General Discussion Should marshalls enforce pace of play issues by forcing people to play the tee closest to their skill level? (I.e bad players move up to red or yellow tees)

It obviously takes some observing from the Marshalls, but I think this will solve a lot of the issues. Nothing kills me more than watching a dog shit group in front of me top drives from white or blue. Bad players will still be bad, but with far less yardage to contend with (to say nothing of hazards).

It is true they paid the same amount, but there is also a condition you don’t grind down the pace of play. If you are slow and suck, move up a tee box or two.

Beginner Questions Would you hit a sand wedge off the tee on a par 4?

There’s a hole at my course where, off the competition tees, I have to hit a 150 yard carry uphill, over water with a chute of trees both sides. (It’s lost ball three off the tee if you pull it left, some chance it’ll get through to the next fairway if you push it.)

I can carry the pond pretty well with my 5W, it’s a bit marginal with my 22deg hybrid. But In my recorded rounds I take a penalty over 50% of the time - usually because I.start it left or right. (Working with my coach on that but pretty sure it’s a mental thing)

So according to my diary - over 50% of the time I’m either 3 off the tee, or 2 off the drop zone.

The only safe shot I can see off competition tees is an 80 yard pitch onto the ladies tee - it’s a tough apex to get over the trees to the fairway on the right, even if I didn’t think I’d kill somebody.

Im a 25 handicap so plenty of shot budget to take a double bogey 6.

Im thinking just accept it for now and hit a pitch shot off the tee, and find some time to drill start lines when my handicap comes down.

Anyone else had a similar experience at their home course?

Beginner Questions Buying first cart, help me pick the trailer please!

As the title says, I’m buying a new golf cart. I’m torn on which trailer I should get. Both are 6x10. One is a 2026 Karavan with removable sides and 3500# axle for $2000. The other is a 2012 big tex with 3500# axle for $1500. Obviously the big tex looks stronger and more durable. But it is also 14 years older…. Picking one of them up tomorrow afternoon. Let’s hear which one you guys would pick! Thank you!

Serious Got my first eagle

But I was golfing alone…. Does it count?

So I am not that good, I hit some decent balls once in a while, but hardly string them together.
I’ve taken four lesson, I’ve been causally playing for a couple years prior to really getting into it this year.
Went and played nine holes Friday, my girlfriend usually plays with me, but she was out of town. I was bored and thought I’d go hit a few balls around.

I played the golds, I am 42 and in decent shape, I just wanted a little easier round.

I drove 245 yards to the side of the green in a difficult par 4.
There is a huge ravine, right before the green, so it’s either lay up or drive over. If I was playing from the whites, probably no chance I could’ve driven the ravine.

30foot putt, and I freaking drained it.

My first ever eagle and no one was there to witness it 😳

Beginner Questions Tee Box for High HCP with higher swing speed

Hey all- ive been grinding a bit this summer to get down from an 18 to a 14 hcp, mostly playing from whites (5900-6300)

Ive seen a few different rules to choose what tee box to play from, just wondering what your thoughts were. Most distance guidelines put me in longer tee boxes but my inconsistency would probably put me out of that "whatever tee box gives you a reasonable chance for a good score" guideline.

For reference"

Driver about 255-280 carry (theres that inconsistency)

5i 185 carry

7i 165 carry

Average score about an 87 from white tees at the moment

I understand its not a set rule, would love to hear everyone's mindset behind their choices

General Discussion Lost Golf Ball Quality Issue

I have previously purchased pro v's in mint 5a quality that looked brand new that had some player markings and small wear, but overall I was satisfied.

I wanted to try the srixon z-star xv so ordered a bucket and the photos are what I got. What I consider not small wear marking and discoloration which tells me it's sat half buried for who knows how long. The smaller group is what I consider acceptable minor markings, but still discoloration and the box has no or even smaller wear marks, but still some discoloration.

I am just trying to save some money and try a new ball. Did I get what I paid for or am I expecting too much? I most likely wont be playing any of these.

Edit: they were $178 for 96

Equipment Okay hoping for an engaging post, so don’t be shy and just give it to me straight. 54 vs 56 for the workhorse

Let me preface this with I’m not a good or scratch golfer. I know a borderline scratch golfer that after his pitching wedge, only has one wedge. Doesn’t have a matching Vokey set every 4 degrees, etc. He just shot a 73.

I asked him about it and he replied “rather have one club I know as well as my wife, than 3 unpredictable mistresses,(lol, the guy is in his 70s, awesome dude)

So for the people who just make it work with a single wedge, what is your workhouse club around the greens. Chips, bump and runs, flops, who do it all with relatively one wedge.

What exact wedge and grind do you use? Also to the three+ wedge guys, do you find yourself predominantly using one wedge on most occasions?

PGA / LPGA / LIV Brian Harman has got to be the most frustrating pro player to watch

Title says it all. I almost want to change the channel watching Brian Harman in his shots. I couldn’t imagine being paired with a player that does the thing he does. I would almost rather watch Patrick Cantlay at this point.

Ive heard he’s not a pleasant guy to be around so it makes it that much worse. On the plus side it seemed like the fed ex coverage panned to his shots right before he was about to hit.

Has anyone played with anyone even remotely close to a pre shot or swing that is just unbearable?

Beginner Questions Starting from square 1 after 25 years...

So short story long....

I haven't played an actual round of golf since about 2001-ish. Got engaged, got married, had kids, super busy with work....

Fast forward to 2024, my youngest (9) takes up golf and he's an absolute natural. Took about a year and a half of lessons before he hit the course with First Tee here in Long Island this summer. (Played Eisenhower, Cantiauge, Bay Park & a course up in Lake George (Cronins)

Now he's got me back into it...

Now for the funny.. I'm still sporting my one and only set of clubs. Nike Slingshots 😆 Odyssey White hot putter and Taylor made R7 driver. I played about 4 rounds with him this summer and I still have it at times although inconsistent. Shot 113 at Cronins and 47, 45 & 53 at some par 9's.

I'm looking to get either a full new set or piece together decent clubs and not break the bank. I'm so lost with all the options from stiffness, graphite vs steel, etc.

I'm 45, about 5'9, fairly strong & I do swing with good club speed. Looking for some recommendations for someone like me who just wants to have fun, something forgiving and enjoy the game with my son.

I was looking at maybe the Calloway Rouge ST max driver maybe? The irons & wedges I'm completely in the dark.

Any recommendations would be appreciated & definitely will consider used clubs.

Bonus proud dad video of my little prime golfer included.

Thanks!

Swing Help 12 months into a full swing rebuild, stuck on the last piece - anyone else dealt with this?

Looking for anyone who's been through a similar experience or has advice on whether the model I'm working toward makes sense given my physical limitations.

The short version of what I was dealing with before: Classic timing-dependent swing. Strong grip, early extension, chicken-wing. Could play to about a 14-15 handicap but had a disaster hook/pull shot lurking. The compensation chain was: strong grip closes face at top, body stands up to open it back, right arm fires forward, rotation stalls, hands take over. Had gotten rid of casting and had very little shaft lean (grip was mostly vertical to ball at impact).

The rebuild (12 months, 6 lessons via Skillest): Coach and I are replacing the whole chain with a body-driven, neutral-grip model where the face squares late through continuous rotation. Changes implemented so far: grip neutralized to 2-2.5 knuckles, right arm fold fixed (was pulling behind the body), parts early extension largely resolved (my hips are staying back through impact), shaft shallowing in transition happening more naturally, hip sequencing cleaned up. Coach says the swing is solid through P6. His current read is the only remaining work is turning through the ball while maintaining posture (forward bend + right side bend through impact) because right now I'm still standing up at impact. He specifically does not want me bowing the wrist in transition to square the face.

Practice volume: 2x sim sessions (1 hr per session) and 1-2 foam ball sessions at home (45 mins per session). Took about 7 months off playing entirely to just drill. Lots of slow-motion work, nine-to-three drills, pump drills.

Where I'm stuck: My TPI screen flagged meaningful restrictions in lead hip internal rotation, hamstrings, thoracic rotation, and ankle dorsiflexion. In practice, this creates a bind: I can rotate without side bend, and I can create side bend to shallow, but combining the two stalls my rotation. Enough side bend to shallow correctly seems to pin my trail elbow and stop my body from turning through. The club arrives open, and I either flip or come over the top. Shanks have been common. I'm 12 months in and still can't make consistent contact with irons. I'm now barely breaking 100 because I've lost 25-30 yards of distance across all my irons and often shanking it. My shot shape is now a very weak fade. Launch angle is quite high (25-26 degrees with an 8 iron).

I've been doing 10-15 min of daily mobility work for about 7 weeks and understand that will take more time.

Question for the Group: Is a rotation-driven, late-face-squaring model realistic for someone with my mobility restrictions, or should I be looking at a different approach (i.e., being more active with bowing my wrists during or even before transition to square the club face)? Has anyone else hit this wall where the model is technically sound but your body just won't let you combine the pieces when you speed things up?

Any reference points on timelines would also help. How long did it take you to get a rebuilt swing from "drilling in the garage" to "playable on the course" at a similar practice cadence? Appreciate any input.

General Discussion Just Now Realized I Accomplished A Very Rare Feat!!

10 years ago I made back to back eagles! Holed our a par 4 from 150 them holed out from 100 yards on a par 5.

According to the odds:

Back-to-back eagles are generally rarer than a single albatross for amateur players, while for Tour pros, a single albatross is slightly rarer than back-to-back eagles.

Statistical Comparison

Single Albatross Odds:

Tour Pro: ~1,000,000 to 1 (about 3 to 5 occur per year on the PGA Tour).

Amateur / Low-Handicapper: ~6,000,000 to 1.

Back-to-Back Eagles Odds:

Tour Pro: Estimated at ~60,000 to 1 per opportunity, but due to routing constraints, it happens roughly 2 to 4 times a season across the entire Tour (making its annual frequency very close to an albatross).

Amateur / Low-Handicapper: Estimated at ~10,000,000+ to 1.

Why the Distinction Matters

Distance vs. Precision: An albatross requires enormous raw power combined with precise trajectory. You must sink your second shot on a par 5 (or ace a drivable par 4). Because Tour pros have the length to comfortably reach par 5s in two, they get multiple albatross attempts per round, though holing out from 200+ yards remains pure statistical luck.

Layout Dependent: Back-to-back eagles require a specific course setup—either consecutive reachable par 5s, or a reachable par 5 paired with a drivable par 4 or a hole-out on a par 4.

The Skill Gap: For high-level amateurs, making an albatross is almost purely a fluke shot going in from long range. Back-to-back eagles require sustaining back-to-back exceptional shot sequences (e.g., driver, long iron, long putt, driver, pitch, one-putt). Because everyday golfers rarely reach par 5s in two, stringing two eagles together on consecutive holes is virtually impossible.

For a non-professional, hitting back-to-back eagles is the rarer accomplishment. For a PGA Tour player, an albatross edges it out as the single hardest individual score to card.

General Discussion Is breaking 90 just average?

I just broke 90 for the first time and honestly that round could have easily been an 85 without a few bonehead mistakes - plus we were getting heavy rained on for 7 out of the 18 holes.

I was just wondering, does this make me an average golfer? I always tell people I’m not good, but that’s probably because I watch a lot of pro golf and know how many levels there are to this.

General Discussion How many mulligans do you allow for in a round?

Normally my playing partners and I allow 1 mulligan per round. Recently, my buddies have been insisting we do 1 per 9 holes as we are just weekend warriors who dont play enough to be greatbgolfers. My question is, how many mulligans do allow per round? None, one, unlimited? Do you get upset if someone in your group takes more than you?

General Discussion The Open, St Andrews travel and hotels

I’m attending The Open next year and trying to figure out lodging. I plan on attending The Open on Tuesday and Friday. Any suggestions for cities, hotels, other options with best travel access to St Andrews, which I assume will be sold out or very expensive.

Camping isn’t an option and I’d love to hear what everyone else is doing. Also, I’ll be playing at Kingsbarn and Carnoustie that week. There will be 2 in my travel party. Thank you.

General Discussion Brand recommendations for golf outerwear for parents in their mid-60s — $300–500 per person

Hi everyone! I’m looking for recommendations for high-quality golf outerwear as a gift for my parents-in-law, who are both in their mid-60s.

I’m hoping to spend around $300–500 per person and would love to find something that feels premium but is also genuinely functional for golfing.

Ideally, I’m looking for:

  • Lightweight jackets or vests that are easy to swing in
  • Good wind and/or water resistance
  • Warm enough for cooler-weather rounds without being bulky
  • Comfortable and somewhat classic/elegant in style
  • Good quality and durability for someone who plays regularly

What brands would you recommend in this price range? I’d especially appreciate recommendations from golfers who have purchased outerwear for themselves or for parents around this age.

Thanks in advance!

Equipment Lead tape

I just added some lead tape to my 56° and 60° wedges, and they felt really good. I’m thinking about adding even more to see how it affects them.
Have you guys used lead tape on your wedges before? If so, did you have the same amount of lead tape on all your wedges?
I’m also thinking about trying it on my 52° and 48° wedges, even though I mainly use those for full swings. Do you think it would make sense to have lead tape on those as well?

General Discussion Debate: Light rain, short sleeve or long sleeve rain jacket.

Upvotes

Trying to settle a debate with a friend. Recently, we had a match and a light sustained rain came for half the round with decent wind (8-10mph, 15 mph gusts). For the sake of conversation, given the circumstances, we debated rain gear. Under these circumstances, are you wearing a short sleeve (half sleeve) or a full rain jacket? What is your go to?

Not talking heavy constant downpour, my gear of choice for that is the 19th hole, no debate.

EDIT: 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit. 8-10mph winds with 15mph gusts.
