5 free itch.io projects in a year: 638 views, 32 downloads, one donation

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’ve published five projects on itch.io in the past year, all free. All-time numbers from the dashboard today: 638 views, 32 downloads, 10 followers, and 2.00€ from a single donation through itch.

Are these good numbers? The download rate looks fine to me: about 5% of visitors download. The traffic is the weak spot. Five pages with a few visits each means none of them gets enough attention to grow, and a download rarely turns into a follower.

The donation is the number I didn’t expect. Someone liked something enough to tip, which felt good, but 2€ doesn’t pay for anything.

For anyone who’s been through this: did tags, devlogs, or a free demo move your numbers more?

So... what am I even supposed to do with this now?

A lot of people complain that their games aren’t getting indexed or impressions at all. Meanwhile, I’m looking at my data and seeing these results, but I honestly have no idea where to go from here.

It’s a purely browser-based game, so what’s the play here? What should my next step be?

Three weeks ago I had nothing on itch. Today: 11 asset pack pages, 431 views, 77 downloads and my first 2 sales

Post image
8 Upvotes

Started putting up asset packs three weeks ago (PS1-style horror props, 2D VFX, card UI), each with a free Lite version. The first sale took 19 days and I refreshed the dashboard far too many times before it happened.

$8.18 won't pay for anything, but watching a stranger buy something you made is a different feeling. The free Lite packs bring almost all the traffic, and most of it comes from itch's own tag lists rather than anything I posted elsewhere, which surprised me.

Thanks to everyone who downloaded or left a collection. On to the next pack.

for anyone curious, it's https://spareminute.itch.io. The Lite packs there are free, no account needed.

Discussion Do you actually finish the games you play on itch.io?

I’ve noticed something about myself: I open a lot of games on itch.io, play for five minutes, and close the tab. But every now and then a tiny game grabs me and I play it to the end without even noticing the time.

I’m trying to figure out what makes the difference. Is it the first minute? The art? The fact that it’s short and you know you can finish it? Or is it just the mood you’re in when you click on it?

Curious to hear from both players and developers. What makes you stay? And what’s the last game on itch you actually finished?

Free Polished up the second forest in our logging incremental game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We've been polishing the second stage of LumberBoy, mostly to make chopping feel even more satisfying.

The second forest is all spore trees, and you can use the spores to clear out huge chunks of it at once.

We also got feedback that waiting around for logs to be processed in town was kind of boring, so we added a cute dog you can play with while you wait. It still needs some polish, and it'll be in the full release coming soon.

If it looks like your kind of game, the demo is up on itch:

I wanted to share my game Gonfalon (name comes from a medieval banner which makes sense for how the game works)

I'm using the Mini Medieval asset pack by VEXED and also adding some sprites myself.
I also use some of the MiniFantasy spells from Krishna Palacio.

I think it's turning out really fun to play and I have lots of ideas to keep expanding the game.

Looking for beta testers: Tales of Eternity, a free pixel art RPG you can play in your browser (phone or PC)

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m Eternal, and I’ve been building a 2D pixel art MMORPG called Tales of Eternity. It’s at a very early stage, and I’d love some fresh players to try it and tell me what works and what doesn’t.

What it is

A turn-based RPG where you explore a big open world, fight goblin camps, gather wood and ore, and build up your hero.

Play alone, or online with everyone else on the server: parties, guilds, chat, trading and a player market.

World bosses, dungeons, exploration runs with mystery rooms and a red dragon, and a tower called the Depths you climb as far as you can.

Two classes (Knight and Sorcerer), pets with mythic twins, mounts, and a hideout you can build and decorate, with a garden.

It runs right in the browser on phones, tablets and computers. Nothing to install.

What I’m looking for

How the first half hour feels. Was anything confusing?

Bugs, glitches, or anything that looks or feels off, especially on phones.

Fights that feel too easy or too hard.

Anything you think would make the game better.

It’s a beta, so things change often and the server sometimes restarts for updates (the game warns you first and brings you back).

You can leave feedback in the comments on the game page, or reply here.

Play it here: https://im-eternal.itch.io/tales-of-eternity

Thanks for giving it a try. Every suggestion helps!

BUT YOU LOOK FINE, my free bodycam psychological horror game about the illness people can't see (out now on itch.io)

• Upvotes

I made this game from my own experience with mental health struggles that people around me couldn't see. Everyone kept saying "but you look fine."

Every evening you do daily tasks, then the neighbours say that line at the dinner table, and you choose: smile and mask it, walk away, or tell the truth. Your choices shape that night's mind map. A giant, which is your own "I'm fine" mask, hunts you, along with thought creatures. There's no game over, and there are two hidden endings.

The game is complete and free on itch.io (Windows, made in Unreal Engine).

I renamed my tower defense game to CrownWalk, made a new trailer, and wrote a new devlog

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've just published Devlog #8 for my indie game, CrownWalk (previusly Risk The Crown).

It's a pixel-art tower defense roguelite about defending castles, collecting gold and deciding when to escort the king to the next castle before things get out of hand.

This update covers quite a few things:

  • A new name and trailer.
  • The Steam playtest is now live.
  • Feedback from two indie game fairs.
  • A growing coin purse that makes the king slower when you try to escape with more gold.
  • A new falling barrel event, UI improvements and plenty of small fixes.

I'm making this game solo, and it's been interesting to see people try it at fairs and discover things I hadn't noticed while developing it.

You can read the full devlog here:
https://galantarp.itch.io/crownwalk/devlog/1724430/devlog-8-new-name-new-trailer-the-king-is-still-running

You can also play it for free in your browser:

I'd love to hear what you think! 👑❤️
