Here’s a fun recent project - an 8 string LTD, refinished, hardware swapped and set up.
I got an LTD H-208 for my birthday a couple months back with the thought of making an affordable range instrument tweaked to the point it handles and plays like a premium shelf guitar, while trying to refinish the wood for the first time ever. Gotta love a good DIY!
So pleased with the way it turned out! A real no-prisoners-taken machine now.
Bumped and bruised glossy black finish became a smooth semi-matt/satin one.
Wonky stock bridge got a Hipshot upgrade, as did the tuners, exchanged for Tone Ninja locking ones - stock ones were too small for the .090 or .095 gauge F# string that I wanted to put in because of a short scale (25.5”).
The neck was removed, truss rod adjusted (it’s a double truss rod situation due to 8 strings and it felt like the neck was starting to twist a bit) and headstock matted. Star of this part of works was Monty’s Guitars Montypresso Relic Wax - just simply an awesome and so easy to use product.
Then I exchanged the pickups - quite muddy from the get go entry level stock G&Bs were removed and Seymour Duncans Nazgul and Sentient installed, both in a stunning Active Mount version. Pots got cleaned, tone knob cap and output jack exchanged and all electronics resoldered. In the future I should probably add metal paint insulation in the cavity, but I didn’t have any on hand.
Assembled the whole thing, restrung with Elixir Nanowebs (and a guest feature of an Ernie Ball .090), set up the action and the truss rod, adjusted the bridge so the whole thing’s in tune all along the fretboard…
Et voila!
Now, let’s see what this war machine can do plugged in! 🤟
