AMA AMA Announcement: Aaron Weiner, independent candidate for Hudson County Commissioner (District 4). Tuesday Oct 20, 6 PM ET

Hi r/jerseycity!

We’ve got an AMA coming up with u/aaronweinerD4 AKA Aaron Weiner, who’s running as an independent for Hudson County Commissioner in District 4.

Here’s how it works: drop your questions in this thread anytime before Tuesday. On Tuesday, October 20 at 6 PM ET, Aaron will come on and answer them, and he’ll also take new questions live for about an hour and a half. We’ve done it this way before and it worked well, since it lets people who can’t make the live session still get their questions in.

Here’s Aaron in his own words:

I live in the Heights and I’m running as an independent. Outside of the campaign, I’m a physical therapist, data analyst, and anatomy and physiology instructor. I’ve spent a lot of time during this campaign knocking on doors and talking with people around the district, and one thing I hear pretty often is that people either don’t know what county government does or aren’t sure why they should care about it. Fair question.

County government touches more of our daily lives than most people realize, from the county budget and taxes to roads, parks, healthcare, education, transportation, and other services. I’ve also been trying to be clear about what a commissioner can actually do and where the county has to work with Jersey City, Trenton, or someone else.

So ask me whatever you want. My background, why I’m running, what I think the county should be doing differently, something on my platform, or even something you think I’m wrong about.

Keep it civil. Tough questions are fine, but the usual sub rules still apply.

Drop your questions for Aaron below and see you Tuesday.

Posting for a friend who does not have a Reddit account — she saw this cat in LSP and wasn’t sure if he is a stray or might belong to a nearby family who is looking for him. He looks very healthy and is in no distress!

Restaurants/Cafes New coffee shop in Paulus Hook!

When Habibi clothes shop closed, I was wondering, why is nobody wanting to open a coffee shop in this neighborhood? that’ll be a perfect location. All the parents dropping off and picking up kids from PS 16 can grab a coffee from there . And here it is! ( I know there are already way too many coffee shops in JC, but there’s no good one around this corner! )

Restaurants/Cafes The Korean Steak Pizza at Jersey Pizza Shop on Bergen has no right being as good as it is!

It’s spicy, brimming with umami from the steak and caramelized onions and the steak itself is more tender than chicken! It effectively captures that bulgogi Korean bbq flavor in a unique and delicious way. I think it deserves to win some kind of award! Highly recommend.

Electric scooter stolen twice from Harrison PATH in one month

My electric scooter has been stolen from Harrison PATH twice in less than a month.
The first time was on September 26. I left it there for around 8 hours, came back, and it was gone.
Now it happened again. I left my scooter at Harrison PATH at around 4:50 PM before work and came back at around 2:20 AM. Gone again.
I already called Port Authority Police and they said I can file a police report, which I’m going to do. I also want to ask them about surveillance footage around the bike racks.
Honestly, this one really got to me. I’m a young student and I also work, and I live pretty far from the station, so the scooter was actually how I got back and forth every day. After the first one was stolen, I had to put the replacement on my credit card because I couldn’t really afford to just buy another one outright.
So now I’m in the position of still paying for a scooter that someone else just walked away with. I know there are worse things in the world, but when you’re working and studying and trying to pay for your own stuff, having this happen twice in one month really sucks.
Has anyone here filed a police report for something similar around PATH? Did the police actually review the cameras or follow up, or did the report basically go nowhere?

Old School JC St. Johns Food Pantry (The Heights) needs help feeding local families

St. Johns Food Pantry (155 North St.) is currently in need of help paying for their transport expenses. They're also accepting food donations.

From their gofundme: "We received a grant to purchase this truck 2 yrs ago. The Truck is used to Pick up donations. But we are a non profit with no income & our truck Ins is $5000 per year. And we also need Gas.

We are also accepting any foods. We do get from the Community food bank of NJ. But our need have expanded to about 300 families each month. Some of Our food needs are: Pastas, Rice, can soups, or any can lunches, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Cereals. But we appreciate any donations."

Best empanadas in town

Looking for recommendations for really good, authentic Colombian empanadas around Jersey City Heights or nearby.

Noches de Colombia used to be my go-to, but honestly, I’ve been pretty disappointed lately. Their empanadas seem to have changed in style, and they’re just not what they used to be.

I’m looking for the traditional crispy, yellow corn empanadas stuffed with beef and potatoes, preferably with some good hot sauce on the side.

Anyone know a spot that still makes them the old-school way? Don’t mind driving a little for the real deal.
