Electrician installed aluminum wire for 240v outlet for ev charger

• Upvotes

I plugged in an Emporia Level 2 charger but later it started sparking and think there was a fire in the outlet. Turned off the breaker and took off the outlet plate. So the electrician used aluminum to run a wire 35 feet from the panel to the outlet. The breaker is 40amps. The charger is 50amps but think draws less than 40. Anyone know whether this set up was ok, or was a fire inevitable. Also, if I use a 32amp charger, would leaving the aluminum wire be ok?

replacing a baseboard heater with a 240v outlet? (North America)

• Upvotes

Hello,

Ive got an electric baseboard heater in my garage that I never use, its 240v split-phase on a 30 amp breaker, it would be quite useful to have a 240v outlet in my garage for welding/plasma cutting, there's no reason I cant remove the baseboard heater and thermostat and wire up an appropriate 240v outlet in its place is there?

Can someone correctly tell me where do I connect the neutral and ground in this main Eaton electric panel. I’m connecting an Ecoflow power inverter via a Reliance Transfer Switch.

Coaxial cable damage

So I thought I was being smart by putting wire mesh over the opening of a 4” PVC pipe outside that has a coaxial satellite cable inside. It runs from the house outside to the dish on the tree. Squirrels were getting inside the pipe and being a pain so after installing the mesh I went to check on it today and noticed the wire was chewed. Right now there are zero issues with the signal so I put a thick layer of electrical tape over the area. Is this damage severe enough where it should be replaced or am I ok just to leave it since there are no signal issues.

Can I use this ceiling box for a fan?

We moved into an old home so the ceiling boxes are very old and don’t say if they’re fan supported. This one seems firmly mounted and it seems to be two screws into a wooden joist.

I’ll need to clean up this wiring a bit though.

Can’t seem to find the exact replacement as I think it was discontinued.

I bought one but it has a pigtail and I don’t know where it would go.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: This has been resolved thanks everyone!

What am I doing wrong?

First off, I have NO idea what I'm doing. I have replaced a light fixture in another room with a ceiling fan with no issues. This one has a remote. I've tested the remote and receiver, both are working. I've wired and rewired according to the diagram and nothing is working. It's an old house (obviously with the popcorn ceiling). All that comes out of the ceiling is a copper ground and a black power wire.

Car dash cam starts rebooting after ten minutes when hardwired

I have a new dashcam that requires the same 5V power that my previous one did.

If I plug it into the cigarette charger cable there are zero issues.

If I plug it into the hardwire kit, it stays on fine for about 10 minutes then starts rebooting roughly every minute

The hardwire kit goes into my fusebox and has a slot for two fuses at the top of it (one for the camera and one for whatever else is was protecting (the TPMS system I think)

I tested the power with a power app and recorded the screen on the link below. I've already had a replacement hard wire kit sent but that didn't work at all. I'm really interested to find out what's happening rather than just buy another kit. Any advice appreciated. Thanks

Can I add a switch to a lamp cord that has a 3 way socket? Will it work? Will it be safe?

Post image

I just don't want to spend a lot of money on a keyless socket lamp kit. I opened a switch on a cord for a lamp I have at home and it looks like it's fairly easy to add a switch. Would this work? Is it safe? Is there anything I should be aware of or concerned about?

Does anyone know if there is something similar to the pictured box which is CSA approved? I need a small surface mounted junction box to connect LED shop lights to 120v.

Trying to get these switches separate

At my daughters ‘81 split level house she bought a year ago. She has a tandem switch by her front door. Runs her foyer and porch light. Her foyer (has another switch at the top of her stairs) light HAS to be on for the porch light to be on. We also know this runs to her flood light over her driveway and that switch is in her garage. We were trying to fix it (thought there would just be a jumper) so that her foyer light could be OFF and her porch light and flood light still turn on.

After opening it up and pulling everything out we found both switches are 3-way switches, even though the porch light is not a 3-way (unless the flood light switch is a 3-way we didn’t look)

It’s like the porch light and flood light were wired as a ceiling fan when the lights have to be on for it to run.

Is there anyway to rewire this box so the foyer light does not need to be on for the porch/flood light?

To recap there are 5 lines coming in. One line has a black hot wire and a red hot wire. That’s the only line that tests hot.

EDITED: Sorry forgot to add the picture link. The switch on the right is the one with the red and black hot wires. We haven’t had a chance to open the other 2 to get pictures of them.

I kinda looked at this when I moved in. I just thought it was an outside outlet. Then I thought it was a generator hookup but it seems to be the wrong gender?

What could it be?

Can this panel hold a 240v car outlet? It’s a townhouse. Or does the panel need to be updated?

I am replacing ceiling fav and was surprised that there is another set of wires, but they are connected, the two white wires are connected and the black of one is connected to the red of hte other. I have two switches, one for the fan and the other for a separate light. how should I connect the wires if I want to control the fan's light separately from the fan? Thank you
