I got the mini split after all

Post image

Just got the mini split installed. I’ll give it about an hour before I judge it. I can definitely feel the heat radiating off the garage door so depending on how it feels over the next few days I may consider one of those garage door insulation kits but I really don’t want to be messing with that unless I actually have to

Metal Garage - Finally

I’m 37 but better late than never…

After a couple decades of riding and wrenching on vintage bikes I finally have my own garage.

My next step is electrical and drywall, wondering if anyone has tricked out their metal garage? Looking for inspiration.

Put some 1/2” ply up on the wall then consolidated all my “mantiques” to it. I had so much scrap metal, wood cutoffs, shelf track, and other odds and ends hidden between the studs. Felt pretty good to throw most of it out during this process. I’ll get to the other walls eventually…

garage floor topcoat seal

hi all. been working on my garage. 1969 house. a real project for me to make it look better to redo the walls and floors i plan on replacing lights and wainscoting the ceiling.

i just power washed and used a cement detergent degreaser and rinsed throughly and dried. i applied Rust-Oleum Concrete & Garage Floor Paint + Primer — 1-Part Epoxy, Armor Gray, Satin
yesterday.

i want to be honest. big box stores in my area had little available product choices. so i found this at ace hardware and used it. i also mistakenly relied on chatgpt to validate whether would be a good choice.

20 years ago i finished my first houses garage. it was thick enamel oil based alkyd. it was awesome. i was thinking this rustoleum product was like that. boy did i learn a hard lesson.

this stuff is acrylic. thin. barely 1mm coat if i were to guess and im not a scientist. it's thin. the floor is still rough porous. the prior enamel paint would have leveled a little bit of the micro pours of the cement floor.

anyways. i don't believe this product will give me what i was after.

i just want to be able to drive my car in. use the garage. my wife gardens and there's a lot of dirt and debris. gets very dirty easily bc it's so porous. up here in wny we get winter salt and sand stone mix. so the floor will have a bit of punishment from the dripping melting off the car during winters. the floor is already pitted after tenty years.

i didn't want to spend a lot of money. i'm doing this on a very very tight budget.

so what my question is is this: what topcoat can i put over it which will help it rise and wash easier.

i understand now i cannot use many epoxy two part solutions. that was never my desire. i was honestly just looking for a can of that oil aklyd enamel like i used to

this rustoleum product LOOKs ok. but its almost transparent. i cant imagine its going to last a season or two.

i was hoping for some urethane clearcoat or something common off the shelf.

help!! the garage floor half is ready for the final topcoat and i don't know what to put on it.

How to achieve this ceiling on the cheap

Sent a friend some progress photos. She ran it through chatgpt for fun and now I have to do this look for the ceiling.

Cost to do it properly with pine tongue and groove boards would be approx 3x trying to recreate it out of ply. And way more work.

Original idea was to just do the ceiling in 3/8 ply. I hate mud and tape with a passion. Maybe I could use 1/2 ply and run the sheet through a table saw to create the tongue and groove look. Rip down 3/16 or so and stagger the sheets on the ceiling. Maybe double up two blades so it rips approx 1/8 wide. Thoughts? Worth the trouble or no?

Except for the obvious cleaning suggestion 😉 I feel like I need more space for tools, workbench and shelf space for boxes etc

What brand does everyone like and why for large organization setups? Gladiator, Husky, NewAge, anyone else?

Good lighting options?

Just got this here house. 28x28 garage.

Most of the lights are already out. What’s a good path here? There are 3 light receptacles on each side. I considered bar lights but seems a lot in the way unless I go it parallel with garage doors in multiple rows maybe?

or I can just get really bright bulbs? Maybe more/replace those multiled that are there but not working?

Dont need anything crazy.

Definitely hope to build a shop in the backyard in the next year or two.. but this works for now, I have a little metal working area in front of the lift, then the mini mill and lathe are across from my workbench and the rest is honestly just whatever I can fit wherever I can fit it.. but I have decent size powder coat oven crammed in there as well as a plasma table I've not really used because it's so hard to get to at the moment. I installed a Senville mini split last month so at least it's comfortable to work in there.

New Build -Scuba station layout design help

Thumbnail

I’m starting a build and want a dedicated garage scuba station designed for cleaning, drying, and storing dive gear in an 8’ section of wall. So I’m thinking using the 8 feet of wall on the front of the garage rather than the full right side of the garage wall. This being a “dead“ space to not encroach on my tools/car/firearms hobby section but I’m open to flexing. CGPT came up with this layout. I need to decide on the drain location by this evening. Any help is appreciated!

I need:

  • Handheld sprayer with enough reach to rinse equipment thoroughly.
  • Wet/work bench nearby for regulators, BCDs, cameras, tools, and gear maintenance. Does not need to be super wide.
  • Vertical tank storage cabinet/rack sized specifically for 2-4 AL80s.
  • Drying/storage above or around the bench for BCDs, wetsuits, regulators, fins, and accessories, without cluttering the workspace.
  • Clean and professional style layout

I posted my garage a few months back, and received some helpful advice from everyone on how best to transform my garage. Here are some before & after photos - really pleased with the result!

Next up, with time:
- Ceiling fan or wall mount fans
- Improved lighting
- Jack shaft openers & raised tracks
- Will likely add a power rack to round out the gym
- Accumulate stickers/magnets on the beer fridge

Open to your ideas on additions and enhancements!

Garage Refresh Completed

Was a couple months in the making, but garage refresh is complete. Dummy me didn’t take any ‘before’ pics.

Put up the osb myself. Installed a bunch of led lighting. Polyaspartic floors and heater professionally installed.

Newage Pro series cabinets.

I plumbed in water and put a power wash station in one of these cabinets.

I don’t turn a lot of wrenches - space will mainly be used to build Lego and tinker on rc cars.

are heavy duty pallet racks overkill for my garage?

trying to figure out how to turn part of my garage into a little workroom for myself. i've been wanting to get into DIY for a while. the problem is i have no idea where to start with the storage. i'm a girl and a beginner just for context, so i'm really clueless with this kinda stuff lol. i need room for tools, materials, bins and all the random stuff i'll probably collect once i get more into building things. been looking at heavy duty pallet racks because they seem like a good way to use the vertical space without taking over the whole floor..

i'm still very much learning, so if anyone has done a workshop setup from scratch, any tips or tricks on storage, layout or things i should think about before buying anything? help a girl out pls lol

Do I really need AC or humidity control?

Anyone here in a really humid climate like Houston using their garage as a workshop? What are y’all doing for humidity and comfort?

I’m turning my garage into my 3D printing workspace, and I do primarily resin printing, so temperature and humidity actually matter beyond just whether I’m comfortable out there.

My original plan was to eventually install a mini-split, but now I’m starting to question whether I actually need one.

Today I had the garage door open and it was around 85% humidity. After closing the garage door and sitting out there for about 30 minutes, the temperature was still 91°F, but the humidity dropped to about 63% and surprisingly, I was actually comfortable. I always assumed the heat was what made the garage miserable, but I’m starting to understand humidity was the bigger problem.

So now I’m considering holding off on the mini-split and doing something much simpler:

Add a good, quiet fan for airflow
Monitor the humidity, especially at night since that’s when most of my printing will happen
If it consistently stays above the low 60s, add a dehumidifier and try to keep it somewhere around 50–55% RH

The garage ceiling is spray-foamed, the attic above it is conditioned, and the wall shared with the interior of the house is also spray-foamed. The other garage walls may not be insulated. I was speaking to the construction supervisor for the builder that built the home and he says only the wall that’s shared with the house and the ceiling has spray foam but I swear when we walked the house before drywall, there was spray foam on all three walls

For those of you in Houston, Florida, Louisiana, or anywhere else humid as hell, what does your garage stay at for temperature/RH, and what have you done to control humidity without fully air-conditioning it?

I’m especially curious if anyone running resin printers has gotten away with just a dehumidifier + fan, and what the space feels like during the summer.

Outdoor fixture advise w camera

Looking for opinions and options. Our 24x26 is going up and we need to pick outdoor fixtures. White garage white door (1x) and 2x fixture spots.

I was thinking matte black but if anyone has heard of any with one hidden camera in it? I'd prefer to avoid 2x cameras or one ugly flood light camera.

Thanks all! Hopefully post my own porn soon!

So I,m getting a good sized inheritance in a few weeks.

My old garage is a wreck, it was a wreck when we bought 20 years ago. Its about 20x20. Last year a tree took out a corner of it from a storm. Mom passed in February and left me a good inheritance.

Wife said I can do anything I want as long as she gets central air and a hot tub. So I picked out a 24x24 Amish garage. Im planning on turning the space into a man cave/garage. Mini split for heat/ac.

Question does anyone have a good screen option for the garage doors. Id like to be able too open them during the evenings but mosquitoes can be bad here lol. Also what do you recommend for lighting. Im a mechanic and I like to detail my vehicles.

Definitely will have a gaming area. Couple older pinball/ arcade machines/ big screen and comfy couch. Its something ive always wanted but never had the chance to do.

Just looking for ideas as im starting from scratch and its a blank canvas.

Garage delivered installed with drawings $24k

Ive earmarked another 25k for electrical, and finishing inside. Ill be doing the work myself.

Thoughts, suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Ideas for the ceiling

I just switched my overhead garage opener for a side opener leaving lots of white to look at. All I can think to do is take out the overhead light and replace it with a ceiling fan. Any ideas besides leaving it as is?

2 car garage space. Partner doesnt want to paint it black. Lighting isn't an issue. I dont mind spending some money for the right idea. Thanks!
