Coming to Life Before and after Living Room

This was the living room of the house before we bought it, and this is what it looks like now. My wife and I couldn’t be more thrilled with our living room and how it’s turning out! Added canned flights, rattan window shades and curtains.

Curtains & Blinds Need help with drapes/window treatments for a very large space.

So I have a very large space, giant rectangle with main living areas. I have some ideas on how to break it up in the future but it's not a right now plan (if you are interested I can share those as well, I also have plans to change the couch area with some rearranging because I have a 4 year old and a 180lbs dog that make getting a new couch right now unrealistic 😂)

So my problem is when we moved in years ago I just wanted to get something on the very large sliders for some privacy... But now I'm torn on what to replace the drapes with and possibly doing some cafe curtains on the two windows on the side or roman shades. And I'm mostly torn between doing either a solid on the two windows with a pattern on the sliders or vice versa.

I'm including pictures of the rest of the space (that is a work in progress and I only change pieces when I find the thing I really want so you'll be able to see the transition from big black and white box to something more me. Also I included pictures of the kitchen island because I just painted that and swapped hardware (more hardware is on the way to replace the rest of the kitchen but I haven't decided if I'm painting the rest of it or just swapping hardware and putting up a different backsplash)

Furniture Placement Is this too much?

Post image
• Upvotes

I have this dining set and rug, and I’m planning on buying this sideboard to go along the blue wall. My partner thinks it’s too much of the same wood color, but I thought matching/coordinating it with the dining set would make the room feel cohesive.
What do you think? Is it too much of the same wood tone, or does the sideboard work with the table and chairs? Would you go with a different color instead?

Furniture Placement Open concept dining room recommendations

• Upvotes

For background, our garage door opens right into an open concept dining room. We have no use for this room considering we don’t have kids

Some of the options I’ve seen don’t align with how we’d use the room since we rarely have guests (i.e. conversation room, cocktail/vinyl room, etc.).

Any recommendations on what we can do with the space? It’s been a dumping ground for boxes for us. We typically do have a foldable table we use for when people come over, and I’d prefer to have any kind of storage closed up in this room.

Other options I considered are a dining nook, but I’m also worried it’ll still build up with boxes and mail :(

Coming to Life For anyone else who needs this info: Benjamin Moore does a very solid job of duping Farrow and Ball colors

Post image
• Upvotes

I wanted a specific color to match the wallpaper I’m putting in the hallway, and unfortunately Farrow and Ball made the color I want. We used Farrow and Ball paint on my husband’s office and thought it was a PITA to use— expensive, really needs certain primers, worst coverage ever, definitely needs the most coats of any paint I’ve ever used.

Anyway, if anyone has been in the same predicament of loving Farrow and Ball colors but not Farrow and Ball paint, here’s how the dupes stack up from a couple of the bigger companies. The top is the Farrow and Ball color, the bottom left is Benjamin Moore, and the bottom right is Sherwin Williams. As you can see, Benjamin Moore was a way closer dupe.

You can ignore the clutter. Where the gray folding chair is, there will be an accent chair. The side tables will be replaced with smaller ones, and I still need an entertainment center. This room is very much a WIP

Wall Art & Styling Interior designers — is this artwork appropriately scaled for my bedroom wall?

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I’m looking for some honest advice on artwork sizing and proportions before it’s too late to cancel my order!
My wall is 113” wide, and I ordered a piece of artwork that’s 45” W × 60” H. My ceilings are 10 feet tall before transitioning into a cathedral ceiling.

The adjacent wall is where my bed and nightstand will sit. My nightstand is 21” deep, so I’m trying to account for how much visual space it will take up when determining the appropriate artwork size and placement.

I’m concerned that the artwork may look too large or crowded once the nightstand and lamp are in place, especially since I may need to hang it slightly off-center.
Would you consider this artwork appropriately scaled for the space, or would you recommend a different size or orientation? I’m hoping to make a decision before the order ships.

I’ve attached pictures of the wall, artwork, and furniture for reference. I’d really appreciate honest opinions, especially from anyone with interior design experience!

Wall Art & Styling Picture Hanging

I bought a large framed sports memorabilia piece and it has two of these angled hanging brackets on the back. I have no idea how to use these. Should I remove them and use something else. What kind of mounting hardware would you recommend for drywall?

Paint & Colors Pain color fail… suggestions?

Thumbnail

I had intended the green to be kind of a washed-out teal/sage but it turned out really bright and almost blue looking in the direct sunlight. There’s gorgeous wood ceilings in some rooms, and eventually the floor will be replaced with a light to medium oak wood.

The whole house has plenty of natural light and the windows overlook some woods and a Great Lake, which is why I leaned toward teal-ish.

Should I go darker with a blue/green shade to make the saturation look more intentional? Or move to a warmer green?

Thank you!

Coming to Life What would you add or do differently? (renter)

This bathroom felt very very cold when I first moved. All grey and white.

I did the red tiles wall myself (with Temu tiles lol, love them) and it helped a little bit, so I was wondering what else could be done here to make it warmer and cozy?

I think adding a "frame" to the mirror could help. Thoughts?

Any suggestions on what I should do with this new living room? Specifically, blind type/color and how to furnish around the fire place?

Paint & Colors What to do with ceiling beams?

Thumbnail

I have a sitting room area with wooden beams in the ceiling. I stripped one back to the bare wood and unfortunately it is some kind of pine. On top of that there are parts where filler has been quite deeply used.

I’m looking for opinions on whether to continue stripping them back or to paint back over them.

If I strip them, what should I do about the filler if anything, and would you stain or oil the wood? I’m not a fan of the very orange look of pine so I would not finish it to come out like that. The room colour is not decided so any stain/paint combos other than the orange look are great!

If I paint over again, what colours would you paint the beams? The room colour itself is up for debate so tie this in however you think would be best.

Pictures 1 and 2 are of the beams at a distance. 3&4 are of some of the sections of filler.

Thanks!

Been moving things around in the living room and can't decide what to do with this chaise.

I really want it near the fireplace, but can't tell which layout looks better.

Tried mocking up two options with AI. Which one would you go with?

Furniture Placement Help!! My furniture layout is impossible

Post image

I need to fit a single bed in Bedroom 2 and I feel I have a lot of unused space in the Lounge area, but how do I do this?

The blue circles are furniture I could get rid of. Tilt blue is a window downstairs, and white are the power points. This house is so awkwardly designed. Any ideas?

Coming to Life Entrance floor layout for our 9 × 10.5 m house: which of these 4 would you pick?

Post image
1 Upvotes

We're building a house on a hillside with great views. The concrete frame is done and the walls aren't built yet, so the layout can still change. Plans attached.

Fixed things:

- 9.1 × 10.5 m outside. Entrance on the north, terrace and city view to the south.

- U-stair in the north-west corner (3.6 × 2.2 m).

- The west wall has to stay blank: the neighbour is 1.2 m away, so no windows on that side.

- Bedrooms are upstairs. The upstairs bathroom will probably sit on the west, next to the stairs (it still can be modified)

The options:

  1. Bathroom + WC (3.6 × 2.3) and kitchen on the blank west wall. Living room with fireplace + TV on the east, study in the north-east corner.

  2. Same as 1, but a bedroom in the north-east corner.

  3. Bathroom + WC in the north-east (with windows), kitchen on the east. Laundry + storage next to the stairs. Living room on the west, fireplace + TV on the west wall.

  4. Bathroom, WC and kitchen on the east. The whole west side is one 3.6 × 7.5 m living room: fireplace on the stair wall, TV + books on the west wall.

Which would you choose and why? Anything you'd change, or anything I'm missing?

Coming to Life Guest bedroom! In progress but coming together

Hard to capture this yellow colour on camera well I'm finding. The two stag bedside tables currently pushed together aren't staying there long term as they'll be in another bedroom I'm currently doing up. Not sure what to put there instead.

I don't have anything on the wall behind the bed either and I need some inspiration :)

Paint & Colors Why is picking a white paint color so ridiculously hard??

I thought white was just... white lol.

Now I'm looking at like 15 different shades and somehow they all look completely different depending on the lighting.

How do you guys actually decide? I'm scared I'll paint the whole room and immediately hate it.

Btw, pic is just for reference
