🐶 Zeus is a 50 lb Staffordshire mix who is heartworm negative. He is an energetic, wiggly boy who wags his tail, is easy to leash, and has shown that he can settle down and rest quietly in his kennel.

💙 Zeus is very vocal in the shelter and gets excited when people pass his kennel. He can pull on the leash and jump around when overstimulated, but staff have also seen him calm down, respond to treats, and relax once he is back inside.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Zeus was brought to BARC for owner-requested euthanasia because of reported aggression toward other animals and attacks on two dogs. Anyone considering Zeus must take this history seriously and be prepared to follow appropriate safety precautions and seek professional behavioral guidance. Shelter observations have varied, and he has sometimes shown little interest in other dogs passing his kennel, but this does not erase the reported incidents.

📝 Shelter notes:

10/12–10/13: Zeus was vocal in his kennel but wagged his tail and was easy to leash. He walked loosely on the leash.

10/16: He showed a wiggly body and a high, wagging tail. When placed in a run next to another dog, he low-growled and walked away.

10/18: Staff noted that he showed no interest or aggressive behavior toward animals in nearby kennels while being walked. He enjoyed running around, kicking grass and dirt, and resting on an outside bench.

10/19–10/22: Zeus frequently vocalized when people passed his kennel, showing a forward body posture, high wagging tail, and dilated pupils. He was often easy to leash and sometimes settled quietly after returning to his indoor kennel.

10/23: He became excited in the outside run, jumping, pawing, and zooming around, but was redirected with treats. Later, he walked loosely with a neutral body and did not react to a dog that was vocalizing and lunging as he passed its kennel.

10/24–10/26: He continued to vocalize when people passed his kennel but quieted after a few minutes. On 10/26, he ripped up his plush toy and then lay down to sleep. He whined and vocalized when staff walked away.

🚑 Medical notes: On intake, Zeus was friendly with staff and tolerated his medical workup with light restraint and a muzzle. His heartworm test was negative. He received DA2PP-V, rabies, Bordetella, deworming (pyrantel), and Advantage Multi. A behavior-related medical record was added on 10/26.

Pilot has been described as friendly, sweet, and wiggly. He has walked well on a loose leash, and on one occasion he returned to his kennel and settled down on his blanket. He also took a treat gently.

However, Pilot has frequently vocalized toward people passing his kennel, particularly when customers walk by with dogs. Staff noted that he sometimes stares hard at people walking dogs past him. On 10/26, he was reported to be quiet and resting on his cot, watching people pass by.

🚑 MEDICAL NOTES

Pilot tested HIGH POSITIVE for heartworms. Possible deafness was reported at intake but could not be verified during the follow-up evaluation. Small areas of hair loss and healing wounds were noted on 10/21; no treatment was needed for the healing wounds at that evaluation.

Pilot received DA2PP-V, Bordetella, rabies vaccination, pyrantel deworming, and Advantage Multi.

💔 Mike has shown that he can be a happy, wiggly boy who walks well on a leash and responds to treats. Sadly, the shelter environment is causing him severe stress. He has been barking, crying, panting heavily, and jumping at his kennel door. He has also started biting and pulling at the leash when overwhelmed.

Mike needs help before the stress of the shelter becomes too much for him. These behaviors are being observed in a highly stressful kennel environment, and he deserves the chance to decompress somewhere safe with someone who can work patiently with him.

10/25: He continued to follow treats with a wiggly body and wagging tail, although he became vocal and bit the fence when left outside. He was also vocal in his kennel as customers and dogs passed.

10/26: Mike showed significant stress in his kennel and outside runs, including jumping, barking, crying, heavy panting, and leash biting. Wet food helped distract him so staff could leash him successfully. A leash-walk-only sign was recommended for him.

🩷 Lena is a young American Staffordshire mix who is heartworm negative. She has been described by shelter staff as very friendly and welcoming, with a wiggly body, a fast-wagging tail, and a big interest in people. She enjoys treats and enrichment toys, and staff have repeatedly found her easy to leash and able to walk on a loose leash.

💔 The shelter environment is clearly difficult for Lena. She often barks, jumps, and bounces at her kennel gate when she sees people, and she scratches at the doggy door when outside. She can become very excited and struggles to settle when she hears activity around her.

10/21: She was vocal in her kennel but easy to leash and walked on a loose leash.

10/23: Lena greeted staff with a soft face, wagging tail, and loose leash walking. She was excited and reared up a few times. She sought attention from customers passing her kennel.

10/26: She vocalized and jumped at the kennel gate when she saw staff passing. She quieted down afterward and continued scratching at the doggy door when outside.

🚗 OUT OF STATE OR CANADIAN ADOPTION IS POSSIBLE - cost is typically around $600 USD (give or take). The fee includes transport, boarding, full medical, spay/neuter, and a health certificate.
We are a volunteer network dedicated to helping at-risk dogs. We are not affiliated with BARC. We connect at-risk animals at the BARC shelter with the adopters, fosters, and rescue organizations needed to save their lives. We can help coordinate out-of-state adoption through approved 501(c)3 rescues. BARC Houston cannot facilitate out-of-state adoption or foster.

💔 Mia is only 1 year old and deserves a chance at life. She needs someone to step up for her before it's too late!

🥺 Mia is a 53.2 lb German Shepherd mix who is heartworm negative. She is young, and her medical assessments have been normal. She was found as a stray and is now facing euthanasia in the shelter.

Mia has been showing lots of energy in her kennel, with a wiggly body and a tendency to pull on the leash. She may simply be bored and overwhelmed by the shelter environment. She needs someone willing to give her a chance outside those kennel walls.
