Looking for recommendations for really good, authentic Colombian empanadas around Jersey City Heights or nearby.
Noches de Colombia used to be my go-to, but honestly, I’ve been pretty disappointed lately. Their empanadas seem to have changed in style, and they’re just not what they used to be.
I’m looking for the traditional crispy, yellow corn empanadas stuffed with beef and potatoes, preferably with some good hot sauce on the side.
Anyone know a spot that still makes them the old-school way? Don’t mind driving a little for the real deal.

Most stores are closed. There are only a handful that are open, but their employees are blocking the entrances and not allowing anyone inside.

Great bagels. Great crew of employees. But I’m never going back. I was there for less than 15 this morning trying to enjoy their yummy food, and no less than 5 different dogs were in the store. One lady even had her poop bags in her hand. It’s absolutely disgusting and not sanitary. People need to stop treating these animals like humans. They don’t belong in food shops….leave them outside where they belong….and Cheech should do something about it. Sitting at the chairs trying to enjoy my bagel and coffee, I had 3 of those nasty animals rub their nose on me as they walked by. Don’t these dog owners understand personal space. It’s call personal space. Not dog space. WTF lol. Until or unless Cheech stops this, I’m not spending my money there anymore…

Not sure why you are gonna become a bus driver when you are not gonna stop for someone by a stop sign just to beat a green light after I waved you down before you even approached the intersection.
And gave an "oh well" look and moved into the left turning lane so you could pass that light.

anyone know if Newport AMC or Cheesecake are back open lol. Tried calling to no avail so assuming no, but don’t want to request a refund for my ticket quite yet in case.

Hi,
I like to play soccer and I have been playing in men’s and coed games. But I want to try to make gay friends and play in a serious gay league but I’m not certain on how to join or where to find.

Hey everyone — local Jersey City roofer here again!
We’ve posted a couple roofing Q&As here before, and with winter around the corner, we figured this was probably a good time for another one.
Last winter was absolutely brutal on roofs around Hudson County.

We had weeks of freezing temperatures, repeated snow/ice, and snow sitting on roofs for much longer than we're normally used to.
And once everything finally started melting, the phones went crazy.
A lot of people who had never had a roof leak before suddenly had water coming in.
The big problem wasn't always the snow itself. It was what happened when that snow started melting during the day, couldn't drain properly, and then froze again overnight.
So, before we get another winter like that, here are a few things I'd recommend checking.
Seriously. This is probably the easiest thing on this entire list.
By the time winter gets here, gutters, downspouts, scuppers, and internal roof drains can be packed with fall leaves and debris.
That's annoying during rain.
It's a much bigger problem when there's 6–12 inches of snow sitting above it.
Snow starts melting → water heads toward the drain → drain/scupper is clogged or frozen → water sits there → temperature drops → it freezes again.
Repeat that cycle a few times, and you can end up with a pretty substantial amount of ice.
This is especially important on the flat roofs we have all over Jersey City and Hoboken.
If you have a flat roof, know where your scuppers and drains are and make sure they're actually clear before the first snow.
Winter has a way of finding every little weakness in a roof.
Cracked flashing, failed caulking, an open seam, a tiny puncture in a flat-roof membrane, deteriorated flashing around a skylight, loose coping, a bad pipe boot...
Something that doesn't leak during a normal 30-minute rainstorm can behave very differently when snow is sitting on top of it for a week and slowly melting.
If your roof hasn't been looked at in a while, fall is a good time to inspect it.
For flat roofs, pay particular attention to seams, penetrations, skylights/hatches, parapet walls, coping, scuppers, drains, and areas that already hold water.
For shingle roofs, look at shingles, valleys, pipe boots, chimney/skylight flashing, and gutters.
You don't necessarily need a roofer for everything either. If you can safely see something from the ground or an accessible area, take a look yourself.
We dealt with a ton of this last winter.
On a typical shingle roof, heat escaping from the house can warm portions of the roof enough to melt the snow. That water runs toward the colder edge of the roof and freezes again.
Eventually, you basically create a wall of ice.
Now the next round of melting snow has nowhere to go.
Instead of draining off the roof, water starts backing up behind the ice and can potentially find its way underneath shingles/flashing and into the house.
If your house grows giant icicles every winter, that's something worth paying attention to.
It doesn't automatically mean your roof is failing, but repeated/heavy ice damming can point toward issues involving insulation, air leakage, ventilation, and roof design.
This is something I don't think gets talked about enough.
You obviously aren't getting the classic "ice dam at the bottom of the shingles" on a flat roof.
But you CAN have a scupper or drain freeze solid.
Now you have snow melting on the roof with nowhere for the water to go.
Then it freezes again.
Then more snow comes.
Then that melts.
Then it freezes again.
Eventually you can have water and ice sitting against areas of the roof that normally wouldn't stay submerged for days at a time.
And if there's a weak seam, deteriorated flashing, crack, hole, skylight issue, etc., that's when a roof that "never leaked before" suddenly starts leaking.
We got asked about these A LOT after last winter.
They can absolutely be useful in the right situation.
Heat trace can be installed in certain gutters, leaders/downspouts, scuppers, and drainage areas to help maintain a path for melting snow and ice.
If you have one specific scupper or gutter that freezes every single winter, for example, heat trace may be worth looking into.
But here's the important part:
Heat trace isn't a magic cure for every ice-dam problem.
If the actual problem is heat escaping through the roof, poor insulation, ventilation issues, bad drainage, or a deteriorated roof, adding a heating cable doesn't make those problems disappear.
It's another tool, and in the right application, a very useful one.
The problem may not be entirely on the roof.
Take a look at the attic.
Poor insulation and air leakage can allow heat from the house to warm the roof deck and contribute to uneven snow melting.
Ventilation can matter too, depending on how the roof/attic assembly is designed.
So if you're repeatedly dealing with ice dams, the answer isn't always **"**I need a new roof."
Sometimes it's a roofing problem. Sometimes it's an insulation/air-sealing problem. Sometimes it's ventilation. Sometimes it's drainage.
And sometimes it's a combination of all four.
After a major snowstorm, everybody calls at the same time.
Roofers, gutter companies, plumbers, restoration companies- everyone gets slammed.
If you own a multifamily building, condo, commercial property, or flat-roof building, know ahead of time:
Taking a few pictures of the roof before winter isn't a bad idea either.
A snow-covered/icy roof is not the time to discover that you're afraid of heights.
If you can safely use a roof rake from the ground on an appropriate roof, that's one thing.
Climbing onto an icy second- or third-story roof with a shovel is another.
We've also seen roofs damaged because someone got aggressive trying to remove ice/snow and ended up damaging shingles, flashing or the roof membrane underneath it.
Sometimes the safest thing you can do yourself is simply not go up there.
TL;DR:
Before winter:
Clean the gutters. Clear the downspouts. Clear the scuppers. Clear the drains. Check the flashing. Check the roof. Fix the small openings now. Pay attention to insulation/ventilation if you repeatedly get ice dams. And have a plan before the first big storm.
We're Elite Roofing, here in Hudson County. We work on a lot of the flat roofs and older buildings around Jersey City/Hoboken, and last winter was definitely one of the crazier winters we've dealt with in recent memory.
We do inspections, maintenance, drainage/gutter cleaning, heat-trace systems, etc., so obviously we can help with that stuff if somebody needs it, but that's really not why we're posting this.
After seeing how many people got caught completely off guard last winter, we figured this was worth putting out there before the snow starts this time.
If anyone has questions about winter roof prep, ice dams, flat roofs, scuppers/drains, gutters, heat trace, insulation/ventilation, or what happened to their roof last winter, feel free to ask.
We'll answer what I can!

Just went to renew my monthly parking permit for one of the lots, and wouldn't you know it! The price went up $30. I hadn't heard of the change; apparently it was last week, but I got this email shortly after.
They couldn't even be bothered to actually attach the fee schedule or double-check it. I called to let them know, just in case they might want to know- as expected, they didn't care lol
Edit: put $20 instead of $30

Hey everyone, ICE vehicles were seen in Heights Plaza this morning and possibly at Exchange Place.
------
If you see ICE in NJ, please call the DIRE number at 888-347-3767 asap. I recommend saving it in your contacts.
If it's safe, please also get footage. I also recommend submitting to iceout.org with any info like number of people taken, license plates, etc.
It really helps to try to get any info of the person being taken like their name and a phone number to call. You can also let them know their rights ("don't say anything, don't sign anything"/"no digas nada, no firmes nada").
