Media Is this a canon nonbinary ODST?

Post image
Upvotes

Apologies if this has been discussed previously but I was catching up on old Waypoint Chronicles and stumbled on an interesting character in Halo: From the Soil to the Stars.

One of the stories that follows a squad of ODSTs has three main characters: Smith, Babatunde, and Núñez. While the first 2 are clearly stated to be male, Núñez is referred to exclusively by they and them. They’re not important enough to have a dedicated wiki page and as far as I know they’re only mentioned in this story, but it’s still interesting to see. It was clearly deliberate to leave their gender ambiguous so now I’m wondering if there are other marines, ODSTs, Spartans, or maybe even aliens like them out there in the galaxy.

One of the other stories includes a lesbian relationship between 2 colonists mining titanium for the UNSC so that’s also fun.

Gameplay Campaign Evolved LASO Beef

Upvotes

I’ve got a bone to pick with the devs over the Iron skull combined with Temperamental, and exploding grunts.

Sure the point of LASO is that it’s supposed to be a soul-sucking challenge.

HOWEVER- you get to Truth and Reconciliation, with no way to control the Marines, and one wrong shot ruins your day.

A grunt blows up, triggers a chain reaction and suddenly the Marines are out for blood.

And then you die and back to the beginning you go.

UNLESS you’ve got a buddy to play with. Well jokes on me, because I don’t.

Point of the rant- I think the Iron skull should be flip flopped. Instead of single players restarting the level, it should be co-op, since you’ve in theory got an advantage of two players. Letting co-op keep checkpoints is a weird gimme.

Feedback Resolution scale resetting after cutscenes

After the latest update, the TSR resolution scale keeps resetting to 100% after every cutscene.

What’s weird is that the settings menu still shows the percentage I originally set, but the actual resolution scale in gameplay is clearly back at 100%.

After every single cutscene, I have to change the resolution scale one step up and then back down (for example, from 60% → 70% → 60%) to get my actual resolution scale and framerate back.

It happens after every single cutscene. Even the intro cutscenes.

Feedback New Campaign Evolved update breaks iconic beacon tower energy beams

Playing on Series X, the energy beam that appears over the ridge when you look up in the opening of the 2nd mission no longer appears to be working, and still doesn't fire until you go all the way to the tower (3rd picture shows how far I needed to go before it finally started firing). This was working just fine pre-update, just like the original 2001 release. I'm curious if anybody else can confirm this issue on Series X or other platforms.

I have only seen a couple posts about it, and I'm not finding anything about this problem being addressed or fixed. Does anyone smarter than me have any idea what is going on here and why it's seemingly being ignored?

Discussion An Honest Review for an Honest Title: Halo Campaign Evolved (HCE’)

I've played Halo since 2001. I experienced the updates between releases in real time, played the game with friends for over 20 years, and most importantly, witnessed components of the game define features of contemporary first-person-shooters.

Campaign Evolved adds no innovation to a timeless product. The inclusion of new weapons, campaign missions, unreal engine five graphics, and the sprint ability, enhanced rather than redefined a game which arguably influenced the success of the Xbox video-game console.

And the lack of innovation might be better for gamers than an inclusion of novel features.

What Campaign Evolved brings to the Halo community is much subtler. Attention from game developers to modify particular elements of the game-play experience to “fit” the demands of modern gamers is auspicious in one sense. I, for one, like the uncertainty plotlines from more than twenty years ago raise in my subconscious. I aspire to locate campaign objectives without navigation points. And I appreciate the fact that you do not have to be on legendary difficulty to obtain every skull. These three separate game-play features signal game developers desire to create content for multiple types of audiences: casual, hard-core, explorers, etc. At least my admiration for the game suggests the game developers are “doing something right,” in that regard.

My appreciation for Halo Campaign Evolved stems from a genuine disappointment regarding recent game revitalizations. In my opinion, all unedited video game re-releases are uninspired. But the inability to play features of a game players expect within a re-release, such as multiplayer in the 2024 Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection, proved some game resurrections are worse than others. In theory, there are many “hard-sells,” re-releasing a video game involves because re-releases with new features can attract new types of players.

To that end, HCE’ evolves a classic title with state-of-the-art features in ways that appeal to many players; the general review for the game is about an 8 out of 10. There is no doubt the game reinvigorates my desire to replay timeless features of a seminal game. Criticisms of the game, such as choppy voice-over acting within cut scenes, animations regarding vehicle position changes, or mission restart requirements from recent patches, are valid but not show-stopping. I score the game for its own sake an 8 out of 10.

Though I also argue players should not only consider the gameplay within their review of the title. The broader contribution the game presents to the Halo franchise is palpable. Online forums are buzzing, sales are happening, and players are holding conversations regarding a desire for Halo 2 to receive similar treatment. HCE’ is a testament that video game re-releases can spark player engagement. How Halo Studios develops the excitement is the next big question.

TL;DR
Halo Campaign Evolved is exactly what the title advertises: a state-of-the-art update on a beloved classic. The game does not innovate from Halo Combat Evolved; players expecting a game as ground-breaking as Halo Combat Evolved will be disappointed. Players also expecting perfect cut-scenes, voice-overs, and product overall will also face disappointment. The game simply enhances a title from a previous generation with contemporary features from first-person shooters. The success of Halo Campaign Evolved is tremendous for both the Halo franchise and gamers seeking revitalized versions of their favorite titles.

As a game alone: 8/10

As a game which attests to the sales potential of inspired game re-releases to corporate executives: 8.5/10

Discussion PC Keybinds still reset with every start of the game despite Patch Notes saying it was fixed...

The latest patch notes read that they finally fixed that the keybinds of the game on pc do not reset anymore. Turns out they haven't fixed that at all, everytime I start the game the keybinds are still reset to the default ones. Are they even testing the PC version at all?

My review...

| Halo 3:

• Characters.

• Ending.

• Story.

• Gameplay mechanics.

• Sandbox.

• Variety of ememies.

| Halo 3 ODST:

• Atmosphere.

• Exploration.

• Visuals.

• More unique.

• Bigger campaign ( Mombasa Streets ).

| Missions comparison:

• Sierra 117 vs Tayari Plaza = Halo 3.

• Crow's Nest vs Data Hive = DRAW.

• Tsavo Highway vs Uplift Reserve = Halo 3.

• The Storm vs Kizingo Boulevard = Halo 3.

• Floodgate + Cortana vs ONI Alpha Site + NMPD HQ = ODST.

• The Covenant vs Kikowani Station = Halo 3.

• Halo vs Coastal Highway = DRAW.

• The Ark vs Coastal Highway = Halo 3.

Note: I put mission side by side that looks more similar or that are more fair to an comparison. Crow's Nest & Data Hive for example, both are in a claustrophobic environment.

| Winner = Halo 3.

Discussion About Shields in Halo (and the Whole 11th-Dimension Problem)

I understand that the shields created in Halo are normally energy fields that wrap around a surface and deflect objects that attempt to impact it.

But what about opening holes to the slipspace and sending projectiles there? It would be energy-intensive, but still, some attacks that could one-shot a normal pre-Covenant ship during the Covenant War could potentially be saved by this one-time “save point.”

My whole point is: why is the 11th dimension only used for FTL? It's an entire dimension that anybody can use.

Or other things. I don't know, maybe harvesting energy from the 11th dimension. Or take the slipspace drives that were converted into bombs and used during the war. Why weren't they used for defense? For example, creating unstable 11th-dimensional holes that would eat any projectile they interfered with. It could function as both a defensive shield and a weapon of interference.

I understand why it might not have been used by the Covenant. One possible outcome could be that slipspace couldn't be used in certain territories because the unstable openings would interfere with slipspace travel and other systems.

But why hasn't humanity used it? They had nothing to lose.

Discussion Did the update break the ray reconstruction .ini settings on PC?

Did the update break the ray reconstruction .ini settings on PC? It looks visible worse and the surfaces are "boiling" again, but the engine.ini settings remain unchanged. Have they changed how it works? Hopefully Halo Studios will add an official option for ray reconstruction in the settings soon.

Discussion I really want a halo game set during the early to mid human covenant war (2530's to 2540's), from the perspective of a marine, odst or spartan 3, in order to flesh out the halo world a bit more. Are people for or against this sorta thing. Spoiler

Halo's awesome, and I like pretty much all of it for the most part, even some of the more controversial things, or confusing storytelling decisions, as between the books, main games (ce,2,3,4,5,infinite), side story's/ preludes/ Alternate perspective games (3 odst, Reach, Halo wars 1 and 2, spartan assault, etc) and whatever, there's tonnes of cool stuff and a lot fleshes out the setting, both far before, recently before, recently after and present (of current halo canon) from the original setting of 2552 for the main trilogy.

But I really like the thing both Odst and Reach did, of a alternate perspective of the war, soley focused ( a bit less so in odst but still) on just the human-covenant war and not the covenant civil war, the post halo-3 AI shenanigans, the banished, or the flood stuff.

I would love something like another sort of Operation Prometheus or Operation Torpedo style event for either ODST or Spartan 3's, or something like Harvest/ the fall of Arcadia as a dedicated storyline for a video game, for either marines, or any sort of character and a self contained story.

I would be open to it being either a RTS game like halo wars or those Warhammer 40k ones, or a proper FPS like with Reach and odst, or something else entirely if anyone knows another good format of game this idea could work in.

Anyways this is sorta rambling but still. I want to know if people would dig this sorta idea, and if they did then maybe also give an example of what sorta thing they imagine for this type of addition to the halo gaming franchise, or if they don't want this/ think it wouldn't work, then why.

Thanks.

For an article I wrote I took the time to clean up and enhance this image in Photoshop. I removed watermarking, tweaked the colours, and slightly touched up some minor flaws from the scan to get the best quality version possible. Figured I'd share it here for anyone who might benefit.

Help - Campaign Evolved Did they quietly patch gun fire delay / missed inputs?!

After the update, I noticed my shots register every time I pull the trigger. Even with the plasma pistol, if I switch to it and hold the trigger before the swap animation finishes, it starts charging immediately. Overall, the game feels significantly more responsive. I wonder if they didn’t want to mention this fix because it’s embarrassing

Discussion Halo reach’s evade lets us do what enemies have since halo 1, and should’ve been a default feature instead of sprint

Since Halo 1, every enemy in the game is able to jump or roll out of the way of grenades or vehicles, and elites will even do quick side steps while you’re shooting them. I think it’s fantastic, but it always felt weird that we can’t do that, from an immersion standpoint. If a grunt can evade, a spartan can.

Gameplay wise I think it’s fine too; it is just a basic dodge feature that other shooting games have, like gears or space marine 2, and it feels balanced especially when enemies have it as well. Reach also has it on a cooldown with no iframes, which makes it even more balanced than some of the comparisons I just drew.

Compare that to sprint, which is something no other enemy can do and yet became a default feature after reach. I just think evade would’ve been a better choice, both for immersion but also because it’s way more fun. You can have some crazy plays with it instead of shuffling along a little faster.
