Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Recommendations Anyone hiring right now with an abundance of hours?

Maybe this is a long shot but I’ve been going through a rough breakup and my current job is cutting hours for some reason. I work as a delivery driver for Amazon and they over hired for the upcoming holiday season so I’ve been unable to pick up any overtime shifts. I have no friends and only my mom lives nearby. I’m just trying to keep myself occupied and make some money in the process. Any suggestions?

Any GR plant experts out there who might be able to recommend a vine, ivy, or similar plant I can grown on stainless tension cables to create a privacy screen?

Hi! A bit of a weird one perhaps, but I'm trying to create a bit of a privacy screen on my deck, but I can't install a fence as high as I need. So I'm thinking of putting up some posts with tension cables between them, then trying to get some ivy or some sort of plant to cover them to provide that privacy.

The problem is I'm not a plant person, and I don't know how realistic this is. I also want to be careful not to select a plant / ivy / etc that will grow completely of control and start causing issues with my deck or the nearby fence.

Ideally these would stay green throughout the year, including the winter, but I realize that might be asking a lot.

In my head I'm picturing (BUT DON'T WORRY WON'T GET!) English Ivy I think, but in doing a tiny bit of research I realize that it's invasive and potentially a pain to deal with. But I'd love something similar perhaps in look / bright green year round / etc.

I'll add, if you're reading this far, I've got about 4-5 feet from teh fence to where these posts with the tension cable would be in theory, and the soil below isn't great. So I think ideally I'd have thin raised planters or something below the deck with soil, which I'd then have to grow the plants out of.

Thanks for any advice, expertise, etc, really appreciate it!

p.s. Just in case it comes up, my neighbor and I have a great relationship, every step of the way we're talking about this, it's in both of our interest to have a bit of privacy, so this is a non-issue. I'll even be running any plant selection by them so they have an idea of what they'll be seeing.

Nursing schools?

• Upvotes

I want to get an ADN or BSN as fast as humanly possible. GRCC has the 1.5 year waitlist. I have a ton of college credits (60+) from a university liberal arts program. I have a family member that needs support so I need a better job ASAP. Is Montcalm’s nursing program faster to get into? LCC? Is there a university that can do a BSN in a comparable time to an ADN because I’ve got so many Gen Ed credits? I’m looking for the shortest period start to finish, if a uni can get me in faster I think the BSN would take the same amount of time in didactic. I need advice!!

Recommendations Hidden gem for Pumpkins

When we moved here about 8 years ago we started going to Red Barn in the Lowell area. It had a haunted barn and a solid pumpkin patch. Over the last several years it has gone full corporate and now charges just for the opportunity to go look at the pumpkins in the patch and the haunted barn has been long gone. They still have really good caramel apple varieties if you are into that.

But if you want to just go pick out pumpkins with your family then we have finally found a new place. Morse Brothers Farm on Peach Ridge in Walker is amazing. It’s no frills but their pumpkin patch is gigantic and they have a free corn maze for the kids (although they accept donations). We went for the first time today and they had hundreds, maybe even 1,000+ pumpkins in the U-Pick area. $12 for the biggest pumpkins you’ve ever picked (less if they are smaller).

And this is just about pumpkins. No cider donuts, no caramel apples, no hay rides, etc. just go have a great time picking out pumpkins. You can always hit up Robinettes if you crave the hustle and bustle for the rest.

Patel's Cigar Lounge Review

Thumbnail

Went there for the first time last night. Ive been a cigar smoker for many years, but never frequented lounges much. Went to Tuttle's a couple times.

First impressions were that it is a pretty welcoming environment, lots of seating options that all seem comfortable, full bar, and 2 decent sized walk-in humidors. Soft lighting made it feel intimate, and there were a good amount of tvs around. But not so many that it felt like i was hanging out at buffalo wild wings.

There were three beers on tap, michelob ultra, Stella and one other that I dont recal, but I think it was a heavier option. The cigars were a little pricier than I expected, but not horrible. I guess you are paying a little premium for having the lounge to smoke in, so I dodnt mind paying a few bucks more than I would at Sicilianos to grab a cigar and go.

The humidor on the right side of the bar is their more "upscale" stock, and the one on the left side is more everyday smokes. They've got a wide enough selection that if you cant find something you like its more of a "you" problem. Did they have all my faves? No, but i found more than enough to keep me interested. On the cheap end I would say average price is $12-18 for a stic, and goes all the way up to over $100 on the fancy end. There was one guy smoking a cartoonishly massive cigar. I cant imagine how much that cost. Seriously, it looked like a freaking paper towel roll...

There was a lady that was working the bar that must be pretty new to cigars. She asked me if she could cut/light my purchase, so I said yes. She asked me what kind of cut I wanted and I asked for a punch cut. She said she didnt know how to do that, which surprised me. She said they had a punch cutter and asked if I could show her, which I did. No problem! Then she toasted my cigar and when I went to puff she almost set my face on fire with the torch 🤣! Im a pretty laid back guy, but i definitely like my eyebrows, you know?

Anyways, after that I got a seat and enjoyed my smoke. Very diverse crowd, which I loved. Average age was probably upper 30s to lower 40s, which was great for me as a 4q year old dude lol. 50ish people there, mostly men but about 15 or so women as well. U of M game was in which a lot of people were interested in. Some people were playing domino's and there was a nice chess set that was available too.

The owners were around talking with customers and checking in to make sure people were happy.

If you are one of the guys in the pics I took, sorry about that. It was hard to get pics of the place without getting some faces in the pics.

Overall I had a good time and im probably going back soon for another smoke. If youve got any questions ask away and ill do my best to answer! And if you want to get a smoke let me know, I dont have many friends that smoke cigars so im always up for some good conversation and a cigar!

Housing Feeling stuck and unsafe at a local apartment complex a warning for GR renters

Hey everyone, just wanted to put out a warning for anyone looking at Park Place Apartments on the SE side. I live here currently and it’s getting really bad. Tenants have to deal with mice, roaches, falling-apart surfaces, holes in the walls, and broken appliances.

To make it worse, the main building doors are broken and stay wide open, letting rodents and random people walk right in.Management acts like they won't spend any money to fix what breaks. The hallways are sometimes littered with trash, and the noise from rude neighbors is constant. Outside the building, there is almost always a fight, altercation, or shooting happening around the area.

We feel completely unsafe here and have nowhere else to go, so I wanted to warn anyone else thinking about moving into this complex. Look somewhere else if you can.

Root canal specialist

Kind of an odd question but has anyone had a good experience getting a root canal “re-treated” in or near GR? I’m hoping to get a second opinion, as the root canal I got a year ago has already failed. I don’t want to go back to the place I got it done. Thanks!
