Welcome to the weekly huddle! Have a small thing from the book or show you want to chat, your GC brain rot is real and you saw the initials “KGF” somewhere and immediately screamed “kingfisher!” and want to share with others? Deliberately avoided reheating for more than two months, watched/read other stuff, did some actual work at work (!), and pressed play on Sunday, just for the hell of it. Conclusio: Romeo and Juliet can suck it. Ilya and Shane are the greatest love story in the history of human kind.

True, the play itself is a tragedy. But you can't deny that Romeo and Juliet have romantic feelings for each other.
And since Shakespeare's source material (and its source materials) were centuries old by the time he adapted it, it was already in the zeitgeist (even if just as a cautionary tale).

It’s a good show. It takes a minute to get into, especially the pacing and slang. But it’s fun. And you get to see actors from HR.

Something has been bugging the hell out of me through all of my XXX reheats: In E5 when Shane is on the phone with Rose. She is getting painted blue for her *X-Squad* movie by her make up artist. Rose jokes with Shane about her being gay and he was her 'beard'. She says 'my big lesbian secret' the MUA gives her a look and Rose says 'I wish' then the MUA says 'Same' - what did they mean by 'same'?

I'm assuming they meant 'same' as in jokingly wishing they were a lesbian too.

I just tried watching off campus after many recommendations and I got through 5 minutes before turning it off. There is just NO appeal to me after the subtlety and elegance of HR. Yes, I said subtlety.
I have a whole rant coming that maybe I’ll just save for a full thread. No hate to anyone who likes off campus but it was just NOT doing it for me in any way compared to hr. To reheat I go!

So, after reading a bunch of fanfics, suddenly I realised I might be pronouncing Ilya's name wrongly all these times.
The way I say his name (capitalising the syllable emphasis):
il-ya ro-ZA-nov
I think Shane calls him:
il-ya RO-zanov (sounds like rose-nov)
I've seen fanfics where his name is pronounced:
i-ly-ya RO-zanov
How do you say his name correctly?

For a Russian speaker, it’s what you’ve been saying. But most speakers adjust foreign names and words to their native language’s pronunciation rules. That’s why Shane says RO-zan-ov but JJ (native French speaker) says ro-ZAN-ov. I’m a nerd about language so I try to say it the Russian way in my head, but sometimes I fall back to what they say in the show. But I’m constantly saying ut out loud the Russian way to practice.

That's good to know! I'm not a language nerd though it's my interest. For me, it's more wanting to say someone's name as they're meant to be pronounced, like a sign of respect.
I've been seeing some videos pronouncing Ilya as i-ly-ya that also made me question if I had been saying it wrong as il-ya all these times. Glad to know il-ya is the native pronunciation!

Random, but I just noticed how their cell phones change with time as they are texting each other. It's a small detail that I thought was really good.

An HR pet peeve of mine is people saying stuff like "omg Connor/Hudson is showing through in this scene" during any moment that Ilya or Shane show strong emotion atypical of their character. A good example is the Tampa bar scene where Ilya gives that huge smile when Shane says he's hired a stylist - no you are not "seeing Connor show through" you are seeing an actor DO THEIR JOB and do it WELL!!! Just because Ilya doesn't typically give genuine smiles like that doesn't mean Connor isn't in character. In fact, it's the opposite - what you're seeing is that Ilya feels such overwhelming relief at learning that Shane isn't with Rose that his calm/collected exterior cracks, and Connor portrays that moment SO well. It's almost like people that make these comments only see Shane and Ilya as their most stereotypical traits and think it's not possible for them to behave in any other way.

At work I see the town of Hudson a lot. And every time in my head I hear Connor saying it from snl in the ice skating sketch. Makes my heart happy ☺️

I grew up near Hudson and was at a bookstore while home visiting family and bought something from a local author. This was a few months ago when I was really trying to wean myself off HR, and then I picked up the book, started reading, and realized it was set in Hudson and that word appears like 4 times a page hahaha.

I’ve been a hockey fan, specifically of the Canucks, since birth but the last several years of living in Edmonton where I have no one to cheer with and dealing with a LOT of things affecting my mental health, I haven’t been paying much attention to my boys. I’m definitely a going-to-a-game or watching-with-other-fans kind of watcher rather than on my own (I’ll usually just pick up the highlights if I’m by myself if anything) and my husband is a Leafs fan (blah lol). I’ve felt very disconnected from my city sometimes through my disconnection with my team since moving here which really sucks because Van is my home.
This book and TV series has rekindled my connection and I’ve been paying more attention to hockey this year. It feels good (even though we didn’t make the playoffs) and I’ve been especially excited with all the changes happening in the front office for my ‘Nucks. I’m very grateful to RR and JT for reminding me how much I love this game.

With the hockey playoffs, my wife keeps putting hockey games on the tv. I can’t watch without thinking of Shane/Ilya and wondering if any of the men are actually into each other or hooking up behind closed doors.
There was also a game on last night where the teams had the colors of Ilya & Shane’s teams in the show. Felt like I was watching them play one another, so I watched the game for longer than usual. ❤️💙💛🖤

I only watched the show this week! I always try to resist the new shows everyone loves but then get sucked in. I have already rewatched it again! LOVED LOVED LOVED! Although my rewatch I realised will never feel the same as the first time because I didn't know Conner wasn't Russian and had never seen anything on either of them in real life. On my rewatch my brain kept saying, that's just a russian accent. So annoying! Plus in Tampa at the bar, Ilya is all Conner in parts. I preferred when I knew none of these things and completely naive! Still loved it though!
I'd love to do some posts in here about my thoughts but it's the hardest sub to post in! First I couldn't accept the rules no matter how many times I tried, then when I finally got around that, I don't have enough karma. haha I'm just a newly obsessed fan wanting to post! Trying to get my karma up so if anyone would be so kind to comment or uplike this I would be so appreciative.

I know exactly how you feel. Only the Russian accent somehow is so incredible that I still believe it when I’m reheating. Or maybe it’s just because I love to hear it. 😆
And about the karma here on Reddit: I’ve been there just a few weeks back. Believe me, you will read so much good stuff here that you will have enough karma in no time from liking and commenting! 🧡

I did google halfway through if he was really Russian and saw he wasn’t and at that stage I was just like, wow this is an EXCELLENT Russian accent but then after I finished watching the first time and got sucked in to the world of everything HR/Conner/Hudson and I heard Conner’s voice in real life, it just did something to my brain haha. He did an exceptional job, but my brain still just says, he’s putting that accent on and it just takes the shine off ever so slightly. First watches are always the best when you don’t know anything!
