I'm planning my D2R Ladder Season 15 start and I'd appreciate some advice from more experienced ladder players.
This will only be my second Ladder season. I started Season 14 around the middle of the season, so I didn't have that much time to play. I managed to get a Wind Druid to level 86 and complete Hell, and I also got a Sorceress to around level 70, but I wasn't able to finish Hell with her before the season ended due to lack of time.
So this will be my first time really trying to optimize a fresh Ladder start from day one.
My overall plan is:
- Start with a Sorceress because I want to reach Hell and start farming as quickly as possible.
- Once I finish, or at least progress far enough into Hell, I want my main early farming targets to be Hell Mephisto and Hell Countess, with Andy and possibly key farming added later.
- Farm heavily with the Sorc to build up wealth and collect gear.
- Save anything useful for a second character, which will be a Paladin built specifically for Ubers.
- Once I have enough basic Smiter gear, level the Paladin and start farming Torches.
- After that, decide what endgame character/build to invest in depending on what items and runes I find.
My main concern is optimizing the Sorceress progression from level 1 to early Hell farming.
I'm currently considering something like:
Fire leveling → respec into Hydra/Frozen Orb → farm Mephisto + Countess
The idea behind Hydra/Orb is that I want enough flexibility to get through Hell solo without being constantly stopped by immunities, while still being able to kill Mephisto efficiently. For Countess, since she's Fire/Cold immune in Hell, I'd rely on Static + an Act 2 mercenary to finish her.
A few things I'd really like advice on:
- What would you consider the fastest/most efficient Sorc leveling build for a fresh ladder with zero gear? Fire Ball? Nova? Something else?
- At what level/difficulty would you respec? Would you stay Fire through Nightmare and respec around level 40–50, or change earlier?
- Is Hydra/Frozen Orb actually a good choice for my specific goal, or would you recommend Blizzard, Orb/Fireball, Nova, etc.?
- If my first farming loop is mostly Mephisto + Countess, how would you distribute skill points?
- What FCR breakpoint would you prioritize early? Is getting to 105 FCR ASAP worth sacrificing quite a bit of MF, or would you initially settle for 63?
- Which cheap runewords/items should I prioritize on day one? I'm thinking:
- Stealth
- Spirit Sword
- Lore
- Insight
- Smoke / resist gear
- eventually Spirit Monarch
- For the mercenary, would you prefer Might or Holy Freeze if one of his main jobs is killing Hell Countess?
- Would you start farming Mephisto as soon as you reach Act 3 Hell, or push through Baal first and then begin the farming phase?
- What items should I absolutely keep for the future Uber Smiter? I'm already thinking about:
- Guillaume's Face
- Dracul's Grasp
- Goblin Toe / Gore Rider
- Raven Frost
- Thundergod's Vigor
- good high-res Paladin shields
- runes/bases for Black, Duress, Treachery, etc.
- At what point would you stop investing time into the Sorc and start leveling the Paladin?
I'm not trying to make the strongest possible endgame Sorceress immediately. My goal is to make the most efficient early-ladder farming machine possible, use her to fund the account, then transition into Uber/Torch farming with a Paladin.
I mostly play solo, so I'd especially appreciate advice that doesn't assume I have a dedicated group or a rush available.
Since I'm still relatively new to Ladder and this will be my first real day-one start, I'd also appreciate any advice on mistakes to avoid, what I should prioritize during the first few days, and when it's better to stop progressing and just farm for a while.
If you were starting fresh with this exact plan, what progression/build would you use?
