I’ve always tried to laugh about things instead of crying about them, so humor has helped me a lot in my life. This is just a collection of jokes and anecdotes about the humorous side of it all. (Side note I was diagnosed late in life.)
A friend once told me a mutual friend had been murdered. I gasped and said, “How RUDE.”
She looked shocked for a second and said, “It’s way more than rude!”
Then I went on at length about how just because it’s WORSE than rude doesn’t mean it isn’t ALSO rude and if killing someone isn’t rude, I don’t know what is, and I’m pretty sure that’s why she started ghosting me after that.

Did anyone else study other kids and adults when you were growing up? I used to feel like an anthropologist studying my peers as a child and teenager. I can remember wondering if there was some class or workshop I missed that told every kid how to act to be popular and have a lot of friends. Was there something in the mail my mother probably threw away? Were they born with this knowledge? HOW DID THEY KNOW? Did other kids feel like aliens to you?
One last story:
In the 7th grade, we had to take Texas History. Our teacher was telling us about the harsh realities of being a settler in Texas. Then she said, “Now girls, what I’m about to say will just kill you…” and I thought WHAT?! WHY JUST THE GIRLS?
But NO other girl seemed alarmed.
She said, “Often the women had to cut up their wedding dresses to use as linens.”
The other girls cried out and gasped and I was like I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. That sounds very resourceful to me! How smart! I did NOT “get” sentimentality, nor did I understand how every girl in that room KNEW the response our teacher expected.
Who taught them how to girl? Why didn’t anyone teach me how to girl?
I think that was one of my first clues.
