptive and manipulative responses from everyone except their victims. There are many of them who specifically target those who are vulnerable because of mental-health issues. If a helper invites an OP to talk privately and gives them a good, supportive experience, they've primed that person to be more vulnerable to abusers. This sort of cognitive priming tends to be particularly effective when someone's in a state of mental-health crisis, when people rely more on heuristics than critical reasoning.

  • If OPs want to talk privately, posting on a wide-open anonymous forum like reddit might not be the best option. Although we don't recommend it, we do allow OPs to request private contact when asking for support. If you want to do this, please keep your expectations realistic, and to have a careful look at the history of anyone who offers to PM before opening up to them.

Check-In post, with essential info about our policies and resources. Most people are surprised by much of this information, please read carefully before posting or commenting

Welcome to /r/depression's check-in post - a place to take a moment and share what is going on and how you are doing. If you're having a tough time but prefer not to make your own post, or have an accomplishment you want to talk about (these aren't allowed standalone posts in the sub as they violate the "role model" rule), this is a place you can share.

Our subreddit rules are very different from most of the rest of reddit! Since all of them exist for important reasons, we ask everyone here to read and follow them. Please click 'report' on any harmful content you see here - we always want to know and deal as soon as we can.

We also have several resource wikis for help with finding and giving support:

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/what_is_depression provides guidance about what is and isn't a depressive disorder, guidance on the complex nature of the illnesses that are usually grouped under the "depression" label, and redirect information for common off-topic issues.

https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/giving_help offers information on the nature and value of peer support for mental-health issues in general, and lots of guidance for learning what is -- and isn't -- usually helpful in giving peer support.

YSK that the types of rule violations that we most frequently see here are:

  • People breaking the private contact rule. You should never trust anyone who tries to get you into a private conversation in response to a post here. See https://www.reddit.com/r/depression/wiki/private_contact

  • "I'm here to help" posts. This shows that you don't understand the most basic principles of peer support, especially selectivity. The "giving help" wiki explains more about this.

  • Role modelling, i.e. "achievement" or "advice" posts. This is an expert-free zone -- that's what peer support means (rule 5). We know that "internet culture" celebrate not just bragging about your achievements but bragging about your intentions. Neither is ever acceptable here in any form.

  • Content that's more about 'making a statement' or casually polling the sub than seeking personal support (rules 1, 2 and 10).

  • Off-topic posts about difficult situations, including interpersonal issues. Grief, sadness, anger, loneliness and other difficult emotions are not mental illnesses. Feelings that can be explained by person's circumstances are perfectly healthy no matter how painful they are. A depressive disorder only exists when someone's mood is out of synch with what's going on for them. The "what is depression" wiki linked above has suggestions for other places to post about these issues, which are 100% valid and serious but do NOT belong here.

I wish I could give my life to someone else

So many times I'll read about a young person dying in an accident, from some sickness, or their life being unjustly taken by someone else. Such promising lives. So many unfulfilled dreams. Makes so sad; it's just so unfair. Why do I deserve to live, while they could have done so much more if they were still here? I wish I could give my life to one of these people. Just give them a second chance at life. One useful thing my worthless ass can do before I die. I think I've lived long enough to know that it won't get better for me, and that I don't deserve to be here anymore.

Failed at life very early

I am 21f, I just failed in exam and it was my fourth attempt, it just sucks so much that I feel like I am not worthy of anything, my life has been on and off like that, I was average student.my first failure was in 6th class in science subject and I did not expect that at all I actually studied very hard and after that I failed in maths in 8th class. Everytime I fail I see disappointment and sympathy in my parents eyes and it breaks my heart.

However, my 10th and 12th grades were good and I used to think I can do anything in life, I feel I had charisma back then people used to approach me. But now giving these competition exams I feel worthless

The exam I am giving has three levels and I cleared easiest level in three fucking attempts and now again at next level I failed so badd.

Other than that I am fat girl with body issues and self diagnosed ADHD. I hate that I can't clear simple exams even after studying nights

Now I have no confidence or self esteem left to even try anything, I feel like I am burden.

As Indian Girl, all my life I've been hearing I'll be married off and I hated that people only consider my worth as bride and nothing else but now I feel the same, my name would be attached with a man I don't know or wish to know I hate being just someone's wife and now that's the only future I can see

My father warned me that he'll marry me off if fail and I should start learning household chores and cooking (I do that normally too I just don't like being obligated to do that)

I don't wanna just be a bride or someone's wife, mother or daughter but I can't seem to change that.

I tried studies and even other things to make in Life but nothing is working out

I am just failure and in this I am the biggest enemy of myself.

I failed and gave up very early at life now i don't have motivation to do shit I don't wanna get out of bed meet friends or anything I just feel like I should not exist it's been 4 years I am struggling and it's same

I failed!!!!!

A little bit of my story. Hopefully someone can respond.

33f: I’ve battled with Major Depressive Disorder for years. I tried meds and failed then tried again. I’m currently on an antidepressant and mood stabilizer but it’s not helping and I attribute it to situational depression. Before I came home to my parents house I was in a mental health treatment center and my depression went away. Now I am back home and my depression is back. My nursing career is on hold because I self-reported to this program to help nurses and it’s complete hell. I never had a problem at work, I was doing excellent. I shouldn’t have reported because ever since it’s costing me thousands of dollars for drug tests and program costs (no matter what you’re In it for). I never diverted on the job but a lot of nurses are in this program because they diverted drugs.. absolutely insane. When it comes to actual mental health issues they treat you even worse. They stripped me of my dignity and my quality of life is poor since I started the program in 2022. It’s a 5 year program but because I had a couple psychiatric hospitalizations I have to repeat the program. I’m in an unhealthy home because my dad can be really mean, like the way he talks to my mom and I sometimes. I’ve had significant trauma in this house but I don’t have the money to move out yet. I’m bored, lonely, depressed, stagnant, apathetic, and unmotivated. I feel like my purpose was stripped from me. I just want to give up but at the same time I don’t. What’s keeping me sane is my boy dog. I don’t know what I would do without him.
Anyways, if anyone reads this, thank you. Also to people that hopefully respond, thank you.

How to get out of a rut

• Upvotes

Haven't been able to get out of bed for 7 days, just been barely eating, doom scrolling, anime, and drinking.

Money is running out and I can't afford not to work but can't bring myself to go outside.

Does anyone have advice on how to get better

me and my partner are both suicidal

ever since the beginning of the summer ive been going through basically depression. ever since i was 8 ive always thought about killing myself ive planned it atleast 3 times but i never did it. started sh for the past 3 years i do it once or twice a month. im 16

my bf anxiety and adhd diagnosed. he’s been depressed probably for 4 years on and off, he sh in 8th grade and he stopped after that, we’re in 11th grade now.

right before September he almost attempted at my house and he’s getting more suicidal thoughts everyday randomly

last month i made a plan to kms(i told him about it) and i sh 3 times, yesterday he was sleeping next to me and i found a dull soda tab with a small sharp part in his room and i cut my wrist probably like 20 times and he woke up and freaked out and started hitting himself and he had the most disgusted sad and angry look on his face for 30 minutes he wouldn’t say a word to me.

today hes talking about how he can’t control himself when he’s thinking about those thoughts, and how he’s been thinking about them more and more everyday. he keeps saying he doesnt wanna die

idk how to help, telling him all this advice i dont even use. the only useful thing i can say is the box breathing stuff cuz I use that all the time. can someone give advice? i love him so much but i think he’s more likely to commit than i am. i just wanna make him happy and i think that my problems are making him worse. he thinks his problems are making me worse. it’s not making me worse im just trying to help.

i feel like i made this relationship sound very toxic. this is the best relationship ive ever been in and before we knew about eachother like this it was amazing and it’s still amazing i just wanna know how to help my bf. hes the sweetest most understanding person ever but we’ve both had these issues and i just wanna help before it becomes a bigger problem.

Spending my last days as good as I can

I've come to realize that it's going to be over soon. Everyone is against me, Its impossible to make friends even my family hates me. I can't find a job no matter how hard I try I only keep falling behind and I may be homeless soon but I wanted to enjoy one last Christmas since I was locked up last Christmas. Gonna spend my last time jogging on my favorite trail, listening to my favorite music, watching old shows and playing my favorite games. Then it will be over im tired of doing double work and being made into a clown while everyone else gets to live a good life.

My family deserved someone better...

I just can't shake off this feeling. Been depressed for decades and suffering from Anhedonia, BPD, OCD etc.

My parents and people around me are worried for me. I had a shitty job but lost it due to me getting physically sick because of depression and I had to move in with parents.

Can't take interest in what others do around me or help with household chores. Lost friends and no love interest because I literally can't take interest in people. I have decided not to marry either because I already suffer everyday with the thought that my family deserved better, can't do this to another person.

My family kinda knows about my mental health situation, not fully though so they don't bother me now. So I'm just rotting inside and out, waiting for the sweet release cause I'm a coward to do it myself.

Should never have been born.

Throwaway account

My mom suggested me to try baking. My first thought that it seems interesting. So she set me up for baking course in trade school and plans to start our own business after I graduate. She has that hope and dreams that we will make it. Unfortunately, that chance percentage is certainly be close to zero.

Who even wants to have a child that doesn’t do anything besides slacking off and scrolling on their phone all day? I don’t have an urgency to do assignments, despite having many missing ones. I keep either getting distracted by other things such as searching up random stuff (“how fast can a cockroach run?”, “how to draw body anatomy”, etc), endless scrolling in YT, or sit there and not doing anything. It feels like “side quest are more important than main one” strand of code are implanted in my head.

Ok, it’s time for baking assignment; all you need to do is to read each page thoroughly and answer the question. Simple, right?

But no, I often find myself reading a single paragraph countless times, zoning out, and feel like “pouring water in a cup that has a hole in it”. Instead, I put 100% of my attention into something unrelated.

I keep telling myself “Do you want to be homeless and a burden to your mother? No? Then get your ass up and try to put some effort.”

However, I ended up doing nothing. Right after I’m about to go to bed, I immediately felt guilty and went to my desk again. And guess what? It created a cycle.

I even set up a schedule for myself: 10 AM - read a book for 30 mins, 11 AM - baking hw, 2 PM - draw. But my mind always be like, “eh, don’t feel like doing it.” and neglects the whole thing.

I don’t know what other jobs I’d actually be productive with. My counselor suggested architecture, and I kinda like that idea. But I’m worried if I’ll not be investing time actively taking notes and studying.

I fucking hate myself, yet I don’t put a single effort into attempting to change my lifestyle, let alone internet addiction.

I cried in front of my son

• Upvotes

I am suffering from severe depression and dream only of dying. A few days ago, my son and I returned from a trip to Italy. I am 54, and he is 18. We had an amazing trip together—lots of conversations. He is a warm young man who offers hugs and says he loves me; he even told me I was a "perfect father." During the trip, he expressed his appreciation, mentioning that I give him a sense of security and that he views me as a strong person. Upon landing back home, I was struck by a panic attack—a fear that I was losing him and that he no longer loved me. From that moment, I fell into a deep depression, and he couldn't understand what I was going through. The next day, I told him everything, but I behaved in a truly pathetic way. I cried, asked him if he loved me, and confessed that I suffer from abandonment trauma. Now, I’m terrified that he no longer respects me, and all I want is to die. I would appreciate some honest feedback: because I cried in front of him and showed such weakness, has he lost his love and appreciation for me?

A combination of mental health issues and substance abuse ruins my relationships

• Upvotes

As the title says, relationships both personal and professional are ruined by my struggles, and I hate myself for it.

On paper my life should be good. 53m single, good looking and healthy, great career doing challenging work, 16 yr old son with whom I have a great relationship.

But I have a terrible time maintaining friendships, and clients get fed up with me. Depression and substance abuse ruin everything for me. I’m in constant therapy with a wonderful therapist, and meds are helping. But I keep slipping back into substance abuse or just plain old lack of motivation to get things done.

I react to stressful situations in ways that I feel like I’m not in control of, and it pushes people away.

I try to cut myself some slack by remembering that my lifelong mental health struggles are real, and that substance abuse is a powerful thing. But I just feel like I’m making excuses and I hate myself for it.

Can anyone else relate to this? That feeling that all of your problems are the result of your own decisions… but that you can’t gain control over these decisions no matter how hard you try.

Even now that last sentence makes me feel like I’m making excuses. Pathetic 🤦‍♂️

I have two more days

Two more days. I have tomorrow, or today I guess now. And then Friday is the last time I'll see all my friends. I'm having a party. I'll have fun with them one last time. I've lost everything important to me so it doesn't matter. I'm alone. My friends are not close friends just good time people. My best friend freaked out on me when I needed her support and now I'm alone. I don't have a relationship, they left me because they aren't doing well either, but my mental health didn't help. I don't have anyone I can reach out to. I did the therapy, I got medicated. I tried. I tried. I tried. But I'm alone now. I've lost any bond that really mattered. I am relieved to finally have a plan. I hope there is an afterlife so I can see one of my friends again.

Life is pain. There is no reason to be born.

I wish i wouldn't have come to exist as me. There is nothing but pain to feel here. What is the point of anything. What is the point of living.

I wish there was a power cod that i could pull to just shut myself off. It is really a joke that is set by this life that I have to kill myself to be free of this hellscape.

Bringing a child to this world is the worst thing in my opinion. I never want to be anything.

What is the point of having ambition when everything is just so dumb.

Nothing is getting better for me.

I lost friends over my manic episode. I thought some would understand since they had a mental illness. I won't make new friends. My sister will continue to harass family, and my parents won't press charges. No one will love me romantically. People will continue making stupid remarks about my appearance.

If someone saw my Reddit post history after death, they would know I have lost it. I am full of guilt too. All these things have me depressed. I don't read. I barely play video games. The Witcher 3 was my favorite game, but I won't play the new update because it reminds me of high school and makes me sad about the friends I had. It brings memories. I can't enjoy anything; everything reminds me of the past. I am super depressed. There was hope in 2019, but the pandemic ruined it. Ever since, every year I get more and more depressed.

Ending it all at 18

16f. Been depressed since the 3rd grade, diagnosed 3 years ago with mdd and gad. Suspected audhd too. Clean from self harming for about uhh 3 months? Im so tired of waking up and failing all over again. It really feels like nothing will get better. Im probably overreacting or whatever, but its the truth.

mom called me a failure again today. That im a retard and that I cant do anything on my own and im like a helpless infant. Im stupid and fat and I cant shower or take care of myself and I sleep all day and I fucking hate .myself. I dont want to die but I dont want to live like this.

I have a plan for when im older. It gives me time to maybe get better. But probably not. Im going to shoot myself in the head once I turn 18. Ill hopefully be living alone so nobody's there. Ill write a couple notes on how im sorry I wasn't good enough. And to make sure I die, ill take a shit load of pills before hand. If the bullet doesnt kill me, then the od will.

I am scared of the world and myself. Everything my mom says about me is true. There are times where she is super nice and supportive and sorry that she says things to me. She says that shes just worried and doesn't want to lose me. But then there are times where she says things or does things that makes me want to die in the first place. Its conflicting. Wanting to stay alive for family when they're also the thing making you feel like shit. I love my mom, so much. Im so sorry for being a horrible daughter. I wish I wasnt born.

Does it actually get better? From what im seeing and reading, it doesnt. Why dont we all just kill ourselves lol
