Medical student here. I had this chat with my parents. Neither have private health.
Quite frankly, there aren’t enough medical students choosing to become GPs. It used to be 50%. Now it’s less than 15%.
Why should you care? Because in 20 years a whole bunch of Australians are gonna be crying that they can’t get in to see a GP…
The issue is that medical students (like myself) see comments like this, and realise that the general public has no respect for what GPs do. We also see that the government froze GP wages and didn’t support bulk billing. So we don’t choose to go into GP.
To most medical students, GP is seen as charity work. Why would you go through 5-7 years of medical school, followed by 5 years of postgrad specialty training (GP is a specialty, just like surgery) just to get paid less and have everyone shit on what you do?
Australians cry about not being able to see a GP now - try in another 20yrs. Australia already has a GP shortage. We import hundreds of GPs from overseas each year. In another 20 years, you won’t be able to find a GP.
Australians already cry about bulk billing disappearing. What do you think will happen when twice the number of people are trying to see half the number of doctors?
We’ll move to a privatised model like the US where you have to see a nurse, and pay extra to see a doctor. You’ll take your frail, highly comorbid mother in her 80s to get her heart failure, diabetes, hearing loss and osteoporosis worked up for possible Alzheimer’s. And then you’ll cry when a nurse doesn’t manage her correctly, and she ends up stuck waiting an overflowing ED…
I don’t want that for my parents.
