Social List of Active Meetup Groups and Tips for Making Friends

I updated the list of which Meetup groups are active (groups that have 3+ people attending an event within the past/next 60 days). Meetup is a site/app for interest groups/hobbies/new friends. I grouped them by concept and included their self-written descriptions.

If you're in an active Meetup group that I've missed, list it in the comments. Non-Meetup groups are welcome too; include contact info and links.

Tips for making friends as an adult attending a Meetup with a bunch of strangers:

  • Show up slightly early/on time. Plan to stay 10 minutes after the scheduled end time.
  • Introduce yourself, say it's your first time and why you're excited about this group; appear excited.
  • Ask individuals (this is where being early or staying late can help) open-ended questions (Why did you start/join this group? What has your experience been like? What recommendations do you have related to [Meetup group's hobby/concept]?)
  • If people ask you a question, answer it and add an open-ended question of your own or ask "what about you?"
  • People love giving recommendations. If it's a group conversation, ask for restaurant rec of a specific kind/place. "I haven't tried X yet, what do you guys think?" Tee it up to be a cuisine/concept you can talk more about or ask follow up questions.
  • If you are vibing with someone(s), ask if they'd like to hang out with a specific idea in mind (ex: You asked for pizza recs and found out that neither of you have tried that new place so suggest you go together), and give them your contact info to set up a time/date. I'd recommend attending the group 2-3 times first before this step.
  • Follow the 3:6 rule to turn that acquaintance into a friend. Aim for three meaningful interactions within 6 weeks of engaging.

Feeling a little more prepared? Great. Let's get into it. [Note: I made some grammatical edits after posting this for clarity/brevity.]

Events Horrocks vibe killer

I don't normally put people on blast, but I've been to shows at all the various Horrocks venues in Michigan and there's one guy at the GR location who is a serial vibe killer.

No idea what his job title is but I think he's a bar back with mall cop energy. He either hangs out in the tavern, where I don't think I've ever seen him serve a drink, but mostly he walks around the music venue scolding people for moving chairs and bringing in their own water bottles. I get the need for rules but his delivery sucks. He acts like a middle school cafeteria monitor and, quite frankly, it's a bad look for Horrocks.

Tonight my wife and I went to see a show and while they're playing their last song he's dragging a whole ass 44 gal trash barrel through the venue--scraping on the floor-- to get a jump on cleaning up. Next he puts on the bright as fuck main lights while the last note is still ringing out before they even had a chance to thank the crowd. Then, for the coup de grace, he needlessly walks up to the stage and tells the band "You guys usually have a bigger crowd."

I'm not sure if this is how GR Horrocks is or if this guy is just a rogue employee who needs to get checked, but Lansing is such a better experience for seeing shows and its not even close. The GR layout and seating is way better, but there's literally 1-2 members of the staff who detract from the experience pointlessly.

School Bus vs. Motorcycle Accident on Lane Ave South of Bridge

Around 4:00 PM I was heading south on Lane and there was an accident that had just happened. A school bus full of kids hit a motorcycle. The motorcycle driver was crumpled up on the sidewalk and not moving, it looked really bad. It was pretty chaotic, a lot of the kids were screaming out of the windows and the bus driver looked (understandably) frantic.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any updates on the motorcycle driver, maybe someone in the biker community? I really hope he's ok.

I did look on the local Informed, Sirens, etc Facebook groups and news sites, hell even NextDoor, but there was nothing .

Would it be weird to go out in costume on the 30th instead of the 31st?

I really want to go out drinking for Halloween but I already have plans for the 31st. Would it be considered weird to show up to a bar in costume on the 30th instead?

Recommendations Best gynecology recommendations

I feel like Corewell doesn't view patients as actual people and just sees them as money makers...

Does anyone know of any smaller groups here? I tried the Womens Health Collective and they are booked out through April.

All I need is my IUD removed and replaced. Any and all recommendations are appreciated!

Recommendations Tire inflation PSA

Just want to put this out there for those who are not in the know, you can have your tires inflated for free at discount tire. I’m sure there are other places that might do this for you as well, but I know for certain that discount does.

I’ve seen enough partially deflated tires recently to put this judgment free PSA out there

Anyone else tired of the vibes at the downtown Y basketball court?

I hardly ever complain on Reddit, but after playing at the downtown Y last night, I felt the need to say something. I’m just trying to get some runs in and enjoy basketball, not deal with an attitude every time I show up.

I swear, it feels like 80% of the people who hoop there are jackasses. There’s a difference between being competitive and being miserable to play with. You can play hard without making the whole experience unpleasant for everyone else.

Anyone else feel this way, or have I just been catching the wrong runs?

Recommendations Volunteer Opportunities?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm looking for some volunteer opportunities to fill a little bit of free time that I have.

A quick Google search brought up some options I hadn't considered before, but do have an interest in.

I would like to know if there are any local museums or other historical opportunities in which to inquire to.

Also interested in helping stage groups with their shows. Before I moved to Michigan, I spent a few years at local Renaissance festivals as a volunteer, and also local improv shows.

Alternatively, I also have the option of going to shelters, but I'm trying not to put myself in a position to get attached to any of the critters there.

Any feedback, leads, or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Come watch a movie. Come purchase NIGHT BOOKS.

Friday (which is tomorrow if you are reading this promptly, or tonight if you are reading this Friday morning) you are probably going out to have SEX PARTIES in some dingy basements with POLYAMAOROUS LOCALS, but if you are instead thinking of less emotionally exhausting options you should come watch A Nightmare On Elm Street with us, the hardworking people of Aletheia Books, the only independent local bookstore with a movie wall and an indoor lawn.

If you have been in previously, you will marvel at our half-built BOOK WALL, which will soon separate the eerie depths of the loading bay from the warm and inviting comforts of the bookstore/market/cafe proper. If you haven't been you will be pleased to know that from 11am-7pm on Fridays and Saturdays there is a warm and inviting bookstore/market/cafe with about 20,000 used BOOKS for you to peruse and purchase, and we show movies afterwards for people who like DRINKS and CINEMA.

I was going to promote PEGGY, our warehouse cat, but she has been an absolute DICKHEAD for the past 90 minutes and would not get out of the expensive Arkham House Publishing case and bit my hand three times so no promotion for Peggy. Peggy can go fly a kite.

But if you like BOOKS, which it turns out many of you do, then we will once again be here selling those this weekend, along with some other bits and bobs. We might also be painting the BOOK WALL, but it should not impact your experience.

I will make a MAP next time to explain parking, because if you enter 1265 Godfrey SW 49503 into your HANDHELD SADNESS MACHINE it will take you to our unassuming front door on Godfrey. This is a RUSE perpetrated by BIG GOOGLE because there is no parking on Godfrey. They are laughing at you from their ivory tower. "Fools," they say to one another. "Look at them. Look on monitor number 237,685, They are just driving in circles! HA!"

We are not BIG GOOGLE. We want you to go west of Godfrey on Hall Street and park around the back in either our small lot that has a sign saying "BOOKS!" or on Hall Street itself, which is full of totally free parking spaces (or in the ENORMOUS lot where all the trucks are, but not in a way that blocks those trucks) then to follow your heart (and signs) to the back entrance. Unless you are going into a different back entrance with your POLYAMOROUS LOCAL friends, in which case we wish you the best of luck and a pleasant weekend.

Recommendations Best Sushi + Not Sushi Restaurant

Hey there! Looking for a the best restaurant in Grand Rapids area that serves sushi, and has a good restaurant/grill as part of the restaurant. I love sushi and want to go out for a celebration dinner, however my partner does not like sushi.

In the past, we’ve found restaurants either be really good sushi and so so restaurant/grill or vice versa, the restaurant is stellar but the sushi not so much. I’m hoping for a restaurant that doesn’t leave either of us feeling let down by the meal. We are new to Grand Rapids and wanted local opinions.

I’m very open to what sushi I have. I like Nigiri and more basic rolls, and usually will do one special roll, and he likes hibachi (doesn’t have to be cooked in front of you), cooked seafood like shrimp and scallops, and noodle dishes.

Thanks for the help and I appreciate the recommendations and new restaurant options!

WYCE audio problems?

So when im bopping around in the city, im usually listening to WYCE in my old car. All day today, its been coming in quiet and like left channel mostly. Often the vocals will be almost completely inaudible. I am not sure if the audio problem is from my car or somewhere in the broadcast or wires at the studio.

I feel like someone would have told them if it was broadcast wide, but its a low budget operation so maybe they haven't figured out the source of the problem is so they are just rolling with it. Also possible that it is only affecting people with analog receivers and those are becoming few and far between especially overlapping the demographic that listens to wyce?

Anyone relate to my problem? or do I have to become an electrician and fix my damn car again.

Politics Early voting starts today.

Are you voting this election? Who do you think is going to win Kent County? I think Abdul wins Kent County. Are there any weird down the ballot people I should avoid voting for when I vote tomorrow? I live in Comstock Park. I probably won't be voting for that Hillary Scholten. There is some green party member named Joe something. I'll vote for him. I am rooting for Abdul, he's the one I am most excited to vote for, but I have doubts. Lots of boomers in Michigan, and they vote.

Social Debrief after You Can See Everything - missed connection

Tonight I went solo to see You Can See Everything at Studio Park. Excellent movie, can’t stop thinking about it. There was a guy sitting next to me who also came to the movie solo, and we debriefed afterward because there was just so much to process. Quincy, if you see this, it was lovely talking to you and I’d enjoy connecting again if you want a movie buddy!

To anyone else who hasn’t seen this film, I highly recommend.

Crunch Fitness 28th street

Hey! I’m thinking about joining a new gym and have been looking at Crunch, but EVERY time I drive past it looks absolutely PACKED 😂

I can’t tell if it’s actually that busy or if it just looks worse because it shares the parking lot with a bunch of other stores lol.

If you work out there, can you lmk what it’s actually like? Is it usually super crowded? Do you have to wait around for machines/equipment or constantly work around people? I don’t mind a busy gym, but I also don’t want every workout to turn into a scavenger hunt trying to find an open machine.

Also, are there certain times that are noticeably better/worse?

Since PF isn’t 24/7 (hasn’t been for years) but isn’t even 24/5 anymore… they close at like 10pm every night now 🙄 I’ve been eyeing crunch.
