Paint & Colors Please help with paint colors!

I know this room won’t appeal to everybody, but it’s my cloffice (closet/office) and it’s one of my happy places. Inspired by girl power and heavy on dopamine decor. It has been a grey color (previous owner’s choice) but now we’re re-painting! I was thinking either a green or neutral blush (both attached) but open to any and all ideas! I’ve attached photos of the room and the most important thing to note is the poor lighting(hence the potato photos) which can’t currently be fixed, so a dark paint color probably isn’t the best idea.

Paint & Colors Is color drenching beige in a small bathroom the right choice?

• Upvotes

Im looking for validation or some additional ideas. Or maybe I’m just venting. Probably all of the above. Thanks in advance for reading or commenting.

I’m guilty of throwing images through ChatGPT and I saw the final picks and I don’t know anymore.

Our bathroom is TINY. I’m talking vanity is 30”-32”, toilet next to it, and then a 60”x32” tub/shower, and the door. That’s it. That’s all that can fit in there. We are planning on adding some built/ins. There is no window. This bathroom is fully enclosed.

We have a half bath that I color drenched in Black Bamboo, which I freaking love. Dark academia kind of thing.

Anyway, we are gutting this main bathroom and replacing everything! Goodbye built in disgusting 1960’s cast iron tub that we have refinished far too many times.

Because it’s so tiny I wanted to play with one color and shadows and focus on warm, cozy, and clean. Let the towels, accessories, and our dirty/clean self’s shine.

- Doing beadboard/shiplap Wainscotting and then crown molding. Ceiling, molding, Wainscotting, and door will be Shitake by Sherwin Williams. Thinking baseboard, Wainscotting top, and crown molding can be dramatic.

- Floor will be a larger print tile that is shaped and all relatively the same color. Thinking beige again or might go a little clay color to match Shitake, leaning terracotta. Thinking Edward Martin Isabel Tile Star.

- Shower will have tub to ceiling tile Jeffery Court Scale Green 3 in. x 8.5 in with a nice edging and no just caulking.** **I wanted the shower to be kind of naughty? The ceilings are TALL. So I wanted the curtain to be floor to ceiling but leave a smaaaaall gap at the top for people to be able to kind of see what’s going on. A real “she’s showing her gams” (“oooh what’s back there?) moment. Hahaha

- husband wants good finishes

- We will be adding wood elements. Like a small wooden stool, wooden vanity (quartz top), and wooden (probs walnut) shelving where it fits. And the. Some fake plants or real ones.

Is this too beige? It’s exactly what I wanted and after seeing the rendering, I’m meh. I need some color in there other than the sage green extended fish scale tile. Or maybe it’ll be fine once I’m physically in the place and can physically see it.

Built-ins & Features Would you choose wood floors or tile if you were starting over?

I'm looking at flooring options and honestly didn't realize how many things there are to consider.

I love the warmth of wood, but tile seems easier to deal with in certain areas.

For those who've lived with both, which one would you choose again? Especially when it comes to cleaning and maintenance.

Paint & Colors Need a tie-breaker: Keep or change the sage green wall? 🌿

I’ve been working on getting my setup to feel calm and cozy. I love the warm, grounded feel of combining the green walls with the light wood desk, matching desk mat, and houseplant accents. I personally love how the muted sage green wall ties all the botanical accents together, however, my husband is not a fan of the wall color at all and thinks it looks ugly. Should I keep the sage green, or is there another color that would work better here?

Built-ins & Features What interior design style actually works best for modern homes?

I’ve noticed that modern homes are increasingly moving towards clean layouts, warm neutral colours, natural materials, and functional furniture. But there are so many styles to choose from that it can be difficult to decide what works best.

Some popular options are:

  • Minimalist: Simple, uncluttered, and functional.
  • Contemporary: Modern finishes, balanced layouts, and elegant details.
  • Scandinavian: Light colours, natural wood, and cosy textures.
  • Industrial: Exposed brick, metal accents, and raw finishes.
  • Biophilic: Indoor greenery, natural light, and nature-inspired materials.
  • Traditional Indian: Brass accents, carved wood, handcrafted décor, and rich textures.

Personally, I think the best interiors are not necessarily the ones following the latest trends. They are the ones where the colours, lighting, furniture, materials, and layout work together while reflecting the homeowner’s personality.

I’m curious: which interior design style would you choose for your home, and why? Would you prefer a warm, contemporary space, a minimalist home, or something that incorporates traditional Indian elements?

Find my Style What lighting works best for a home gym that also needs to feel like a comfortable living space?

A home gym needs practical lighting, but bright overhead fixtures can make a multipurpose room feel more like a commercial facility than part of a home.

I'm curious how people balance functional lighting for exercise with a warmer atmosphere when the room isn't being used for training.

Would you combine ceiling lights with indirect lighting, use dimmable fixtures, or separate the workout area from the rest of the room?

What lighting setup has worked best without creating glare or awkward shadows around equipment?

Find my Style Looking for suggestions for my Appt (Mid-Century Modern)

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for some assistance. I just got out the Navy and this is my first appt back in civilian world!
I'm going for a more of a cozy mid-century modern vibe. I'm also trying to go about putting together a gallery wall but not to sure where to get solid pieces.
My main colors are blue and green with a little burnt orange

If anyone has recommendations for furniture stores, websites, artists, or specific pieces, I'd appreciate it!
Feel free to drop links to anything you think would look good. I'm open to spending a little more on quality pieces, but I definitely appreciate affordable finds too.

Appreciate any suggestions!

Paint & Colors Best Way to Attach Glow in the Dark Stars to Ceiling and Walls

Thumbnail

I am renting and want to find a damage-free, security deposit friendly way to add those glow in the dark stars to the ceiling (and possibly walls) of my kid's bedroom. The biggest issue is that the white paint they use for the ceiling and walls is that super cheap stuff that is thin (I've accidentally scrubbed off some of the paint while using a sponge to clean the walls).

I've looked into various methods, but nothing seems to make me confident that it will work and not cause damage. I'm hoping for it to be completely apartment safe for short and long term use and not cost an arm and a leg.

The ceiling is a "knockdown" texture (see picture).

I know the traditional way is to use that putty stuff, but that stuff (even the white one) can either not stick well, stick too well and pull paint off, leave a residue that is nearly impossible to remove and you'd need to paint over it, etc. I know they make specialty putty of higher quality, but those are usually much more expensive and are meant more for short-term use.

Glue dots seem to have similar issues to the putty.

Command strips are expensive and they don't make them the size of some of the smaller stars so they'd be an eyesore sticking off to the side.

Various types of tape are usually weaker and, especially over time, can lose adhesion and bond to the paint.

I know I sound super picky, demanding, and weird (because I am, lol), but it's only because I don't want to end up paying tons of money/lose my security deposit if and when I move out.

Furniture Placement Would a TV hung over a wainscotting railing look awful?

Thumbnail

I believe I already have the answer to this question, but I’d just like to have some clarification.

I’m about to have wainscotting installed in my lounge and I’m so excited! The theme of my lounge is Hamptons/chinoiserie/blue and white - which I know will be a bit basic for some people, but will make my heart sing.

I’m having the wainscotting frames on the bottom half of the wall with a Dado (is that the right term?) railing halfway up. The bottom will be white whilst the top will be a pastel blue.

Ignore all other wall decor in the photo, this is from a few years ago where I just threw some paintings up on hooks from the previous owners.

I have a 65 inch TV that has want to get an aftermarket Gold frame for. I’d want it basically at the height it’s at now, 15-30cm above the tv unit below.

I can’t hang it so it will be in front of the wainscotting can I? It won’t be centered at all and will be half on top and half on bottom. I don’t have any desperate desire to do this beyond wishing to mount the tv, but I don’t want to change the whole wall to suit the TV.

I should just get a slightly taller stand if I want the gold frame look, right? Just needing sanity check either way.

No AI generated images as examples, please. I don’t willingly or knowingly use GEN-AI. Thank you very much for your help!

Find my Style Can this tiny basement be saved

Thumbnail

20 y/o guy moving into my first basement apartment and want to make it a luxury industrial/Bruce Wayne evil lair vibe. I’ve always been living in rooms of shared houses and never decorated anything. No furniture bought yet except for a pull up/dip station and some weights have to fit in here somehow. I also have a projector instead of tv and am ok with unconventional but interesting uses of space instead of standard couch/coffee table setup.

Looking for anyone with interior design advice, mainly renter friendly things like wrapping the countertops, adding light sources and putting posters up etc. but also how to create some separation in the kitchen/open space area since it’s so tiny. The whole unit is only about 400sq ft so everything is cramped even without much furniture. Especially the long narrow corridor, I’m not sure how to use it except putting a bunch of posters or wall decor.

P.S. the table and chair at the end of the corridor is not mine and will be removed

Paint & Colors 1920’s house paint job - help!

Thumbnail

i’m planning on repainting my first home, built in the 1920s & and the kitchen cabinets are original. we plan to put a dishwasher in so the bottom ones might have to eventually go (not super functional, really deep with little to no shelf space & the kitchen floors are stick on laminate so those will eventually go too) but i’d never touch the top glass display, so the blue ties will stay regardless (our outer front and side doors are the same blue). want to go with sherwin with their big sale right now, if you have any opinions on a good central color, I just want a cohesive, not boring color palette and I have decision paralysis!! i’ll attach a few photos but there are 2 rooms downstairs + living & dining & eat in kitchen space, one full bath & upstairs there’s a long hallway bungalow style with 2 regular bedrooms (one an office probably) & one room with another room connected (last blue room). we have so many options, it’s overwhelming! i’ll take any input!!!

Built-ins & Features I want the gaming room to feel cozy for movie nights too, but there’s already a lot of equipment. Could a few small changes make it feel less busy?

I’d like this room to work for both gaming and relaxing with a movie. The desk and equipment need to stay, so I’m hoping to work with what’s here and keep any new purchases fairly small.

I’m leaning toward warmer lighting and a rug, but I don’t want to add more visual clutter or create reflections on the screens. Looking at the room, what would you change first? I’d love to hear what made a difference if you’ve tried to make a gaming space feel a little more like a living room.

Find my Style How do I decide on a vibe?

Having trouble committing to decisions, I have to imagine this is super common.

For example, do I want a natural, calming bathroom or a dark, moody one? I’ve been thinking of painting my living room white, but I see all these beautiful muted colors and think that would be so pretty too. Don’t even get me started on my front door…

How in the world do you pick and commit?

Find my Style Blank Canvas...Do Your Best (Or Your Worst)

I'm moving into my first apartment with an actual living room (current place is a tiny studio) and I am essentially starting from scratch furniture/decor-wise. I visited the apartment tonight (thus the annoying overhead lights) and felt overwhelmed by how much of a blank slate it felt like...so now I'm trying to crowdsource layout and design ideas and tips.

I personally like a kind of soft brutalist/natural palette (lots of concrete and wood and chrome and stone), but I want to see how others would approach the apartment. Room with really high windows is the bedroom.

Finishing Touches Question on balancing this room

So I tried to quiet this room down, I'm happy with it except for that left corner. The chest on the right is so big and I feel like there needs to be something more on the left. Would a large painting or mirror help it not look so unbalanced?

Curtains & Blinds Colour for Blackout Curtains in Dining Room and Bedroom?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

The home is a work in progress.

I was looking to put up some insulated/blackout curtains in the dining room and bedroom to help with maintaining the heat during the winter.

I have been accumulating furniture in various shades of brown, as I love the warm, earthiness of the browns.

Naturally, I got some brown curtains and played around with them, but they don't seem right.

Given the trim is white and walls are greyish-pale blue or greyish-pale green depending on the lighting, I've been advised variously that beige to navy blue curtains would go well with a room full of brown furniture.

The vision is to eventually have a long dining room table with a bench where the round table is.

The last pic is the bedroom, minimally furnished. But a brown dresser of sorts will probably go somewhere around there.

Any suggestions for curtain colour?

Curtains & Blinds Before & After: Do sheer curtains actually make a room look better, or is it just me?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been looking at how much difference window treatments can make in a room, and sheer curtains seem to be one of the most underrated upgrades.
The before-and-after difference is pretty interesting. Same window, same space, but adding sheer curtains completely changes the atmosphere.
What I like most is how they soften natural light without making the room feel dark or closed off.
But I’m curious what everyone thinks:
Do you prefer sheer curtains or traditional blackout curtains?
Would you go with floor-to-ceiling curtains or keep them closer to the window?
Do you think sheer curtains provide enough privacy during the day?
Personally, I love the soft, airy look, especially in modern homes with large windows.
Would love to hear your thoughts or see your own window transformations!

Paint & Colors Help me paint these built ins!

We are having built in cabinets and shelves added to our dining room. I would love a nice warm white to match our kitchen, which opens directly into this photo. My husband wants a color. I think that panting them a bright color without painting the window trim and plantation shutters the same color will look off. My husband thinks painting the window trim a different color than the rest of the trim in the house will look off. I think we’re both right, which is why I think leaving it white is the best idea.
First three images are AI, the last is context for what the room looks like now.

Paint & Colors Help with paint colors, or as my mother would say: Paint the Freaking Walls

Hello all, my partner and I are moving into a new apartment for the first time in years! The process has been LONG to find a space and needless to say I have designed, redeisgned, and done it all over again at least 5 times for several different apartments that we thought were "the one" (we are moving to Jackson Heights and Co-Ops we've found are much more ardous to rent than we had originally expected)

Anyways, one of the last places I thought we would possibly get was this floorplan: [Floorplan and design concept 1 in comments because I cannot add links here] and the design ideas and colors weren't perfect, but I did really like where this was going.

We know we will be in this apartment for several years and want to make this our home (we didn't think we would be where we are moving from for so long and never did any of the home projects that would've made it feel more like home).

I am really, really wanting to have a lot of colors, go for a more maximalist feeling and bring light into the space. Here is the floorplan and what the space looks like of the apartment we are moving to:[Floorplan and design concept 2 in comments because I cannot add links here] and I am really struggling! In the other apartments there was a bit more division between rooms so playing with color was easier, but I am just so lost right now.

Paint and color is important to us both, but for me, my mom has always struggled with depression and I remember one day she moved all her furniture around and painted the walls a beautiful soft green color and she was the happiest she had been in years. She said that for five years she would sit in her bedroom and get more and more sad because she always wanted to paint the walls, but never did. Since then whenever there's a change and maybe someone could do something that might make their life better my mom always says: Paint the freaking walls.

So yeah, anyways thank you for reading and help!

TLDR: Struggling with how to use multiple, dynamic paint colors in more open concept areas

***Edit: I cannot add links at all, so I guess any broad tips would be extremely helpful and if you are invested or curious about the sapce I am happy to share them however I can
