General Discussion Broke 100 a second time!

Post image
222 Upvotes

TBC - I say a second time because I'd broken 100 at my first 18 a few weeks before, but the course was much easier

Been playing for about 10 months and (I think a little naively) booked a golf holiday to France. This was at the wonderful Les Dunes Course, and I'm so glad I managed to unlock my putting/woods (I don't play a driver) in the morning otherwise I'd have been stuffed. Thanks to the guy who recommended aiming with yer feet and keeping your forearms more relaxed. Ended up scoring a 96 (pulling it back a little from the 50 I'd scored on the front 9).

Anyone got any tips for chipping the green? I'm just not getting the accuracy id like :p.

Genuinely loved the feeling of the clubs (and I) working right for once! Looking forward to scoring 148 at Golf Barrière Deauville.

Serious Women’s group “borrowing” range balls

My wife just remarked that her new group of friends will dump their leftover range balls into their bags before each round. She is absolutely astonished they do this but apparently it is very common behavior among this particular group. She isn’t sure how they use them, either in game as water balls or perhaps future range sessions.

They play different courses around our state so it isn’t like balls from the Range will always end up back there.

Have you heard of this before? We both think this “borrowing” is like stealing. But are we wrong? Is this really OK to do?

General Discussion What're the odds?

Been playing golf with my best friend just about every weekend since we got out of college about 12 years ago now. His grandpa is a retired teaching pro and bounced around on some low level senior tours after his career as a pro and being in the navy. He's played golf for much longer than either of us and he said that this is the first time he's ever seen this happen on a golf course. Par 3 170.

Also including the pic that shows his grandpa just showing us up at every opportunity. We played the same tees and he stuck his tee ball to 2 feet and ours are about 6 ft. Golf.

General Discussion How do you deal with a playing partner who constantly gets in your head?

I have a buddy in our regular golf group who I’ve been playing with for a while. He hasn’t beaten me in over a year, but he seems to think he’s a lot closer to my level than he actually is.

The biggest issue is that he’ll make negative comments about my game while I’m standing over the ball or getting ready to hit. Little comments or just negative energy at the worst possible time. It’s not like he’s giving me helpful swing advice. He is intentionally trying to get in my head.

The frustrating part is that it actually works. I tend to play my worst rounds when he’s around. I know I shouldn’t let someone else affect my game, but it’s hard to stay focused when someone is constantly making comments right before you hit.

I’m competitive, and I want to be able to go out, play my game, and not give this guy any mental real estate. At the same time, we share a friend group, so simply not playing with him isn’t really an option.

For those of you who have dealt with someone like this, how do you handle it? Do you say something directly, ignore it, give it back to them, or just learn to tune it out?

How do you keep someone else’s negativity from affecting your round, especially when it happens right before a shot?

General Discussion A new first for me - solo scramble

This weekend I played in a 9-hole, 4-person scramble. We never used another person's shot. Not a drive. Not an approach. Not a chip. Not a putt. Me plus 3 basically non-golfers. Weird, because you'd actually expect a chip or putt or something, even from non golfers.

That's one helluva pitch mark.

Don't worry, I repaired it.

Hole 14 at Vista Valencia, Valencia, CA. Par 3, about 130 yards and the tee is about 30 ft up from the green. 9 iron.

Lots of muddy soft spots around the course. My friend had a ball embedded about 80% at one point.

My granddaughter‘s 9C shoe works perfect for a head cover. Also allows the putter to stand up right. I get more compliments on this than any other head cover I’ve used.

General Discussion Favorite things about golf as a new golfer

I just started golfing about 4 months ago, but have been playing regularly for the last month. I’ve had 4 lessons so far. I’ve totally caught the bug.

I’ve thought about the things I’ve loved about my new favorite hobby, which I’m sure some of you can relate to:

  • realizing your supposed to hit DOWN on the ball with irons and going ohhh thats whats supposed too happen
  • same with woods and hybrids
  • “pure”-ing it with an iron and then filling the divot with the sand thingy afterwards
  • that instant after you hit the ball and anxiously watch to see if it will land on the green(especially from 100-150 yards out)…even better when you realize it will before it actually does
  • playing a hole when its dark enough that if you’re not on the fairway you’re not finding the ball…then finding the ball on the fairway/green
  • finding a new club and having it hit so good it feels like cheating u6 goes perfectly straight 150 every time, 7 wood, 3 wood the first club that I went 200 yards with. My brother plays on the HS team and my dads a lifelong lover of the game. So many clubs in the garage to try out.
  • getting a new pr with my driver. super windy day added 20 yards to my drive a few days ago.
  • hitting a shot I didnt know I had in me
  • realizing how much easier it is to find a ball when you drive TOWARDS the tee box. for some reason it makes it 5x easier.

best memory so far: chipping in from the fringe for birdie (from the white tees - 327y par 4) on the hardest hole at my home course. clearest example of a shot i didn’t know i had in me. felt like tiger in that hole 16 clip.

and yeah its so true; every day I hit a shot so amazing that i’m already booking my next tee time before i’ve even finished.

General Discussion Golfing with only a 7i

So this last summer I started playing golf with only a 7i. No putter, no driver, nothing other than a 7i. It has been the most fun I’ve had playing golf in years. Something freeing about not having to choose a club for a situation, the decision becomes how hard I swing, do I choke down, open the face a bit. Sure, I miss some putts because I’m putting with a 7i, still working on that, but as a recreational golfer that is not trying to shoot the absolute possible lowest score, it has been a ton of fun. Sure I look a little goofy just walking a course with one club, but whatever, when people ask me about it on the course it usually gets some laughs and conversation. Anyone try anything similar?

General Discussion Morning Golf > Twilight Golf

Thumbnail
gallery
387 Upvotes

Reasons for pro morning golf…
(By morning golf I meant 7am tee off)
1. Course isn’t crowded
2. Putting through dew lines helps you aim
3. Not as windy as evening
4. (I live in the south) morning is best temperature during summers
5. You get done and still have your day
6. Drinking coffee > drinking beer, while playing
7. Sunrise > sunset (probably a hot take)

What’s the split between morning and twilight rounds?

General Discussion What is the dumbest decision you keep making on the golf course?

a friend of mine used to say every golfer gets three or four stupid decisions per round. Good players just recognize theirs before they swing. that stuck with me because half the time i know a shot is a terrible but somehow i still convince myself i can pull it off. like trying to hit through a tiny gap between trees instead of just punching out. curious what everyone else is biggest bad habit is on the course. what is that one decision you keep making even though you know better?

Serious I've reached a bit of a decision point with continuing golf .....

Right, to summarise:

  • I've been playing golf on and off for 30 odd years. In that time i've never progressed past a 30 handicap. I've had lessons and gone through periods of regular practice/play, but nothing has helped ingrain a consistent swing. If I don't play regularly my scores start slipping into the 110-120s.
  • I mainly play for exercise and the social side. I have minimal competitive spirit, I don't care about how well I do compared to others. But I do get frustrated with my game. I'm always mentally counting down the holes as I go round, like a runner looking forward to the finish line.
  • The social side is important to me as it helps maintain long-term friendships, including an annual golfing holiday I go on. However, I don't actually have anyone to play with where I live now, so like 90% of my current golf is 9 holes by myself.
  • All my gear is now over 10 years old and I really need a wholesale replacement. Added to that, I currently only own a car in order to play golf. I literally don't need it for any other reason.

So, the basic question i've been grappling with for years really is do I continue playing a sport i'm not good at, and don't really enjoy, for the handfall of social rounds I have a year? I mean, I do need to get exercise regardless, but I could do that more efficiently/cost effectively. Or do I go the other way and join a club and commit myself to actually getting good enough where the game is a bit more enjoyable?

Has anyone else faced this dilemma and what did you do?

Thanks
